Emergence of the Shadow Lord

Twenty years before the Dawn of the Age of Adventurers, a terrifying demon emerged from the frozen heights of Xarcabard. Nobody knew where this demon came from, and none of the nations were prepared for his wrath. This Kindred demon united the beastmen of Vana'diel against the five races of Altana in a war referred to nowadays as the Crystal War, or the Great War of 20 years ago.

This demon was called the Shadow Lord.

At the conclusion of the Crystal War, an elite squad of warriors fought through Castle Zvahl Baileys and cornered Shadow Lord in his throne room. There, the mighty demon was defeated... or so the world thought.

Come the Age of Adventurers, the dark spirit of the Shadow Lord began to stir once more. Motivated by this great force, the beastmen of Vana'diel set in motion a plot to revive their revered leader. Before this plot can envelop the world in a second Great War, a young adventurer joins forces with veterans of the original war to foil the sinister plot. In the end, the Shadow Lord does rise again -- but the adventurer is there waiting. An epic battle ensues. When it is over, only the adventurer is left standing.

The Shadow Lord then reveals his true identity: he is Raogrimm, the former Galka Talekeeper, consumed by the torment and pain of generations of his people.

In this final defeat, the Shadow Lord believes he can rest peacefully.

SPOILERS: Origins of the Shadow Lord

A decade before the Crystal War, the three nations of Vana'diel launch an expedition to the frozinvestigate a lost civilations . The expedition included Ulrich, a powerful Hume swordsman; his friend, Raogrimm, the Galkan Talekeeper, keeper of the race's memories; and Cornelia, a beautiful Hume female warrior.

The expedition through the northlands was going as planned until a rift began forming between Ulrich and Raogrimm. The Galka was advocating peace with the beastmen, a thought Ulrich didn't agree with. Also, Raogrimm had proven to be the better warrior of the two, despite Ulrich's prowess with his blade. Then there was Cornelia; the Hume female and the Galka had developed a secret affection for one another, and Ulrich was green with envy.

The day finally came when Ulrich could no longer control his jealosy. The Hume surprised Raogrimm, pulling his sword and moving to kill him. Cornelia, faithful to the end, stepped in front of Ulrich's blade -- and he ran her through. Raogrimm took her dead body in his arms, and then Ulrich killed him, too.

Ulrich hid the truth of what happened when he returned home from his expedition. However, the rage and saddness of the betrayal resonated through the world, and into the memory of the magicite crystals.

Thirty years after the fact, as you find pieces of magacite crystals hidden throughout Vana'diel, you catch the first glimpses of the horrid betrayal, the event which ignited Raogrimm's hatred and allowed him to ressurect himself as the Shadow Lord.

Hmmm... The information here doesn't elaborate very well on how the fight goes, and some of it is actually wrong... So I'll give a little more information.

I'll try to make it as clear as I can, but it's a little hard to explain... When you kill this guy for the first time, until you get it down to 25% of it's life it will be completely immune to Magic Attacks, and weak to physical. So for the first 75% of its life the only way to deal damage is from physical attacks. So, you'll have to have some sort of damage dealer. You don't need many of them; even one is fine, because anyone can melee and add damage in.

Then, once it gets to 25% of its life it becomes completely immune to physical attacks (meaning you do 0 every physical hit, even Sidewinder and other weapon skills do 0), and weak to Magic Attacks. This is the most important part, you MUST have at least 2 RDM's or a BLM in the party to be safe. All physical attacks do 0 damage, so the only way to kill it from that point on is from Magic.

In total I would say it has about 10,000 HP, I could be off, but it's around there.

Once you kill it the first time, you get a little cut-scene, and it transforms into this uber-version that does only AOE attacks. And, you can not avoid it. No matter where you are in the room, you will be hit by it. In this form it has about 4000 HP, so mainly you have to just kill it as fast as you can. It just does this same AOE attack non-stop for a good 100-300 damage each time every 5 or so seconds... So in this last part you have to throw whatever you have left.

That's about it, hope it helps :D... Good luck!

Somebody once told me that if you cast Ancient magic on him when he's in his second form, he becomes vulnerable to physical damage again. I don't know this for sure, I'm just repeating what I heard, but I'll have our BLM try it when I go to take him on one of these days...

I don't know of any parties that bother with ancient magic during his phsyical-immune form. He doesn't have that many HP left at that point and simply chaincasting level III spells is sufficient to down him.

Maybe Ancient Magic gets cast during his AOE only form, but you will get hit 3-4 times before the spell fires, increasing the odds of interrupted casting. In other words, save your ancient magic for when you use Manafont at the very end.

Yes, you're right, I didn't understand much about the fight until I beat him yesterday. Ancient magic was, indeed, useless.

His second form is annoying. My party had a RDM/BRD/WHM(me) for the mages and it was a pain getting his HP down when he became immune to physical damage. Having a BLM or DRK at this point of the fight would have really, REALLY helped out. Managing MP here is the most important part of the fight (since you're spamming Curaga in the last stretch), which is why I ate a Rolanberry Pie instead of roast mushrooms at the start of the fight and had 2 yagudo drinks with me.

Food makes all the difference in the world.
Demon Killer?

Does the Samurai ability "Demon Killer" apply to this guy, causing paralysis?
RE: Demon Killer?
# Jun 21 2004 at 5:26 AM Rating: Decent
Yes it does. I tanked him as a 61 samurai and he got intimidated a few times. Fought him a second time and warding circle also paralyzed him a round or 2 when a paladin tanked him.
