Hello all;

I happened to see a shout for this NM last night in Lower Jeuno and since I had my Uggalepih Offering for it I decided to help out.

The pt set up was 10 people. Only me and the BRD were 75 the rest of the group was in the mid 60s and the PLD was 71. Before popping the NM clear out the room for obvious adds during fight and for added TP.

NM: He begins the fight always with Carbuncle's Searing Light which will do 400-500+ damage on anyone not buffed. If you have a BRD, have him keep Light Carol up at all times and mages keep Stoneskin up at all times.

Have any melees who have fought alot of Tonberries reset hate [Trade 3 Gold coins 8-10k each to Magephaud in Norg I-8, and talk to the Tonberry Priest F-11 across the room of the Hornetneedle NM in the Temple], as the SAM and DRK were taking close to 1k dmg from Everyone's Grudge. PLD took no dmg for he had reset hate.

There is nothing you can do about Carbuncle, he pops in 2-3 times during fight for SL, but you can sleep and silence the NM's Elemental. Have 1 RDM keep an eye on the Ele for it can do good damage if left unattended.

This NM has a sizable ammount of HP. I was nuking him for 400+ normal lvl III nukes, and 500+ Magic Bursts. It took us about 10 minutes each run to kill him and we did a total of 4 runs all together for the Mitts. 1 Light Spirit dropped only once along with many coats, some lanterns and alot of Light Crystals.

With a greater number of people this NM will go down alot faster, but you go fight with who you can. Dark Skillchains hurt his more because he is Light based. Just treat him like any other NM, come prepared and take care of whats goin on and he'll be easy.

Edit: Added <pos> for those that dont know where he can be found. In the room where the Manipulator pops [past the Temple Guardian] enter from the doors in I-10 or J-10 [either side], and the ??? for Crimson TP is in H-6.

Last night I was in an alliance that had planned to fight this guy 10 times, although we only did so about 5 or 6 times. There's a few things to note about him which makes this NM considerably tougher then many others you may have fought before..

First of all, if you're a mage of any kind, Stoneskin is essential to your staying alive during this battle. If you're a Red Mage, you'll also want to keep Phalanx up as well. This guy's Astral Flow has a HUGE area of effect, so you literally have to be on the edge of the targeting range in order to not get hit by it.

We had a Lv70+ BRD casting Light Carol on the main party, which made a massive difference in the damage Astral Flow was capable of doing; indeed, the one time it went down was the only time Astral Flow was strong enough to punch thru my buffs and actually cause me damage; it would hit me for 0 the rest of the time, and only did about 200ish to the Paladin. Those without Carol and other buffs who got hit took 400-800 damage from it.

There's a few things about this NM's 2-hour which make it very deadly. First of all, the MOMENT he spawns, he will Astral Flow. He appears with an Elemental (standard random selection that Tonberries can summon), AND when he does Astral, he will spawn Carbuncle for about 2 seconds and he'll do Searing Light, then vanish. Thus, killing his pet is both worthless and a waste of time, since it'll mean he will have time to do Astral Flow again.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Crimson-toothed Pawberry can not only do Astral Flow multiple times, he WILL do it every minute or so. And even if you kill his elemental, Carbuncle will appear for a split-second and zap you anyways. It's bad enough fighting NMs which do Mighty Strikes or even Hundred Fists multiple times.. but Astral Flow?? You'd better hope that if you're in range you don't have any -Light resist decreasing items..

In order to actually kill the NM, you'll need a full, well-equipped, food-using party of people at 65 or higher.. however, you will want another party (or at least half a party of people in their 70's) around because you only have a short time to kill him before his friends start respawning in the room where he is. And since it's best to fight the NM in the center of the room while the weaker characters stay at the stairway, hopefully out of range of Astral Flow, this doesn't leave you many choices where to battle.

Melee damage dealers are extremely effective vs this NM, because as it is a Summoner, it's physical stats and HP aren't nearly as high as they could be (fortunately). It took my alliance a considerable time to slay this NM because we had NO melee damage dealer (except a Hume Monk who died during the 2nd Astral Flow in the 1st battle and then left..) and several lower-levels who literally died more then a dozen times just because they were desperate to get their Mitts.

So your basic strategy is to keep Light Carol, Stoneskin + Phalanx up, while anyone who cannot cast such spells STAYS THE HELL AWAY. Tanks who use Ninja will NOT work vs this guy; a Paladin or Warrior/Monk is your only real choice. Have the Bard singing Lullaby to sleep the Elemental whenever possible; if it happens to be a Light Elemental (worst case scenario), then you'll need a Red or Black Mage to focus on keeping it asleep so it doesn't keep casting -ga spells and hitting people. Keep him in the center of the room, with the weaker characters and mages near the stairs, and have your extra friends handy to dispose of the respawning Tonberries, or at least to distract them until the NM is dead.

If ya like what ya read, please rate up. I hope this provided some valuable information to make your battle for the Carbuncle Mitts go much more smoothly. ^^

# Oct 11 2004 at 1:36 PM Rating: Decent
There's a hidden feature for -2 per tick on the upkeep cost of avatars (might just be carby, i forget).
RE: ?
# Oct 21 2004 at 10:35 AM Rating: Decent
The average MP cost for Carbuncle is 5 per tick-
These gloves have a -4 mp per tick latent effect, and along with a light staff you cancel out the mp carbuncle requires to stay out.

I had some fun with this fight...ok, not really. First off, I dont enjoy dieing, but in this case, I LOVED IT!!!! Yea, as a 57whm with stoneskin and a dark staff armed (+15 light), this dude rocked my world with 656 damage with searing light. He used it like 4-5 times each fight, and we had to fight him twice. The damn SL has some range too, I was way over in the other hallway, the one without the Iron Maiden in it, for obvious reasons, and he nailed me with that. I tell ya, nothing like casting a cure3, and BOOM you go down. But, I raised myself and healed and was fine the rest of the way. The second fight i was way back enough, and he didnt get me. Anyone who goes for these, the fight is tough, but really, getting there into the room is even tougher. Once we got into the door, we got aggro from the Manipulator walking around outside, and then we had to rock all the tonberrys right inside. It was not fun, but we did get through it.

I bid you the best of luck if and when u go for it. One more thing, if you do go it, make sure you have your offering. Kinda important. Bringing your friends and tanks and high lvl help is one thing, but the item that pops the NM is a totally different can of worms...

No I'd agree he is 75...maybe 75-77ish. With a PT of 67-71 we were able to take this guy down. The only reason you'd need more is due to the Troat Stab and Everyone's Grudge attack. An alliance of 2 PTs basically murders this guy. Expect deaths though, it will happen. Especially since he isnt the only Tonberry there, clear the room first then pop him :)

Throat Stab is very easy to evade, due to its a melee attack with casting time. I always fight Tonberrys with my lock on off, because when I see Throat Stab I just run back and then continue to fight.

Also NM tonberrys do not use Everyones Grudge, instead they use a more deadly (10x more powerfull) attack called Everyone's Rencor...

Both Grudge and Rencor's damage depend on how many tonberrys you have killed, if you Call for Help when you are fighting a tonberry you recive no hate at all <- usefull tip when you are doing something like Windy 7-2.

Also when you fight a NM it gives you way more Tonberry hate then when you kill a normal tonberry.

Hope that helps ^^
RE: Tips
# Aug 17 2004 at 1:47 AM Rating: Default
1) i killed him 3 times, and he never used everyone's rancor, however he did use everyone's grudge
2) that call for help trick does not work, i tested it during z4
3) ^^
RE: Tips
# Sep 15 2004 at 4:46 PM Rating: Decent
Calling for help does work, but only for future grudges and rancors. If your hate is high, it will still hit you hard.

I also tested this on ZM4.

I reset my hate, then we killed all the tonberries in the paining room 2 times, calling for help each time. In the BCNM I got hit with Everyone's Rancor for 0 like 5 times. I was dying laughing.

At any rate, Everyone's Rancor is alot storonger than Everyone's Grudge. I believe that rancor is the total tonberry hate accumulated by the entire party combined, while grudge is only your tonberry hate. I could be wrong on this but it has seemed pretty accurate so far.
RE: Tips
# Sep 19 2004 at 2:50 PM Rating: Decent
Everyone's rancor did 6500+ to our paladin during ZM4, it was rather unpleasant. We still won though, thanks to our bard.

You need to get a Uggalepih offering from one of 6 rooms on the 2nd map. It is a ??? and you need to nter from Rancor's Den.

Trade the Offering to the ??? on the 4th map and he spawns
