Description

This enormous expanse of dunes can be found along the Bhefhel Gulf. While a majority of the surrounding coastline is too shallow for larger sea vessels, one natural harbor does exist. Near this harbor lies the independent port town of Selbina.[1]

once you have cleared the 3 promyvions, you are automatically sent to lufaise meadows. not sure how you get back to the main part of the world, but once you do, this swirling vortex supposedly takes you back there. i myself havent done any of this, but from what i have heard this is how it works.

lol, I'm sorry, but I didn't understand any of that. I would also like to know what the swirling vortex it (saw it while my bro was playing and told him to go into it, he got a gob aggro while taking a picture and died XD.

I'll have to do some research on lufaise meadows and try to get a better understanding of it.

Im a L17 WAR about to sub as MNK. I have to say this...when i first got here at L10, I was extatic to finally arrive and start to PT. I quickly learned that depending on your party..it could go from a Level an hour to a Negative Level a min. TOO many times I was both pulling and Main Tanking at the same time because NO ONE wanted the responsibility, nor did they want leader. So up to the task I would step. After awhile I learned and got to the point that if I died once due to a poor WHM or DD who daydreams, it was an immediate disband and look again. Id die and theyd finish off the prey and youd see them cheer that they got 200 exp at the expense of the 400 i just lost by tanking it. I have made a few gamelong friends that I have constantly PT with and will go on with the game with, fellow WAR's of course which I am very appreciative of. I have all my sub items and am getting ready to move on in a level or so...I can safely say that I have learned ALOT in the dunes as a WAR, but also...Im NOT looking back!!!

Even though there is all these story of horror, people go to Dune for one reason - it's good XP.

Last night I was levelling my BLM, and got into a party with :

* A WHM/-- who insist on meleeing, even after I asked him to stop twice.
* A WAR/MNK mithra who doesn't voke at beginning of battle, and doesn't have a macro for TP, and she's rank 4???
* A RNG/WAR who can't Skillchain - how did he get to lvl 30 to unlock subjob??
* A puller who doesn't say 'incoming', and insist on pulling Goblin Leechers on a party of lvl 15..

Sounds like a nightmare scenario, right? We ended up killing snippers for 190+ each kill, and sometime even reaching chain 2. A few close calls like when the secondary voker (Taru SAM) got to 10hp (The WHM was casting poisona on himself by mistake instead of healing), but no death. This is the reason why people party in Dunes - all you need is a decent BLM plus one decent voker and you'll still get good XP regardless of what the other people in the party does.

There is a second reason why people party in Dunes. After a few people leaving and new member joining, I got another BLM (Rank 9) who brought a high level WHM friend to power level us - we were getting 1 level per hour with zero downtime. In fact, we had the main tank (PLD) going AFk for 3 minutes and we still continue to chain 5 with zero downtime, with the WHM meleeing all the way. Lots of PowerLevelers in Dunes, and it's easy to PL there. My only regret is that we action may have created a meleeing lvl 20 WHM monster..

If the whm is still healing properly, what the problem with him/her meleeing? We had a rank6 whm15/blm7 meleeing the whole time we were partying. If they aren't healing properly, then making them not melee isn't gonna help....they're just gonna do the same thing, but no melee. People don't need to get powerlevels out here. That's the one thing that makes me mad. You end up with people who have no idea how to play thier job becuase they don't learn the basics. The only job I could see getting pwlvled is a thf. /shudder

Yes, I used to be a WHM (stopped at 30 to get SAM and SMN) and I have so many bad memories of this place I have affectionatly nicknamed it "Valkurn Dooms." Obvious reasons.

I don't understand why people hate meleeing WHM. I meleed to get my staff skill up, and cured at the same time. (It was not until 20 that I learned how to cure properly, but I was still a good WHM even then.) I even have a small "Book" about it: The Art of the Meleeing White Mage. I have been kicked from a few parties for it, but I don't see a problem with it. At times, I see myself doing as much damage as the RDM of the party, while keeping everyone alive at the same time.

Note: After experiance with SMN, they do NOT make good meleeists! Don't try it!

I also would say that it is ignorant to assume a WHM cannot melee in the level spread we're talking about here.

I was in the Dunes getting my WHM up to 15, and I was meleeing as well as doing all of the buffs and healing. Some of the people in the PT would ask me why I was meleeing also, and were very rude about it. Then they began to notice how little damage I was taking, how decent my equip was, and the fact that I was doing as much damage as several of the other players - all the time.

Since I was chugging juice, we were able to keep the XP flowing since I had to rest much less often. Yes, you can meelee as a WHM - at least at the lower levels - if you have a clue. That's really what it comes down to after all...

It looks cool^^ i suppose its one entrance to Emptiness (expansion =\) cuz it said "Spinning Vortex that feeds on its surroundings" not exactly but close enough. Anyway its located in (I-9) in the cave in Siren Sands

God this place is terrible. It's like all the noobs in the world congregate in one nightmarish area all at one time. I admit when i came here thhe first time i had no clue what i was doing but i quickly learned how to work in a party setting. Most of the people here don't lear. Ever. From pullers running right by dozens of gobs and getting the whole pt killed to backup tanks who absolutely will not voke off of you under any circumstance, even if you tell them to. And lets not forget about the number sin of pulling. People grabbing the first thing they see without even giving an "inc". I had a pt with a decent makeup and we tell our puller to grab something. It was nighttime here and we assumed that the puller knew enough to not go anywhere near a ghoul, much less bring it back to camp. The guy comes running into view with large chunks of his health falling off at a time. We all yell at the noob to get that thing away from camp but he still brings it in and promptly died. the ghoul then ripped through the rest of the pt like we were nothing. Every imaginable crime of noobs is commited in this horrible area. Regrettably i will have to come back here soon for my drg.

(Unless stupid power levekers PL newbs and make sure they don't learn crap! ><)
I much rather newbs learn to pt here rather then like Yutunga where you loose much more xp for dying.

RE: Gustav
# Sep 20 2004 at 1:29 AM Rating: Default
There is an entrance to the Gustav Tunnel. First you must go to the not so "Secret Beach", if you dont know, there is a tunnel at (C-6). After going through the tunnel to the Secret Beach, just walk along the water til u get to another tunnel. That tunnel will take you to the Gustav Tunnel. Hope this makes sense. :)

I'm on the Alexander server, and lately there has been so much trash talking, and horror stories coming from the dunes. Yes a lot of ppl become helpless prey to gobs. Yes I've logged on only to see manslaughter on the beaches in valkurm. Yes the dunes is filled with noobs. But what else do you expect when probably the most important and anticipated quest of the game is done there? And players go there to level from 10-20. I guess you should level 10-15 in the maze, but I've never been there to level. All jobs i have past level 10, at some point I've taken them to the valkurm. I have had both good and bad experiences leveling there. But that goes for everywhere I've leveled. The other day I was there leveling my smn, and our tank...who was a lvl 13 war with no sub job, says he wants to pull. "np, go pull" I tell him. So when he comes back, he just happens to bring 3 lizzies with him. Since lizzies don't aggro, I tell everyone to zone. But our war tried to fight all 3 of em anyway. Died quickly, noob written all over this guy. So one guy in the pt just starts grilling him. As if thats what he needed after taking a 10% experience loss. So i kick the guy doing the drilling. He starts sending me /tells saying he's a lvl 60 thf, and if anyone should get kicked, it's the noob. It seems that the high levels forget that they too were noobs once also. And that only through plenty of game time, making mistakes along the way, is the only way to be a great FFXI player. High levels, please stop trashing the noobs. Instead let them know what mobs link, which aggro, and how they detect. I've been in pt's that started out bad. but after a little helpful advice and patience, turned out to be great pt's getting up to 6 chains 250 exp per kill.

1)Search for pts with high rank most likely they know what they are doing
2)or just pt somewhere else as this is the biggest newb populated area

Well this is easy to reply to..
Most newbs are going to lvl here due to how easy it is to get the subjob items, and of course if there is a huge group of ppl lvling in dunes others will follow meaning high lvls go there too because the newbs are tere making it easy to find pts

come on people... this bothering anyone else?
# Jul 20 2004 at 3:08 AM Rating: Good
You all can argue all you want about what works best, nuking snippers, brute force, ect... but you have to realize it takes over-all skill. Knowing when to voke, when to pull, when to and not to use cure 2, ect. Don't bash noobs. Everyone has to start somewhere. Be patient with them. Soon they will learn the ropes.

If you see a tough lizzard here and an IT one over the hill, grab the tough first. It'll start the chain and the IT will be worth alot more to you. If the tough was further, grab it and take the long way back to camp to avoid a link... you may take more damage from running with the mob, but you won't get a link that requires everyone's 2hr, or an important tank zoning it. A White Mage that heals a Black Mage after battle to top off his HP, knowing good and well they have to heal anyways. All these things come naturally. Respect the newer players. They'll get the hang of their character soon enough, and they'll listen to em more if you say, "Don't bother healin me bud, i gotta heal anywho for MP ^^ lol" as opposed to, "wtf noob, i gotta heal for MP anyways, get your @ss healing so we can get started again!".

Now HandofMoria, i understand where your post came from. And to be honest, i don't blame you. Sometimes that those things need to be said. There are always those people that believe they are perfect ect. I'll tell you straight out... I've been playing FFXI over a year, about 2 years of EQ, and lord knows how long on Ultima, but I still learn things from people. And I'll be one fo the first to say, "gee that's cool... why didn't I think of that... thanks bro, I'll keep that in mind..."

Around the Dunes you start partying full time. The veterans are leveling their advanced jobs and the newer folks are levelin their first (not even sub) job. There's going to be clashes, just work with em. THAT'S what I think makes the best party...

The ??? in the secret beach is the spawn trigger for the Dark Elf (for WHM AF1).
As it is for AF1, you need a party of lvl50s to take it out. I think you also need a key item to trigger it.

im not sure bout the whm not attacking head on Venks. I am a lv 28 whm and there are at times when a whm can step up and attack. NOT ALWAYS tho, and deffinately NOT at the start of the battle. to lv up my weapon skill I would ask the pt. if it was alright with them if I could attack when the mob was close to diein. that way i could: 1; make sure everybody was healed up,
2; help in the battle, (when all mp was used up)
and 3; lv my weapon skills (rock crusher, earth crusher).
as long as the whm knows when it is alright to do so, then it shouldn't be a problem. But pls. if you ARE a whm wanting to attack, ask first and make sure the mob is almost dead first.

Also if your not doing enough damage DONT FIGHT the mobs have a kinda tp system and the whms attack still adds to their tp letting them use gob bombs which hurt lol

yea, i agree, i leveled like almost every job in the dunes there, and almost eery party doesn't want to/ can't tank, heal, nuke, arch, swing a sword, talk, walk, follow, listen, zone, etc. but, as Venks said, this is the first grounds for newbs to party, as this area is good from 10-20. what i would suggest is make a party with your LS, or look for people who are advanced jobs/ rank 4+, or have subs. all these people *should* know how to party. but what i should expect from people is learning how to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS FROM THE LEADER... when a gob aggro hails his sword on your head, your first instinction should be to move, BEFORE you die, and not complain that you died because you werent paying attention. that should be an expectation to everyone, in any game. well, if you have a character on the Alexander Server, feel free to look me up and party with me, ill usually go as a nin or rng. g/l

Venks... in one sentence you admit you're a newer player, then in the next you make judgement calls about what certain classes can and cannot do.

I don't flame, but I will offer some advice - more seasoned players can do some very interesting things that can surprise you. (food, drinks, job skills, etc)

For instance, when I was playing WHM in the Dunes, ALL of my stats were capped - the ENTIRE time. This meant that I was a badass (as far as WHM goes) and was able to melee very safely. A WHM who didn't have subjob (and hadn't done other jobs) wouldn't have such high stats, and so it would be sort of dumb for them to melee.

Heh yea i was newb then it was silly of me to say stay away from attacking Whms i've learned alot so far and now know almost anything is cool as long as you know what your doing. (But I did have a problem with a whm in the past who wouldn't heal their mp and would pull when everyone was resting, everyone died and the pt fell instantly)

*grin* Nice... I apologize if I had sounded snippy at the time - it had been soon after I was bringing WHM up to 15 when I posted my message.

Since I already had my RDM in the low 20s then, I was capped on all skills and was doing some meleeing too to help chain (when my MP was close to full). Had to explain to too many rank 1, no subjob players that the WHM _can_ melee too if they know what's up. Sorry if that aggro passed on at all. :P

Just gonna post my experiences with the dunes, since I`m there now and am waiting for a friend to log back on with quest information.

As a thf I only went there once, to lvl from 19 -> 20. I didn`t even get most of the exp from the dunes, but from Pashhow. Chainin` them funguars was great, and I met a whm and war who, to this day, are great friends of mine. ANYway, I avoided the dunes because of all the horror stories of inexperienced warriors running away from mobs, black mages tanking, ect. I spent most of my days in the maze of shakhrami.

However once I was hitting the 10-20 level range as a dragoon, i had a bit more knowledge and experience under my belt. For windurstians, the maze of shakhrami is a wonderful place for levelling 12-15, 10-15 if you can find a great party. At lv 15 drg I strapped on some new armor, a new spear, and Ember and I headed to valkurm to do major levelling the first time.

And each time what a splendid experience it was. A ranger in my linkshell accompanied me the first night, along with a blm/whm. We found a whm in Sandoria, two warriors were awaiting us in Selbina, and I forgot the last job class we had. A very smooth running party, we camped at the boat in h-9. Everyone in the party levelled that night.

The next night it was just me and the ranger again, but another smooth party. We camped alil more north than the night before, had a whm come in from konschtat [sp] and a pld as well. Another level for everyone.

The third night was a repeat of the last two, same camp, higher mobs, great party, we all levelled twice. My point is, don`t let the horror stories scare you away. Don`t be afraid to look around the world for members if what you`re looking for isn`t there. [That is if you`re patientenough to wait] If you`re going to have someone, say a whm, come in from somewhere, say sandoria, and are gonna go ahead and build the party, as the members if they mind waiting for that someone. Valkurm can be very beneficial.

LOL that said, I`ve died three times today levelling bard for my dragoon. My parties have either had no healers and all tanks or no tanks and all healers. I delevelled once zoning a tinkerer[ raise got me back to 15 though] and yeah. . . sucks. But i haven`t lost patience yet.

Hope it helps!
