Description

The twisting canyons of the Tahrongi were carved out of the surrounding mountains thousands of years ago when powerful rivers ran through the region. While this spectacle of nature awes all who pass through, the danger that lurks within its walls should not be underestimated.

Long ago, new adventurers in Vana'diel raced through Tahrongi Canyon on their way to battle in the Maze of Shakhrami. Nowadays, veterans teleport to the Crag of Mea on their way to The Sanctuary of Zi'tah. The Canyon remains the primary path for young Windurstians en route to Jeuno.

The occasional crawler can be found on the craggy, rocky terrain, which stands in unearthly contrast to the lush grasslands of Sarutabaruta.

Points of Interest

  • Inexperienced adventurers are safe in the zone's narrow southern corridors, but more powerful monsters lurk where the corridors spill out into the wide expanse of the canyon.
  • Adventurers heading through the zone for the first time should get a teleport crystal from the Crag of Mea.
  • The Crag of Mea also serves as a gateway to Ru'Aun Gardens and Al'Taieu.
  • Mining is possible on the large piles of bones scattered throughout the zone.
  • Adventurers looking for a quick way home from Tahrongi Canyon can quickly reach the outpost warp NPC in the adjacent Buburimu Peninsula.

Maps

The Map of the Windurst area, which includes Tahrongi Canyon, can be obtained from several merchants for about 200 gil.

Wind Elementals spwan behind the Crag, and Earth Elementals sapwn in the little area that is surrounded my rocks in FRONT of the Crag, I hope that helps.

Does anybody know the purpose of the cave in F-6? I'm terribly curious. Future expansion? NM? Quest?

This cave deals with the quest that the Mayor of Selbina gives you, where you have to use clay to copy the writings of an old adventurer.

Does anyone know what the ??? target by the Crag of Mea is for? It tells you to "empty out your inventory". I traded it something and it said give me more.

Not too sure either, the only item it would accpept from me was Yhuatunga Sulfur, so I'm still trying to give it enough. We'll see what happens :)

It's the NM Goblin Archeologist. The closer he is to the surface, the more likely he will pop when you feed him. I think there is one at every crag.
RE: ??? by Grag of Mea

Yeah, it could be an NM Goblin Archeologist or Goblin Alchemist..it usually says "Give me everything you have in your bag." Then it says that you hear a voice from deep within or from deep below. And if you trade something to it, and it's close enough to the top of the ground, then a notorious mob will come out and its usually inc. tough!

You are correct, the Goblin Archeologist is found at La Theine plateau and Konstchat Highlands. I have yet to make the ??? at Mea pop yet but, I can imaging the same thing applies. You can trade just about anything to them. I just kill the local vermin and feed whatever drops I get. If it is close to midnight (game time) I will wait as you can only trade it once game day. I believe the scale goes from Extremely deep under the ground to Extremely Close to the Surface with about 6-8 levels in between. It will automatically aggro the person who makes the last trade to get it to pop. With my experience fighting it I cant say that I have fought one over lvl 35 they have all been easy to kill even as a THF, but I have heard stories of High levels getting owned so I always take a friend or 2 just to be safe. I hope this helps.

Thank You for listening to my morning Ramble.

I love this area...I have leveled from 10 to 18 here. It is easy to hunt here even at night. The ghosts always tend to stay near the giant bones on the ground. So do the akabas. so if its nightime and you see any akabas, move far away. Also beware of linking DHamels. They were not too tough for me at lvls 15-18. but when they linked I always died. The other undead that haunt this region are pathetic. by lvl 14 you can solo them all. One last warning, stay away from the area just north of the crag, Poltergeists hang out there at any hour...

Yeah it's a great place to lvl except for 2 things. First, I've been in the area that I usually farm, and seen lvl 30+ killing off everything in sight or lvl 15 PT of 6 killing off dhalmel's when I know for a fact they could go elsewhere. Heck, I take them by myself most of time as a lvl 15 RDM. The only exception is right now. I was soloing a Dhalmel and a Persecutor came from behind and aggroed me. =( Now I'm eating dirt waiting for a raise. That brings me to my second point, where are the lvl 30+'s now? lol =D.

They're doing a Windurst mission. Mission 2.2, a Testing Time requires you to massively kill anything you can in Tahronghi Canyon within a time limit of 1 game day.

Very likely... either that or they could also have been a farming party - if one of them has leathercraft, one bonecraft, one alchemy, etc then they can make a decent amount of gil for the level, especially if they had a THF 15+ (for Treasure Hunter) along with.

Stacks of beeswax, dhalmel leather, cotton cloth, gelatin, etc. - or unstackables like bone rings, etc - lots of goodies can be synthed off of drops found in the Canyon - especially if you get free crystals from the mobs you kill.

Beware the Ghosts at night, just stay away from Ghosts, a "tough" con ghost took out a 3 member party (10-12) and we did less than 10% damage to it. Killed me in 1 hit (over 85 dam)

They're not hard to avoid... they only show up by the bone piles. If you see huge dinosaur looking bones with Akbabas (bird type mob) nearby then watch out from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM - the Ghost type mobs will pop then. Remember, Ghosts and Bones (the various skeleton type mobs) are undead, and so will be damaged if you cast Cure on them. Yes really... there are few things more satisfying than seeing a newbie player getting beaten on by an aggroing undead and saving them by zapping it with a Cure IV. Fun and a nice thing to do.

The Poltergeists (Evil Weapon type mob) pop all day long but are mostly on the East side of the Crag, so they're easy to avoid too

Where does "Serpopard Ishtar" spawn at?

As near as I can remember, it spawns around I-6 or I-7, but not very often.

Its I-8. He actually spawns pretty often. Walk in an east/west pattern in I-8 and kill every Dhamel you see (you have to kill his placeholder). Fought him 3X in as many hours.

What does this mythical zone in at the NE tip look like? Hubby and I got into trouble by aggroing a ghost and a couple Akbabas and tried to zone in but found only a dead end.

Turn left at the "dead end". It's not really hidden, but it might be a little hard to find if you don't know exactly where to look

This is an old post, but I'll answer it anyways as it may be helpful to newer players.

In order to be teleported to one of the Crags (or the other telepoints), you must first visit it in person and 'touch' the spinning blue crystal thing on the platform. Once you've done this, you can go on a ride with a WHM who has the correct Teleport-x spell.

The WHM will invite you into their party (perhaps ask for 500 gil) then Tele the whole pt there.

I believe its needed to activate/use a certain White Magic teleport spell.
Unmarked caves
# Nov 05 2003 at 2:06 PM Rating: Default
Unmarked ont he map are a cave with a stone monument in E5, and the Maze in J5. There's also several places where you can mine.

Oh, and don't forget to get a Mea key so you can teleport here.
Easiest Route

Easiest route through the pass I've seen is hugging the eastern coast, pretty quick and painless.
Undercons and Overcons
# Nov 04 2003 at 12:21 PM Rating: Decent
This zone can be an xp paradise or nightmare, depending. Solo players between 10 and 15 are advised to hunt during the day, while groups would best be served at night. Be careful of undercons and overcons. Most of the smaller animals (rarabs, sprouts, bees) are overconned, and are quite good xp for the ease of kill. Others, such as the wild zhamels (?) are ridiculously underconned and have even wiped groups of mine when simply "tough"... and as stated before, ware the undead at night!

Easiest Route?
# Nov 04 2003 at 2:54 AM Rating: Default
Anyone have any advice on the best route through the Ahropahgo Pass?

I currently am hugging the west coast until I get into the open desert, which obviously isn't very straight of a line.
RE: Easiest Route?
# Dec 08 2003 at 3:22 PM Rating: Default
If you go up the west side, at G11 you should see a turn-off to go North. Not only is it a much faster way, but there is a small opening where you can find some decent monsters until lvl 12 or so.
At night.....

At night, powerful undead monsters roam the canyon.
RE: At night.....

they just don't roam very far from a couple of select points. ;)
