Vana'diel Bestiary: Cactrot Rapido  

I have always read that the only way to stop this speedy sod is to aggro it through a link. Imagine my surprise this evening when I was logging out in Eastern Altepa Desert, and just a couple seconds before Log-out was executed, Cactrot Rapido sped by, and I swear he stopped to aggro me, although, there wasn't enough time for me to Auto-target because it didn't attack right away. Like most mobs that aggro when you're resting, he stopped, locked on to me, and turned around ready to strike. Immediately after this, log-out executed, and I was staring at my desktop. I logged back in, ready to die just to confirm this, but didn't see him.

So, next time he's running by, and you're looking to aggro him, try resting if you don't already have a Sabotender engaged. When he runs by, it shouldn't be hard to get in his way or just near him, and hit your "Rest" button/macro. It just might work. Like I said, I didn't have a chance to test it again.

I was in east altepa with my 16 rdm for no particular reason i was just bored and a cactuar aggroes me so i figuer id just let it kill me then i see Cactrot Rapido run by link and kills me with 786 damage it was kinda funny

:) Was quite easy. The dmg power of one red mage (poison 2 is only source of damage), with the blink tanking power of three. :D A RDM/NIN with high Haste%+ can solo this.

Killed Cactrot Rapido today with 2 buddies, 75RDM/NIN x3,
we basically bounce hate back n forth, kept nothing but paralyze2/slow2/poison2 on it. No Bio, cuz that gives it TP. When it got to 7% we decided to all 3 cast tier 3 nukes on it. It died in 2 blizzard III's Got it our first try.

It did manage to get a little tp when it would knock through our Stoneskin. We got super LUCKY, I won't lie. It did 1000 needles instead of 10,000 needles. Did that around 45% life.

The Fight took us an Hour roughly from start to killshot.

Each of us converted about 3 times during the fight, and the other 2 rdms would cure the one that converted to keep hate balanced.

Earring and Root dropped, root sold in like 5 minutes, it's for the Sun Water BST Jug. And doesn't appear very often. Earring isn't worth nearly as much as bow, but it was still awesome taking out this incredible NM that can normally take down alliances, with only 3. :)

We had a few spectators that showed up during the fight, but due to the lengthiness of it, got bored and left.

Avesta did solo it, but not all RDM's have his uber gear, which is his real secret. That and his amazing gear-swap macros. It still took him over an hour.

I saw this guy running past when I was watching my friends level their BST in Altepa. My first thought was "WTF?! Sonic the Hedgehog?!" Then I laughed at him and walked to Bastok. THE END! ^.^

this guy was running around unclammed nere the bottom quicksand caves zone and it was scary been a lv 47 PLD (friday the 7th of april)

I've only seen him once but he left a lasting impression..... we were running around trying to find the correct place for sand tarantulas and helm beetles after just coming from rabao (/dance cuz i won 10k from lady luck npc) and we spot a cactuar so my friend checks online to see if the aggro and our mage cast sneak and just as he is the cacuar attacks us... now i've played ffx so i know all about how devestating 10000 and 1000 needles can be. unfortunately there it was directed at 1 person not the whole group ): well we are owning the cactuar when i see a huge dust cloud go by and i notice another cactuar standing next to me so i 2 hour as i'm already a little low on hp our black mage who saw it elemental seals and sleep 2s but is resisted and we started running and of course being fairly far away from the zon i already know i'm dead so i stand there while the others run. well if i thought they were safe i was dead wrong less than 10 seconds later i see the blm hp drop to 0 followed by every1 else one by one the thf uses perfect dodge and flee thinking he can out run it but from the fact that his hp dropped to 0 at almost exactly 31 seconds meant he had no lead whatsoever on this thing. well it was a huge laugh for me but our blm didnt see it as beiing funny i guess and he left wasting about 2 hours since we had been that long and ther was not 1 replacement in distance. well at least i got 10 k out of the trip :/

Oh gawd.. I was partying in desert 3x bst party and we were fighting a dhalmel.. along comes a cactaur to aggro us. then along comes a @#%^ing fleeing cactaur that comes in about 2 seconds wipes us out in 1 hit then is gone just like that. We all laughed cause were bst and death doesn't affect us.. and to think it aggrod us from the godamn cactaur >< funny story though. peace

Ok how is this for a funny story. I wuz walking through east altepa looking for a party as a lvl 30 war/15thf, when i saw a ls party with full aliances fighting this thing. I had nottin 2 do while i waited so i stood back and cheered them on. They get it down 2 10 hp when it casts 10000 needles and kills the rest of the party!!!
So i said screw it and came from behind and sneak attacked it. I defeated it and got both items!!! Then when i wuz running back 2 bassy after a good day of partying I ran into one of the lvl 73 white mages from the same party i stole that kill from. She had about 40 mobs argoing her and she ran straight towards me and warped. It wuznt preaty....
but i sold the ring for a preaty decent profit so it wuz worth it. :P

killed this guy last night on siren server.
Was fun because I was originally there just for drg af. I saw this guy run by and had no idea what level he was. When I saw he was an 80+ HNM i called in my buddy's HNM ls. We had a full alliance most were 70+. First time we fought him we whiped but had him down to 10%. He spams 10000 and 1000 needles so everyone in your alliance should get close to him. Second time we fought him we won but still a lot of death! Got the earring but no bow ><
The funnest part about this guy is catching him! Absolutly no way to claim other then getting a link. Happy hunting!!

I was leveling my 32 bst in E Altep today and was using spider vs spider. I'm meleeing with my spider and all of a sudden this cloud of dust with a name comes out of nowhere and thought for sure I would get aggroed but just flew by. It scared the hell out of me for a sec.Then I check on here to see what type of NM cataur it was and seen he can only be caught up with another cataur for a link pull, lmao funny stuff.

My friend and I were killing time in Altepa after levelling our NPCs when I saw Cactrot for the fourth time since we'd gotten there. I tugged on his sleeve and said, "HEY, let's kill it!" He shrugged and said we'd have to link it with another cactaur. Well, since I see this friend as a badass and thought Cactrot would be a regular NM, I begged him to let us try it.

We kited a regular Sabotender around for about five minutes and Cactrot came running up. I slept the Sabotender, looked at my friend's (72NIN) HP bar and my jaw dropped. Then Cactrot one-shotted me and took three bites out of my friend.

Lying in the dirt, I said, "...you don't suppose that was an *H*NM, do you?" He said, "Nah..."

But I've heard several people here call him an HNM, so I need some kind of confirmation. It sure as hell hit me like an HNM. ;3 Is it?

I was XP leveling in my pt.We lose a man and decide to go play on surface for a while(we were in caves) .So we start to kill ants and get 30 xp per kill.Then I see a cactuar come running from off screen and aggroed me.pt said zone it so because they were fighting a IT ant ,so i'm omw to nearest zone bout 1 sector away and i see that dustcloud that is behind rapido and he aggros,BOOM 5 hits dead

Well yesturday i'm running around altepa tryin to find rabao 'cause i don't have a map. out of the top left of the screen running across a hill i think i see someone fleeing. so i select them and notice that it's not a PC so i thought, how is a mob fleeing? so i check him "Impossible to gauge" ah that answers my question. but then brings up another... how the hell do you catch this speedster. so now i'm here checkin out posts on him.

I have found it its a 2 to 3 day spawn. Just incase anyone besides me wants to know lol

I've seen this guy plenty of times, its always fun to watch him speed by. I'd assume the best way (judging from all I've seen and heard) to fight him is with a large alliance (to divide up the damage dealt from 10k needles) with a good PLD or whoever who can kite a Sabotendar around until Cactrot links.
His drops are good, very good - and the title you get from him is one I'd gladly take over Roc Star or Kirin Captivator... cuz more people know Cactrot and that just would look damn cool if it said right on you that you killed him.
A question though... I always assumed that it was this dude who dropped the Optical Needle (Ammo Slot gear, All Jobs, gives ACC+1... only two have sold on Fenrir for 200k each.) ... so who drops that thing?

EDIT: Wait, I just had a brilliant idea, I'll look up the darn item myself.

My ls buddies were warping from fafnir and we decided to take him on after everyone had /smn or /bst
first time we ate a 18,000 needels but second time we all huddeled together and now i am Cactrot Desacelerador
Sweet fight and had a ton of fun

i typed a whole thing on how to fight him and how aoe is diveded by the pt members where to stand pt setup stoneskin utsusemi = evade exp lvl but i hit reset changes instead of edit msg <.< if you would like detailed info on this HNM msg me @ dans_legit@yahoo.com

last night i spotted catrot rapido while ported... It took me at least 30 min to figure out how to catch that bastard.

These are the follow tactics:
1. Rapido can outrun chocobo or flee
2. Widescan the bastard and find the cutting point
3. He doesn't aggro and even if you attacked him with ranged or wuteva, it won't stop
4. When I try shadowbinding him, I can't proceed the action. It would just say "You are too far away."
5. You must link attack a random Sabotender and place yourself at the crossing point of his road rage then he will start attacking you

Similar situation 16 ppl a few pets, got him. Lets just say he makes liberal use of his 10k needles. Party took 30k needles before the wipe started.

Got up. Got 300 tp. Get him again. Everyone unloads. By the time all the SCs went off, a few of the RNGs 2hr'd and he bit the dust.

No good drop. All we got was Cactus Root. yipee. >(.

To all the drgs out there go DRG/whm my Divine Seal Curaga2+ Superjump kept me and my party alive.

It says the Sabotendar hits him because the only way to stop this NM is to link it... therefore the chat log says that instead of the NM's name because the other cactuar is wailing on him.

And judging by the damage the normal cactuar is doing, im sure Rapido served Tarvos up something fierce XD.
