I rarely post here anymore but I wanted to share my experience with this pair of NMs.

I took the advice of the previous posters and pulled only one mob, I chose the shadow because I just thought it would be cool to kill him. I was 58RDM/29BLM at the time, buffed up really nicely, and pulled this dude a little bit away from the skellie. It was a long fight, he spammed Dimensional Death like there was no tomorrow and he Invincibled, I was smart enough not to cast anything on him while he wasn't taking any damage and used the time to cure myself.

Had stoneskin up nice and new when I converted, cured myself up and continued the fight, but my MP was dropping a lot faster than his HP. I will make a note, next time I solo something kind of difficult, to bring some juices or something so I don't use up all my MP refreshing myself, because I had to use a LOT of MP just to kill him, and because of constant weapon switching there wasn't much use of a weapon skill. ; ;

I thought it was all over when I had no MP left and he used Dimensional Death (again!) but I had 89 when he finished his WS, I just continued to pound on him, thank goodness his accuracy was sh*t because if he had landed more hits I'd have been screwed. Ended up with 19 HP and no MP because (unfortunately) I managed to use up all my MP curing myself and didn't pay attention to where my MP was so I could cast up another refresh.

I'm glad I beat him, but I'm thinking it should have been easier ... I never solo so this was a good lesson for me, especially for when I need to take on Maat.
If in doubt, ignore the skeleton

Just thought I would post this to anyone who might be right on the edge of being able to solo this pair of NMs.

If you cast Sneak/use Silent Oil before you pop them, they will not aggro you when they spawn. Move a suitable distance away, and pull the Shadow with a ranged attack or magic. Most ( but not all ) undead mobs don't link, and these are no exception. Once the Shadow is dead, wait a few seconds and the skeleton will despawn. Click the ??? and you'll be able to proceed with the rest of the quest, just as if you'd killed them both. Tested this theory myself as a 55 PLD, worked like a charm.

Interestingly enough, I tried to explain this method to a friend when we went to kill the NMs for him. He apparently didn't understand, and received aggro from both mobs. He ( 50 MNK ) and I were able to kill them easily- both the Shadow and the skeleton missed too much to be of any concern. ^^

Solo'd as a 50PLD, sneak and popped the NM's, Flash pulled the skel and killed him very easy. Drop a yag and waited for mp to recover. Went to kill the PLD, and he's not there. Checked the ??? and got the cut sceen. So yea, you only need to kill one, if that. I wanted to fight the big guy too. :(
Not too hard.

Started this quest a long time ago but just recently finished it. One of the best non-mission storylines I've seen. Anyway I fought these guys as a RDM60/BLM30 with little trouble. Started by buffing myself like crazy PnS, SS, Refresh, Enfire, Haste, Phalanx, and a partridge in a pear tree. Started first off Silencing both and started chipping away at the shadow. When he Invincibled I switched over to the Skeleton for a moment then switched back after a bit. All in all not an extreamly difficult fight. The skeleton's scythe did a repectable amount of damage, however, so I needed to recast Stoneskin a couple of times.

Soloed these two the other day on 60RDM/25NIN.

It was very, very easy, I probably could have done it at a much lower level. The skeleton CAN be silenced, I didn't land it on the Ka (only tried once though, his casts weren't very troublesome).
If you fight these two kill the Ka first, so the Dimensional Deaths are out of the way while you have plenty of resources.
Keep the skele silenced and you should have no problem with this.

I underestimated these two at first. I went in and cast a couple -aga spells...well it didn't do too much to these guys and it sucked my mana up so I had to zone.
So I went back, clicking the ??? didn't respawn them so I logged out and back in, and it worked. This time I just meleed them down, using my MP for a few debuffs and heals.
And much like other shadow monsters, this one will use Dimensional Death when you use a WS, so only use a WS after he uses dimensional death, on my first attempt i forgot this and got hit by DD for 190 >.<
barely killed him

It took a while but we didnt have much trouble
Lullaby can sleep undeads, but they seem more resistant than other mobs

Dunno why so many people are having trouble with this, I watched over my brother's shoulder as his 54 RDM soloed it with ease. Just keep stoneskin/phalanx/blink up and it's patheticly easy.

I just took this guy on as a 60 Bard / 30 Whm. Wasn't too tough, just required skillful use of Horde Lullaby and stoneskin. ^^
It uses Invincible about halfway through the fight. I just kept beating away at it till it died, and kept the skelly asleep, so I wasn't taking damage from two mobs at once. Thumped him good with 300% TP Spirits Within, then took out the skelly when he died. All in all a fun battle. ^^
nm guy

the shadow if i rememer correctly didnt hit him once.....it took about 3 mins to go down of none stop hacking away (cant remember if he actually casted a spell (the pld i mean))

now ive finally figured out what the NM was for, ive got the quest myself. me and my freinds are gona kick his *** (and the skeleton)

oh yeh they are lvl 53 whm and 53 mnk and i....36 mnk (would go as DRK if i hadnt sold my equip hehe) wish us luck =D
Aspir
# Aug 20 2004 at 9:33 PM Rating: Decent
In case you're wondering why you can't just Aspir the "un"living sh*t out of this "dynamic duo" It's because they are undead.

Just like the Drain spell, Aspir is entirely un-effective against undead.

And, I believe the undead have high resistances to sleep. Maybe an Elemental Seal + Sleep II would work? If not, I'd just give up on the sleeping at that point...bind one, silence it, then lure the other mob away and recast silence whenever necessary....that is...if they can be silenced.

All in all these mob's sound like a pretty tough fight.

Me being lvl 33, just having recieved this quest (I had lvl 9 fame when i got it, so I'm not sure what lvl fame is required for it) I'm really looking forward to this fight, I'm gonna just shout in sandy for help when it comes time to fight these mobs. (Most obviously a lvl 33war/mnk can't solo it..hahaha
solo?

A level 50 BLM, and a lvl 51 WHM could not kill him. Resisted every spell, including Cure 4s. We managed to get him down to 1/4 life. However this was after a full heal cause we had to zone after killing the first mob. I believe once you activate the ??? you have untill 4:00 before he'll vanish, so you can rezone and heal. Using both 2hrs we managed to kill the Skeleton, but this guy was only down by about 1/5. Good Luck, My guess on level is mid 50's. Prolly arround 54-55
