General Information

    • There are two that spawn in this area, but the one that alternates pop locations (can spawn inside or outside of the room) is the placeholder mob. Despite its placeholder's spawn pattern, Charybdis will always spawn inside the room.

  • Respawn time is approximately 8 hours after its last Time of Death.

  • Immune to Sleep. Susceptible to Stun, Slow, Bind, Blind, and Paralysis. Susceptible to Gravity, but builds a resistance over time.

  • Is capable of attacking multiple times per attack round.

Charybdis Special Attacks

  • Hard Membrane: Self target Evasion boost. (Effect can be dispelled).

  • Tentacle: Single target physical attack.

  • Ink Jet: Frontal cone AoE magic damage with additional Blind effect.

  • Cross Attack: Single target two-hit physical attack.

  • Whirlwind: AoE Wind based magic damage with an additional Vitality down effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Maelstrom: AoE Water based magic damage with additional an Strength down effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Regeneration: Self target Regen effect. (Effect can be dispelled).

Historical Information

In Greek mythology, Charybdis is a sea monster that is said to take the form of a gargantuan mouth that sucks in and spits out enormous volumes of water three times a day. The daughter of the ocean god Poseidon and earth goddess Gaia, she was originally a naiad until she stole the cattle of Geryon from Heracles, which angered Zeus and caused him to transform her into a monster.

She resided along the side of a strait of water within an arrow shot's distance of Scylla, another sea monster that took on the form of a creature with six vicious dog-heads atop incredibly long necks. Ships passing through the strait would have to decide between passing close to Scylla's domain to avoid Charybdis, or vice versa. They would almost always choose the Scylla side, as while passing by Scylla would ensure that some of the crew would be killed, passing near Charybdis could result in the destruction of the entire ship.

It is believed that this myth is the origin of the phrase, "Between a rock and a hard place", referring to being forced to make a choice where both options are difficult.

Lot of people saying different things here... I just got sword today.

When he spawned there were two PH spawning in the room. 2 were spawning there since I started camping it so i never experienced it with just one being there. Sometimes it seemed like one of the PH would spawn just outside the door instead of inside the room (couldn't be sure if it was the PH or just a third spawn spot).
It poped about 15 hours after it's last death,

12 lvl 75 alliance with ninja tank no problem at all.

PHs are easily soloable by 70+ RDM Sleep > Nuking > Sleep

I can garauntee that it is not a 21-24 hour spawn. My ls went with and we killed these from the 21st to the 24th hour. Had to pop earlier.

I got the time of death from my HNMLS the other day, and went to start camping this 15 minutes before its window started (21 hours after death) I stayed there killing mantas for 6 hours and it never popped. wth? There was only 1 manta there when I first got there, then after that, two of them started respawning. I kept killing them both for 6 hours, and about 4 hours in one of them stopped respawning. 15 hours later, now, there is still only 1 respawning. WTF happened? Why didn't it spawn? Is it possible someone killed it before I got there (which would mean its spawn isn't 21-24 but more like 18-24)?
What If...

What if when you arrive, there are 2 devil mantas, and then after you kill both of them, only 1 manta is respawning. What does this mean. Not ready for spawn? Ready? Since you say if theres 2 then its ready, I'm trying to figure out whats going on.

Well i THOUGHT i was right, cause everytime i camped him for myself this proved true. There would be 2 mobs in the room when i got there, me and my rdm friend would pull and duo one, then kill the other, eventually spawning Charybdis.

However, when i tried helping out some friends, it didn't quite work out this way, so i'm guessing either the pld i helped didn't really get Time Of Death like he said, OR my theory is flawed.

Either way, i ended up with joyeuse going my theory, so its the only thing i know to tell you.

I've camped this thing more than i care to mention, for friends but mainly myself ^^;

The spawn time is 21-24 hours, don't let anyone tell you different. Also you know that window is open when there are 2, count em, 2 mobs in the room. If you are there from the 1-21:59 mark, like i've been, there will just be 1 mob. Also, these 2 mobs are divided easy spawn/hard spawn. Chary mostly pops in the hard spawn spot. I've only seen him pop here but just to cover myself he MIGHT spawn in the easy spot, i'm not sure.

Also, unless you wanna bring a **** ton of people, you NEED, absolutely NEEEEEED a 70+(preferably 74-75) NIN/WAR tank. Some say thf/nin works too but i've never done it that way so i can't say. I went with an alliance of 12 with pld tank, didn't work out at all, we all died within like 5min of spawn.

I got my joyeuse last night *squee ^^* with this set up:
74 NIN/WAR
74 RDM/WHM
73 RDM/BLM
67 RNG/NIN
67 BRD/WHM

It took awhile, but we did it just fine.

Hope this helps any aspiring Joyeuse owners. Good Luck! ^^

his spawn time is not 21-24 hours, killed it one night while camping for many hours and a BST in LS said its up again, that was about 12 hours after we killed it last.

Yes, it is 21-24 hours.

However, we've killed him every night for the past week getting Joyeuse for everyone that wants it in Foodmonsters.

His window is open when there is 1 and only 1 Devil Manta. He spawns in place of the second one in his own time between the 3 hour window. You can kill the stray if you want to prevent aggro mid-fight, but killing it won't do you any good if you're trying to pop it. Each night for the past week he's just popped on his own without any prompting or killing.

And if you're a Bard you don't stick both Mambos on -- you put Dragonfoe Mambo and Water Carol on. Water Carol + Barwatera usually knocks down his AoE attacks to around 80-100, which is a LOT more manageable.

Russ it right. He got his sword yesterday, I got mine today 21-24 hour spawn, window open with only 1 manta. This was the 3rd day in a row we got it with Lyana, one of our other RDM getting the sword the first day. We killed it with as little as 10 ppl fairly easily, but Russ's bard info works much better with the AOE than using double mambo. Good job Russ! BTW, this sword ROCKS for RDM when paired up with /NIN and hornetneedle and haste. Holy fast hitting hell (for RDM at least). Try it sometime.

Hate to break it to ya, but it's a 9-12 hr spawn, not 21-24. For a while, both my ls and a group of TW or JP traded off his spawn times. We'd kill it when it was convenient for us, they'd be there watching, and kill it 9-12 hrs later when it was convenient for them and they were all awake. 9-12 hours later, we'd kill it again, and so on and so on.

If you don't have a lot of ppl to help, and do not have NIN or THF tanks, you can still kill this by kiting it in that small room.

Very easy kill. Killed this with about 12 ppl, (i was the only tank, PLD). Bottomline is, if you're using PLD for tanks, just kite it... PLD tanking this straight up is just a waste of WHM MP.

i can CONFIRM that his spawn window is NOT only 21-24hours, I got his exact Time of Death and started killing placeholders time and time again from 12-24hours

He popped exactly at the 18th hour

12-24 seems like a more accurate window..

Magil's post on location and spawn time is correct ^^

Has moderate evasion and high natural defense. Random multiple-attack. Has some abilities to temporarily increase defense and regenerate. Has an AOE that'll do ~200-300 damage and gives some -dex and -vit. Uses 2hr of Hundred Fists, and will put your tank in a world of hurt (instead of nomral ~100 dmg hits to a 75pld, can drop him dead in <5 seconds). Other than that, not a very eventful opponent, compared to other HNMs. Dunno if you'd actually define this as HNM however, as his HP is relatively low (by comparison) and doesn't give a title when killed. Fun to beat up though ^^

Drop is 25000gil divided by however many people in your PT/alliance and the sword.
Level is probably more like 75, based on EXP received and working backwards through exp tables. The sword does look insanely cool.

One thing. I never saw it do a "two-hour" animation like most mobs do whenever they use an ability such as Hundred Fists (you know, huge swirling dust). However, it CAN attack up to 8 times per round, and so averages about 3-4. I highly suggest a Ninja with uber high evasion and possibly a backup Ninja for tanking. Its Ink Jet also can seemingly Blind a target for hours if Blindna is not applied. Other than that, typical Manta-type mob attacks as described in the above post, although I think one gives -STR and not -DEX. Not completely sure on that however.

His drop of Joyeuse is 100%, and he also has a decent chance of dropping Oxblood.

If you're looking for an EVA tank, you should have a THF75 tanking it, not a NIN.

Spawns at (G-11), past the gold door deep in the grotto. There is a room with two Devil Mantra pops there, his lottery begins every 21-24 hours from those pops. The NPC Sahagin Bou the Righteous is in the room, with lots of treasure. Also, it helps to kill the Devil Mantra right outside, apparently.

"his lottery begins every 21-24 hours from those pops"

i'm confused at this

you kill the manta's , then it takes 21-24 hours for it to lottery pop?

No, I mean, after he is killed, he cannot pop again for 21-24 hours. When he does pop, it will be from a "lottery" with the two Devil Mantas there (and thus will randomly pop instead of one of them).

As a warning to those who feel that this monster is just a normal level 70 monster ...

He has a Kraken-Club like hit (appropriate for the sword he drops) that hits 4-5 times per blow. This really hurts blink tanking him, though I've seen a Ninja do it with a Bard singing both Mambos. Just a warning as to what to expect. He's a hard fight.

I took him with a 2 party alliance of 70's, though I think that now that I'm more familiar with him, I could probably do it with 8 or so players.

For those of you that like the lore behind items and monsters:

Charybdis is a sea monster from Greek Mythology that would take in and put out water several times a day resulting in a whirlpool. There was a straight that contained Charybdis and a 6-headed monster named Scylla. There was only a small chance for the sailors to make it successfully through the straight so would often sacrifice 6 men to Scylla rather than having the chance of Charydbis destroying their ship. On Odysseus' journey (The Odyssee) he was able to escape both.

lol, and because I'm finally lvlin' rdm and I want this, I look at the posts.

Yeah, Scylla did yoink 6 of his men!

And to add my 2 cents...

The saying, "stuck between a rock and a hard place" comes from this.
