I have heard rumors in my linkshell that his level is that of the person who had traded the first item with this. This would make more sense than the depth, item, or location because, no matter what you trade it, how deep it is or will be, the level of the mob varies widely.

i remeber being extremely low lvl about 8/9 and seeing the ??? for this i fed it an item and it said it was right below the surface could've been nasty for me
I came across the ??? and it was 'close to the surface'. This made me very happy because I had spent hours chasing it down before only for some other party to make the final trade and kill it. So I traded a single item (I cannot remember what it was, but it was of little worth) and it became 'right beneth the surface'. I shouted for a teleport and got a young WHM in my party and asked him to trade something to the ??? for me. Before he could, it moved, but only to another part of the crag. He made the trade (8 earth crystals) and I made the kill with ease as a Lv 52 PLD. Judging from this and my previous experience (before I tried trading 8 stacks of distilled water will no difference) I'm not sure that the number or quality of items traded makes a difference. He just seems to move a step closer with each trade. And looking at Kayberry's post, maybe there is no way to predict or influence the NMs level. Perhaps it is completely random.
When i was soloing on my other character (lvl 51 DRK) this guy popped right out on the first trade and i killed it easily. When I was on my other character (lvl 28 WAR) with all my lvl 60 and 70 lvl friends it never came out. We sat there for hours trying to make it come out but it never did. :(
I was doing some teleports on day and another WHM buddy of mine waved to me and she poked the ??? she said trade the ??? something I wasnt using, which was a rolanberry pie. The Goblin popped and hit me for 100 pts of damage a swing. I had Blink effect up but he hacked through my shadows with little effort. That was not fun. Maybe I missed something but what determined the gobs level?
Attempting to solo this at Holla yielded two results: 1st time: took 2 days of trading junk clusters to go from "under the ground" to "right below the surface" (4 water clusters) to the spawn.(another cluster) Defeated it easily and received 3 gold beastcoins as lvl 55 thf. 2nd time: same exact process to spawn; it defeated me easily. Did not even have time to hide.
The moral of this story: If there is a trick to controlling its level at spawn, we don't know it yet. Good luck with this NM.
I solo'd this at lvl 40 PLD (twice), I only traded him one fish kabob, I had to 2hr. but got 3 gold beastcoins, 7000 gil and some other little stuff. I only every trade him one piece of food sometimes he pops other times he doesn't.
I tried popping him earlier but failed. We have concluded that you can only trade once per Vana'diel day. After my attempt to pop him, a BLM74 came and was successful. He began wacking away at the goblin and did a few drains to make up for lost HP. The goblin had about 75% of his health and he dropped his Frag Gernade on the black mage.
The black mage died instantly. How or why? I examined him. He was wearing a Bomb Queen Ring. -75 Fire.
I attempted him the other day as a 36 smn. Bomb Queen Ring would have nothing to do with the high damge. He dropped a frag bomb on Leviathan and did 104 to both myself and the avatar. I ended up with 12 HP and no avatar out when a whm came out with cure V and saved me.
I came across the ??? at the Crag of Dem and, having read this forum, realized that I should trade my junk to him and try to raise him. As a 38 PLD/19 WAR, I figured that there was a good chance that he'd own me. In any event, I traded about 20 crystals, 3 boiled crabs, some bat wings and some other junk that I had in my inventory. He didn't pop, but each time I traded with the ??? the Goblin came closer and closer to the surface. This leads me to suggest that his closeness to the surface has more to do with how close you are to popping him than, as some have suggested, his actual level. I traded everyting in my inventory in small amounts--sometimes it was rejected--and each time he kepts getting closer to the surface ("very deep" to "close beneath the surface" to "just under the surface." Finally, I got a 15 THF to come and when he traded some stuff the GOB popped. We killed him without any trouble at all--I think he might have taken 200 HP from me in the whole fight. He dropped some GIL (not much) and 2 Gold beastcoins. I guess the take-home message from my post is that his closeness to the surface might be related to the amount of stuff that you have to trade in order to raise him as opposed to his actual level; he kept getting closer and closer as I traded with the ???. Lastly, some of my trade were accepted without including crystals, so it's not just crystals that raise him.
Good luck all--with a 30 to 75 level range, I think luck is especially important with this guy.
I finaly got to fight this thing today i was out playing around in Tahrongi Canyon and saw the ??? and thought what the heck i will try to pop him, well i traded a few air clusters and no pop, the question mark then moved several times and then this 15 monk (Zaker TY!) came a long and i asked him if he would trade a air cluster to the ??? for me because at this point everything i was trading to the ??? was being rejected, well the monk traded it to the ??? for me and then it poped, sadly it hit the monk and killed him in one hit before i could voke it off him, i then proceded to bash away portions of the gobs hp with my word untill it finaly died about 2 minutes later, at the time that we spawned it the ??? said "You hear a voice from right beneath the surface of the ground." so he was very weak and was only hitting me for 20 - 35 damage and never used his bomb attack only a goblin rush which did 32 damage to me, At the time i was on my 52 pld/26 war and it dropped 3 gold beastcoins, 1 fire crystals, 500 gold and gave me 7 exp., All in all it was way easier than my first attempt in which he was hitting me for 200+. I gave the Monk 1 of the gold beast coins and the fire crystals as thanks for helping me out and raised him as well. ^^
One Question though, why does it reject offers after you trade it some stuff from time to time?
I second that. I had popped this NM before, and beat it VERY easily. This time he was hitting me very hard, but me and pet, (I'm a 72bst), were winning until the Frag Bomb. 1000 to pet and 980 to me XD
I solo'd this guy with my lv 48 whm. Before i spawned him i put on Protect 2 or 3 i forget and shell 2 with Stoneskin and Blink. I got him down to about 1/4 of his health when my stoneskin wore. He slap me around but i landed a Banishaga 2 just in time to watch him twitch on the ground in front of me. Hehe. Got 1k gil and a Gold Beastcoin.
I sometimes when i am bored will go with thf friend to kill him, killed him bout 20 times and now i Will never do it again.
A 36 whm in my pt (the thf, needed tele) gave him the last item to pop it. And right away he got hit by Double Attack for 250 each and he died. Hit me a 62 rdm at the time for 70-110 w/o phalanx, but he attacks so fast that i had to warp out, i got to HP with 115 hp left. Just becareful when spawning him, his lvl range is big. Never again will i camp him.
Me (60WHM) and my friend (61DRG) keep spawning this and have no problems with it. We normally get 773 gil, 2 gold beastcoins, and a few other various items each kill. Seemed level 40 and below each time.
Well, me and my 2 friends (51blm and 54whm) attempted to spawn this. He spawned. Killed me in 4 hits. 250+ each hit. The other 2 jumped on chocobos and ran. Most likely level 75. T_T
He does not stay spawned. I sat there dead for a bit and he came back and went back into his "hole".
Never again am I going to attempt to be a tank for an NM that has such a wide spawn level. ._.
A lv. 55 WHM and I (Lv. 50 DRK) popped this today when it was extremely close to the surface. All it took was 3 Yagudo Feathers, 3 Hare Meat, a 2 leaved Mandy bud, and an Odd postcard. We were prepared for the worst, so my whm friend had reraise and stoneskin up. Took 2 hits from each of us and a 300% Slice to drop him.
Dropped 750ish gil each and 3 gold beastcoins. We agreed that we each got a coin and then lotted on the third. I rolled 47 -.-v. I was even more disappointed when I got back to town and learned that the coins were worth 11k each >.<. Oh well, it was her idea anyways.
As a Lv 49 PLD, I decided I wanted to bag this thing or get wasted trying. The best (and increadably cheap) way is to trade 8 stacks of distilled water at a time. When it started it said he was "under the surface", then after 8 stacks he was "extramely close to the surface", then he was "right under the surface", but before I could find him again, he was killed at the holla crag. So it seems Jackal is right, any item works. Now whether or not every item brings it the same amount to the surface, is unknown.
i was just running around just killing tremor rams for fun waiting for the monk to come back from afk (we were getting ready to go finsh my samurai quest)i saw a ??? on the ground so i traded some stuff with it and nothing. I keep running around killing stuff and came back to so i traded again and then he pop so i jump him (47drg\23war) the monk and the whm came back i said i might need some help with him ,by then i was at 514/919hp and then i used double thrust kill him. the Monk and whm just got there as i killed him it was kinda fun i might go do it again just for the hell of it

I've spawned this NM twice, both being a 60 pld, once i spawned him wearing totally nothing except af body and ******* sword, took him to about 1/2 and died from a frag bomb which hit me for 800+, today i just fought him with my full gear and about 80% tp when i ran into the ???, traded it, popped, Hit him about 6 times, then used Vorpal blade, dead, dropped me three gold beastman coins.
ok... if anyone's still reading posts this far down here goes...
Gob archaeologist is a forced pop NM from a ??? that can be found near one of the 3 crags. if the ??? is left alone for a while (not sure what the interval is) it moves to a new location. if you trade to it but do not get him to pop you must wait a certain amount of time (i forget how long, maybe until the ??? moves) before you can trade to it again. i've been told that to pop it you must trade crystals and only crystals but it is my belief that any old junk will do.
the strength of the mob is DIRECTLY RELATED to the message you get when you check the ???. I.E. if "you hear a voice from deep underground..." the mob will be much stronger than if "you hear a voice from just under the surface..." i also believe the depth of the mob affects how much must be traded to pop him
and now storytime^^
i was once a level 19THF n00bliness running through tahrongi when some JP asked me to join their party. it was a 50PLD and some other pretty high RDM. they gave me a bunch of random stuff (can't remember how much if any was crystals) and told me to trade to this odd little ??? on the ground. when i did, lo and behold, a goblin popped up and smote me in one shot. it then proceeded to bashing on the pally and after a couple minutes had a strong lead in spite of the RDM being there. PLD died and RDM started running like mad to stay alive when some more people popped up, i thought it miraculous that a WHM, BST, and one other had just shown up like that to help out (i realize now the WHM probably tele'd them) and the pally got raise III. then it was a long hard fight until the goblin finally died, yielding 5000 (that's right) gil and a bunch of loot. i got a raise and like fair minded people they allowed me to lot. i didn't realize until later (like 20 or so levels later) how badly i lost out by not getting the coin, but i was pretty happy with my gob chocolate which was also something i had never seen before
the other time i fought the gob, i was 37THF with 61THF and 55DRG from my LS and the hi lev THF went a killed an element, traded the crystals and we beat the thing senseless... the money wasn't as good and we didn't get any good drops, but i got my revenge that day :)
