55rdm/27blm wandering around all innocently with nothing but a sword, shield, full field gear and 5 stacks of pickaxes.
I jump down the hole - bam - aggro.
I could hold him off but all my energy went into keeping him at arms length and was doing nothing back. Ended up chaincast-warping home and wondering what the heck hit me.
Now I know.
Think I'll come back and remind him how bad tempered I am in a couple of levels - with some proper gear.

oh come on, ur rdm lvl 55, just put on ur armor and whoop him, I know you can, teach him a lesson.....and make it last a long time...i would if i were 3 lvls higher ^^
Ran into this guy mining today, so me and some of the other miners teamed up. We were all in our mining gear and party 53MNK, 67WHM, and 35BST. So we start the fight and the BST immediately loses her pet, so the WHM has to focus on keeping the BST alive while I'm getting owned by this weapon. Well eventually I die while the WHM was spamming Cure III on me. Then about 10 minutes and one Benediction later the WHM dies and soon the BST. Well the WHM has Reraise 2 on so he got back up, tractored our bodies, and Raise 2-ed us. Wasted the weapon down to about 1/4th hp.
While were healing a 60 DRK runs by and engages the NM. Well to make a long story short, he 2hrs but eventually dies. Drain was keeping him alive forever, and he got the NM down to 1/6 hp, but he couldn't keep it up. Then our WHM tractors and raises the DRK, and he joins our pt. He has full gear on, so he tanks the NM and we beat it easily. No drop.

I'm PLD61 ...I drop down the hole and see him... he aggros..
I had no defense at all... He was almost dead... I used 2 hour he cast aero2 and of course i died.. i was shouting for help then after im dead a 70+ rdm came and took abotu 5 minutes to finish what was left >< this thing is way over level 48

If he drops a level 47 weapon, he's gonna be higher than Lv 48. Generally NMs drop items 10-20 levels lower than thier own levels....

I was making my usual runs in Gusgen today and I found the hole to drop down where the ghost and Faul Meet spawn to check on the 2 mining spots there. I had never seen this guy before or even heard of it for that matter. I made my way to the hole to drop down and as soon as I land, he's on top of me. I tried to Flash him them warp but Flash didn't last at all - I died. Lucky for me I was able to get a Raise II from a fellow miner. I watched a lvl 60+ whm fight this guy and it took him a good 30 minutes. He didn't get the drop ; ; HNM with a horrible drop, blah. I'll make sure to sneak/invis before falling down that hole again >_<
Don't get me wrong, this is one nasty NM. I fought it twice so far. First time, I was a 53 RDM/BLM mining. Tried to fight it. Got hit pretty bad. Sleep II'ed, and ran. Cast deodorize, hoped to lose him. He followed me anyway ><. But... since Sleep II worked so well... I just Sleep IIed him, fully buffed myself, fully debuffed him, and slowly wittled down his HP, preventing magic with Silence, and Draining and Aspiring for 60-100 HP and 30-60MP. I had to sleep him and rest a few times. All in all, it was pretty darn hard, and I almost died at least once. Took me 20+ minutes, but I won, and got 43 exp... and no drop :-( Still, felt good to beat him solo at such a low level^^
Saw him the other day, mining with my 42 WHM (Tele-dem then Warp out). I dropped down, then he SPAWNED (I didn't just see him, he SPAWNED) right in front of me. I freaked, moved away, and warped out. I got my RDM (55 now) and subbed my 25 THF. I chocoed there, hoping to find him in time. When I dropped down, I saw:
"Juggler Hecatomb misses [name]"
I think "Ah, crap" But then, I see it moving away, and its name is in white. So, I start chasing it (the person was obviously running for dear life). When it stopped running for a moment, I used Sleep II on it. I noticed it had a sliver of HP missing, but I hoped it wouldn't have any effect on the drop (didn't have much choice anyway). I was surprised at how easy he was this time. He still hit pretty hard, but with Stoneskin, Phalanx, Blink, and full debuffs on him, I hardly ever actually got hit. I was AMAZED how much he missed me. Maybe it was Blind + Evasion Bonus. He was also Paralyzed a LOT. I had to Sleep II him once to rest. The whole thing I think took me about ~15 minutes. When I won, 10 exp and no drop ; ;
0/2 on the drop for this guy, hoping to soon make it 1/3 ^^;
EDIT: Noticed his job is marked as WAR. This guy is definitely a RDM. He casts like crazy, everything from Aero II to Cure III. He also used Dispel on me, so that clinches it.

It sounds like his level is actually posted correct or near correct above based on the experience you gained... I'd say maybe he goes up to level 52 tops.
I was roaming around Gusgen looking for a mob to drop a key for my RSE quest. Had no map, didn't know where I was going. Fell down this hole and this guy was right in front me. I was like, oh look, a NM. I'm high enough where I should be able to take anything in this place. I was a 54 pld going in there. This guy absolutely raped me. I took away about 1/6 of his HP before I died. I'll get my revenge on him later tonight when I take my LS with me.
What's the POS of this hole? Isn't this guy just really deep in the mines, where the MNK AF1 ghost is, or no?

This guy is really weak. I've fought and killed him twice, only the first time was a challenge. First time was as a Lv. 53 RDM, paired up with a 56 DRG. Took me two full pools of MP to keep the DRG alive. I assume it was only that difficult because the DRG was wearing mining gear at the time. (sucky defense) I also killed him yesterday in a group. We had BLM, WHM, RDM, RDM, THF. The THF tanked with NIN sub (only Ichi) and he got hit a grand total of once the entire fight. Not much of a challenge.

Hah, this fight was farely easy for a Beastmaster =). Although, it used its ws on me and killed me, it was a very close fight. I was 1 hit away from killing him and I could have used my TP but my keyboard didn't respond lol. After I died, a lvl 75THF/37WHM comes by and finishes it off...but at least I got a raise hehe and he didn't get the drop so its all good =D.
So like many of you, I'm there, in mining gear, and drop through the hole on this guy. First I say to myself "These things don't spawn here"...then I think "Wait thats an NM name for sure". Impossible to guage...so I wonder, "Why hasn't someone grabbed this yet?" Then I found out why. Starts hitting me for over 100 dmg a shot, and the occasional miss. I was lucky enough to resist his debuffs, but my DEF just wasn't going to cut it. After getting through all his blink and stoneskin (and a recast blink) I finally chipped off what I generously would say is 1/20 of his HP. Then I just hit Manafont Warp. Thats as a 60 BLM too...no way this thing is 48! Just like "the camera adds 10 pounds", and NM adds 10 lvls.

Yeah I was down there mining it and though since this said lvl 48 I'd give it a try. Well one wasn't expecting it up so I was mining and in my gear. drop down the hole and there he was. Well looked and had my full gear but no scythe just my GS well I had the health down to 1/3 and decided it was to hard. Being a 61 DRK and if I had my Scythe may of took it out but still was a rough one beating him at that point so I just Escaped out of the mess.
soloed him at lvl 62 thf/whm and got the drop prob would've died if i sub ninja lol

Like I said it took around 20 minutes for a level 75 RDM to kill it. This thing is no joke.
killed him last night. got a wind crystal and 18xp

i started the fight w/ Raging Fists and immediately went to hundred fists. partner fired hundred fists after she was able to kick off a Raging Fists. we won with both of us having about 300hp left.
if i realized it was weak to fire, we would have spinning attack -> raging fists for Fusion which probably would have sped things up.

if i realized it was weak to fire, we would have spinning attack -> raging fists for Fusion which probably would have sped things up.
Is this a random spawn? Because I've been mining in Gusgen for a while now, since back when I was in the 30's... and yesterday was the first time that I have ever seen this. I got lucky and it started to cast paralyze while I was casting warp x_x
I mined in Gusgen for 2-3 weeks without seeing it, then I saw it 2 days in a row.
I decided to try my hand at mining.. and lo and behold Mr. Hecatomb spawns and decides he doesn't like how I look ('mining green' must be his gang colour).
I fight for about three seconds before I decide he's way too tough for me (level 50 monk with nothing but mining gear and Tacky Hooks). So I book it back to the entrance, where there are two JP whm in full AF. I'm resting outside when they come out after a while. I ask, '{Party} {Notorious Monster}?' and they agree to team up. If I had to guess they weren't all that much higher than I was.
Basically we all waled away on the thing until he finally died after about 5+ AOE and a couple single WS that did around 200-500 on me each. He was going nuts at the end and the whms both ran out of mana just as it fell.

I was mining and my ally starting running and I saw his life his yellow instantly. He was a 50 BLM. We trained it to the door and took a few swipes and nothing chipped off it. I am a level 50 THF. Then a 75 RDM came in a solo whooped it, however the fight took about 20 minutes and I came back to check his progress as I mined. Didn't get the drop. I nabbed a shot if you want to use it for the site.

A lvl 60 Pld "soloed" this mob. I believe Isette used his/her two hour and of course me and a couple of our friends helped buff his/her up with Haste and a couple of cure 3s.

This is a hard a$$ mother phooker..
First attempted with 46 paladin and my 46 white mage squire. He was handing our a$$es to us, so we teleported when mana was real low.. only took him down 10%. I have over 300 defense when I eat broiled crab....
Brought another 49 Dragoon to help. One the second run, the Dragoon bit the dust with the quickness. Drew too much aggro and I wasn't prepared for it.
Third run... we bring along another 46 white mage. So we're whacking away at this guy with 46 whm, 46 whm, 46 pld, 49 drg... and it's a LONG fight... Didn't bother trying to get aggro away from the dragoon. Impossible with the number of penta thrusts he was throwing out, and believe me I tried everything.. provoke, shield bash, flash, cures... nothing could take aggro..
When the beast finally died, we were rewarded with a whopping 32exp.... nothing else....

Heh, you could have Covered him, and he could have Jumped to get aggro off... :X

this is one tough Lv 48 NM! Almost killed my Lv 55!
