Contents [hide]

General Information

    • Respawn time on the ??? is approximately one minute after Nidhogg is defeated or despawns.

  • If continually engaged for sixty minutes after being claimed, Nidhogg will "rage", resulting in significantly increased attack power.

  • Has a draw-in effect.

  • Grants title: Nidhogg Slayer

Nidhogg Special Attacks

  • Absolute Terror: Single target Terror effect.

  • Dragon Breath: Frontal cone AoE Fire based magic damage.

    • As with all breath attacks, damage is most potent when standing directly in front of Nidhogg. Standing on either of its front feet will mitigate most, if not all, damage from Dragon Breath.

  • Horrid Roar: Single target Dispel effect.

    • Will remove all status boosts on the target.

  • Hurricane Wing: AoE magical damage with an additional Blind effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Spike Flail: Massive AoE physical damage (Circle of effect originates from mob).

    • Nidhogg will only utilize this ability if its primary target is attacking from behind

  • Unknown: Self target Attack and Defense boost (Effect cannot be dispelled).

    • Denoted by the characteristic mob two-hour animation. Additionally, Nidhogg will hold its wings up in the air during the duration of the effect.

    • Nidhogg will use this periodically, with the duration lasting roughly 30 seconds to 1 minute. There is no message in the chat log for when Nidhogg performs this action

Note: All AoE abilities will hit -everyone- in range, regardless if they are in the alliance or not.

Historical Information

Nidhogg (originally spelled Nidhoggr) was a dragon which, throughout the ages, gnawled on one of the three roots of the World Tree Yggdrasill. While gnawing at the root, he would insult the giant eagle that sat utop Yggdrasill through a squirrel named Ratatoskr, who would run messages between the two creatures daily.

It is said that Nidhogg would herald the beginning of the Ragnarok by finally managing to break through the root he chewed upon for millenia, and torment the bodies of the dead during the epic battle.

Ancient Circle

Hasn't anyone tried bringing in high-level Dragoons and having them use Ancient Circle? Sure, it doesn't last that long, but I've heard that sometimes it does gimp a wyvern/dragon's attacks 'n stuffs like that. And even if it's only by a little bit, all the "little bits" do add up, especially in a fight as hard as this.

Now, I've never BEEN in a HNM fight, but I've been in some pretty tough BCNMs so I know what it feels like when the mob just won't frikkin' die. Other than that, does Ancient Circle help?

Well, having finally beaten Kirin yesterday, and King Behemoth the day before (yeah it was a good weekend), I would have to say Nidhogg is the hardest of all the pre-CoP dragons HNMs. King Behemoth went down in roughly half an hour with honestly very little trouble. Kirin took a couple hours but honestly, once his God spawns were killed (which you can have unlimited people for since you can call for help on them), the only dangerous thing he has left is his 2 hour astral flow. Besides that, Kirin can kill anyone in one shot, but didn't really have any alliance threatening aoe attacks.

Now Nidhogg on the other hand... no matter how good a strategy you have and how experienced you are, you are at CONSTANT risk of a wipe the entire fight against him. One blm or rng gets overzealous, boom, tail spike and an almost certain wipe. Plus, he spams hurricane wing at the end, and 3 of these quickly can wipe an alliance, forcing you to go nuts and take out his last 10-15% HP in a very short amount of time (if you try to sleep him and recover, he just regens his HP). Overall, not too hard a fight once you know what you are doing, but still, IMO, a lot harder than king behemoth or Kirin.

You could beat Nidhogg in a half hour if you had a full alliance and all the rng's and blm's aggressively pushed the hate barrier on him before logging out for hate reset. He is harder than Fafnir no question, he uses Mighty Strikes which is really scary and his winf spam hits for 360-500 dmg, Faf hits for 250-400 dmg. On certain days though Faf can be a pain in the *** and if Nidhogg decides to spam hurrican wing 4 times in a minute span its trouble for everyone. You can take him down pretty quickly though without a problem. I have heard Nidhogg is harder than kirin himself ( once you beat the 4 summons lol)

judging by the posts on this forum, all of the people who support thier attempts at him with actual numbers and abilities say hes harder than all f*ck. And then theres the people who post and say "OMFGZLOL I BEAT HIM 21049720935 TIMES HE IS EZ" have nothing to show for it whatsoever..hmm i think you could safley say this guy is in the top 5 hardest HNMS.

We, on average, kill Fafnir in less than an hour. We killed Nidhogg the other day and it took a little less than an hour if I recall right. Pikko is right, with the right setup, this guy will go down pretty quick. Blm's are really great for this guy...and rng's. Just have to log out ever 2000dmg or so. One turn from this guy or Fafnir can very well end it.

At lvl 74, his Hurricane Wing did atleast 400dmg to me. Makes me want to lvl whm to 37 to sub it for Stoneskin.

He poped on my server again today lol, killed in 32mins.

He is easly in the top 5. id only put Kirin and KB above him. If you dont know what your doing of course Nidhogg will **** you up, same with Fafnir. You just have to know what to do and what not to do and its simple fights.

There are different techniques for him and you need the right jobs there. It's possible in 32 minutes.

Yes, it is definitely possible to kill this guy in 30 minutes. Someone from my LS was keeping track of the time of death for Nidhogg and he said the JP LS that claimed it killed it in roughly 30 minutes.
It was also funny because one time he reported that the JP primary tank took a critical hit from Nighogg for 168 dmg...

Not going to say what he was wearing though :)

holy hell this ******* is hard as hell

this guy took out 28 people with tail whip... ><
all i saw was so and so was defeated by Nidhogg.
so and so falls to whatever level.

haha luckly i had blink and stoneskin up..no damage taken^^...but then a spider aggroed me and i died ;;

hehe after the majority of 3 LS's died my LS all released and rushed to Nidhogg and got claim...and still did not win ;;

he has some major auto regen...flame breathe is a ***** and his wind AoE does about 200+ with stone skin...IMO much tougher then King Behemoth cuz the area u fight him in is so small

Kerlian was right in what he said. Nidhogg is much harder, mainly due to his hurricane wing doing 2-3 times the damage of fafnir's (this becomes VERY troublesome when he spams it at around 10%). In addition, his dispell move takes away ALL buffs, meaning tanks have to rebuff like mad. He is generally just a moderate amount harder in every regard, and this all added up to him being much harder, especially at the last 10-15% of his health.

Hard?
# Aug 09 2004 at 6:27 AM Rating: Decent
I dont know about Nidhogg being the hardest HNM in the game other then Kirin...The times i fough Nidhogg he was just as easy as Fafnir, nothing is really different, no extra special attacks and doesnt hit harder...really just seems he has more HP then Fafnir, but the times we killed him he didint take much longer then a Fafnir..maybe an extra 25% Health? but for sure he isnt hard if u know what your doing.

'Hardest HNM in the game other than Kirin'
Kirin gets taken out daily almost, well, I wouldn't say that, but, he's pretty much taken out a bit.
If you really, really want to look into kickass, you might want to look into Vrtra. . . In Siren I hear, only a few LS's've taken him, that includes Priceless and a few others I can't remember.. Yeah I'm from siren, rate me down if you will, I may be lv.62 but I read up a bit. and, if, theres about 4 or more people on my server with a Black Belt, (which I hear the drop off of Fafnir is rare) and Vrtra being killed by about two ls', I would say Vrtra is harder. Once again, if you're going to get angry and rate me down, do so, I don't really care. Good job on your post nonetheless, ANY HNM can be vicious if you don't know what the **** ye'r doing.

Nifelheim was the Norse underworld, and Nibelheim was the town in FF7 named after it, Cloud was from there, Zack was from Gongaga, and Sephiroth technically could very well have been born in Nibelheim too, though he most likely was not raised there.
RE: huH!
# Nov 16 2004 at 11:52 AM Rating: Decent
ok, its hard to follow, but i was an ff7 junkie... jenova was a test tube baby, and sephrioth was the son of her... (dont ask how) sephiroth was then lead to believe he was from nibelheim... cloud and zack were both clones of him, and they each had their own "lives" one from gongaga, and the other nibelheim... (dont ask me how i remember this stuff ?.?
RE: huH!
# Dec 15 2004 at 9:49 AM Rating: Decent
Wrong. Jenova was an ancient otherworldly being ALA Lavos of Chrono Trigger, that the Cetra worshipped until she betrayed them and had them killed. Gast got ahold of her, but got killed by Hojo, Hojo enjected his son Sephiroth with her cells, created clones of him, Cloud being the only failure. Zack was a normal man, not in any way a clone.
Spike Counter
# Jul 14 2004 at 8:35 AM Rating: Decent
Does Nidhogg do the spike counter, or something like it, if you pull aggro from behind like Fafnir? If so, does it do around the same damage (1000) or more?

Thanks in advance.

Actually, I've had a level 70+ explain to me how full alliance HNM battles go. Basically, one alliace goes in and fights at a time. They start dying. The second team runs in and starts fighting. Raises on the first team. First team rests up, regen's mana, sickness wears off. 2nd team starts dying. Then the 3rd team rushes in and takes over the fight.

Basically, it's that endless cycle. If you've got a Damage Dealer that does not rely on magic or resting, they can participate in the entire battle. Such as a MNK, a SAM, or DRK (to some extent). As for keeping MP up while you are fighting -- Yagudo Drinks, Bard Songs/RDM's Refresh... Stuff like that.
RE: Wow
# Oct 06 2004 at 10:29 AM Rating: Decent
Or use mp regen abilities like refresh and ballad; multiple plds, whms, and blms so some can rest while the others take over.
