Just fought this guy as a 72 DRK/SAM along with my level 51 soothing healer NPC. Was going alright till my NPC left in the middle of the fight. I got him down to 18% and died. This ******* has alot of HP. He just outlasted me. Didn't really hit very hard, or have any great TP moves. Just takes too long to kill. I think I would have been fine if I'd had my NPC there the whole time. A couple Cures and I would have won.

Went in as a 65BST/WHM and decided to try this guy out. Unfortunately at this lvl, everything in temple agroes you if it can so it was a bit tricky. I noticed I didn't have much to work with around the area for pets and tried dragging him to the nearby exit and swap between pets there. Didn't work and I ended up zoning with about 200 HP.

Came back afterwards and rebuffed up, I think there was a 10-15 respawn timer as I kept getting no NM when i touched the Empty Canvas. After it came out again I decided to drag him towards the entrance of the temple and used Wespe, Opos, Toramas (I liked these guys the best) and after maybe about 20 of them it went down. Took roughly an hour to perform.

The quest is repeatable and you will get a key item: Final Fantasy Part2 for your second try which has an interesting blurb on it. I only got 3k from both trials though. >.<

I was really worried going into this fight, after reading all the posts, stating he has TONS of HP, and defense. I went as 75 rdm/drk (I still insist rdm/NIN is WAY overrated unless you plan to DoT spell a mob to death, like the jp taru that solos everything, which is just not my way of doign things). Anyway, I brought a nin along to tank it, but it turns out there was no need for it. I was using Joyeuse, and yes, it's a GREAT weapon, but dmg ratign is only dmg 35, I was doign about 110+ every hit, not counting "en" spell dmg. Vorpal blade consistently did 650+ to him, so I'd like to state that as long as you have decent DD gear, a 75RDM/drk can rape this things and it does not have a lick of defense! Fight lasted about 2min, if that, and I pulled hate in the first 10 seconds of the fight from normal melee, the nin never got it back, and he is a very good player too. Since I had hate the whole fight, I can honestly say rdm/drk can also easily tank this. He broke stoneskin near the very end of the fight, but was hitting me for about 10 a pop with phalanx up and would typically miss at LEAST 3/4's of the time.

I think a SKILLED rdm/drk can solo this in less than 5 min, and with joyeuse and very good gear, I'd say 3-4min. Yes, it has a lot of HP, but with decent gear and a good attack stat (360+, which is easy with capped sword and drk sub) this thing is a joke, and it's defense is non-existent. The trick is, just keep your enfeebling magic up on him (blind, para, slow, bio II, poison II) and you will have no problem whatsoever.
this guy XD

Solo'ed this as a 72 RDM/BLM. It was a LONG fight, I think about 25-30 minutes. I got it down to 1/2 HP before I used the first convert, and still had time for a second one. I kept stoneskin and blink up for a good portion of the fight, but for the most part my 'damage' came from WS and drain spells. I still had and used MP for Haste, Aquaveil, Ice Spikes, Enblizzard, etc. Debuffs stuck easily.

Got 36 exp from it (this was post the adjustment for soloing)

Took him down duo, 63 thf/nin(me) 67rdm/thf. As said below, has hp out the wing-wang, and very good def as well. Darksteel kukri+1 was hitting 25-30, Dancing Edge ~300. Low to average accuracy, watching him attack me (211 evasion skill) was like watching a lvl 58 xp off toramas. But when he did get through... ouch 100-150 per hit, ws ~100 cept for the AOE ones those were ~50. All in all, a fun fight but long, daggers vs a NM golem just ain't fun.
I'd say a 65+ thf could take him solo depending on bloody bolt proc. Don't know what they do on him I didn't have any on me at the time.

I just killed this thing solo as a 68 RDM/DRK and let me tell you, it's hard. I went to the Temple after finishing Angelica's quest and receiving the key item "Final Fantasy Part II", which I figured would be placed in the painting and that I'd be done with it for good. Not so! The golem popped again, and I was forced to deal with it once more.. but without 5 others helping me as was the case the first time I did the quest.

I ran to the entrance of the room (as that was furthest from the Tonberries) and engaged it there. It was hitting me hard.. 70~80 damage WITH Phalanx up. I didn't have any DEF+ food on me, but I always carry Meat Mithkabobs so I ate one of those. I made the mistake at the start of the fight of trying to keep 'extra' buffs on (Haste, Shock Spikes, Enthunder, etc.), when those just caused me to waste MP faster. 10 minutes into the fight and it's lifebar only budged about 30% down. I kept talking to my LS during this time, thinking how it was gonna kill me, but I was determined to hold off as long as I could before I would use my Instant Warp.

I made use of my Arcane Circle ability to intimidate the golem when I Converted; indeed, another 10 minutes passed and I had to Convert again.. with only a Blink instead of a Stoneskin since my MP had dropped so low. I wound up doing nothing but Cure III/Phalanx/Stoneskin for the latter part of the fight, cause he hits so hard. At the very end of the fight, my SMN friend Shirokaze showed up and helped me finish it off; Ramuh's Thunder IV barely budged it's lifebar, despite doing pretty good damage (I had half my MP at this point, so I could have finished it off, it was just a matter of being tired of doing so).

Anyways, nearly half an hour and 25 EXP later and I'm victorious, having solo'd probably the meanest NM I've killed by myself thus far. The Sea Horror didn't hit as hard as this guy, but the fact that it was Arcana (and thus my SJ had some merit against it), and was slow to attack.. are the only reasons I was able to solo it for such a long period of time. The NM doesn't have good evasion and doesn't swing fast, but it's defense is very high and it didn't seem to have a problem actually hitting me even when Blinded. A RDM/NIN could probably take him out a bit more easily, but the fight would most likely take even longer. And if you're spending that much Shihei.. the pitiful 3000 gil reward for the quest won't be worth it.

Crazy me is actually thinking of going back and trying to take out this guy again; I'm apparently of just the right level where the Tonberries in the room are easy prey but don't aggro. ^^

should have done more research before doing thhis quest
could have turned disastrous for my friends drg AF 3 quest
didnt realize Trompe L'Oeil was was NM
i was freaked out when it popped in front of me after touching the painting
luckily, we had a well balanced and capable pt
11 ppl ranging from lvl 55 to 70
nonetheless, we ended up killing it
i was shocked at first becuase we were fighting 3 tonberries at the time i spanwed it
but after we killed the tonberries and regained control,
Trompe L'Oeil turned out to be fairly easy monster
i was the low man at 55war/27nin
it did hit me for 100dmg with protect 3 on though
it likes to spam AOE attacks that stun the pt
i would also say it has low evasion and high defense for my 55war
it also has quite a bit of hp
took a few minutes to kill it

Yes he is correct in that translation...of you literally translate it, it means "Mistake of the eye" but ive seen the murals or paintings of which they speak...they are really cool. anyways i think its a great NM name as well...much better than the Orcish names We sandorians are use to :P

It means "trick of the eye", it's a description of the painting style where a mural looks like a real window, or when a plant is painted to look as if it's crawling up a wall.

Yes, this is a french name ... my opinion, it's not a beautiful name for a NM.

This NM is involved in "Final Fantasy" quest that starts from Angelica in Windurst Waters. After talking to Angelica, go to kazham and talk to one of the Chieftainess' RNG bodyguard you'll be in a cutscene regarding how Angelica wants to hang her Final Fantasy painting in Temple of Uggalepih.

The quest involves several running back and forth from Kazham and Temple of Uggalepih. The end reward is 3,000gil.

No information on this guy yet, so I'll just give you my little bit if you decide to fight him. I killed him with just three people, all level 65ish. One WAR, one RDM, and me, a BRD. He was very easy, but of course had a lot of HP. He used a few AoE golem effects including bind, so make sure you get in position for him quickly before he nails you to the floor.

And, since this page doesn't yet say so, I'll mention that he's for the 'Matter of Taste' quest from Kazham. The point you spawn him at is right next to the room you open for the Paintbrush of Souls, so if you decide to camp the key for that, make sure everybody has this quest and you can all get an extra 7k gil while you're at it.
