Success, Failure and Things to Watch Out For

Did it 3 times with a full alliance of 68+. One of our WHM was being a moron, got pissy and left so we only had one WHM but all tanks were NINs.

First he will use his special move and paralyze people. A lot. Second, the pops are a pain, have 2-4 melee and a mage dedicated to just dealing with them (Tonberrys and Hecteyes). His spells aren't too bad. Myself and another BLM alternated Stuns and only once out of 3 fights was there a point where we both couldn't Stun and that was because I mixed up the order ><. He will cast Fire IV, Firaga III and Flare.

A couple of other things I noticed but can't explain: Hate was all over the place sometimes. Even with the NIN tank doing everything he could it would oddy shift toward a mage. During the first fight I was on Stun duty so I wasn't nuking for a good 2 minutes or so. He cast a spell so I Stunned and then it was the other mage's turn. About 10 seconds later I cast Bliz 3 for ~400, got aggro and was toast. Even though I did nothing for a long time I suddenly got hate and I don't know why.

The other thing is he would resist, a lot. 75%+ of my spells would be resisted for only 25 damage and that's with AF gloves, all the +INT I can have at this level and the appropriate staff for the spell. It seemded like his resists would rotate. For example, I could hit for full or almost full damage on say Bliz 2 and 3 but then doing a Thudner 3 would get almost fully resisted. Then a little later same thing for Thunder 2 and 3 and Bliz would get reisisted. I don't know if it was coincidence or what.

Anyway, we won the first 2, got smoked the 3rd. A couple people left so the alliance didn't have very many mages and we got 2 pops, one of them being a Tonberry with an elemental.
No 2 hour

It does not use Chainspell or any other 2 hour type skill. Would suggest 18 person alliance of lvl 70+, including 2-3 drk or blm to use stun, or have the other melee use stun ws. Hakutaku itself is not very hard, just the pops around it make it a bit hairy, since the eyes are EM to lvl 75.
How to get one:

You need to combine all five hakutaku eyes, dropped by named hecteyes around the game, via alchemy: lv84 recipe but I'd recommend a lv100 alchemist on lightsday. You then trade your hakutaku eye cluster to a ??? in Den of Rancor, and this mob spawns.

Apparently this thing drops Optical Hat 100% of the time.

THANK GOD!

Fought this once. Melee should be 73-75, mages 65+. This thing has tons of HP and since its a slime, without at least a few blms this fight will last over 20 minutes. So either have a lot of blms or have enough whms that one or more can always be resting.

It's melee doesn't hit extremely hard to a level 75 pld, but can one-shot anyone with Flare. Between the Flare and lvl 3 -ga magic, the PT will die without well placed weapon/shield bashes and stuns.

At some point, it will use chainspell and spam magic... all I can say is... uh, good luck with that.

Its not an easy battle, but it is worth the reward.

I haven't fought this NM myself, but the standard tactic for beating a mob that uses Chainspell is to either have a lot of people that can stun, or have a level 75 RDM/DRK use Chainspell/Stun on it.

Either that or prepare to have a few people die.

I need a little clarification here, need to make sure no-one's accidentally misled (such as me if I'm wrong).

The mob type is listed as a hecteyes, not a jelly (what I assume you mean by slime). I have not had the opportunity to fight many of these mobs, but levelling off gazers my party found that melee was very effective against them, while magic was heavily resisted, reactions opposite tht of a jelly. We went off no sources but observation, and I haven't seen anything about it elsewhere. Were my observations a fluke, or is your post a mistake? It would be useful to know because I've been telling others this, and I figure someone high enough to have fought the mob will know what they're talking about. Just looking for confirmation so I can undo any damage I've done.

I have fought Argus a couple times solo. I dont know how effective magic is against these things but my meele did fine. It was nothing like fighting a slime.

It's not a hecteyes like you are thinking of (doesn't float and doesn't only have one big eye), and it's not a jelly either... Imagine larger jelly.. that has about a dozen of small eyes stuck in it.

That IS a Hecteyes. Not a Floateye tho. There is a difference.

Please take note of when the person replied to made his post (Early May). There is no need to incorrectly flame people for asking a question.
