I get lots of invites here but they forget about me once I tell them I don't know the way. Mean, eh? I mean what if they never brought anyone who didn't know the way? Eventually this place would die down. So if you need someone who doesn't know the way, just give them directions...please.

EDIT: Also, many times I was asked as WHM so I could have sneaked myself. And when is there a party not willing to help a WHM if it means they can keep leveling? (I'm not talking about one lvl 41+).

Currently dinged 38 last night and figure i let others know some info about this zone.
I Duo with Eclipza and this place was hard when we first got here... 1st thing I told him was the Escape routes after getting him a map of the area (maps sold in Raboa): (J-8) is Korrolka Tunnel (the Hook), (K-7) Quicksand Caves (underground) and (I-6) zone to West Altepa (SW corner little hook).
When we first got here (32 or 33bst)we ran around and charmed whatever spider we could... wasnt great but we learned the area; but we then stuck to the East wall running north and south. Only thing really there was Spiders + bettles ( 1 Scorp pit but not far enough to not get argo). We then found our favorite spot near the Quicksand Zone, it had spider/beetles/antica... that spot had very little running around and there was a random Party at J-8 NE area where it bottle necks up (dhamel spawn there... no argo area). We did 34-37 there, we leveled up very quick there and chained up to 4.... At 37 mobs scaned at DC with random EM.... so we moved on.
Next spot I found while running around solo was near the West Altepa zone (I/5-6).. It has a few spiders (EP), Beetles (DC-T) and Dhamels(T-IT):: Earth Elemental also spawns out there (IT to 37scan)... me and Eclipza tossed 2 EM bettles at it for fun ;p it had stoneskin up and tossed stone 2 at the 1st attackin pet, we <RUN AWAY!> after it casted Stoneaga 2; we knew we had no chance but we wanted ta keep our pets, we ran and released and zoned... Great fun ;p
Theres always a party at the West altepa zone, which also has a NPC ta save/signet at...we mostly did bettle vs bettle or T dhamel, but the other pt there limited the beetle population... bettle vs VT-IT dhamel was a risk... most of the time it works out, but they are tricky, cause a few times we release and Dhamel does its HP move and BOOM 200+ hp and you without a pet... Leveling off the Dhamels is like fighting bombs in Gusgen, If they blow up you win, if not its hard... Dhamel berserk is what we PRAY FOR, there HP drops very very quickly; a couple of times we did not Release in time due to that, hehehe HP was droping to quick... Chain 3 ending with IT dhamel that went berserk got us 260+xp ^_^

crystal is safe, unless someone pulled an ant there and died/warped/disconnected.

Crystal is at G-6/7, just go exactly east, and into the tunnel at I-6. In the other desert, just go straight north and a bit to the west when you get into the open area.

32-34 - Dhamels (you can use beetles to do better exp chains
34-37 - Dhamels, and begin transition to goblins
37-40 - Goblins (you can start these at about 35 depending on pt)
40-45 Move to Altepa West and fight beetles at Revelation rock.
45-50 You can move into Quick Sand Caves and begin fighting the tougher beetles there (I have not made it to this point yet, I was told that there are 2 lvls of beetles in the caves).

Oh, and on a side note, you can, at 37-40 pull the Manticore just north of the gobby camp for a good exp chain boost... There is only one, but it spawns every 5-15 mins. And you can also handle the undead that spawn at night pretty easy starting at 35... Ok, they start conning T-VT around 37...

This is a place my ls likes to go to pt, when we can, and have jobs at this lvl, we love to go there, because we tend to get about 1 1/2 lvls an hour. And though it's hard to setup a pt, you don't have to worry about links, if you have a whm high enough with the tele spell, it can replace Escape, and you can pt near the zones pretty easily. There are enough mobs for 3-5 different pts, so it's hard to fill the area... Basically, it's like a fun version of the dunes.

P.S. you only need invis when going near the gobs... Outside of that, all mobs aggro on sound...

Oh, and one last note: the Outpost teleport is lvl 40. So if you reach the point where you can level in Western altepa it is very easy to get to and from there, just alittle expensive (400 if your town owns it, 1600 if they don't).

Unfortunately, there are alot of ppl who just lvl, and don't bother with the exintricities of the game, such as doing outpost runs, or getting the gate crystal, or having an airship pass... However, I really don't like pting with those ppl after Yhoater... Since, I have been both puller and tank (thf and nin) past 40. I have died from links as both jobs. Unfortunately I think I am the only puller that, if past 25, I will pull the mob back to the pt, then take the link away from pt and die, so the rest of the pt doesn't die with me...

No bats, no jetstream. No crawlers linking from 5 miles away... Just nice and easy pulls, and quick and dirty kills:) I love altepa...

Help is not needed - there are many resources available to help you - Silent Oil gives you the same effect as Sneak and Prism Powder the same as Invisible.

They are just as effective as their spell counterparts, but do cost some gil. Oh well, can't always drag a mage around when you need some help.

You should find the gate crystal in Altepa Desert East at the indentation that runs from G-6 to G-7,
The entrance to the Korroloka Tunnel is in the small protrusion at J-8 in the Eastern Desert and at the Altepa Desert West at H-4 and one of entrances to the Quicksand Caves is also in the Western Desert at J-9, not sure of the entrance in the eastern desert.

There are three different locations for this crystal posted on this page. Obviously, only one is correct. Just to clear this up a bit:

The crystal is in the trench at G-7.

Sneak/Invis will help because there are several Anticans standing very close to the crystal.

You don't need to go through the trench at G-10, and it's certainly not in the trench at H-8. Just go straight to G-7.

This has already been answered - but here goes so nobody else will ask.

You need to make your way to Rabao. Either print off maps of Korrolaka and the Altep zones (like I did) and make your way there solo, or ask for help from somebody who already has been there.

One thing to remember about not having the map - your POS does still show up when you open the map screen, so if you have a printed out map, you can navigate there without much problem.

One important thing I found out is that the crystal is not as easy to get to as it looks. I think you need to go into a crack farther south (G-10) and go through a tunnel to get to the crack with the crystal in it. I learned that the hard way.

I don't think you can take Anticans at lvl 28, but you should try the beetles before you start taking the Ants. If you can take the beetles then maybe try ants, but i think the beetles (i think they are called sand beetles) will be a challenge and give good exp

The best way to pick up any remaining elements that your Carbuncle's Ruby needs to experience is to talk to the various weather checker NPCs. They tell you where you have a good chance to 'experience' the element.

If they say there will be a heat wave in Altepa for the next 3 days, that means Fire will be showing up in Altepa for the next ~ 3 hours.

When I was first running through Eastern Altepa Desert on my way to Rabao, I got lost pretty quickly... even WITH this map to look at to help me find my way. In an attempt to prevent anyone else from going through the same confusion and frustration I did, I'll just make a few notes about Eastern Altepa Desert that I've found useful:

First and foremost, the entrance to Eastern Altepa Desert from Korroloka tunnel is at the end of the small horizontal protrusion in the south-east corner of J-8.

Secondly, the Altepan Gate Crystal is (like many other important parts of the desert) located in a small trench. In this case, the Crystal is located in the trench at the south end of H-8.

Thirdly, the entrance to the Quicksand Caves from Eastern Altepan Desert is located at the end of the trench in the large offshoot directly north of the entrance to Korroloka Tunnel. The entrance itself is in K-7.

Lastly, and the thing that confused me the most, is that the northern exit to Western Altepa Desert is NOT where the arrow indicates. Rather, it is at the end of the tiny protrusion in the south-west corner of I-6.

I hope that helps to clear up any confusion about Eastern Altepa Desert. Good Luck!

i've been lvling here the past few nights after my brother suggested it. go there with a pt, it'll be really hard to find one regardless of your lvl (at least on ragnarok). at lvl 30-32 our pt of 5 members (2rdm, 1war, 1thf, 1whm) were taking on IT+ beetles with relative ease as long as u do renkei. if you don't renkei the battle may drag on to the point of mages running out of mana. RDM's out there..... use gravity on beetles. they have high evasion.

this is a great alternative, we we're lvling at the zone to Western Altepa (by the flag bearer) & were the only pt out there. we all lvld once within a 3 1/2 hour period. might not be as fast as other areas, but we were also 3 mages out of a 5 person pt. so we had major downtime at points.

sneak is the only spell u need to get around. very few mobs aggro to sight (manticores, gobs, lost souls). most things will aggro by sound. most things also link, beetles, spiders, dhamels, anticans. ....basically everything you'll fight will link.

anyways, everyone that has gone there with me pt'ing, falls in love with this place. no lag at zone, wide open spaces, u can see mobs coming a mile away. it's great!!.

It's really easy I do it today, just follow korroloka tunnel, then when u exit, follow the wall to your right, then u enter in west altepa, then follow the wall again to the right, not first, but second cave u will find Rabao where u could buy map + chocobo.

Good luck, jsut cast sneak, it should be alright.

The weakest mob I saw there was "tough" to a lvl 28 (a desert spider). I saw a mob out there that *looked* similar to a cactaur, but it had a different name. If you still want to go, make sure you have some way to give yourself the sneak effect.

You can't get lost getting to this area. Korroloka is pretty much a straight shot (the map to Korroloka, and only Korroloka sells for 3k in Rabao). If you're heading to Rabao, however, it is exceedingly dangerous (one of the mobs in Altepa West killed my ~500 hp partner in 2 hits) and only recommended if you have a guide to help you find the city entrance. The map to this region (Altepa East, Altepa West, and Rabao) can be purchased in Rabao for 3k from one of the npcs in the auction house area.

At night, there are a large number of skeleton type mobs. There's also goblins, dahmels, worms, spiders, and cactaur type mobs.

Was that mob by any chance named Sabotender? I came out here looking to group around level 28 (found out people only take you if you're 29+ >.<), and saw one of those. Sabotender is the Japanese name for cactuar, so if that's what you saw, it was cactuar ^^. Strangely, they decided to call some "Cactuar" and others "Sabotender". Not sure what that's about.

Anyways, if you're coming here under level 30, bring a full group; you'll have trouble getting in one, as people hunt here into their upper 30's. It's certainly doable at 28-29, though, so if you're having as much trouble finding a place to level up to 30 as I am, definately check this place out.

Having sneak/invis/deoderize is definately a good idea. This region has plenty of aggresive, high level monsters, so caution is an absolute must. I had them on coming through the tunnel and while looking around, so I can't vouch for how safe this area would be without them.

Hope this helps.

Go though the Zehfim(sp?) mines from Bastok Mines zone, through the gate. This will take you to Korrosomething Tunnels (sorry I'm bad with names). This tunnel leads to Eastern Altrepa. I believe it enters right at J-8 on the map, but I'm not completely sure.
