contacting a GM right now to see if maybe something technical is keeping me from getting drop.

I've been camping this guy pretty often over the past week. I am about 0/8 on the earring drop and 8/16 on the claim, but the experience has still been educational. He spawns in the room to the right of the first fork where all the cockatrices, miners, hunters, bouncers, and enchanters are. See www.ffxi-atlas.com for a map pinpointing this location. As a note, I recommend level 65+ for soloing this little guy. I'm sure someone could do it under 65, but it'd be challenging and a close call. If you're under 65, enlist some help. For a semi-skilled player, he isn't much more difficult to solo than the other goblins that spawn in the room.

First step is to make the claim.

Spawn Time
He spawns exactly 1h45m-2h30m after his last death, and only in 15 min intervals. So for example, if he was killed at 2:00, he will pop at either 3:45,4:00,4:15, or 4:30. Knowing exactly when he is most likely going to show up gives you an advantage. It's a good idea to buff up before he is going to spawn, but sometimes it tips off other players when you are casting to keep sharp and be ready. Throw them off by casting the long lasting buffs, like protect/shell, fairly early. As a note, he is not a lottery pop. He will pop during his window, even if you don't kill any of the other mobs at all.

Clearing Linkable Mobs
If there is no competition for the earring, take some time to clear out the goblins on the south side of the room where our favorite NM pops. No one wants unexpected links when the time comes to take Mysticmaker down. I suggest not clearing out the cockatrices though. If the room is mob free and competition *does* show up, having some mobs in the way gives you a better chance to claim over those who would spam abilities, especially if you know when he is popping and you are paying the most attention at the crucial times. If there is heavy competition, sometimes its better not to clear any mobs. The regular goblins respawn avery 15 minutes anyway, so you may loose the claim while fighting one of the NQ gobs. During the heavy competition hours, you will just have to learn how to pull Mystic while avoiding linking his buddies. The two hallways on the south side of the room are good places to take him since no goblins seem to inhabit there. The one on the east side wit the scorpion is my favorite.

Positioning Yourself
After seeing him spawn a couple times you start to get to know where he most likely is going to pop in the room. During times with low competition, the idea is to find a position that is in pulling range with the most of his pop points. I personally have found a good place near the south east corner of the room to plant myself, where i can cast on him from any of his pop points except one (which is on the north west corner). If he pops too far to claim, don't fret just calmly run into range and try to get him anyway. If you're lucky, you're paying more attention than the other campers. Now, if the place is jampacked full of people competing for this guy, it will be hard to claim this way. I've found that in this case its good to find a weak spot, thus the pop point(s) that are not covered by many/any of the competition. This narrows down your chances if he pops elsewhere, but greatly increases your chances to get him if he pops where you are targeting. Using this method i was able to get the claim over were nearly 15 other JP players. Still having a hard time claiming with all the competition thwarting your plans every time you camp? One way to beat the heat is to enlist a couple dozen of your friends to help claim. Several vokes are better than one.

When the NM Goes Unclaimed
Just because you, or someone else, gets the claim initially, that doesn't make it out of grabs. There are some rare chances that our buddy will go unclaimed and get taken. If you loose to someone, keep your target on Mysticmaker and follow him around spamming your fastest spell/ability. There is a slim chance that you will be able to take the claim from your opponent. To be fair though, the times I stole claim this way I'd send a tell to the person "{Team Up?} {Cast Lots.}". They usually agree and I'd invite them to PT. Always remember to treat other players with common courtesy, as it will make your FFXI experience more enjoyable in the long run. If you are the one to get the claim, there are things you can do to avoid loosing it. First things first, engage him immediately after you claim. Thanks to SE, sometimes mobs names will turn yellow if they aren't being attacked. Second, be careful of sleep. If it lands and you are asleep for too long, he will become fair game. If you are under level 70 and want to assure yourself that this won't happen, bring a poison potion. Drink it during the fight and you won't fall asleep. This one is common sense, but, don't try to sleep him and rest up. He will go unclaimed.

Now that you have the claim, now its time to move in for the kill! (or barely survive, either way)

Strategies For the Win
You're already buffed up, you get the claim, you pull Mysticmaker over into a corner, all is good! Now what? Well, Mysticmaker is a BLM type mob. He melees softly, nukes hard, and has low physical defense. If you can land silence, congratulations it just got easier! I personally haven't been able to get it to stick though. Your best bet to surviving our friend here is Stoneskin, as it is excellent for absorbing nukes. Keeping stoneskin on as often as posssible makes our friend Mystic nearly harmless, thus subbing WHM or RDM if you aren't one of those as your main would be a good idea. I don't recommend wasting mp on expensive spells, such as Haste, Regen III, or big nukes. Take your time to emerge victorious. In the middle of the fight, buddy will go Manafont happy and barrage you with high tier nukes. Do your best to keep stoneskin up even though it will fall fast. After manafont wears off, he will return to normal. Do a little damage cleanup with a cure or regen or two, and return to normal strategies. As a 75 whm using a only cast regen and stoneskin strategy, I only ate up about 250mp and had full HP when I finished him off.

Handling Goblins That Link
On a day of hefty competition, when there is no time to clear the NQ Gobs, there is a decent chance that you will get a link. If you are camping with friends, no problem. Have one of them take on the link while you concentrate on the NM personally. Fighting solo and get a link? Uh oh. Fighting two Goblins at once makes stoneskin worthless, as it will most likely wear off before the recast timer is ready. What to do? Well, there are a couple options. You could try to sleep the link. This is the more challenging route. There is always those unlucky times when sleep just won't land, but usually you can get away with casting sleep on a link and recasting every time he wakes up. Sleep not an option or you want a more safer route? Offer a truce with one of your fellow campers. Send them a tell "{Team Up?}{Cast Lots.}", and have them help you take the link. This gives you some piece of mind that the battle will go smoothly at the expense of a chance to loose the drop to a bad lot. Ocassionally one of the other campers will pull the link out of kindness, but don't count on it.

Hopefully when you kill Mystic you get the earring, but, going on 0/8 personally, I'm starting to wonder how rare the drop is. His other drops are worth 1k-10k and he drops 6k gil, so even if you don't get the grand prize you at least made a small profit. If someone else gets the claim/kill, remember to be courteous. Don't curse them, slap them, or MPK them. Congratulate them and plan ahead to claim the next one for yourself.

Good luck to everyone and happy hunting.

Level 62 RDM soloed it, walk in the park with Stoneskin/Phallanx. RDM 60 should be able to kill it too.

Rate Up. Very good post :)

<<< 61 MNK killed him 3 times along with a link or two. Yeah I still get aggroed there but its nothing a few punches in the right places won't handle ^_~ so far I've helped two BLM's get the earring with not much of a problem. Hmm... but it is a good idea to be level 65+ just so you wont get aggroed because its annoying when a goblin attacks you just before spawn time then you have to disengage and Chi Blast the NM as soon as he pops. Good Recommendation :)

I do admit that I find your guide useful, and everything I see is correct, aside from the 15 minute intervals. He just spawned at 1:06 am (just now) and someone else got the claim because I let my guard down during those times. >.<

EDIT: Nevermind, I saw what you mean. He spawns at exact 15-minute intervals from his ToD. I should have read better. My bad. ^^

RE-EDIT: After camping again, I'll reconfirm my first statement. He does NOT spawn exactly on 15 minute intervals from ToD. ToD was 1:10, spawn time was 3:18. I lost the claim once again because I expected him to appear around 3:25.

I camped this against 3 full 70+ JP pt's today with my GF trying to hopefully get a ToD. Well he spawned and I got him but no drop ;_; (0/2 now). I was pretty amazed with myself at beating out all those JP's. Before the patch theres no way I would win a claim on him against that many, I love the new patch ^_^.

oh i was sooo pi$$ed last night. at about 2:45 am i decided to giv up camping him, i went with a 67 drg amd a 62 pld, and i am 60 rdm. i know i could prolly take him solo but wasnt many ppl there so aggro would definetely pwn me. if not it would be a huge problem. well anyways like i was saying at about 2:45 am i decided to warp back to jeuno. just as the sepll hit the point of no return he popped right next to me >.< of course i wa too far to interupt and by the time i would have been able to cast something to claim he would have been claimed already. was onlt a few ppl there but one that got him was a higher lvl NIN/WAR and voke pulled it. i did have a higher lvl blm. ( i didnt really know him he was showing me the exact spots he is most likely to pop and i raised him and saved them while they were fighting LOO) if we would have waited 10 more seconds i could have claimed and had him pwn it with me. now tonight i am going back and hoping i get his sorry A$$. thaqt F&*^%$g Bast$#* >.<

The main difficulty I was having was getting the damn claim, it’s so exasperating standing there, hand on macro for 1hour+ to not be able to even fight it. I finally got the claim, claim record 1/12.
Me, lvl68whm/34smn soloed this with several links; well let’s say I had to benediction, reason being I got Mpk’ed by a link-shell camping it, called WrathOfGod’s.
There ninja trained lots of goblins and 2houred right next to me, making all the goblins link with the nm. I had the ‘Mysticmaker Profblix’ to like ½ HP. Luckily the Goblins that linked obviously give me the TP that helped me finish it. I got the Moldavite Earring, yes! 1/1. but still its taken me a good few weeks to get, doing a few hours here and there/
Btw all on Leviathan watch out for a link-shell called WrathOfGod’s. Scrappy is the Ninja that Mpk’ed me.
If your on Leviathan give me a /tell if you have anything to say about the link-shell named. Give me a /tell and ill try to respond I don’t reply its either I’m not online or your on my /blacklist

Wow, I can't believe what happened today.
I had just gotten ready to go fishing when a good friend of mine said he felt like camping a NM, so I suggested Mysticmaker. We hop on our chocos and ride out to the Labyrinth. So when we get inside I cast Sneak and Invisible so I don't get any aggro and proceed to follow my friend. We get to the spawn point and both my spells are wearing off even though we had just got there, so I cast Sneak and begin to cast Invisivle when Mysticmaker pops right next to me. I couldn't claim him because I was in mid-cast but luckily my friend is a NM Veteran. We get the claim and start whacking away, soon he dies and what did I see!!! He dropped a gobbie mask and armor, a scroll of Thundaga III and a Moldavite Earring. I couldn't believe what I had just seen. I lotted and put it on immediately and stood there stunned with what had just happened. It sounds unbelievable but after going 0/6 on this guy he finally dropped it and I hadn't been there but 2 minutes. Anyone that has camped this guy knows his drop rate sucks but keep it up and one day it will happen, I had almost lost hope but kept on trying and finally got it. I hope soon I can read another miracle story about this guy from someone else. Good Luck :)
P.S. Thanks alot Wingbuster!!! I owe you big time

Here's my awesome story:
As always, I was fishing in his spawn room today and he popped and there was no one else there except for another fisher. Normally leave him alone because I don't really need the earring.
From what I had seen in my past week of fishing there, he's camped so badly that he doesn't walk unclaimed for more than a second.

But since for some reason there was no one at that time so he was just having it easy chilling out with his brothers, so after about 10 minutes I thought to myself "why the hell not eh?"
So I ask my linkshell if a half naked 70NIN/BLM (that what I was at that time) can take him and they said I'd kill him with ease.

So I prepare myself, wait till I can pull him without linkage and start fighting him. Went pretty well till about halfway when he uses Blizzaga III on me, removing my shadows, give me a little beating till I can recast. Bit later he ***** me again with Stonega III.
At that time he had like 20% left and my HP was already in the orange. Things got ugly as he casted Blaze Spikes, making me lose 5hp per katana strike. I didn't wanna risk turning around waiting for it to wear off, I had to kill him asap because I knew that 1 more AoE spell would send me to oblivion.
Eventually I got him down to about 1% and I had only 9 HP left so I had to kill him with my next hit or I'd die. Of course 1 more hit wasn't enough, so I ate 2 blaze spikes and bit the sand.

So I was laying there dead, ******** to my linkshell. And just when I was about to hit my homepoint button 30 seconds after my death, this pops up in the chat log:

Mysticmaker Profblix falls to the ground.
You find a Moldavite Earing on Mysticmaker Profblix.

I was like WHAT THE HEll?! Appeared the poison from my katanas' addded effect got him while he was making his victory dance!

This makes my record on him 1/1

I'm sorry for all the people here who needed the earring and had a hell of a time getting it, from what I see if I read the other replies.

I find this story very hard to believe considering it is a level 50 NM, and Stonega III is 64.. Blizzaga III is what, 72? Plus your siggy says you're level 68 x.x... And if you knew you'd die, why not just cast Ninjitsu for the kill?

Unfortunately, I don't have any SS of the chat log showing his spells but I do remember that he casted them. Why do you think he drops Thundaga III?
I'm a 70 ninja, just lazy to update my sig.

Why I didn't cast Ninjutsu to finish it? I didn't have any tools except for 40 or so Shihei. I was completely unprepared for battle because I wasn't planning on any action. Had most of my inventory cleared for fishing.

you forget, Notorious monsters, and even normal obs, don't have to follow the same rules we do.

For example, he uses AM other than tornado even though he is lv50.

His level ONLY represents how much EXP he gives, nothing more, so don't worry about it

I went 1/18 on this creep. I spent like 2 1/2 weeks camping this guy and had to deal with an obvious botter, a JP Thf who tried to sell me claim (wtf?!?), ********* and people with very poor attitudes.

I also spent a bunch of time with my friends killing things, skilling up staff and meeting the ocasional camper who was cool and fun to talk to. Over all while this guy is a jerk he still isn't as bad a Novv the Whitehearted which I camped for Minstels Coat.

Was hunting Onzozo key for the map tonite ... so when I get there I do my customary Widescan and lo and behold this NM is up and unclaimed ... so I pop him and used my 2hr just to be safe. He goes down ... "You receive Gob. Mask, Gob. Armor and Thunder 3 ..." yipee. so I go finish hunting my key. I get my key 2hrs later and then just sit in this guys room waiting for repop (2-4 hrs btw) ... he pops again and I totally dont see him Manafront ... I just notice the never ending stream of spells hitting me .... not that it hurts or anything ... until Stonega 2 and Bio 2 land ... and land hard. So I pour on the damage like I can, drop him and recieve yet again Gob armor and mask ... and thats it .... stingy bish ... walked outta Onzozo with 29/1233 HP lucky me :P Either way he's very soloable as a 73Sam/36Rng ...

Got my Moldavite earring last night with my fiancé. We've been in Onzozo for him about 8 times, and had varying degrees of success trying to claim him. 1/3 on the earring with no TH - 59 BLM/WHM and me 63 RDM/BLM.

The highest amount of people I've seen waiting for him is around 22. Yes, 22 people standing in a big circle in that room. When there's that many voke-spammers and a beastmaster around, there's no point even trying so just stay for the time-of-death and come back later.

We've seen him spawn around 2 hours after ToD. Once 1 hr 50 mins, mostly over 2 hrs 15 mins. Every single time I've seen him, he's spawned right outside that little tunnel with a Cockatrice and Mushussu (or 2 Cockatrice) in it. Like others have said, 100% resistant to Stun and Silence so don't even bother wasting MP on those 2 spells. He tends to go crazy under Manafont, and I had two Tornadoes and a Freeze on me last night - Freeze being very weak and not even taking half my Stoneskin off.

Good luck all, it takes persistance but it's worth it.

Well, an ls friend needed this and another ls friend got the last claim and drop, so we headed back a little before 2 hours later.
I being only lvl50 war got worried because everything could aggro me but we got there okay, now orries.

We spread out in the normal 'ring' that he spawns in, there was alot (and I mean alot) of other campers there, like an alliance oo;

He popped, I voke claimed (Spam macro) attacked and hit hin for 70+ damage per hit with a gimped axe skill!

I was like "wow" seriously.
Either way, he never got trough an AM and the fight lasted... maybe 1 minute at most.
Dropped goblin armor, goblin helmet, burst and moldavite earring

Now to convince my LS to help me camp Eastern Shadow for my ranger ¬.¬
Horray!

So I came here with a handful of members from my (amazing!) LS after we helped another member farm Yag Necklaces for Utsu, and waited around for about an hour. The room was pretty heavily camped.. maybe about 4-5 people outside of the 4 that were with me. I didn't think we had much of a chance against voke, but amazingly, it popped in a desolate corner (by me!), I Stunned, and got it! ^_^ I was so suprised I got the claim.

Anyways, the fight was pretty easy. Things got tough when he used Freeze on our BLM68, dropped him to maybe 30 HP. But at that time, the NM was down to '| |' HP. ^^ So we got it down in time. The PT makeup was, I believe, BLM47 (myself!), BLM68, RDM60, and WHM50. We didn't have much of a problem. Oh, the drop... YES! We got the drop ^^ Or more so, I got it. Yayness.. The other campers weren't so happy, though. XD They helped me when the Cocatrices aggro'd me, and we thanked them afterwards for help.. and they just blew us off and left. >.<
