More fun with .DAT file swappingFollow

I got bored today, so I decided to mess around with the .DAT files and have some fun. Here's what I've done so far:

Behemoth as my pet in the canyon:

http://img214.echo.cx/img214/5149/a2jbehemoth26lk.jpg

http://img236.echo.cx/img236/3041/a2jbehemoth61xa.jpg

All crabs are Eald'narche:

http://img148.echo.cx/img148/2458/a2jpol20050417140410927vm.jpg

I also made a video of a Corse as my pet kicking some *** in the canyon, but I don't want to blow my bandwidth by posting it here. I just gave it to a few close friends.

I went through the model viewer and I can do all of (but not limited to) these:

http://cannotlinkto.com/dpauz (cannotlinkto'd because regular URL has a censored word in it)

Note that I made this list by browsing through the model viewer and print screening the models that looked interesting. Some other ones that I might try include Orcish Warmachines, Greater Birds, Doomeds, a few beastmen NMs with crazy skins, and last but not least, Shadow Lord. But we've all seen them, so I didn't think there was any point in including them in the gallery.

At this point, many of you might be wondering how to do this. If you're on PC, it's quite simple. Download the FFXI model viewer and in it, find two models you want to swap. Say you want to replace tigers with Kam'lanaut. First, find the location of the .DAT file for both tigers and Kam'lanaut. (Where to find the file location.) Black tiger's .DAT file is 1-5-3.dat. This means that it's found in folder PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\5 and the file name is 5.DAT. Kam'lanaut's is 2-22-20.dat, so it's at ROM2\22\20.DAT. (NOTE: For some of the CoP mobs, the first number will be 100. This just means go to ROM3.) Once you've found out the file locations, rename the one you're replacing to something along the lines of 3Backup.DAT. Due to the nature of SE's file system, there will most likely be a file with the same name as the one you're trying to copy in. Don't try to copy Kam's file in and then rename it, and whatever you do, DO NOT REPLACE ANY FILES if prompted to do so. You'll have to re-install if you replace it, but it's really easy not to so long as you're not a moron. Or Elvaan. Or Galka... But I digress... The easiest way to get around this little annoyance is to copy your new model file to one directory above its final destination. Once it's there, just rename it to 3.DAT in this case (the tiger's file name) and move it in. Assuming you backed up the correct file, it should not prompt you to overwrite. If it does, you've either named the new file incorrectly or backed up the wrong file. If you did it right, just load up the game and go find a tiger. It will have the same properties as a regular tiger, but its attacks and movement and what not will look like that of Kam'lanaut's.

If you have any other ideas or have some screenshots or whatever, post 'em here. I'll be more than happy to do some requests from PS2 people over the next few days, assuming it will work. Note that I can't do Lion or Bahamut because they don't have attacks coded into their .DAT file, so the game would crash. :( It's too bad, 'cause Lion is a babe.

I think some people made lion their moogle. So If you really want you can attempt that. Rate up for being informative....but I'm actually rating you up cause I laughed at Behemoth running through Tahrongi Canyon. lol

My moogle is the Ark Angel MR. Way cooler than Lion, for sure.

I never really messed around with switching model files much outside of that, as I like to see most everything the way it's supposed to be, and the way everyone else sees it.

If someone told me where to find the animation files for spells though, I might mess around with those a bit.

I agree. The only things I have changed right now are Mog > Dark Elemental and CourierCarrie > Corse. I'm keeping CourrierCarrie as a Corse because I rarely see her and a the way a Corse attacks and moves and everything is just so friggen cool looking.

This would be insane. Imagine setting Dia as like Meteor II or Thundaga V.

Unless you have a viewer so we can find out what each file is, we really can't do very much... But as soon as we have a working viewer, this will be a lot of fun.

I replaced my chocobo with the Ultima weapon @_@

that is, copy ROM3/9/83.DAT to ROM/90/56.DAT

I've done this before with a Scorpion, the Behemoth and the Wyvern you must fight to unlock DRG job... however, everytime I needed to /dismount, FFXI wouldn't lock up... but I'd get bound and I was stuck in a transition phase while still on my chocobo. Therefore I couldn't log out. All I could do is hit ctrl-alt-del, loose full screen and then log back in to find myself finally dismounted. Do you have any problems dismounting from the Ultima Weapon?

That must look VERY interesting, unless you meant to say your moogle and not your chocobo.

Who said I didn't have a working viewer. I'm using POLUtil and I found them after a little poking around.

    Current Findings:
    ROM/11/92.DAT - Meteor
    ROM/10/30.DAT - Holy II
    ROM/10/55.DAT - Protect V
    ROM/10/60.DAT - Shell V
    ROM/10/14.DAT - Cure VI
    ROM/11/21.DAT - Fire V
    ROM/11/26.DAT - Blizzard V
    ROM/11/31.DAT - Aero V
    ROM/11/36.DAT - Stone V
    ROM/11/41.DAT - Thunder V
    ROM/12/30.DAT - Utsusemi:San

O.o holy crap! Can you view effect animations with the program? Cause I'll be in heaven if you can... I've been wanting to change the pugils in "Shooting Fish" to Tiamat's and give their ranged attack water attack a fire based look instead. I can't wait to get a video of that fight ^^.

No, As far as I know, there is no known utility that can actually render ingame spell effects and various whatnot. You have to make a few guesses, the spells have their romanised names attached to each file (At least thats what I think it is), so they're relativly easy to spot. The only way to actually see them is to do some DAT switching.

If I get this program working, I'll make some animated .GIFs of the spells and post them... I need to install stupid Windows .NET framework 1.1 for it to work, though... :(

EDIT: This program is a pain... Can someone find Blink for me?

I'm sorry to say that I havn't had any lockup issues. I even had it changed once to Byakko and didn't have a problem there either.

    Utsu: Ichi - ROM/12/38.DAT
    Utsu: Ni - ROM/12/39.DAT
    Utsu: San - ROM/12/40.DAT

And I switched Poisona with Utsu: San, so I don't see why Utsu: Ni wouldn't work. It will still give you the same ammount of shadows as Ni, have the same cast time, and stack the same way, but it will just look and sound like San. (Utsu: San is really cool looking, by the way... but not as cool as Holy 2.)

That's too bad... I tried Tiamat when I got home, and then Fenrir... same thing... I /dismount and the chocobo halts. I never dismount and it never takes off. However, I'm like perma-bound... I can't make the chocbo move... not even turn. I try to cast or do anything and it says "Unable to perform action while riding on a chocobo." errr something like that.

    sux... I really wanted to ride that Hippoglyph around too ;;

Did you have to change anything inside the dat file? other than changing just the name?
