To all the people that say you need 6-12 people for this...

A 75RDM/PLD can solo this with ease. It hits semi-hard, but nothing you can't mitigate with Stoneskin/Phalanx. Just keep Slow and Paralyze on it, and you'll be fine. Use Spirits Within when you have TP (you might consider loading your TP to 300 before the fight, it will take a LOT of this thing's HP). If you're tanking it for some friends, just toss Flash when you can.

Need help with this NM on Sylph? /Tell me. If I'm not busy, I'll help you out.

Carbuncle Earned His Keep on this one

Soloed this NM about an hour ago with my SMN job. Even with 3 attack merits and 2 accuracy merits, it took nearly 2 hours to chip away at Magic Sludge's HP.

I basically took it on a tour of the 1st map of Toraimarai as it was aggro-free. Had to be careful with my BPs since I knew it would be a long fight and running out would mean disaster (Yag drinks would have helped, thinking back on it).

After whittling it down to about 10% HP, I decided to go for Meteorite and (if necessary) Searing Light. Turns out I only needed one more Meteorite despite it being Darksday.

Carbuncle came through big time in getting me my Wizard's Petasos. He earned a vacation for a while.
Got it in 2nd try.......
# Jun 23 2006 at 1:36 PM Rating: Decent
Tried it twice yesterday T.T
1st set up was:
74drg, 51blm, 56blm, 58blm and 59blm.
Got owned in 5min. [/cry]

2nd set up was:
75bst, 75thf, 74drg, 61blm, 59blm, 58blm and 56blm.
Killed the NM in 15min. [/joy]

Took it down solo as NIN72/WHM36, not too bad really, thing couldn't hit the ground as far as accuracy, although he does swing fast. Blind refused to stick, but slow stuck everytime on him. Lost it once due to me running out of MP near the end and it landing a lucky Bio3 but 2nd try went smoothly. Spirit's Within is your friend! If I'd tried it with katana it would have been pointless, thing takes practically no phys dmg.
Diabolos owns this
# Apr 15 2006 at 7:46 PM Rating: Decent
You would think that Netherblast from diabolos would be resisted by a dark elemental, but it's not the case. This guy droped in no time solo as SMN75/WHM37, Netherblast does full dmg, and if you run low MP just run around the ledge and use carbuncle until you have enough MP to keep going.

I decided to try and solo it RDM75/BLM (kite&dot). Long story made short: i barely escaped. Sludge will build resistence to gravity, nukes are getting resisted and i cant stop it at all. Bio, Poison II, Choke, Burn and Shock sticked (281 enfeeble, 240 elemental skill) and dealt ok dmg. Decided to try again as RDM75/NIN meleeing it.

2nd try: Used O-hat, scorp harness, dodge earring, crow hose for eva, suppanomimi, amemet +1 for attack and martial anelace&hornetneedle for weapons. Started of with 200% spirits within (300% thx to anelace). Sludge attacks quite fast and accurate, eating away at utsu fast and sludge and bio III eat stoneskin (256 enhancing capped) like lil children sweets. Not sure wether i'm unlucky but it spammed sleepga (II) and Bio III, often in combination (sleepga eating shadow and then Bio). Around 15% HP i was below 100MP and 300HP, convert used. Went back to kite it and dot with poison II and Dia II. Took a few ages but worked since i tanked it's spells with utsusemi.

Enspell did 2-4 dmg (usually 18), blaze spikes 2dmg (normal 12), Martial Anelace ~6dmg (312ATT) and Hornetneedle for ~2dmg.

Used a parser and got roughly 25ooHP for it (did ~2100dmg when it was @15% and i had tgo DoT kite it). Got 39XP as lvl75.

EDit: thx for the bunch of tards that talk about their glorious victories against an AF NM with half or full alliances including bunches of lvl70ish ppl. USE YOUR BRAIN, goddammit. Those NM's were created to challenge a lvl60 pt in a time when even mobs were below lvl75. It's bloody obvious that those NM's cant really hit a NIN75 and it's even more obvious that a dozen 70ish ppl wipe the floor with them.

Okay... our LS blm needed this for his hat... myself (62 PLD/WAR) our static Drg, Whm, and of course the Blm. All lvl 62, except blm who was 60. Drg & I had 300% tp at start of fight, drg penta-thrusts to hold hate so I don't take dmg, then I hit it for ~600 dmg w/ Spirits Within, and began to tank, at this point the mob was at about 70-75% HP. Mages weren't too effective, nor was melee... I just hit spirits everytime it was up to 300% and had the whm hit me to full cure right before it went off. It took me 3 spirits within total to kill it, both myself and the whm had to 2hr and blm went into cure mode near the end of fight, but we did kill it with no deaths. FunkJunkies, say what?
Unusual Elemental
# Jan 30 2006 at 11:19 AM Rating: Decent
I have yet to try this again now that I am 75 BLM, when I did do this however I was 60 and the 75 BLM that came along with the Alliance stated Magic damage doesn't do much of anything to this particular NM. Now since then I have solo'd a great many Dark Elemental, Lemure in KRT, Dark Spark, Ose and various other mobs. I don't have any records and can't find any 75 BLM that did nuke this thing. All I ever have been informed of is AM using BLMs which any 70+ BLM should know if they didn't know sooner doesn't do as much DMG as Tier III GA spells in addition to costing more to cast and taking longer. I am curious to try tho and would like to see the effects of a 75 BRD and BLM with Lightning Threnody and Thundaga III, I pressume that the BLM would see less resistance by a great deal. Again I cannot say this as a fact as I know this is an unusual Elemental that is quite resistant to level 70 BLM magic {Hume}. I am still however curious to see if my 75 Taru BLM can tear it up.

{Facts} This thing is immune to the Dark Element spells you may cast on it. Such as Drain, Aspir, Sleep, Sleep II, Sleepga, Sleepga II, Blind, Bio, Bio II ALL of the Absorb Spells, Dispel AND now this is NOT a dark element but Dark Magic Stun. Then again these rules apply to a somewhat lesser degree on the Dark Elementals themselves.

I hope to respond later with further test results on DMG.

Easy Fight
# Oct 30 2005 at 1:22 PM Rating: Excellent
I formed a pt for this tonight, consisting of 6 58-61 BLMs and we hired a mercenary (74 PLD). We also picked up a 60 RDM in Windhurst.

We put 5 BLM and the RDM in one pt, and the other BLM (me) in a pt with the PLD.

Nothing tragic on the way through the ???s, except once we ended up fighting 4 linked Makaras. Only one person went into the yellow, thanks to having 7 sleepers and Stoneskin all around. XD

While the other five BLMs did the pop/depop trick, PLD built TP on bones and scorps in pop room, and I switched to 70 RDM for the NM fight.

I was back before the 1st NM depopped. Here is some useful info: If not enough time has passed between BLMs clicking the ???, they will get the message The magic stagnation is spreading... Each BLM must get the cutscene and pop the NM, or the fight will not count for them. One of the BLMs timed the pops at 5 minutes.

My sword strikes at 187 sword skill (/blush) did 3-5 damage per hit, and a fully-loaded Spirits Within did 478.

Silence and Blind (duh, Dark Element) didn't stick, but Slow and Paralyze did. Paralyze kicked in about every third mob attack, so it's very useful IMO. I subbed WHM for Erase, and PLD got hit with Bio III three times.

All said and done it took us an hour from Lower Jeuno to be back in Lower Jeuno with our hats in hand.

Lessons learned:

1. Have a WHM for Erase.
2. Have a RDM for Refresh.
3. Only one high-level is necessary if he is a PLD.
4. Keep Sneak on the entire trip, including pop/depop sessions. (We were casting right at the edge of the pop room, and the Magic Sludge didn't aggro it.) If you get aggro on the way to the final ???, you will most likely get linked.

No food, no drinks, nothing fancy...

I formed a party to fight this thing today. The jobs were:

70RDM (me)
66NIN
75WAR
73BST
57BST
65BLM
74THF

it only took about 2 mins to kill. No one even went in the yellow with their hp. now i am off to windurst to get my hat :D

Are mage's more useful for this? Or are melee just as useful..

I did this today --

60 BLM/WHM (me)
58 BLM/WHM
63 BLM/WHM
67 PLD/WAR
68 WHM/BLM
58 SAM/WAR
70+ DRK/??? (anonymous)
73 SMN/WHM

The first time we attempted it (without the DRK) we got massacred as the sludge cast Sleepga II as we were preparing our big skillchain. Recommended strategy: have the melees fight the sludge at the far end of the room while mages stay in the hall out of AoE range. BLMs are going to be backup healers on this fight (unless they're a lot higher than 60, anyway) as anything thrown at it hits at least a 75% resist. Spirits Within and Souleater are Very Good Things(tm).

Make sure to examine the ??? again after killing the sludge -- I'm not certain if you'll spawn it again if you hit it again after zoning, but it's at least likely to be a royal pain in the rear to get back to the room.

All in all, a bit of a nasty fight, but nowhere near as bad as many other AF-3s *cough*paladin*cough*. Good luck to all!
Damn sludge

Basically duo'd this thing with a 65RDM and 71PLD, with 2 BLMs in the party who couldnt touch it. I suggest saving to 300% TP and unleashing Spirits Within on this thing, it doesnt resist its damage, with the PLD doing 600dmg then stacking my 470 onto it, this thing dropped pretty fast.

Looking back at the fight, it appeared to have around 3000HP or so, it likes to drain a lot as well.

GL all you BLM out there.
Fun....

So I'm taking BLM to level 75 as my next class having already taken BRD to 75. A few others in my HNM LS are also taking BLM up and we decide to go do this together. So 50 BLM and 52 BLM, 54 BLM, 75 RDM and 75 NIN go to get it. We have no problems getting there and we clear the room one spawns and we decide just to kill it figureing it would be quick. Well level 50ish BLM can barely hurt this thing. However it couldn't do jack to the RDM and NIN so they just beat on it til it died. We all got our hats and found out 300% Spirits pwns this thing.

You won't be able to solo it, and get the AF. If you want to solo it for someone else I'm sure you could. You must be blm to get the AF because of the manafont

Actually this is only partially true.

My boyfriend and I just got done doing this for my 51 BLM. He's a 75NIN. We went down together and checked the ???'s. After you use Manafont at the correct ???, you can leave and change jobs, and come back and pop the Sludge and fight it on another job. The Sludge CAN be popped on any job, so long as you have examined all the ???'s, and used Manafont correctly and gotten the other cutscenes.

Well its not as hard as they say......

Party setup
72 BRD
75 BRD
72 NINJA
54 RANGER
60 PALADIN
62 BLACKMAGE
60 BLACKMAGE
60 BLACKMAGE
74 REDMAGE
72 BLACKMAGE
55 WHITEMAGE

We have a little truble finding the ???

When we get to the main room we proceed to kill the Scorpians and Undead one of the BLM decide to pop Magic Sludge even with a scorpian and 2 undead we take it pretty easy. We clear the room me and the other mage spawn it twice more and kill it on the 2 pop it takes lots of hits but dos'nt seem to hit that hard.

So Grats me,targon and evemogo on our new hats^^
What it takes.

I'll just skip over the whole background story of my adventure to get this hat, I just was a 61blm w/o full AF so i felt pretty bad, but ok. We got a party of 6 people together and flew through this quest.

Why I posted is to just say that if you have a decent party of 6, (lvl 60+) with 2 or more competent lvl 70s this mob isnt hard at all. Getting through the ???s isnt hard either as long as you keep sneak + deodorize on for those that need it, I didnt even touch invis. If you can, just stick to the BLM AF Walkthrough (its all accurate) and you will be done in no more than 30 min.

Good luck everyone who's trying this, hope this helps.
how I beat it
# Mar 21 2005 at 10:53 PM Rating: Decent
how i beat it:

so we had basically 10 blm's, and rdm, whm, and brd. we had a few more, but they left when we died before even getting through all the ???'s. I already had mine from my last failed attempt. Oh maybe I should mention how that went.

So there was this **** named Shinobi. There was this other **** too, but i forgot his name. Basically **** number 2 told **** number one that he'd pay for a tank. Then we finally got there, he got his stuff done so he could get his hat, and then told the group that he dind't want to pay and that everyone in teh group had to pay instead. so the Shinobi got all pissed b/c the group hadn't agreed to this before and so didn't want to do it, so Shinobi MPK'd us all. party broke up, end of story.

This time we all took turns spawning the thing and waited for it to despawn, took forever. We were planning on having blm/smn carby pull, brd sleep, and then we all AM at the same time. Well even though the bard had over 100 CHR, it wouldn't sleep. then it sleepga'd all of us. then most of us died though a few escaped out. Ok that's when my whm and rdm friends joined us. we all got R2's and got back to the NM spawn point.

this time we cleared out hte hallway, rested up, cleared out hte room (girtab last since it respanws rather quickly), rested up. everyone put sneak up and then we spawned it. Everyone started casting AM at the same time. Well not at exactrly the same time, which proved to be good. Hate keep moving everywhere an nobdy really got hit more than once. I'm not sure how many AM's everyone got off, but I did 4 (manafont halfway through of course). I think i did 4, though it might have died before the last went off. Anyway it died and we all got our last cutscene. So taht worked out really nice.
Not nearly as bad as other posters seem to think..

After helping 2 friends get their Summoner AF3, I coerced part of the alliance to help with my black mage's AF3 fight, as well as that of one of the people who helped do the SMN fights.

The alliance line-up consisted of:
70rng/35whm
52blm/26whm
69blm/34rdm
60whm/30blm
62blm/31whm
59blm/24whm
60blm/30whm
67sam/33nin

Our 75 monk friend wound up having to go to bed after the summoner AF3, which left tanking to either the samurai or ranger. Naturally, the samurai was more willing, and subbed ninja for it.

The fight wound up taking a fair amount of time, as nobody had any TP saved up when we fought the second pop. Also, blunders abounded as the black mages used Elemental Seal, only to fire a cure iii at the tank, etc. All in all, the mob resisted the hell out of most of the spells, but in the end we proved far more than it could handle, and it went down.

Still one of the easiest AF3s I've ever done, despite having half the people most AF3 parties entail.

Of course Bio would be resisted...it's a dark elemental... But Bio would do some damage, regardless, it's like Dia, in that, it can't be fully resisted to not receive the effect (w/o Blink type buff).
