He's not a "man." He's a dark elf. There are lots of these in The Eldieme Necropolis, which you'll see when doing LB1 and later AF quests.

I was running by (I was a 47 RNG/nin at this point), minding my own business, when I saw a lvl 53 whm trying to SOLO this guy. So, me and this 41 WHM (who also happened to be nearby) ask if he needs help... so, we do. This guy is insane. I hit him REALLY hard (100-200 per shot), but his health is crazy, and the 53 WHM did everything he could to keep me alive. I ended up dying right after I got my Eagle Eye Shot off which basically killed him because they won the battle a minute later. So, the 41 WHM wants to do it, and gets his level 50 DRK friend to come. Exit 53 WHM. We build our TP up to 300% and go in and fight. We get owned. It wasn't even close, maybe a lil' past the halfway point on the guys health? If you plan on doing this, either get higher level help or a good party. i.e. a Tank and a Damage Dealer. If a 50 DRK, 47 RNG, and a 41 WHM isn't enough...obviously, the guy is hard.
(Note: the WHM didn't Benediction though and I didn't have Eagle Eye Shot, so the battle could have been different)

Wow, this guy is nasty.

Firstly, Marchelute spawns AT NIGHT when a WHM who has triggered the AF1 quest examines a "???" spot near the song runes and senses an evil presence. So you don't need to worry about him appearing to randomly kill lowbies unless some prat spawns him and does a runner.

Marchelute is a shade, ie. undead. When you fight him, I would recommend a full, balanced party of 43s or higher, especially the tank. This guy can really dish out damage. He is constantly attacking with that cool Katar, his bow, I hear that he counter-attacks occasionally, and the fearsome dimensional death. He also has alot of HP so he takes quite some killing.

Dimensional Death is the reason you MUST take a Paladin with you, he uses it frequently and it is VERY damaging. It hit our MNK for over 700 damage once, 300+ the rest of the times she grabbed agro. It is far less damaging to a Paladin.

Also, I'm not sure but he seems to have slightly different AI to regular monsters. Our lvl51 PLD used Invincible in order to keep hate (we had 4 people use their WS at 300% for a nice long skillchain, which did over 2,000 damage in total) and the WAR, MNK and DRG all grabbed hate from Invincible at one point or another. He's one scary *******, we fought him twice in one night for my and another WHM's AF1, and he turned on our 46MNK and killed her in each fight.

Recommended party setup:

All level 45 or higher, especially the tank. PLD is essential since they can withstand dimensional death. Besides the PLD and an alert WHM, the rest of the party can be damage dealers. It probably can be done with a level 41-44 party, but I would not recommend it unless you fancy a challange.

CHARGE YOUR TP BEFORE THE FIGHT. When the PLD has used voke, flash and cure III and his voke timer has about 10 seconds to go, have everyone unleash their 300% WS on March to take a nice big chunk out of his HP (a skillchain works wonders). PLD uses voke again and/or keeps hate in some other way, fight continues... The key to a safe fight is keeping hate on the PLD and keeping the PLD's HP in high-yellow or white. Using the TP early also means your melee fighters can uses their WS twice in the duration of the fight.

If someone grabs hate and goes into the red, don't hold back on benediction. He can easily land another hit before you finish casting a cure spell.

I have to say the sheer power of this guy actually makes up for the suckiness of the WHM AF1 quest cutscenes/dialogue.

You dont have to be a Whm to trigger it, you just have to have the quest.

I was under the impression that only WHM could start the quest. Do you mean if someone has triggered it and then changed jobs to kill Marchelute?
did this last weekend

helped 2 whm friends with their AF over the weekend ... pretty close fight. Our first PT setup was 44 PLD (me ^^), 2 whm (52,40), and 1 blm (57 no manafont)... everyone ran out of mana, both whm had to use benediction while I had no choice but to use Invisible. It was a very close match .... nearly came into dying, lol.

The second time we fought him we got a level 44 Mnk :D This time we were smart enough to build our TP 300% before the fight. Seraph Blade seems to do pretty nice damage at 300% ^^ Mnk let loose 100 fist + haste from whm .... the hate was pretty immense as i had to struggle to get it back ... and I didn't lol ... all in all, we won again :P

on a side note, make sure your whm has blink or stoneskin on ... it will attack the whm first.

So Im minding my own business Camping Golden bat, I ran from gustav area to other tunnel and on my way back i think i hit the water and see someone running towards me. but the name is yellow like your average monster. Im thinking GM? but wheres the GM in front of his name? Next thing I know I take a hit for 110. Blow Raging fists (Im not gonna go down like a sukka) and proceed to eat Dimensional Death multiple times. Then it runs off to slaughter the PT that triggered the spawn. I just wanted my Golden bat. TT

LV40whm, 2blm 55abouts, LV52monk (me :D) and a DRG57 took him down but he was hitting really hard on the drg, he spammed penta so he tanked^^

I recommend at PT of 50s~ with pld.. it hit very hard with dimensional death. Also no one had provoke and when it spawned it shot an arrow on the whm that made critical and whm went to yellow/orange hp instantly.
Not Easy, Not Hard

I took this guy down as a level 40 WHM with a level 49 Ninja, Level 49 Samurai, and a level 46 Bard helping. The Bard popped soul voice and did double defense boosts, and the Samurai also popped his two-hour an did his single-man skillchain thing. Still, this guy took some wearing down. The ninja tried to tank at first, but as soon as his blink went the ninja started dying, so the Samurai took over tanking (he was a Galka) and I had to spam Cure III on him every few seconds, as he was getting hit pretty hard by physical attacks/ranged attacks and that damned Dimensional Death, which was hitting him from anywhere between 80 and 256 damage. The Samurai managed to hold aggro with provoke and the massive damage he was dealing.

Still, we managed to kill him. Took about 3-4 minutes of wearing down, though I almost ran out of MP (had 560+ at the start of battle). Even a Tarutaru WHM with Electrum Hairpin and two Electrum Rings almost ran out of MP here, but its good we killed him because my benediction was still 20 min away ;/
no way in hell is this 41

Okay i just did this with a pt of 49pal; 48drk, 48sam, 47nin; and me a 45whm; he killed the 48sam;
and then we killed him i'm sorry but the pal said "NO way is this thing 41; its 51!!" and I got a total of 6xp; and i know thats not possible of a 51 monster; so.. this is just odd..

Oh and he spawns by you hitting the ??? and it takes about 4-5 secs to come up; and he IMMEDIATELY Targets the whm that spawn him; thus, have ur tank ready to provoke; and he uses arrows; they hit me for like 150 or so each
Stronger than lv.41
# Jan 23 2004 at 4:39 AM Rating: Default
There is no way in hell this thing is only lv.41. When our little group of 3 level 40's and a level 30 went after it, we barely managed to get it to half health. It completely wasted us. It spams an attack called dimensional death once every 5-10 seconds, was hitting for 293 or higher.

I would have to agree with the last poster on this. My linkshell did this and the other AF1 quests for our members this last weekend. For this particular battle we had a lv 40 DRK, 41 PLD, 40 WHM, 41 WAR (me), and a very nice lv 65 SAM who was fishing at the time on the secret beach volunteered to assist when he found out we were doing this quest.
Even with the high level SAM helping us Marchelute still just about mopped the floor with us. His Dimensional Death attack hit the PLD for over 200 damage a couple of times, and was hitting the high level for over 100. If he's really only lv 41....wow.

On a side note, this has to be the most impressive NM I've come across personally, so far. When he appeared I was actually stunned for a couple of seconds before I joined the battle. ^^

Triggered Spawn
# Jan 21 2004 at 5:41 PM Rating: Excellent
This is not a random spawn, it is a triggered spawn. One must kill this NM in order to finish the White Mage AF1 quest.

It is a triggered with a ??? on a wall near the song runes.

Also, Marchelute is a man, not a traditional monster.
