• Infrasonics: AoE Evasion down effect.

 • Fireball: AoE Fire based magic damage. (Circle of effect originates from move target).

 • Tail Blow: Single target physical damage with an additional Stun effect.

 • Plague Breath: Frontal cone AoE Water based magic damage with an additional Poison effect.

Historical Information

Nussknacker is German for Nutcracker, a wooden doll usually carved to resemble a soldier or king that was used to break open the shells of nuts. The nut would be placed in the doll's "jaws", whereupon a lever on its back or shaped to resemble an arm was used to force the lower jaw upward, splitting the shell.

I killed this a while ago as 75 Brd/ 1 rng, was a tough fight, i had to 2hour paeon and kite it for a while around the hole to the lower level (it stopped just before it killed me to do some tp move) as I got my hp back up from double figures.
With a proper sub it wouldn’t be too tough a fight. 0/1

This NM is no harder then its placeholders? lol it almost killed a Lv.75 PLD I was with. Lucky his NPC healed him. Im 65THF and am 0/3 on this punk.

Edit: If you talk to the Rabao weather NPC and he says there is a chance of Sandstorms and that "caution is advised" the next 3 days.... Those are the perfect conditions to go start camping. I will say, that since those dumb lizards are on a 16 minute timer you want them to be dead when Double Earth weather hits. Also, Ive gotten Nutsacker to pop after the 3rd round of Double Earth weather. Kill those PH's as soon as they pop.

I have seen this ONCE in 3 real-life days, and that was 20 minutes into camping it on the first day. It dropped nothing, not even an egg, and I got 19 exp. No way it's level 70; it's no more difficult than the placeholders.

I spoke to the Rabao weather checker and found out Altepa was going to have possibility for double earth weather for the next 3 game days, so I figured, why not take another crack at those infamous "need double earth weather to spawn" NMs in Quicksand Caves. Grabbed my 75RDM/NIN and headed down there to start killing.

Nussknacker was first to appear, whupped his *** easily and got the Sand Gloves, 1/1 :D

Weather stopped after that, but I kept killing beetles, and the weather eventually reappeared with 2 minutes left to a respawn, and Diamond Daig appeared after that. Took longer to whup his *** but it was surely whupped, got the Protecting Bangles, 1/1 :D

Whacked both those NMs in about 2.5 hours of camping. No competition. I'd say it was a good night. :o

0 for f*cking 25.

150k, all right!

I've popped him within 90 minutes of the previous pop. Stayed up all night once and went 0/3 in 7 hours of camping.

Just finished with this, and got a few notes i'd like to post...

First of all, the respawn isn't 24 hours at all. Managed to spawn him after 2hours of second kill.
Also, he's not even close to 70... 65 at most.(Somepage and ffxi-atlas lists him as 60, seems reasonable) He hit me for 60-100 damage as THF/WAR wearing decent defense armor, and even without sushi and with his evasion bonus he was very easy to hit. Got drop in 3rd kill.

7 Lizard Tails and 42K gil to show for countless hours camping this idiot. Even when it finally drops, whee. 15 less HP lost when Ouryu does a magical attack or Kirin Stonegas me. What a retarded NM. Given how situational the drop is, it really should be more common.
Finally, Sand Gloves

Okay, I will share what I know from my experience.

1) He is not on a timer. There may be a cool down period from previous pop. I managed to pop him once and popped him again 6-7 hours later. Yes, Double Earth in effect at time of pop is a requirement.

2) It's been stated but I'll reinterate: the Gloves are not a definite drop. In fact, they may be a rare drop. Got mine on the 4th fight. I had TH2 for all fights and I upped my chr for the last fight. May be a rumor but WTH, thought I would try. Used a Panther mask during most of my fights on him and Placeholders. Noticed an increase in effectiveness of Lizard Killer effect with the upped chr.

3) Everytime I popped him, he spawned in place of the second Lizard I killed in the room (or the 4th or the 6th).

4) My strategy: Kill Lizard in tunnel. Safely pull first Lizard from room to Tunnel. Kill him there. Kill second Lizard in room. Rinse, repeat. This will help you to not get an add. Plus, if I was wrong about him popping in place of second Lizard, you could pull him to Tunnel so the second Lizzie doesn't link.

5) Repop on Lizards is approximately 16 minutes.

6) Started killing him at level 71. Having only Utsusemi: Ichi makes for a tougher battle but is doable.

7) Sleep Bolts do not stick. Blind Bolts and Defense Down Bolts (Acid) do. Bloody Bolts will help to replenish any HP you lose.

On the final kill for my gloves, I spent several days in that room when I could. It was a lot of time in the room. I didn't see him for several days at a time. He may have popped while I was gone, he may not have. Don't know but was not going to miss out on some good experiences happening outside that room. Over my time killing placeholders, I probably earned 6-8k in experience on EP Lizzies.

The gloves are nice. The stats are good. And if you are going to be fighting something(s) with Earth spells, the +11 Resistence on Earth makes for a good base. However, unless you are like me and need to get every nice piece of Rare/Ex equipment in the game, you may find a better use of your time instead of camping him.

12-24 hour pop, killed him in the am then 12 hours later then stayed, killing PHs till 24 hours later, (I slept for a few hours, but noone camps this thing on my server), then he popped almost exactly 24 hours to the dot. Everythin kahuulee says is right on point, cept the NM can and will pop if another sand lizard is there, but I have seen it pop in second PH pop without the first poppin. 0/3 im gettin mad but noone else camps it and I'm here 24/7 so I should get them. wish me luck and if anyone tries to step on my toes with this, I am not gonna be happy. I'll get my gloves, I've been patient, so can you. thanks alot. good luck

Ok, so we have determined that this mob will only pop during sandstorms (double earth), but has anyone established what the mob's cooldown time is? I think I'm one of the few people on Bahamut trying to kill him regularly, and every couple days when I check in and find double-earth weather, I go down there, kill placeholders, and he pops almost immediately. But, if I go back that same day, no luck.. Or even early the next day. Is it something like a 24 hour cooldown before he'll pop again, or is this just bad luck?

0/2, though, and a 75 DRG/WHM can solo this guy fairly easily. I used one juice and one fishkabob and doubt I really needed either, but it made me feel very safe. :P

Up to 0/6 now, so if nothing else I can confirm that the drop rate on these gloves is nothing special. I'm about to give up and just use the AF gloves, but these would really be nice to have, especially in TA-only circumstances..

Also, it is my guess so far that this thing is on a 24 hour respawn, but since so few people seem to care about him he'll usually pop for me when I go down there and it's sandstorming.

1/8 on these, suggesting the drop rate rivals that of Leaping Boots. -.- Only, instead it's a 24ish hour repop with an ANNOYING spawn condition. The only saving grace is that nobody ever camps it.

Don't go crazy with this guy, though, they're not -that- awesome. I only had to get the gloves on principle, and I had all but given up when I got mine. Was killing other things in Quicksand when the double earth weather popped.

Stupid Spawn times
# Apr 04 2005 at 5:17 PM Rating: Decent
Ok I was down in Quicksand for about 4-5 hours while double earth. Kept smacking the Place Holders with a friend. It´s a kinda easy fight with 2 person but soloable with no problem for a RDM xD. Just have to be careful cause of Pertify and Silence. We thought it´d be a 2-4hours spawn, like usual NM´s. But we were down there already more often and we ALWAYS get it to pop whilst: Double Earth Weather

Moonphase: Waxing Crescent: around 30ish % (30-38%)
Strange about that is. As soon as the Moonphase hit 30%ish, the Spawn window started. As it popped it were like 32-34%ish. So my GUESS.. it´s just a quess. It spawn during the "Double Earth Weather" and the pop window opens around "Waxing crescent: 30%ish". Could someone try and pop him around another time than this? And it has a very ****** drop rate btw xD
Edit: Gonna submit some picture from the NM and maybe from the Gloves ^-^v.

Notorious Monster Information

(Location Notes)

. .This Notorious Monster is located in a cave-like room in the Quicksand Caves which encompasses J-5, J-6, K-5 and K-6 on the map. You can take the J-9 entrance into the Quicksand Caves from the Western Altepa Desert to reach the room quickly. To reach the Nussknacker spawn room from the J-9 Quicksand Caves entrance, follow the corridor into the open and then hug the right wall the rest of the way there.

(Camping Notes)

. .The spawn room itself contains two Sand Lizards and five Anticans. The Sand Lizards, once killed, will respawn in sixteen minutes. There is a small tunnel that connects the stone corridor with the cave-like room that can be used as a safe zone for resting or killing the lizards and Anticans.

. .From what I have observed, Nussknacker will only spawn during a Sand Storm which can occur during double Earth weather. At that time, he is a lottery pop on the Sand Lizards in that room. There is a Sand Lizard that spawns in the small tunnel that leads into the room, but this lizard does not seem to be a place holder. As stated in other posts, if left unclaimed, Nussknacker -will- despawn should the weather change from double earth.

. .You can check with Amaja-Kumaja (F-8) in Rabao to get a weather report of the area, which can tell you which day will be best for hunting Nussknacker. The worst time for camping is when Amaja-Kumaja reports that there will be 'sunshine' with no mention of sand storms. The best time for camping that I have seen is when Amaja-Kumaja reports that there will be a 'chance of sand storms' or 'possibility of sand storms'.

(Battle Notes)

. .Battling Nussknacker as a level 74 THF/NIN is mostly uneventful and relatively easy. He seems to be only a little bit tougher than the regular Sand Lizards that populate the spawn room. The fights usually last for about five to ten minutes. I wear an Evasion set up and always bring a crossbow and bolts along with me. For food I either use a plate of Sole Sushi or a plate of Squid Sushi for extra Accuracy. No other snacks or juices are typically used during a fight with Nussknacker. Antidotes are recommended, as they will remove the poison from Plague Breath.

. .Nussknacker will use the normal TP abilities that most other lizards use. During my fights with him, Nussknacker has used Plaguebreath (Poison), a tail attack, a head-butt attack, an area of effect fire attack, a Defence Up ability, a personal Evasion Up skill and an Evasion Down ability. He also uses an ability that petrifies you, so be cautious when taking this mob on solo. When Nussknacker is lucky enough to land a hit, I typically take 50 to 110 points of damage from non-critical attacks and 120 to 200 points from critical damage.

. .Bloody Bolts are recommended. Sleep Bolts are ineffective. Acid Bolts are recommended if he raises his Defence via an ability. Blind Bolts are recommended.

. .The Evasion Down can be potent and can turn what can start as a roughly 80% miss rate into only a 55% miss rate. Blind Bolts can help neutralize the Evasion Down effect, however. Nussnacker appears to have roughly 6,500-ish hit points.

(Treasure Notes)

. .The Sand Gloves are -not- a guaranteed drop from Nussknacker. He does carry around 8,500 to 9,500 gil on him, though, so do not forget to Mug should you have that ability. You can Mug 2,000 gil on average. The lowest Mug I have received was 234 gil. The highest Mug I have received was 2,155 gil. Nussknacker will give about 20 experience points to a level 74 character. Therefore, Nussnacker's level should be around 60 to 65.

EDIT: New data; Cleaning old data up; Formatting and presentation clean up; Nussnacker Hit Point information changed. Notorious Monster name corrected; Screen shots submitted. (4/4/2005)

NOTE: Record as of 4/4/2005 - [1/5] - (Success! Sand Gloves do exist!)

he has 6k+ HP......

found and killed with mithra brd75/whm37 + taru rdm69/nin14 + hume blm69/whm34....kinda ripped through it with utter ease..our blm got 4ant links and our rdm got stoned once, lost very few HP and not vitally amounts of mp...

according to parser BRD75 took 797DMG (tanked while rdm was stoned) and rdm took 8dmg.

And sorry for the incorrect information on the Hit Points of Nussnacker. I looked at a Sand Lizard's Hit Points in the parser instead of Nussnacker's.

Finally got it to pop today after 5hrs killing lizards. It popped during double earth weather and DEPOPPED (F-U-C-K-I-N-G S-H-I-T) 1-2mins after the weather ended....great..i feel like sending some bombs to SE (anyone have friends that are willing to camp a NM for WEEKS ? or friends that can be in quicksands within 2mins ? )

Seen in the room J5-K6 as stated, while it was alive, only 1sand lizard was there so sand lizard are the PH <.<

EDIT: being pissed&spelling just doesnt mix <.<

EDIT: about 15min after the NM depopped, a normal sand liz popped in the room (aka the 2nd PH)

Update: after depopped camped there for another 5hrs and no pop. Taken up the camping 18hrs after last known pop....more to come

well, ok
Camped Nussknacker:

Time: 5:50pm-1:30am local
pop: 1 / 9pm local
day: earthsday
moonphase: waxing crescent ~30%
weather: sandstorm / double earth
note: depopped shortly after weather changed to clear

tried for 21-2hr pop following day
time: 5pm-9:30pm local (20-24,5hrs after sighting)
days: Lighning-Light-Dark-Fire-Earthday
monphase: waxing gibbous (various % )
weather: clear-earth-fire-double fire
pops: none

ergo: either no 24hr pop at all or only 24hr w/ added conditions.

After a maintenance, a 75 PLD friend found him and wanted to kill it. However, this little punk was a bit too strong for him, even with 2hr, the PLD had to zone it. He could've easily duo'd it with someone, done it as PLD/NIN, or I'd imagine he's easy for a 60+ party. Either way, not to be underestimated.

Appearance place :

Appearance conditions:

Did u ask the german translation team of SE to get that ? Nussknacker is a device that helps u crack open (wal)nuts....aka a nutcracker......(knacker can translate to cracker, (lock) picker, hacker, a type of sausage or can refere to an old man in slang)

Anyway, camped him like mad for days and weeks, never seen. Another jpn side translated somewhat like "while weather is sandstorm, lottery pop of surrounding lizards"....concerning the given facts i killed the PH non stop, even started directly after the maintenance (in case of a 24hr pop timer), but i have yet to see it. Anyone got any other clue ?
