Mining in Gusgen Mines

Score: Decent
For those of you who wish to mine here, I've got some general information.

Level (to avoid aggro from regular mobs): 50 (beware of the sound detection of Foul Meats 'til the upper 50s, so Sneak isn't a bad idea)
First possible level: 20 (keep Sneak up with WHM or else; even then, Feu Follets and Spunkies can still detect by magic and sight)
Number of Mining Points: 15
Detection: 90% sound; 10% sight/magic (Bomb-types)
Goldsmithing-supported finds: Copper Ore, Zinc Ore, Gold Ore, Silver Ore.
Smithing-supported finds: Copper Ore, Tin Ore, Iron Ore, Darksteel Ore.
Findings compared to other mines
Zeruhn: Obviously, you're bound to find better ores in Gusgen compared to this place. There are more RMTs roaming in Gusgen, which can lead to frustration. However, it's shameful to see level 75s running around going on killing sprees to get Zeruhn Soot. Best strategy to use here in order to make money early on: take a low-level character, make sure Signet is up, and level it to level 10, using Field gear to mine. The Conquest Points are a bit of a help, as well as the prices of Zeruhn Soot (which practically every mob in Zeruhn drops) in stacks. If your Goldsmithing and Smithing are to a decent level, this can be a nice place to obtain Brass, Copper, Tin, and Iron Ingots. Silver drops too occasionally to be worth much. Darksteel is a rare, rare find, unlike it is in Gusgen.
Palborough: Don't even try to mine in Palborough. There may be some RMTs roaming in Gusgen, but this place is never an alternative. Too much commute to different mining points. Besides, you might mistake a Mythril Seam for a mining point. And that just grinds your pickaxes.
Oldton Movalpolos: From my experiences, this place is better if you pass the aggro avoidance level of 60 and have a level of Goldsmithing over 50. Otherwise, stick to Gusgen. Rares in here are less common than in Gusgen. I rarely got Darksteel in Oldton, but I've walked out with nine Darksteel in one run with Gusgen.

Summary: Gusgen has a tendency to have an RMT or two, but that's why we have GMs on-call. I've only called one once and he eliminated the threat. I can safely say that it has the highest tendencies to let some Darksteel be found, but, like I said, get rid of RMTs whenever possible! I've found that certain hacks can make your mining findings horrible! I didn't think it was possible, but breaking five pickaxes in a row with complete Worker equipment... not so much fun.

I didn't bother to show my comparison to Yughott Grotto, because I didn't spend enough time at Yughott. I didn't find anything of value at Yughott, so to speak. Basic finds, without any rares in a good, long period of time.

With full mining equipment and maxed-out inventory space and the ability to successfully synth all ores here (other than Tin and Pebbles, your throw-away-ers), you can take in eight stacks of pickaxes and three stacks of Fire Crystals and walk out three or four hours later with 250k+ worth of ores. Seeing as though I've come so far in the mining world by myself, I'm proud of such a profit.

Just pwnt blind moby today, pretty easy with my lvl 32 mnk self, went to the yellow hp though, that scared me, the dog didnt agro though ^^.

ANYWAY BACK TO THE POINT:
this place has always creeped me out/interested me ever since eco-warrior quest, when i saw the ghost kid float around, kinda freaked me out, lol

NOW, info on this place was lacking, so thats why i didnt skip 2-3:
SLIGHT BACKSTORY SPOILERS:

ALIGHTYTHEN,
1) Sandorian Priests have been performing exorcism rituals (tele-hola quest?) on the mines.
2) Acording to everyones favorite presidental aide, Lucius (and cid, he was there to...), gusgen has some sort of magical importance
3) Glucolite can only be obtained from Gusgen, glucolite is a rare meatle with unknown props., and you obtain it from a pool of water, which happens to be where ghost NMs spawn...

MY THEORY BASED ON THIS: glocolite is formed by the crystal line, (those offshoots of the tele crags) which just so happens to be running underground a couple meters from gusgen, the glocolite can re-animate dead tissue... which is why the dead in gusgen didnt stay dead,

ANYWAY that is just my theory...

Theres always the "Moria Theory" to, they dug up the balrog ^^ lol

Ok where did you find this knowledge to get a theory? All I knew was I nearly had a heart attack while doing the Holla quest.

I'm in Gusgen. Friend just died and hp. If I die I delevel. I'm WHM so I can Sneak and Invis around til I get out.

I see Juggler Hecatomb. (Someone told my the he was a HMN >.>) I think.. Oh nice... and carry on.

I turn the coner into a dead end. And I see a ghost at the end standing on the buffers (Hume one not a mob).

At that instant the sirens go off.

I wasn't told this would happen. It's about 1am in the morning, (Real life time) and I was scared out of my mind.

Also another ghost appeared (Hume one not a mob) but he was on the ceiling...

First thing I did was smack my speaked in hope of hiting the off button. Instead I knocked the power cable out. >.>

Anyways I escaped and never went back... til I had to finish off my mules Deathbringer quest. >.>

By the looks of it something horrible happened in Gusgen by the number of ghosts there. But does anyone know what happened in Gusgen?

Two things.

1) "Moria Theory"? Whats that?
2) Balrog? Who or what is that?

Like why are there ghosts here?(NOT the mob ghosts) Why do Sirens go off during the night?

Also if anyone has information about and other Dungeons (Maze of Shakhrami, Attohwa Chasm etc.) Could they give me more history lessons or tell me quests to do to find out more? ^^;

I thought it was the ??? for the teleport holla quest but this is farther north than the holla one.

Any ideas?

Whats the deal with the cermet door? is that part of the eco quest? May be a noob question, I know, but I've never done the Bastok eco.

There's a strange apparatus behind it. (To find the apparatus, go through the first door on the right, then head to (J-6) and walk through the wall)

Trade this apparatus an infinity core and a yellow chip to get a surprise. This will cost 21000 gil at the very least and you may end up with a single earth cluster so use at your own risk.

Are you familiar with the strange apparatus?

It's a rumor. While there are certain items that can increase your "mining skill", it is never at any more than the set amount. It's not a hidden talent like chocobo digging supposedly is.

I left FFXI. 300 days of playtime. Tired of it, partly. Sometimes all it takes is one person to ruin something for you. Basically, Hellich is a bastard. If you see him on Leviathan, stay away. If you MUST deal with him, then don't believe a word of the poison that spills from his mouth. It's all deceit.

I absolutely love the little ghosts in Gusgen. I was there helping a friend with a Magicked Skull when I had ventured further into the first floor for the first time. Saw the ghost towards the back, heard the giggle... Ran in that room on the left-left of the map on the first floor (NM spawn room) and heard a noise. I loved that spooky stuff, kept looking for more, but at that time I didn't know about going straight and into the middle room of the first floor down them steps.

Later I found that middle room, but luckily I leared not to go past the doors cause everyone says there's mobs around level 50 in there.

Anyway, onto the point of this! There's a lot of ghost NMs in Gusgen, and does anyone know how they spawn? Random? Timer? Etc. I'm looking to risk my life against one of them =D

Oh and I must add that I LOVE the sirens that are heard occasionally in the mines, why? Because I'm a Silent Hill fan, and sirens are awesome after having played that game/series ^_^

from what I have been told, if you hear a siren, a NM has just spawned, or is about to spawn. Haven't gone very far into this mine yet cause my level is not high enough yet, so don't know for sure if this is true.

Oh god, I hated all that spooky stuff the first time I went in there looking for RSE. It was bad enough that I didn't have a map, any idea where I was going, nor was a high enough level to avoid all the mobs in there. Then I see these ghosts appearing and disappearing and giggles and sirens and all kinds of freaky stuff. Ended up dying after a Wight aggroed me while I was healing.

Went again today to mine, siren went off while I was exploring one of the off passages, Crushed Krause appears... I'm like... "Oooh NM, how strong can it be?" without remembering how useless a dagger is against a ghost, especially when you can't position yourself for a well placed Sneak Attack to start the battle. Died again...

In conclusion... I hate this place.

This is a post I wrote in the main forum, but I noticed there weren't any similar directions here, so I hope this is of some help to people.

The lever doors work on the system where when one is opened, the others are closed. There can only be one lever door open at a time.

If you're at the first set of doors. The western door and eastern doors are linked through a passageway. An easy way to get to this passageway (it goes through the 'main cavern', but you're above it and you can't get down or go up) is to head to one of the doors and then try to stick east/se or west/sw, depending on which you're coming from. You can't get to the center door from the west and east doors - unless you drop down a hole, which I'll talk about later. If you're at the center door and the center door is closed, then you have to go down into the 'main cavern' and to the second set of doors.

If you're at the second set of doors. These are a little easier as they're all linked. That means you can go back up to the center door of the first set of doors to check if it's open (if so then you're home free). If it's not, then you have to head to a western/sw room. Easiest way is to go through the west door, then stick westerly - you'll curve around and come sw eventually into a room. This room has a big hole in the middle. Drop down and you'll end up in the 'AF/Juggler' room, which is actually a part of the first set west/east accessible place. That means that you can head back up and around and try the first set of west/east doors again. If these are closed again (this is when you swear mightily), then you can drop down that hole I was talking about. This hole is located on the north side of the ne room and it's difficult to see, so run around and keep your eyes open. This will drop you to a spot behind the second set of doors again. So you can repeat the wonderfully fun process all over again. ;)

Ugh... I was stuck behind these doors on my way out of Gusgen after touching the ??? for the Teleport-Holla quest. I kept sneak up and eventually heard people fighting on the other side of the door. I called out to them and they were kind enough to pull the lever and let me out!
