Being from Windie of done alot of spelunking around the towers just as a curiosity. Since there are six towers Ill list them as Upper, Middle and Lower, since well thats the order :3

In the East Saru area Upper Tower, there are three NM spawns, Doppelganger Dio, Gog, and the Bomb King. There is also a Magical Gismo door located behind a false wall.

The Middle Tower is used in Windurst Mission 1-1. Behind a cracked wall you can go lower into tunnels and find the Mahagony door. Further down it leads to three mage gate, which is connected to Rank Three Missions and above. If you keep going straight you'll end up exiting the Middle Tower in the West Saru area. Also treasure chest spawn in the tunnels below the tower. I got a key from killing the weaker slimes once.

The Lower Tower is a square and is used for Windurst Mission 1-2.

In the West Saru area, the Northern tower opens up to a large room with lots of low level gobs and bats. To the left of the tower entrance, along the wall there is a cracked wall that leads further down. This tower area is pretty straight forward and youll end up running into a large cavern room with lots of Ghouls and Black Jellies. If you walk against the back wall youll find that part of it is fake and is actually another tunnel. Down this tunnel there is a cerment door and large machine which asks for a Password, an Infinity core, and an Elemental chip. Upon asking some higher level associates (whether true or not) I was told it was used to make random items.

The Middle tower is the exit from the other system.

The Lower tower is full of varying level cardians. They range from Two of, all the way to Ten of, as well as some higher level Weapon class monsters further in the back behind a few cracked walls. Further back is a Magical Gismo door used in another of the higher rank missions.

Hope this helps anyone running around these areas.

You trade a Purple Chip and an Infinity core to it, and you have the chance to get a variety of things. I don't have a link offhand, but do a Google search.

This is true, but it will attack you if it sees you resting whether you have the card or not. I tested this, ^^
Also, if you attack a cardian to which you hold the card, other cardians will still link. If you hold the card of the other cardians, as well, if they are WHM cardians, or have a healing spell, they will heal the cardian you're attacking, but they will not attack you, and when you kill the cardian you attacked, they will ignore you.

The baloon you saw was in a room where 1 of 3 NM's COULD possibly spawn. Note that you should probably be around lvl 35 before trying to hunt here, as the Doppelgangers will rip you to shreads. Bomb King is the other NM, he is a little bit easier, but not too much. The rooms with the 3 of coins (etc.) are crap rooms in my opinion. 3 rooms spawn NMs, if no Nm, a baloon spawns instead :D. (Please note that i only have EVER seen Doppelganger Gog, but other poeple i know have seen and beaten the other 2, and died to them also :P)

The cave that can be seen in West Sarutabaruta near the far western tower... I've heard rumors that it's an exit from Horotoro somewhere. Is this true? Where does it lead from? My exploratory curiousity is currently obsessed with the goal of standing in that cave opening for a triumphant photo.

I've gone deep into that western tower (lvl 41) and end up getting jumped by the Tens (cardians) every time before I can go invisible, so I dunno what that last magic door leads to.

The cave exit is a shortcut from deep down inside. So instead of having to go all the way back through the ruins, this tunnel takes you right outside. It has nothing to do with a BCNM (that i know of) I used this tunnel once i finished a quest here.

I have a question for all you Windurstians. I recently ran through East Saruta and noticed that no one goes to the little tower way in the north, so I went there myself. Only level 2 and 3 cardians as far as I saw, and one balloon. This one is the Lilac Tower, it is just a hallway, with four sets of two parallel stone doors on the east side and 3 sets on the left side with a cracked wall, which went to a magical gizmo gate that I can probably only open if I'm from Windy :/

I asked a rank 6 Windurstian and he said it was involved in no missions, but that an NM spawns inside one of the rooms randomly. There were two other people there at the time, but they didn't speak english. They did however keep running back and forth, opening the doors and looking inside, fighting a mob if there was one. I began to think maybe only one mob spawns in any one of the rooms at a time? But they were also only lvl 3 cardians and the one balloon. The two others were only lvl 30 WAR and lvl 24 WAR, both rank 3, so I still don't know what's there :( What is it that lies beyond the Gizmo gates and in those stone rooms?

the 3 mages gate can be opened by a blm, rdm, and whm or find someone from Whindy that is rank 4 or higher. They should have a key item called a portal charm that is used to open the mages door. I am a warrior and I have it. no mages needed to open the door. I think I got it when I finished rank 2 missions going into rank 3 or rank 3 missions going into rank 4. anyways I had to trade 1 rollanberry to the npc at the desk in heavans tower. she said she will remember me. when I got my next rank I went back to her and she gave me the portal charm. I can get behind the mages door to fight the wendigos or even get to the toraimarai canal without help. Only people from Whindy can get this.

You can only obtain the portal charm when you are a Windurst citizen, but that does not limit it to only people who started out as Windurstians.

Any player who has not accepted a mission (as in they don't currently have one in progress) may change alliance for a fee. I've met several people who are Rank 6+ for all 3 countries.

This allows them to switch allegiance for special quests, etc.

NW Tower in West Sarutabaruta. Go through the southern cracked wall. It's a straight shot to more ghouls than you shake a stick at. Seriously, Every single party in the dunes could come to this dungeon and not have to 'wait' for their turn on the next spawn. There is 2 corridors with 1-4 ghouls in them, down the Eastern corridor is a cavernous room to the north which typically holds ~8-12 Ghouls.

And yes these do drop the skulls :)

FYI The Combats in this dungeon Do aggro. There is a large cavern with many many Stink Bats and several Combats. If you catch aggro expect 2-3 combats and twice as many Stink Bats.

Now if Only knew what was through the Firmly Shut cracked wall down there :)

The Firmly Shut cracked wall is for mission 8-2 for Windurst.

Yes - go to Valkurm Dunes with a THF with Treasure Hunter if you want an easy time of it. For an even easier time, have a RNG or BST with for Wide Scan (to quickly locate the ghouls).

I have helped a lot of people get their skulls while they noticed me in the zone and asked for help. I was often at the hidden beach killing leeches as RDM/THF - normally got a skull to drop within 3 or 4 ghouls.

The downside of course is that the undead only spawn at night in outdoor zones.

If you're really anxious to get it quickly, go to Gusgen mines with a high level friend. When they ask you to wait up by the zone, listen to them! I was helping people get theirs a while back and they kept coming down to watch (and get aggro and die) because they were 'bored'.

Hint for the newer players: when you really want help getting rare objects and ask for help - listen to their advice. It normally is really good. If you want to get keys for Kazham, etc - accept the help happily and don't worry that you won't get any XP being in a pt with a much higher level player than you. And most of all - when they ask you to stay out of the way (aka safe) please listen to them - not all higher levs have Raise. ^^

Errrr... you shouldnt be trying to level in the ruins...

Level from 1-5 in Saruta, 5-8 in the northern regions of Both East and west saruta, 8-10 in Tahrongi Canyon, 10-15 in Shakrimi Maze in a party, Slowly making ur way out through Buburimu and take a boat to Selbina, 15-18 in Valkrum dunes, 18-24 in Quifim (Jueno).

And so on.

and why not?

why should every one follow the same path for leveling?

since you can search throw all the known world for members, why not risk the chance of leveling in a place which is not overcamped?

Wow... the Ruins contain absolutely the best place to level low lev players in the entire game, IMHO.

The NW tower in West Saruta (North of Giddeus) is nicknamed 'Gobbie Heaven' by many, and is an excellent place for lev 4-8 I think it is.

There is a decent sized room filled with various low lev bats and gobs - solo or duo there with Signet on and you'll get a lot of fast XP and some decent drops for the level (lots of crystals, wild onions, grass cloth, etc)

The best feature is that there are several side passages that can be used for aggro free resting. Yay.

I went into the ruins in way north east sartabarta, with my thief, and wiped everything easy, first level, then I fought a bomb, and died. Went back with my thief, 10 levels higher than my warrior, and fought the bomb, was too weak for me this time. Still kicked my ass. Shows what? Don't solo in ruins, and don't be a thief.

So to get into the inner all I have to do is go to one of those trees right?

Then when I'm side I look for a crack?

There are, I believe, 6 entrances to the ruins, 3 in each Saru. Look on the maps for the tree trunk looking things, then when inside, look for cracked walls.
I have wandered in several of them, Cardians are too nasty to mess with (14 RDM) but the beetles were not too bad to solo. Just make sure to check before you attack.

If uyou a re a Windurstian doing the first mission you should not be seeing beetles at all. If you are seeing beetles you are going the wrong way for the first mission. The most you should see are goblins and bats. The beetles are behind a cracked wall you should not be goin anywhere near there is another cracked wall you should enter. so follow sum1 who knows the rite way on mission 1 n youll be fine.
Anonymous, Posted: Dec 3rd 2003 6:19pm, Score: Sub-Default, [expand] I find the Outer Horotutu Ruins very frustrating and I do blame Square Enix for it. It seems to me the others get to complete their first mission quite easily in comparison to the Windurstians (is this a mistake? or did Square Enix do this intentionally?). I'm a Level 13 BLM and have been mainly soloing. Leveling up has been so slow in the 12th and 13th that I hesitate to go to the ruins at all now, for fear of losing 200 hard earned (time-played) exp. Those BEETLES do me in. The Goblins and undead are easy for me, no matter what ilk. It's not fair that we have to stay in BABYLAND just because I might have to be Level 18 or something before mastering the Ruins. I have made it to the gate, but it was behind a WARRIOR once and I think he was clearing the way for me. The gate was closed, so I assumed it was because I did not have the map, because I didn't at the time, but now do. OH and does anyone know what a METEORITE is for? And for anyone interested, BLM's like to NUKE when they are angry........kill 'em ALL dead in one drop! And I very seldom use mana. Its not mp that blm's are lacking, its hp. SO TOAST 'EM FROM 2 MILES AWAY!! To level up though for a BLM in the teen's, you have to use the weakest magic and then beat them with your trusty little staff - that's the only way you will get EXP.

first of all your an idiot for trying to solo hard monsters and doing all that "hard work" for 200 exp which you can make in less than 5 min in a party in tahrongi. secondly, dont blame square enix for your trying to play solo at a level where you should be partying. thirdly dont give tips on how to EXP as a blm since you obviously dont know what your doing.

And besides if you are Windurstian and XPing you should be in Tahrongi anyways (or Bubu outpost if you get into a nice party and you want to be daring). Ruins are crap for XPing past level 9-10 or so because they are graded so sharply in mob difficulties..

The meteorite is what you turn in for the first Koran-Moran quest (in Walls).

The root to your frustration probably has something to do with the fact you're trying to lvl playing solo as a mage. Once you get past lvl 10, good luck. I'm a thief and didn't even bother trying to earn exp off a bunch of easies for long. You're right; too frustrating. Do yourself a favor and get in a group with a couple of meat shields and a whm and go to town against toughs and very toughs. I started doing that at around lvl 12 finally and have since skyrocketed to lvl 18 because I get anywhere from 68-200 exp per fight. In fact just yesterday two baddies aggroed and we almost kicked the bucket but because we had a well-rounded party we ALL survived (our whm had 1 hp) and ended up with a total of 398 exp. Shoot even if I woulda died, it only takes one battle like that to get my exp back. So how to go through the ruins.....party. You're probably like me; still getting used to a final fantasy game where you not only can play multiplayer, you have to.

i am not sure if this is a design decision by Square. In the outer ruins in the far north west the Goblins are many in the main chamber but for my level 14 Red Mage come up as too weak to be worthwhile when I check them...

You head towards the left little room off of the big one from the entrance area, you kill some worthless bats and open that crack in the wall, cool, you step into a cave. A Goblin Weaver, ok, then an Ambusher, tough, then Rotten Jelly??? Incredibly tough Rotten Jelly??? I have seen scores of parties being chased out of here by these mobs and have yet to see the end of the cave...

So this little Red Mage is currently undergoing a nutty quest... I am making my way to San Doria to become a carpenter.

i will write from there..

THey don't hunt down there because it gets hard too fast. You can only go 5 steps before it goes from "easy prey" to "tough". So you have to spend hours in one spot (20 foot radius) before you can move in 5 more steps. This is bad design.

If this was a single player game, yes it would be bad design. But it's not. There are plenty of other places for you to go get xp in, so there's nothing wrong with a dungeon type area going from easy to tough. If you haven't learned by now, the rule of this game is "be careful." Don't go waltzing into a new tunnel and assume that what's at the end (or even halfway through) is going to be as easy as what you fought coming into it.

The "gets harder the further you go" idea, as a strict rule, is a silly one and it's one of the many dumb things that mmorpg developers have come to decide is THE way to make an MMORPG. If anyone wants to have any success in this rapidly flooding market, things like that have to show some fluidity.

How come everyone seems to go hunting in tahrongi canyon instead of these horohuto dungeons?? It appears there are lots of high level mobs we can fight in here?
I only went in there a few times to do the first two missions.
I have been to the two tower entrances in east sarutabaruta. I guess there's a 3rd entrance in west sarutabaruta?
