Okay, to end the once and for all... If you are in the bombs blast radius, YOU WILL DIE. If you are out of the radius, you will still lose because the bomb has to be killed by you. If it was any other way this BCNM would be monopolized.

just wondering, could a galka MNK loaded up with HP+ gear possibly survive the explosion, and if so, could you still get the chest or does the BCNM automatically end when the bomb blows up?

I got 5 of my LS members to come with me for a BCNM50 run. I chose this one to get a Light Spirit Pact for my SMN. This was one insanely hard fight. Since the time of the count-down doesn't start until first damage was dealt, we had our 3 BLMs cast Their strongest spell at the same time. Time Bomb's health dropped to about health, then the race for our lives came into play. We had 30 seconds to kill this before time ran out, and it exploded. Time Bomb doesn't directly fight back instead it's like a walking. . .time bomb. After 30 seconds, it explodes and causes 1,000+ to all members ANYWHERE in the BC.
We unleashed all we had and got it pretty down in health. When it was just a sliver of health, it exploded causing 1,328 damage to me (didn't record other people's). We all fell and waited 3 minutes to get escorted out of the BC. We would've tried this again but Xenokai brought the wrong orb >.>. Ah well, I guess I'll go kill the Carby's MItts NM for Light Spirit Pact. :)
