My level 36THF friend and I (43WHM) noticed the ??? with "right under the surface" by SE side of Crag of Dem, so she fed it a sheep meat, and mob popped right up. I Banish II to grab agro, taking it down almost 50% HP, it turned on me, and she used Sneak Attack, knocking it down to 10% or so, from which we simply beat it's little gobbie skull in. It was kind enough to drop 2 gold beastcoins in addition to the plethora of crap (7 items I think). If the avg pty level theory is correct, then I doubt it held true here, since I would not normally do 248 dmg to a mob that is close to my level, and it never even hit us, so I doubt it was even EP to us. /shrug

how odd i am a 60 pld and have killed him with no problem. Did it again with a full pt and pwned him in like 1 minute. He drops junk and if you are lucky couple of gold beastcoins =/

not worth the effort if you ask me
Maybe the items matter?

Has anyone considered the possibility that there is a connection between what items you feed him and what level he spawns at?

It IS possible. However, as stated in my previous post, I did a series of camps with the same person, in succession. What I didn't mention there is that we fed it exactly the same thing each time - an earth cluster. His level variability was still there.

I would say there are two possibilities. Either he pops at a lvl calculated by factoring in a whole bunch of things like average pt lvl, max pt lvl, which items, what day it is, how long he was underground before being attacked, etc. etc. In this case, I doubt we could ever isolate enough of the factors to be able to say "This is how you keep him low level."

The other possibility is that he simply pops with a certain degree of randomness (presumably, there's a lowest lvl, a highest lvl, and a "center" or average lvl), just like all mobs do. (which is the reason the number one rule for new players is "check, check, check").

Sadly, you have to attack him to gauge his strength.

Good luck, all!

Just thought I'd summarize:

Unfortunately, this guy is variable in lvl and difficulty. Clearly he varies significantly, since we've seen testimonial from lvls 35ish-60ish saying, variably, "we crushed it," and "we were slaughtered."

Sadly nobody seems to know what the pattern is either. Some people have guessed it's lvl difference in the PT, but I can tell you all definitively (personal experience) that he varies even with the same party makeup. Whm friend of mine (I'm a mnk) and I camped this guy 4 times within several days. First 3 times it was a cakewalk (I'm lvl 44/20, she's lvl 50/25.) 4th time, he owned us, just absolutely crushed us with no chance. We were the same lvl and job (heck, same equipment) for each fight.

The only other changes then were temporal (time of day, which day, moon, calendar date) and position (where the actual ??? was pulled up). So either there's just a nice bit of randomness involved, OR the previously mentioned variables affect it.

Good luck to all, and pray for a low lvl pop :-)
Not lvl 38

Im a lvl 57 thf, and this guy killed me in 4 hits, so he cant be lvl 38. =(
I defeated it!! ^_^

I was a lvl 25 monk with a lvl 43 whm that i just happen to run into. I guess we both wanted to fight it out of pure curiousity, seeing as how i've run by the ??? so many times. We had to give it alot of crystals, including one we got from an Earth elemental in the highlands. So this guy pops out, and im kinda startled o_O. I just bust out 100 fists and i take its life down way past half. The rest was easy work. It did do alot of damage though, probably hitting me for about 100 damage a hit >_-. The whm casted Protect II or III on me and kept my life high which made it easy for me to beat him. Not sure on how his lvl is based but it may be on the average lvl of the party because i owned it pretty bad. Only dropped Beastcoins and goblin chocolate ;_; but the fight was fun. ^_^

Speaking as the one that originally snapped this picture(a little Taru named Gokin was battling it), I'm not sure it has to do witht he common level of the party. He had invited me to help summon it, as apparently he had already done so earlier, mind you, this was when I was level 21 or so. He gave me 3 specific itessm, there was no 'Give me more' or any other comment. The moment I gave the items to the ??? he spawned, Gokin disbanded, and started whooping on it. The fight lasted about 5-10 minutes as I watched on, during which I snapped the above capture. In any case, I'm thinking Gokin may have been in his later 30's or early 40's, but the Gobbie still gave him a rough time, using its Bomb Toss once and hittign him for around 200 damage. I'm thinking his levels have more to do with what items are given to him, then what the normal level of the person or party is..
RE: Hmmm...
# Aug 01 2004 at 10:03 PM Rating: Decent
I am Gokin and i remember you helping me, the items are not specific. i just happen to have those. and yes it kicked my *** for quite some time, i had to pull out benediction.

note; i was stoneskined blinked aquaveil blaze spikes protectra2 and protectra2
i was Lv40 at the time, top gear.

i dont know what determines the level of the mob

i invited a 55drk had him trade the items in, he killed it in 4 shots.

i invited a 21 war, Mindsedge.. it spawned at LV40.. so i just dont know

COuld it be that his drops are a random lot of what he's been given as offerings? (+GoldBeastman coins of course)

Like out of the ~10-15 items he's been given, he drops a random 4 of them + gold beastcoins ?
my deduction
# May 07 2004 at 9:28 PM Rating: Default
judging from what people have been saying about this NM leads me to beleive that the lvl he spawns at is based on the average lvl of everyone in the party that spawns him. because I see stories of full AF parties barely winning, yet just last night I watched my bro(lvl 30ranger) with his farming buddy (lvl 48thf) kick this guys ***. It dropped poison dust, 946gil, and a gold beastcoin, and the thf mugged him for 872gil. So basically the way to fight this would seem. get your high lvl char, like 40+ then find a noob running aorund and have him join pty, trade the item to spawn him and kick his *** then boot the noob and take the drop =D

Dunno if some of the posts above are total BS, or if this mob's level is totally random, and not dependant on anything such as 'average level in the party'.

Scenario:

Me (Lv. 50 Drk/25 Thf) and a friend (Lv. 44 Whm/22 blm) fed it ONE Scorpion Claw (Just got back from Shakhrami). He popped instantly.

He hit me 4 times for about 200-240 damage per hit, I was down to about 20 health or so, whitemage was mid-cast with Cure III, she ended up getting aggro off me, you can see where this is going right?

He destroyed both of us.

Repeat. Level 50 Dark Knight, Level 44 Whitemage.

No BS, straight fact. I'll post a screenshot of the buffer in fact, in the next post.

I also came across this beasty. I, level 38 RDM and my friend, 32Thf. My friend was not in zone when I fed the ??? with a piece of crab meat.

It popped, I was going to run for the choco but then decided to try anyways considering I previously saw 2 level 61 get killed by this thing.

I quickly threw on phalanx, stoneskin and barfira. This monster tossed a bomb that did 154 damage and was starting to cut through my buffs before I killed it. This thing was a close fight, he got me down to 25hp.

My drop, 1 gold beastcoin, 1 broken willow rod and 1k in gil, not to mention 12xp for killing it.

This beasty I killed was at the Dem crag. The previous fight i witnessed was at the Mea crag. I still believe this thing must be some kind of average or random level NM. At the Mea crag the 2 persons I watched were not in a pt and the bomb toss on the final whm player was around 400+damage.

p.s. This thing hits hard without buffs. ^^//

my lv60+ thf buddy said the ?? was "extremely close" .. so he urged me to find a teleport to DEM, so i did... but unfortunately a lv71 whm beat me to it...

so my buddy leaves...goes off wandering for rams, but i stayed to watch the fight.. and i see the gob archaelogist take 400+ dmg off lv71 whm .. so i /tell my buddy.. "i think the whm is gonna die" ... he replies "naw.. he's a hi level whm" .. but i'm still thinking there's no way any whm can survive multiple 400+ dmgs ...

so i watch... hexa, cure3, hexa, ... then gob drops bomb and whm is dead... ouch

i tried to voke afterwards.. but it wouldnt let me...

... but i did get to send a /tell "i told u whm was gonna die" =p

Me, 48 whm, a 46 drk, a 58 drg, and 2 30 rdms owned this thing in no time. The Drg used Penta Thrust for 1309 dmg. It was dead in no time flat. We got 200 gil a piece, 2 gold beastcoins, rabbit hide, gob helm, a clump of some sort of moss, and a rusty box. We spawned this guy at Konschtat by trading items to him 6 times. It didnt matter what items we traded to him, just any old thing worked. He was very easy to kill.

My friend Rosalee and I went to the ??? specifically to fight this NM. We were scared we'd be owned, but we're explorers, so we did it anyway.

We went to La Theine first, but couldn't find the ???... someone must have fought him recently. So I teleported us to the Dem crag.

The first hour we each gave it an item, and for a while I honestly thought it didn't matter if we both did, that it would only get closer once each hour.

So we invited three friends to come and help us because after 3 hours of trading him stuff (we fought Elementals that appeared to get clusters to give him) he was "extremely close".

Well, one of our party members marched up and gave him a crystal and he popped, so I'm thinking you can bring a party of 6 and get him to pop after everybody gives him one thing.

It was a good fight but not really that dangerous. We were all level 40+. He dropped a gold beastcoin, a fishing rod, and various other stuff -- everybody got 375 gil. I'm planning on doing it again and seeing if we can all get him to pop without waiting for hours. ^^

NOTE: The ??? doesn't actually *disappear* at any time before it actually pops, it just moves and reappears every minute or two, always close to the crag. We literally chased it around the crag the whole time that we were waiting to give it items again. You just have to find it when it moves. One of us would go fight an elemental if we could while the other(s) watched the ??? to make sure we knew where it was.

And yes, it can be stolen from you. Don't let a random curious newbie walk up and give it something if it's "extremely close" to the surface, otherwise it'll OWN him and NO, it will not disappear.

Another time fighting this mob, Rosalee was the one who popped the monster, and she was killed. Once the Goblin kills its target, it STAYS. A high-level RDM attacked it after Rosalee dropped, and we were very confused... she waited for me to get my strength back and I raised Rosalee. This RDM stood with her back turned while the Goblin hit her, curing herself every once in a while. She stood like that for almost 20 minutes while Rosa got her strength back, regained HP/MP from weakness, and we both stood up. When that happened she disengaged and let us fight him, healing us all the way.

We were so confused when we watched her just letting it hit her. At first we were upset because we thought she was just showing off, but it turned out she wanted us to get the fight she thought we deserved because the Gob jacked Rosalee so hard straight off. After we beat him we were very thankful and we must've kneeled 5 times each.

Thanks, Florey -- even though we couldn't understand a word each other were saying, you were really cool. ^^

After he killed a curious newb that came along and traded it It disappeared almost right away but I believe that it was because the dummy called for Help! uggg..... DO NOT CALL FOR HELP is you are fighting a NM! Anyway it started and was extremely deep in the ground. We fed it for 5-6 days before it was extremely close to the surface. I have lost the Gob 2 times this way now I may just wait around and let someone else do all the work for once.

Judging by the stories I've heard here and other wise, I wouldn't doubt that in the least. Seems credible too. If ya try and solo it, it would be an even match fight, and if you had, say, and 75 and a 25 PTing (dun ask, random easily averaged numbers. ^^; ), then I'm guessing it would spawn as a level 50 or so.

Just extending on the idea though. I myself have never fought/seen it. ^^;

Ok, I think that this NMs level is WAY off...

I was walking to the crag in the Highlands, has just seen a Rampagin Ram, I'm not the type to pass up a NM =)

Anyway, going to the crag, I'm heading to the lady who rents Chocobos, I was comming from the left side of the crag...I come up and see 5 **** in AF fighting this sucker, and it's a REALLY close fight, neck and neck, the whole time...

The PT consisted of:

WHM, NIN, PLD, WAR, THF, DRK.

They were lucky to make it, it was about to use a bomb toss when the last hit was struck.

Either this thing is a random level, or it's level is based off your own.

So today me and 2 friends decide to hang out my the Crag of dem. After a few days of feeding it random junk, crystals, fireworks, etc. we get the Gobbie to come out. He owned us in less than a minute. We had 2 lvl 46 mages and a 31 thf. About 290 damage we took per hit.

The entrance to the right of the korrolaka tunnel exit to east altepa, go inside and hug the right wall and its just a bit down the hill, about midway from the zone to the first corner.

Goblin Footsteps != ??? to spawn Goblin Archaeologist.

The Goblin Footsteps are a mechanism to replay any cutscene you viewed in any outdoor/dungeon zone (i.e. the Bard Flag quest custcene in Buburimu Peninsula).

To activate the Goblin Footsteps, you must have first witnessed a custcene in the zone (there are footsteps near at least one entrance/exit from every outdoor zone I've been in). Then the Footsteps will prompt you for items. Just give it any one random item (kill weak things in the area until it drops something and trade it that). This will spawn an NPC Goblin who will offer to 'tell you a story.' From there you can pick from a list of cutscenes to replay.

Enjoy.

when it spawns it aggros the person and its like they are engaged so no one can steal it or help the person out. oh and it disappears right after the person dies that summons it. I am really mad but i kill this thing becuase i waited hours try to get it to spawn and had a LS buddy trade it something not knowing it would auto-engage so i couldn't help and he couldn't live.

Info about this thingy

Some information about this NM-type goblin: 1. He's not as strong as it says he is up there. Kitora (29 war/1 rng) and myself (29 mnk/12 war) have beaten this thing multiple times. Also, each time we fought it, we brought a level 20-something thf along for TH and gilfinder. 2. This thing has an awesome drop. With a 23 or so thf in our 3-person party, each person got more than 500 gil. First time we killed it it dropped two gold beastcoins, willow fishing rod, rock salt, and some other assorted junk. Second time we killed it it dropped two gold beastcoins, (again, yay!) a poison potion, and some junk. Third time, one beastcoin, poison powder, and a broken willow rod. 3. To make this spawn, look around the crags for a ??? in the ground. Talk to it, it tells you to leave all the stuff in you bag. Trade it anything, wait one vana'diel day, and trade it something else. It'll pop, and you can kill it. I'm not sure about how long the ??? takes to come back, first time we killed it, it came back about two days (vana'diel) later. Well good luck on this thing and happy hunting! ^^

My friends found the ??? near the Crag in Tahrongi Canyon, so I'm assuming it's near all three Crags.

A friend read somewhere that if you give the ??? crystals correlating with the weather element of the zone, then it'll appear. So, we gave it 2 wind clusters and a stack of wind crystals, and he took 2 Ouka Ranmans too, and he appeared. Each time you give him something it says "Give me more!" and when you check the spot it says how close to the surface he is. The spot moves every 5 minutes or so. But, always around the Crag.

He dropped: Rotten Quiver, Broken Willow Fishing Rod, Gold Beastcoin, Goblin Mail, Pickaxe, and a couple other miscellaneous things that I can't remember.

He seemed rather easy with a level 45 RNG, a level 30 blm, another level whm (can't remember) and myself, level 50 WAR.

Oh, I'm not sure about the spawn time yet though.

The lvl on this NM probably varies somehow, I fought this at the Crag of Dem as 43 Bst, with a 33 Blm, 30 Rng, and a 40 Drk, it was hitting for 120+ dmg and it killed all of us

I saw this guy totally own a 56+ whm (was anon, but had partial AF on).

And I mean TOTALLY own. She didn't even take a sliver of life form the thing, 'till it used it's Frag Grenade TP attack (similar to bomb toss), and she died.
RE: I did this
# Mar 23 2004 at 9:35 PM Rating: Decent
I've done it once more, since then. It seems you can only give offerings once every hour, but anyone else can give an offering after you have. So, each individual can give things, and then end up stealing it from you.

Also, I had a level 40-something whm escort me to the different crags, and I traded items to each one, and we both could only trade items once, but he gradually got closer to the surface... It's a different one at each crag though. We traded to the ones in La Theine and Tahrongi, but the one in Konschtat was absent. So, I'm assuming someone had faught that one recently.

A constant drop seems to be the gold beastcoin.

There is a ??? spot in the ground somewhere on the north side of the crag in the highlands. I imagine that is the right spot. I might go try this out with a few friends, but if the goblin comes as anything higher than lvl 34, it will probably mean my death...
