Description

This is a beautiful set of limestone caves discovered by Lord Ordelle, the famed Elvaan explorer. When the map of the area was completed, the shape of the tunnels closely resembled a person's body; this resulted in the alias "the Body Caves," which is still used by the local Elvaan.

Blighted Gloom
# Jan 26 2010 at 12:27 PM Rating: Decent
Took me a while to realize it, but the entrance to the part of I-5 for Blighted Doom Quest is to the left and wraps around instead of to the right as it would seem appropriate on the map. Just trying to save a few others a little time.

For the newbs in all of us:

It took me forever to figure out how to get to the back of the caves where tier 2 goblins and other keyholders spawned. On map 1, the two areas that have the ledges that are inaccessible from the lower area can only be reached by going upstairs to map 2 and falling down the holes in the very back of the area. If you look here: http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/maps/ordelles_caves/general/ the small area from the path labeled D on map 2 is the part I'm talking about. This is also how you get to the room where the NM Morbolger spawns as well as the zone to La Theine Plateau near the Cermet Headstone.

The Aroma Leech is the Notorius Monster that drops the RSE sachet for level 30. Same concept as the RSE key chest quest thru goblin in Jeuno in that you can only get it to pop during your Race RSE week, and i believe it has a 30 min repop on it.

I was in Ordelle's Caves this evening, hunting Fly Agarics, Shriekers, and Clippers (and the occasional Jelly) when I noticed something different.

When you enter the Entrance to Ordelle's Caves located at <H-7> in La Theine, and you follow the path, you come to a room with 5 Fly Agarics (this is at <I-5> on the Ordelle's Caves map). Inside this room is a rock that if you select it (but not activate it), it has a ??? name. I was tempted to activate it, but I'm not sure what it'd do or what it'd spawn. Anyone have any clues on what this particular ??? is for?

the easiest way to do this quest is have someone kill mobs while another person who is invisible and sneaked finds a chest. that's how i did it, got about three pieces in 2 hours and decided to call it quits because the place was starting to get over run.

You don't have to go through Ordelle to get to the stone monument. Simply go down the valley just north of 'The Ephemere' in Le Theine and head north-east I think (whichever way isn't toward Ordelle). It's a one-way through a bunch of tunnels and eventually you'll hit the stone monument.

Edit: heh, Rahanna already posted the exact same thing.. sorry, didn't look below.

I spent upwards of an hour killing Goblins and Stroopers (SAM40/THF20) without getting a key. Finally I moved on to the Beetles and bingo, first one I killed dropped me the key. Plus, it was a MUCH easier fight than the Gobs and Stroops (their max level is far lower). The only problem with Beetles is that they clump together, and they link, but an experienced puller should know how and when to deal with that.

Do NOT come here without either Provoke, Ranged Attack, or a spell to pull with.

I would appreciate some help in some guidance in how to find the ravine exit from Ordell's caves. I'm trying to do the Traveler's Footsteps quest, and all I know is that you have to travel through the caves to get to the ravine that has the stone monument at.

However... I'm having a difficult time trying to locate this exit. I feel like I've run through this whole cave and checked every tunnel.

I would appreciate it if someone could give me directions please!

You don't need to go through Ordelle's to get to the La Theine monument. If you look on your map, you will see a gorge above the "Ephemere," the big pond at the north of the map. If you explore around the edge of that gorge, you will find a ramp leading down into it (it is on the same side as the pond, if I recall correctly). Take this ramp down into the gorge and travel towards the eastern side of the map. You will come to tunnel that leads you into another gorge; go to the end of that one, and you'll be in a third gorge, the easternmost one, which is also north of the crag. At the very end of this is the monument. Note that it's a long walk and you Can choco down to the monument. It's very easy to get, just a long jog ^^.

Strange Apparatus

while looking for chests here for RSE me (37whm) a 38rdm, and 42drk were running around the F-12, G-12 area, when the rdm says he ran through a wall and ended up into a tunnel. right as he said that i found the chest (he had the key and needed it) so he came by and opened it. with that done we then went into the wall and ended up in a tunnel. we go to the end of the tunnel, and it was a dead end. the rdm then suggests there may be another wall that can be walked through. the drk then randomly disapeared from my screen, i soon followed and realized he found another passable wall.

as i passed through, we ended up in another tunnel with a cerment door at the end, when opened, there was small room with a "Strange Apparatus" in it. when you talked to the Strange Apparatus it said it needed a "Infinity Core" and somthing about an "Elemental Chip", then asked for a password for Item Duplication???

we asked the people on our ls, even swithced ls's to see if anyone knew, and the closest thing we got was that it was related to relic item transformations as someone said the ifinity core was a dropped item from Dynamis or somthing along those lines. is there anyone that can help clear what the purpose of this room was?

Don't know if you want to know anymore but what that does is you trade an elemental chip (which is bought off goblins in the cities) and an infinity core which is dropped in Dyanmis (AH retails for a few thousand gil) and it will give you a random item, usualy either Relic Items, clusters, an arcane flowerpot, adaman nugget or cermet chunk.

Actually the spawn rate is exactly 15 minutes after they're killed. Two of them will spawn at that room and the drop rate is 1/6. Good luck.

Napalm is NOT NM.. more than one can spawn at a time in a little room around G/H-9/10 on a map that has a La Thiene zone in the southwestern corner. (The section of the map I'm talking about can be found here.) Usually spawn about every 5-10 minutes. You have to be fairly fast to catch them, as a "rarely dropping mob" spawns in this room as well, and people are fast to voke anything that spawns there. Also beware of the elementals that spawn in that room (Air and Water are the only two I have seen.)

Edit: fixed an idiotic typo. ^^

Throughout this guide I'll be referring to the excellent maps at
http://oidpag.com/index.php?p=maps
[Update: this site is down, so I've adjusted the text to refer to grid locations instead. The next link also has maps, they just aren't as well annotated.]

Also check out the information at
http://www.zebraflood.com/ninja/rse/rse.html

Before you head for the caves, be sure to get the RSE quest from Guttrix in Lower Jeuno, or you won't be able to get a pattern and you'll ***** things up for other RSE questers.

To get to the interesting part of the caves, enter from the ravine at F-6 in La Theine. This takes you to the top of the level 1 map. Inside, take a left across the pool and follow the hall down to I-6, which takes you to level 3.

On the level 3 map, follow the path around from I-6 to H-9. Be aware that the large rooms along the way have Goblin Muggers, Leechers and Gamblers, so if you're in your low 30s they will aggro, so Invisible is recommended.

In the path to H-9 you may start to see Seeker Bats, which also aggro. Sneak will prevent this, and will also prevent Too Weak bats from going aggro when you rest.

The stairs at H-9 take you back up to level 1. This section of the level consists of four small rooms with holes in the middle. If you're hunting for keys, you want to fall down the hole in the SE room, the one in H-11/12. Make sure you have Sneak (for Stropers) and Invisible (for 30s Goblins) on before dropping.

You will now be back on level 3. This room contains Goblin Pathfinders, Smithies, Shamen, and Furriers, which drop keys, though rarely. It also contains Stropers, which drop keys more often, but are much tougher than the other key mobs; unless you have help from a mid-40s or higher character, you probably want to leave them alone.

If you clear out this room without finding enough keys, take the stairs up in I-11. This takes you up to level 2, which is populated by Goliath Beetles; these also dropped keys for me, and are said to have the highest drop rate. The spawn rate is high enough that if you keep moving back and forth between levels, there should always be key mobs available to fight.

A Stroper Chyme also spawns up here periodically, and is also said to drop keys. The square room in H-10 on level 2 has more Goblins in it; I got a key from one of these.

The SW exit to La Theine from G-10 on level 2 leads to a ravine with no way out. My party mate who investigated it found a Cermet Headstone there; this is apparently for the Zilart Missions (see followup).

When you're ready to leave Ordelles, go to H-5 on level 2; this takes you down to the waterfall room on level 1, which features in the San d'Oria Squire's Test II quest. This is a one-way trip, so I don't recommend dropping down the ledge until you're ready to leave (or you've already checked all the other treasure chest spawns).

Note that if you're trying to solo this quest in your 30s, one relatively safe way to find a key is to fight Goliath Beetles in the passage just south of the Waterfall room, the point marked 5 on the level 1 map. See the Squire's Test II quest for information on the best way to get here from La Theine. They don't spawn very fast, but they're in a controlled area so you don't have to worry too much about other random aggro.

Once you have a key, it's time to find a chest. Assuming you've been hunting key mobs across the stairs between levels 2 and 3, here's the route I recommend:

Go back down to the level 3 room with the Goblins (I-11) and check the corners there.
Drop down the ledge and head around to H-9 again.
On level 1, check the spawn points in H-12 and G-12.
Drop down the hole in G-12.
On level 3, check the corners of the ledge around G-11. Do check the SW corner, even though the map doesn't say there's a spawn there; that's where I found one of my chests.
Drop down the ledge and head around to H-9 again.
On level 1, drop down the hole at H-12.
On level 3, go up the stairs at I-11.
On level 2, check the spawn in the south room, H-11.

At this point, you've checked all the spawns except the ones in the waterfall room, so head north to H-5 and check the corners of the Waterfall room on level 1.

If you see a message about someone else finding a pattern, that means that the chest has moved and you need to start your search over again. If you haven't seen that message and you still can't find a chest, I don't know what to tell you. Apparently if someone not on the quest opens a chest it takes 30 minutes to respawn, so you may need to wait a bit and try again.

BTW, if you have your THF up to a decent level, you can open the chests with tools and skip the whole key-hunting step; when I was helping some friends today we helped a THF get two pieces in like 15 minutes. I (a WHM) escorted her around with Sneak and Invisible, she opened the chest, then our BLM sent her back to Jeuno with Warp II. She turned in the pattern, got a teleport to Holla, and came back. In the meantime, I had found the chest again, so she was able to go right there. If you have mage friends, this is a great way to do it.

Good luck!

Yes there is a way out of the ravine. You popped out in a ravine just north of the lake in La Theine. The way up is on the right side as you leave Ordelle. There are three ravines that are connected together through tunnels. The last ravine has a monument at the end of it. This is for a quest you get from the mayor in Selbina.

No, this is a different ravine, far to the south in H-10. The Cermet Headstone is not the monument for the Explorer's Footsteps quest.

Update: It seems to be for a the "Zilart Mission".

Excellent info Valyana. Too bad I didn't find it until now. I spent two hours in there yesterday with a ranger scanning the place and two people with treasure hunter. We all came out empty handed.
