Description

The twisting canyons of the Tahrongi were carved out of the surrounding mountains thousands of years ago when powerful rivers ran through the region. While this spectacle of nature awes all who pass through, the danger that lurks within its walls should not be underestimated.

Long ago, new adventurers in Vana'diel raced through Tahrongi Canyon on their way to battle in the Maze of Shakhrami. Nowadays, veterans teleport to the Crag of Mea on their way to The Sanctuary of Zi'tah. The Canyon remains the primary path for young Windurstians en route to Jeuno.

The occasional crawler can be found on the craggy, rocky terrain, which stands in unearthly contrast to the lush grasslands of Sarutabaruta.

Points of Interest

  • Inexperienced adventurers are safe in the zone's narrow southern corridors, but more powerful monsters lurk where the corridors spill out into the wide expanse of the canyon.
  • Adventurers heading through the zone for the first time should get a teleport crystal from the Crag of Mea.
  • The Crag of Mea also serves as a gateway to Ru'Aun Gardens and Al'Taieu.
  • Mining is possible on the large piles of bones scattered throughout the zone.
  • Adventurers looking for a quick way home from Tahrongi Canyon can quickly reach the outpost warp NPC in the adjacent Buburimu Peninsula.

Maps

The Map of the Windurst area, which includes Tahrongi Canyon, can be obtained from several merchants for about 200 gil.

I checked it earlier, and it said that I heard the voice "deep underground". Apparently the closer you hear the voice, the closer he is to popping. Info on the bugger is here: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/bestiary.html?fmob=1808

Ok one day as BST I was here Luck Rune at H-10 and targeted this, I have no idea what this is for or quest or mission. I tried to trade it a 4-leaf but nope since it was luck related. Does anyone know what this is for?

Me and a friend were hunting the newer NM's last night, found a bunch from the Mystery Tour website. According to that, you trade a distilled water to it and it spawns Yara Ma Yha Who. Tried trading, but it just said that the plant has enough water already. Dunno if you have to do any prerequisites for it, but the NM drops a Fasting Ring (Lv. 15 All jobs HP-20 MP+10 STR+1) Any word on how to spawn this would be appreciated, as this ring would be great for farming w/ my other character.

The Yara Ma Yha Who can only be spawned every 20 ingame hours.
So if anyone else trade the water before and 20 ingame hours didn't pass by, you can't trade the water.

Um... I was recently passing through the path towards the south end of the canyon, and i ran into a ??? that wasn't there before... Around J-10. When I go to examine it, it says there is a withered plant, or something like that. It responds (in a way) when I trade items - it says "nothing happens." This leads me to believe a monster would spawn there when a certain item is traded to the ???... So, anybody know anything?

EDIT:
I tried trading it distilled water, and it spawned a NM called "Yara Ma Yha Hoo," sapling type, which dropped vegetable seeds and an item called Fasting Ring. The stats are as follows: HP-20 MP+10 STR+1 lv15 all jobs, rare/ex.

Dhamels
# Feb 25 2005 at 10:09 PM Rating: Decent
Dhamels are soloable for thf as early as lvl 16 if you're careful. Only take on dc's and open the fight with sneak attack. On the rare occasion you get a mean dc don't be afraid to use your 2 hour. this is a good source of exp if you're having an off day in valkurm.

Well, if you click on the Maze of Shakrami link in "Connected Areas" you'll see the suggested level range is 15-40.

Why be both condescending _and_ wrong?

The levels 15-40 listed on the Maze of Shakrami main page is saying the mob levels that you will find there, not 'suggested' levels to go there.

Most good PTs can take mobs from 6-8 levels higher than they are - or even more if you have veteran players. This is not always true at real low levels (if none of you have subjob yet, etc) but is pretty true all the way to 75.

Many people go into the Maze for worms (Maze Makers) at 11 or 12 I believe - but if you do so, make sure that you have some ranged damage potential to reduce overall damage your PT takes. They cast spells but if most of the PT stays out of their range of direct attack you can do excellent chains.

Watch out for the Gobs wandering around here though - in fact you may want to bring along a higher leveled friend to kill any gobs that wander near your PT.

In response to OP - if you have problems getting a PT in the Maze (lots less people PT in there it seems these days) you may want to duo or trio your RDM (if 1 of you is tank it helps a lot) on Dhalmels in Tahrongi Canyon for a level or two (bring a few Echo Drops if you can afford it so you don't die if silenced by them) - then hit Korroloka Tunnel to do worms till you're ready for Qufim or your favorite spot for the 19-24 range. Most but not all players go to Elshimo (Kazham) for 24-30+.

they spawn around h-8 and h-9 a lot of the time, but they are heavily saught after, soyou need to be quik or have wide scan-i use my rng and widescan for elementals and canyon crawlers here-i can get 2-3 stacks of silk thread and 5-6 clusters in about 4-5 hours, depending on the weather

If you go to Valkurm Dunes at 10 I recommend coming in from the Konstacht Highlands (sp?) zone, and setting your HP at the NPC just after you zone in. This way if you die you will be really close to where your PT camp is likely to be (most PTs do 10-15 on lizards then goblins). At these levels it's generally easier (and nicer on your PT members) if you just hit the HP after death instead of waiting for a Raise and for Weakness to wear off. You can often more than earn your 10% xp loss back in the time it takes for weakness to wear off.

Once you hit 15 (if you're staying in Dunes and not headed to Korroloka Tunnel *hint*), you may want to set HP in Selbina as most of the 15-20 camps are closer to Selbina than the Highlands zone. The Dunes are easy to get around in despite what many people say - just remember that Gobs aggro by sight - so if you run behind one you should be safe, as long as it doesn't turn at you right as you're passing it.

Heh, I love this place, but I also hate it.

I love it cause I can excavate for bonework, and smack around Dhalmels for fun, but I hate(d) it because of ghosts and Poltergeist.

Lesson learned: Yes, I could kill dhalmels easily as a 23THF.

No, I cannot kill Ghosts as a 23THF.

No, Sneak Attack does NOT work against Poltergeist, because they aggro by sound. x.x

Haven't tried fighting either Ghosts or Poltergeists recently, but I'll see when I hit 33THF.

Edited for my sucky spelling, and forgive to extra 'o' in 'to' up there. ^^;

Just last weekend I took a Poltergeist as a 30 WHM without what you'd call ideal fighting gear.

I was near the crag raising a LS friend who had been run over by one. While he was waiting for sickness to wear off, a Geist came sniffing around, so I smacked it one.

It took a frikkin' long time and most of my MP to kill, but I wasnt in any danger of dying myself. It conned TWTBW, and didnt drop anything... but I think I got a 0.1 or 0.2 of staff skill out of it. :/
