  • Significantly lower HP than the Genbu spawned in Ru'Aun Gardens.

  • Shares the entire ability set with the Genbu spawned in Ru'Aun Gardens.

  • Does not drop anything.

Historical Information

Xuan Wu (Genbu in Japanese) is one of the four symbols of the Chinese Constellations, representing the "Black Tortoise of the North" and of the season of Winter. The other three symbols being the "Azure Dragon of the East", the "White Tiger of the West", and the "Vermillion Bird of the South"

Each symbol corresponded to an element in the Five Element system, with Xuan Wu corresponding to the element of water.

  • In the Five Element system in China, there is a 5th legendary beast known as Huang Long, the Yellow Dragon of the Center. While there is no direct equivalent in Japanese, Huang Long is believed to be linked to the dragon Ouryu

The Impossible
# Apr 16 2005 at 3:15 PM Rating: Excellent
April 16, 2005, Time of Death, 3:47 PM Eastern Standard Time, Cait Sith server

Party Setup:
Matthias - Rng 73 /Nin
Karnir (me) - Brd 72 /Whm
Imrahil - Pld 71 /War
Rhaine - Blm 60 /Whm
Maxwell - Rdm 63 /Blm

And yes, you saw those last two jobs correctly.

For the first half of the fight, until Genbu used his Invincible 2hr, Imrahil was our kiter, while Matt basically went all out, and kited himself when he grabbed hate. Rhaine would stun, and Maxwell would main heal, while I threw in song support obviously.

Bout 3/5ths in, Matt took hate basically full time, and Imrahil died, er... three times(?) trying to get hate back, until we just decided to kite and damage it using Shadowbind and Sealed Gravity (yes, Rdm is lv 63, and Gravity did not resist once with ES).

Every single one of us took the fall at least once... I can't remember if Matt took a dive though, lol...

With a fraction of health left (on Genbu), Matt uses Barrage Slug Shot for 386 dmg, and Rhaine follows up with Sealed Freeze for another 284 dmg. Five minutes later, Matt Barrages 247 for the win.

Drops:
1x Earth Crystal
The Seal of Genbu
Arctic Wind
Aquarian Abjuration: Hands
Venomous Claw

Claw ^^ And the cost is split for five people alone, how's that for instant fortune?

I'll have screenshots up later on my website, and I think Imrahil is going to do a follow up post to link to the images he took.

And just for bragging rights, I'm posting this in the Genbu bestiary, and Cait Sith forums :P

I actually died four times, pretty much all in quick sucession. I'd get hate then go down again. On one occassion I shield bashed him... then he hit me for 300 with added effect 200 and a crit for 703 all in one monster double attack. I lost a grand total of ~7000 xp but oh boy was it worth it.

Near the end Matt would get hate with his shooting, then I'd get it back with a voke and flash and kite it until he pulled it again. Basically we just had to be patient and wear him down.

Here are the promised pictures:
Just another peaceful day in Ru'Ann Gardens...
Smile for the camera!
See Matt run! Run Matt Run!
Can't find me! (Was this death 3? Maybe it was 4...?)
Pardon me while I change my armor before it rusts...

Genbu is incredibly easy. I've yet to hear of even a weak LS wipe to him. He does have the highest Defense of any of the 4 Gods, but hes not that hard to hit.

Genbu is the D student of sky. Plain and simple, he is astoundingly weak. He hits hard-ish so nin tank or war tank, whichever. OR if you havent any, a pld can tank it just fine. No need to kite or Shadowbind, its 2 hr is useless. Also he does NOT drop w. Abj. Legs. that is a kirin only drop!

I am fairly sure Genbu does not drop W. Legs. Haven't seen it in ~30 Genbu fights. On the other hand, Kirin drops W. Legs for us about 40% of the time.

Durnit Aze & CE, you're blocking part of my name. So much for my 30 seconds of fame. ; ;

Cheers!

Zipacana, the NM that drops the stone to spawn Genbu , is harder than Genbu itself. ~.~

Our lvl 61 rdm landed gravity on Genbu 2x in one battle. Keep that on him and kite and you'll be fine. His 2hr isn't too bad, but it can be stopped with a well place Shadowbind.

PS - Fear my Chi Blast of 1370. ^^

I dunno if you ever fought Genbu before... but Genbu is a Paladin, he uses Invincible as his 2 hour. Disengage & Shadowbind is not required in the least, nor is kiting. Tortoise Song seems to do nothing at all, WatergaIII Flood and Water IV are easily stopped by a few DRKs and a stun order. Tortoise Stomp could meaby do a Ninja in if he happens to do it just as Utsusemi goes down, like after a PoisongaII for example.
Kiting
# Jan 06 2005 at 2:11 PM Rating: Good
I have found the easiest yet longest way to kill this is to kite it with a pld. Keep gravity and bind when you can just have pld voke cure self and other members and use other abilities to gain hate. Our ls does this every time w/o any deaths and it takes about 10-20 mins to kill it. If you keep gravity on it the melee just run behind it and hit while mages nuke. Anyway just throwing in my strat. The new genbu looks sweet.

Genbu x4
# Dec 14 2004 at 12:24 PM Rating: Good
Our LS recently fought Genbu 4 times and beat him with ease each time. He attacks really slow, has massive defense and I would guess about 20k HP or so. He does have an AoE Poison and AoE regular att that does about 200-300 dmg. Also he has one big attack that can take down your tank with ease. A good strategy is to have 2 pallys in front and have 2-3 THF's SATA hide before engaging to stick about 1000 dmg to the pally. We beet him in about 12-15 minutes, like I said, not too tough.

I don't believe Genbu drops the Zenith Crown or Crimson Greaves directly. Genbu drops the Aquarian Abjuration: Hands (used to uncurse the Cursed Mitts [-1] to make Zenith Mitts [+1]) and Wyrmal Abjuration: Feet (used to uncurse the Cursed Greaves [-1] to make Grimson Greaves [+1])

Genbu dropped cloth for a LS on my server a couple weeks ago, so although insanely rare, he does indeed drop it.

And 85 seems a little high for Zip, I'll check how much exp we get next time we kill him,

I do not believe Genbu drops Shining Cloth, though Suzaku does. Genbu's big money drop is the Claw. ^^

Gem of the North
# Nov 08 2004 at 11:21 PM Rating: Decent
Gem of the North drops off of Zipacna (Lv 85 HMN Golem) He's a pain to kill, he hits twice, he hits fast, he hits hard, and you will need accuracy bonuses to land hits on him. You can find him in Ve'Lugganon Palace. Takes about 8+ people to kill if you have a good group.
Genbu INFO
# Nov 08 2004 at 11:17 PM Rating: Good
This guy isn't THAT easy. You guys make it seem like killing a god is a walk in the park. My friend killed this guy and he uses 2-Hours when he is hurt. (Invincible) And he can additional effect: Extra damage for a good 200 + his origional damage even to well equiped Paladins. Not to mention if you ***** up the Stun spaming when he uses a sell everyone will die. (12 people died because someone was 4 seconds slow to cast Stun.) Other then that Ninjas should watch out for his spells cause Utseumi clones won't help you there.
