Historical Information

In Hindu mythology, Garuda was a lesser deity that often served as the mount for the god Vishnu. He was said to have a golden body, a white face, crimson wings, and the beak of an eagle, while the rest of his body was human. He was said to be so large that his body and wingspan could block out the sun when he flew by.

He came into the service of the gods after his mother Vinata, the sister of the serpent mother Kadru, lost a foolish bet and became enslaved by her sister. Garuda approached the serpents seeking to free his mother of her enslavement, and managed to make a deal with them that his mother could go free if he were able to obtain the Amrita (see item Amrita), the elixir of immortality in the possession of the gods, for them.

The gods held the Amrita in what they felt was an impenetrable defense, as they had it ringed by an eternal flame that covered the sky, guarded by a machine of some design with sharp, rotating blades, and two gargantuan serpents. Garuda, undeterred by these barriers, doused the flames by diverting the waters of the nearby rivers into them, shrank himself down to pass by the blades of the machine, and eviscerated the serpents before taking the Amrita and turning back for home.

Before he reached Kadru and the serpents, Garuda was confronted by the god Vishnu, who promised him the gift of immortality if he became his mount, to which the bird deity agreed. Later en route, Garuda was confronted by the sky god Indra (see Indra Katars), where he promised that he'd promise to get the Amrita back to the gods after fulfilling his bargain with the serpents, in exchange for Indra allowing Garuda to feed upon the serpents.

Finally reaching the snakes, he places the Amrita on the ground, thus absolving his mother of her slavery, but suggests to them that they should perform their rituals before drinking from it, which they readily left to do. As they departed, Indra swooped down and reclaimed the Amrita, thus allowing Garuda to complete his end of their agreement.

Garuda now forever serves as Vishnu's mount and the eternal enemy to the serpents, which he preys on every day.

Duo'ed this with me (WHM74/NIN37) and my friend (WHM75/NIN37).. Was a piece of cake. Kept Paralyze on her which worked well (being ice based) and Dia 2. The only annoying this was that she kept healing but we got her down to nothing in the end. Took 23 Mins or something and we didnt use any food.. If you are going to do it, best take a yag drink or two to be completely safe - We had about 100MP each left at the end of the fight.

I beat her. She was easy. Just somehow carbuncle always dies right when I get past the bend going down after 1st AF/SL. But I managed to recast him a little bit downward after popping open a cold ether (hi-ether not recommand for primes). Then I let carbby run up to Garuda and went next, #2 AF/SL. Then rand up half way up after bend carbby died. Another cold ether. Then she kept attacking me and not carbby so I had to use like 2 hi-potions then #3 AF/SL boom dead. Fought on Firesday. And I also used Boiled crab and hold the new record on Odin with 3 minutes and 33 seconds :D.

Check my link below to see the equipment I used. The courage ring +1 is for ifrit. I just kept it on for no reason.

Duoed all avys as 64DRG/32WHM with my friend Gance (75RDM/NIN) except Shiva (someone else needed her too, so we had a 67?THF/33NIN). Beat all avys no problem duo, except for Shiva. First time on her we were sticking it to her good, but then my friend D/Ced >.< So far duoing them all has been a blast, and I am almost ready to get my purple doggie :) Oh, another side note, I did NOT have to wait 24 RL hours to get a new fork... Turned in a fork last night at about 11PM June 12, and got a new one for the same avy about 10 minutes ago (3PM June 13), so it must reset when the servers reset at midnight in Japan.

Ok, getting to the Cloister of Gales is a pain. No matter what you do, bring your own Sneak and Invis because with all those damn raptors, goblins, cockatrices and manticores strolling about, not having it yourself is just a mean thing to do to the mages.

Once you're safely ensconsed at the Cloister though, the fight is an absolute blast. I went in with the following set up:

65 NIN/WAR
65 SAM/WAR
66 DRK/WAR
70 WHM/BLM

The first time we fought Garuda, well it wasn't pretty. Through a series of slight mistakes, we all ended up dying. But the last man standing was the WHM and we had Garuda down to about 1% before she took him out too. The biggest mistake was probably that we didn't have any items in preparation for the fight. We hadn't read up on it at all. We just kinda charged in, swords raised, shouting a battle cry.

What really screwed us up was the DRK dying to Aerial Blast. We can't figure out how this could have happened since we ALL had Baraera up, and the remaining three of us only got hit for like 160 each. The DRK took like 1600 dmg and died. ; ;

So for the second go, I went back and grabbed us some au laits and some yagudo drinks. Garuda's Whispering Wind move is the biggest pain in the rear. She can recover over 1000 HP with that move. The other thing that I didn't know (having only fought one Prime fight before this and not having researched first) is that Fragmentation actually cured her! I should have known that since it is Thunder/Wind, but I spaced it in trying to form a sc with the DRK and my most powerful weaponskills. >.<

The fight was challenging and really really fun. Without a SMN or a RDM, things got pretty sticky sometimes, but that made winning all the more sweet. I also think part of the fun came from not really knowing what to expect.

I don't really recommend going in with our same set up and expecting to win. The four of us are LS members and we've played together a lot so we know each other's strengths and skills. Also, three of us know each other IRL and were sitting in the same room, so that helped out considerably with communicating.

EASIEST FIGHT!

Setup:
73 Brd
73 Rdm
75 Sam
66 Nin
75 Whm
65 Blm(me ^^)

We went in there, bard Carold us, and we also got baraera for like 129 resistance to wind, so we got her to half health and she 2 hr'd, which did a maximum of 200 dmg to me, the lowest level!

We owned her and set the record at 5 mins exactly. ^^

I think I will solo them all on lv 75 :-) This fight r fun... I kind of enjoyed them very much. They r easy, batelfield is nice, music is good... why not to go there more often :-)
We did all the avatars without full pty (except Fenrir). Even on the lv 51 u can still be usefull to the pty (blink, stoneskin) but u have to renember to stay a way from 2h. Now I can say that the time for whispers and Fenrir fight is 50+. U can even do some dmg with Shiva :-).
So all of u who cant wait to get Fenrir and r smn main... get your lv 50 and get to work :-)
/sigh

first of all mini fight just use www.summoner.info for stragity works like a charm... used it broke record for every mini i did except for levi (had to cheat and kill him with dia sence he always resisted 1 of my searing lights)

for the prime fight.... way easer than mini + its a joke... fought her, shiva, and levi last night prime with a jp 75war/37nin and he would never pull to the right spot so i got stuck in aeral blast range.... im was a 63whm/31smn keep baraero and stone skin up.... used aeral blast.... took 6 points of damage... just figued i'd put my 2 cenets in

Party consisted of:

SMN55/WHM27 (me)
WHM39/SMN19 (leech/backup heal)
NIN75/WAR37
BLM63/RDM31
RDM60/WHM30
BLM60/WHM30

All started off good until she got to half HP(imagine that...). When Garuda was getting close to half, I starting telling the mages to get as far away as they could, of course, only one person listens to me. Our NIN and 2 others died from the 2-hour, so the hate went to Shiva, I raised the NIN, but ran out of MP so Garuda started after the BLM's. WHM cured the NIN, I started resting when she was going after our mages who were all running like mad. So our mages died, except for the WHM and I, NIN got hate again while WHM cured. Started resting and kne that the WHM couldnt keep up the healing forever, decided to 2-hour with Diamond Dust. I get my 120MP and cast Shiva, 2-houred, use BP, but at the same time Garuda used Whispering Wind. Luckily Dust did more dmg than it usually does(normal dmg for me is around 850 max). Dust did 936dmg while Whispering Wind only healed 732. I started resting for next BP, and NIN got hate again. Second BP, Garuda used hastega instead of Wind(w00t!). 852 dmg for the kill.

garuda own our pty >.< pt setup was

pld/war 62
whm/blm 62
drg/war 61
rdm/whm 63 (me)
smn/whm 58
war/nin 58

everything go find until garuda have half hp then she 2hrs on us and kill me 1200dmg with stoneskin up and the smn at same time smn use 2hrs with shiva but was die before use it >.<.

The whm take only 161 dmg (hidden AF effect), and try to keep tank alive but we run out of mp and finally we all die ^^ was a first try to a prime avatar and was really funny fight.

we all bring yagudo juice and hi ether for mage and x potion for melee.

The pb was i don't go enough far when i convert divine seal cure4 and get hate so garuda 2hrs do dmg to mage >.>

we will try it again when tank hit 65, was really a funny fight :)

ps: it's garuda prime not the mini battle with lvl 20 smn, don't understand why half of the topic speack about mini battle =P

Rabao fame is linked to San'd Oria fame. I do believe for the primes you need 7 fame; could be mistaken though on the fame level.

Okay, there's no doubt about it... these fights are UNBELIEVABLY annoying. Don't worry though you WILL eventually get throught them, and the reward is worth the effort =)

Okay so after getting my butt kicked numerous times when I first started out, I've developped what has become an almost 100% successful method for these battles.

Now it costs a lot (depending on your server, for me this method can cost from 15k to 22k PER fight on Asura).
Here's what you need:

Potion X 5
Hi-Potion X 2
Ether X 5
Yagudo Drink X 3
Selbina Milk X 12 (just a clump of em will last for a loong time, and they're cheap too, only about 200G for 12)

Okay so very simple strategy. Get your hand on a Hermit's Wand and ANY other equipment that lowers spell interuption rates (like Heko Obi +1 for example), the rest of your equipment try to find things that raise your EVAsion stats, otherwise anything with the highest defense.

Now, when you enter the battlefield IMMEDIATELY cast Protect and Aquaveil (if using a SMN/WHM, I haven't tried any other combo), or you can try to get a Protect II or III from some nice player before entering the battle. Now having macros set for these fights helps a lot (I will post my macro list right after this).

Run up the ramp until you can see the avatar in the distance and cast Carbuncle right away. Use a Yagudo Drink RIGHT AWAY after summoning (it restores MP).

Use assault of the avatar where you summoned Carby (MAKE SURE that the avatar if busy with Carbuncle before moving) now run to the top and hide beside the crystal. Try to run far enough away so you no longer target the avatar and you can no longer see Carbuncle's health, only his name, you know then you are at a safe distance.
Now that you have a chance, use the Selbina Milk (it gradually restores HP). Be very alert during these battles, and restore anything that wears off if you feel you are safe to do so.

After a minute or so Carbuncle will be defeated by the avatar. DO NOT PANIC, this will happen MANY times during the fight, so get used to it. When you see Carbuncles name dissapear from the bottom of the screen summon him again RIGHT AWAY, DO NOT WASTE TIME. Once he pops out again, mash the Assault macro, and once the avatar has targeted Carby again, run back to the place you summoned Carby for the first time (a lot of people say to run back down to where you enetered the battlefield, personally I found this a waste of time, and it actually caused me MORE difficulty, so just do what you feel comfortable with).

Keep letting Carby get wooped until you either:

A) Have the avatar's health down to about 3/4's
OR
B) Have less that 70 MP remaining.

Now's when you break out the 2-Hour.
Once Carbuncle has been freshly summoned, let the avatar come close to you and use Astral Flow, it WILL come after you, but don't worry. Now hit the Searing Light macro, and WAIT until Carby hit it before running away, otherwise you'll completely miss the target. This is EXTREMELY important!!! USE at LEAST 2 or 3 ethers IMMEDIATELY!!! Otherwise Carbuncle will dissapear due to lack of MP, and you will most likely DIE! After using the Ethers run to a safe spot (as mentioned before by viewing only Carby's name nd the bottom) and use potions as needed (Hi-potions if in the yellow and regular potions if you are below 75%HP).

Make sure you have at least 40MP remaining and continue the "Carby dies, you re-summon" method until you can re-use Searing Light. Follow the same directons as before, stay CLOSE to the avatar and wait for Carby to use it.

Using this method, the second Searing Light should do the avatar in. If for some reason it doesn't, then follow the same directions as before, and pray you have enough time to get another Searing Light in before the 2-Hour wears off.

And there you have it! This method has worked for me 90% of the time. Why 90%? Because I once continued hitting the wrong macro thinking there was some glitch with the game rather than using Searing Light, which lead my 2-hour to expire and Shiva to kick my bum. Other than that extremely stupid mishap, I've won every other time.

Don't worry you CAN do it! It just takes practice, it's very rare that anyone can get an avatar on their first try. Good luck!
lv20 fight

i beat her a week ago - and it was damn close!

i'd already beat shiva, titan and ifrit, and i had heard Garuda was one of the easy ones, so i went into the fight really expecting to kick her ***,however....

i took along:
- 2 hi-potion
- 2 ether
- 2 yag drinks
- 1 hi-ether(for emergancies, as there was no more ethers in ANY of the AH's)

i went into the fight, just using the method from the summoner.info website, and everything went fine til near the end, i only had to fire off the final Searing Light to kill her, and i had assumed that she had already used her 2hr while i was running away. i got carby to use his last Searing Light, but she aint dead - no problem, carby can just beat the crap out of her, but then she started to glow. it was her 2hr - and he hit me and carby with it - killing carby, and putting me down to red health and with no MP, as my yag drink had just wore out.i quickly healed up a bit with my hi-potions, all while she's stadning there beating the hell out of me, and try to use my hi-ether(as it was all i had left) but cant because she keeps interupting it! so i just stood there watching my health go down while having no MP. finally i manage to take the hi-ether, but by thisd point i have no potions, and my HP is getting dangerously low. knowing that there was very little chance of being able to summon carby, i decided to fight her with my stick, and fired off a couple of Banishes - however my devine magic skill is sitting a horribly low lv of 10, so it wasnt dealing much damage. starting to panic, i look at my HP, and see that it is now at 14 - one hit will kill me, but she seems to have stopped attacking, and so have i...then it hits me! i've beat her!

:D
