Historical Information

In Norse mythology, Fenris (originally spelled Fenrisulfr) was the eldest offspring of the prankster god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. His siblings were the dragon monster Jormungandr (see Jormungand) and Hel, the future ruler of the underworld that would bear the same name.

Despite that his siblings were cast from Asgard, Fenris was spared from a similar fate due to Odin's (see Odin) affinity towards wolves, though due to his rapid growth and increasingly fierce nature, the gods feared him and dared not approach him, save for one. The god of war Tyr, unafraid of the monstrous hound, offered to feed him daily, thus forging an uneasy peace between him and Fenris.

However, even due to this truce, the gods determined that Fenris needed to be bound, so Odin ordered dwarven forgers to create an iron chain, known as Loedingr, though as soon as it was wrapped around Fenris, his strength allowed him to snap the bonds with ease. A second chain, known as Dromi, which possessed twice the tensile strength of Loedingr, was created to bind the wolf again, though, like Loedingr, Dromi was broken just as easily.

The dwarves then made a fine ribbon known as Gleipnir, fashioned from the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish, the spittle of a bird, and the sound of a cat's footstep, and was brought before Fenris so that he could be bound by it again. Sensing some level of deception in being confronted with what appeared to be such a fragile material, Fenris demanded that he would only allow himself to be bound by Gleipnir if one of the gods would place his/her hand in its mouth, so that if the gods did not release him from Gleipnir as they had promised, he would bite off that hand. Knowing that there was no intention for Fenris to be released, the gods were wary of accepting Fenris's demands, until Tyr stepped forward and offered his right hand to the beast. After Fenris realized that he was not going to be released, he soundly clamped down and removed Tyr's hand, then was bound to the great rock Gjoll on the island Lyngvi.

At the time of the Ragnarok (see Ragnarok), Fenris would finally grow powerful enough to shatter Gleipnir and join Jormungandr, Hel, and giants against the battle with the gods, where Fenris would devour Odin. As an act of vengeance, Vidar, one of Odin's sons, killed the monstrous wolf by placing his foot on its lower jaw, then pulled upward on its upper jaw until Fenris was torn in half.

So, if you die during this fight and dont HP and just watch the rest of it...and the rest of your party defeats him...THEN wait till everyone watches the cutscene (and after u watch it if u can cause u dead) then what happens? Do u transport outside crystal as a dead body get raise then even though u died u can still go back and get a reward?

If you have a pack of SMN that're 65+ take on this guy, he'll USUALLY be easy, depending on what day you fight him on and what summons they use. (best chance is to have them all be high enough to have Garuda have Predator Claw and fight Fenrir on Windsday so Garuda=stronger, or on Lightsday so Fenrir=weaker. Note the moons position, too..)
ghetto whm's chance?

Yes, unfortunately you need to beat the level "60+" Avatar battles in order to be able to start the fight with Fenrir, you need the 6 key items from each main avatar and then I think you trade them in to someone to gwet a Ley Item: Moon Bauble. Then you can go to Full Moon Fountain and get to the place to fight Fenrir. (I also think you need a special item to enter Full moon Fountain from the Canal.)

My question is: If you do the lvl20 trials to get the avatars, will they be weaker than the avatars (same) from the lvl60+ trials? And are the lvl60+ trials (all of them) mandatory to fight Fenrir Prime?

no, absolutly not. I tried this with all 75 pty ~ 2 75 SMN's 1 75 WHM 1 75 NIN and 1 75 BLM and still got our *** kicked 12 times b4 we won. you def. need all 6 ppl in this fight, 5½ wont cut it.

The avatars from the lv. 60+ battles are at full strength. The avatars for the lv. 20 battles are restricted to lv. 20, as are you. But these lv. 20 avatars are still strong so take some good potions with ya.
RE: Any difference?
# Oct 24 2004 at 9:24 PM Rating: Decent
Actually, that's incorrect. If you inspect them closely in their range of abilities, they are actually lowered to level 30, and you to 20.

Apparently, Square Enix likes to mess with us, because they're still beatable. I've yet to beat Ramuh and Leviathan (Ramuh keeps Thundersparking me). Ever since they fixed the problem with gimped range in abilities, Ramuh is being impossible to defeat (for me).

Anyways, you can enter each protocrystal only once per 24 hours (unless you know the little trick). Once you get all of the whispers and a pretty high fame rating in Windurst, talk to Leepe-Hoppe to initiate the quest, and go from there. Then, just follow the clues they lay out for you to follow. Congrats, you just found yourself in Full Moon Fountain with an angry Fenrir growling at you. I hope you brought a decent party along ;)

So, from what I have read, you have to unlock the Summoner job, and either be lvl 20 SMN, or lvl 60+ in another job, to atain the ABILITY to summon Fenrir.

Why do you need to be 60+ in another job? Could you tag along with a LS group going to do the avatar battle at lvl 40, and still get the ABILITY to summon, as long as you have the SMN job unlocked?

I understand you will not really do any damage or anything in the battle.

Sort of right, sort of not...

Avatars besides Fenrir:
In order to do the lev 20 mini-trial quests which will let you obtain all of the other avatars besides Fenrir, you must be lev 20+ Summoner (note: this does not include the elemental summons which are level 1 - but you need to get the scrolls for these). In these quests, you will mainly be using Astral Flow (the 2 hr) and Carbuncle's special attack Searing Light to take down the avatar. Each of these mini-trial fights has a lev 20 cap, and you will want to bring along the right equipment, food/drinks, etc.

For these avatars that you can get in the lev 20 Summoner cap mini-trial fights, you can alternatively fight them (and unlock them for your summoner job) with a 6 person pt of lev 60+ as any job.

Fenrir:
Once you (or somebody in your PT) have all of the summons and can get the key item for the Fenrir battle, go as a lev 60+ pt (your job doesn't matter - but some say 70+ pt for this one) and kill Fenrir Prime. Then you can get Fenrir as a summon regardless of your level as a summoner (you may have to keep the whisper instead of selecting a prize to get him as a summon).

I'm not a summoner but I'm getting ready for it and have read up. Please correct me if I'm wrong on anything.

Actually, I think it's EVERYONE who wants to enter the battlefield needs the key item (that's the way it was with the other avatars, we waited for 20 minutes for our whm to get the Earth Fork and get back to the cloister). So you'd all have to have fought the primes and kept your whispers instead of turning them in. Also, from what friends have said, you REALLY need to be at least 70 for this fight ... 75 is preferred, but I know a pt who's 11/12 with Fenrir that took a level 50 and won ... my bf is trying to hook me up now. :]

Heya every1. jus a poor lil whm (Carinen) puting in my 2 cents.. i jus did the shiva fight and we are gonna plan to do more so i can get fenrir. he rocks. we had myself lvl 56, drg and mnk lvl 74-74, pld 67, blm 66, and rdm 67, the fight ended before i knew what was happening. no one used their 2 hours, and i DC'd during the fight. we are getting all the avatars so i can tag along and get fenrir. from what i heard a grp of lvl 75's can take fenrir no prob.. and from another smn. i heard that a grp of all smn's can take fenrir by themselves ranging from lvl 60-75
RE: fenrir anyone
# Oct 07 2004 at 1:58 PM Rating: Decent
a group of 75's actually do have a problem if they are burdened by a 6th member less than 70. Fenrir has a nice attack that can do easily up to 2k damage [ DO NOT fight him on full moon, or darksday; full moon being suicidal ] - so utsusemi is your best friend during this fight. If you go in with other summoners who are at least 70 - then you can say this battle isn't that bad :), but the odds are winning are still up in the air. These avatar fights are usually based on the 2 hour during the middle of the fight ; since the other primes are lvl 65 you take it for granted, but Fenrir can open a can of whoop *** [ lvl 80 ]

about those comments on July 6th, yes i was correct, the summoned creatures look exactly like the Prime versions of themselves but are smaller, and weaker. This is gained from the knowledge of having gotten all avatars except Fenrir in the level 20 battles.
Strategy!!
# Jul 21 2004 at 1:08 AM Rating: Decent
Fought fenrir two nights ago and IMO it was much much easier than people think. Party formation: pld/nin/rdm/whm/drk/blm all level 75. Paladin and ninja switch hate back and forth, white mage and red mage cure, drk wacks away, blm helps heal for the first half of the fight... Fenrir uses Moonlight Charge (1/2 HP) does about 900 damage usually (make sure pld's hp is high enough). After fenrir uses his 2-hour battle is pretty much over with. The only group members that matter after his 2-hour are blm and pld. ASAP after 2-hour pld uses Invincible and blm uses Manafont. BLM nukes like crazy until Fenrir is dead and shouldn't get any hate because of invincible. Our party beat the record doing this 2 nights ago and we spent the first minute of the fight talking (although i didn't know what they were saying because I don't speak japanese) :p. This works very very well if anyone is looking to fight him. Good luck!
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 15 2004 at 3:22 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) im confused as hell as how all the members of your party are lv75 if your highest lv is 72 :p

I wanna become a SMN and i was wondering if i could actually get a party with me to go beat him. I no i have to get the other avatars first, but i was wondering how many level 70-75 guys i would need to go in here safely and get fenrir killed? I don't care if i leave successfully cause i wouldn't care about getting deleveled or anything. Can anyone comment on this?

You need a full team of lv 70-75, even then its hard to do. If you can manage to get 4 70+ smn they can kill it but then you need a 70+ whm casue they wont do it wihtout raise 3.

fenrir is now my best friend. i was in a party last night (awsome party) and we had a smn in it. he had ALL the summons including fenrir. now fenrir has the best abilities in the game and if the stats it added were put on a single piece of armor it would cost over 50 million. i saw him use 2 different abilities. one was where it gave LOTS of evasion and accuracy. then the next one is the best eva. what it did was INCREASE all of your stats, and depending on your job, it will add more to the stats that are more important to your job. so i am a thf, it gave me abbout 8 dex, 8 agl, 5 str, and a little more to others. so fenrir is an awsome thing to have in your party.

It's this way:

Carbuncle, Shiva, Garuda, Titan, Ramuh, Leviathan, Ifrit, and of course Fenrir. Also, do them in that order and you'll pretty much always have the avatar of your next fight's weakness so you'll have an advantage.

Or maybe it's just me.

two way to get more Avatars

1. get your SMN lv-ed to lv.20

2. get one of your job to lv.60-75 (any job)

and if were thinking of getting a PT(lv60+) to help u get Avatars @ low lv., the chance = 0% and most likely the fight would failed cuz the fight really needed a full PT member of lv60+ to WIN!!

Not really..for other avatars battle (not fenrir) In my pt we were: Pld 75, Drk 75, Brd 75, Whm 60 (me), Summoner 52 and Whm 43
So pt full of lvl 60+ still might get wiped out if pld got pwned, so the tanker should be 70+ to be more concerned in winning the battle

Shiva, Titan, and Leviathan first appeared in FFIV. Ramuh, Ifrit, Carbunkle, and soon to be Bahamut (according to E3 pics) first appeared in FFV. Gaurda looks kinda like Siren in FFVIII and if Gaurda is supposed to be Siren, Siren first showed up in FFVI.

you can also argue that Jinn in FFIV is Ifrit, but the name ifrit did nt apear till FFV
