I was finishing up the purple belt quest so I could do the Brown Belt quest earlier today, killing Tremor Rams as they popped. I'd been doing it on and off for 2 days without much luck. The Tremor Ram spawn time is exactly 10 minutes from the last death, by the way, not 12 as you may have heard. I'm told that 2 Rams spawn at once, but I never actually saw a second one.

Anyway, the next spawn time arrived, I hit wide scan, and sure enough - there's freakin' Steelfleece Baldarich, the rare spawn of the rare spawn of the rams I was hunting. The worst part was that, being level 60, killing this guy wasn't out of the question for me - but my linkshell was almost completely devoid of life at the time. Unable to put together a party to kill him, all I could do was follow him around and poke him until I gave up, warped to Jeuno, and shouted that Steelfleece was spawned. Once a group had killed it, I returned to my camp.

Now here's the interesting thing. I'd planned to take a break for a while, since the Rampaging Ram surely wasn't going to spawn for a while after this. But, having nothing to do, I kept at it. And amazingly, just 30 minutes after Steelfleece's death (or 3 spawn cycles), Rampaging Ram appeared. I killed it quickly and was on my way.

I think that's a helpful bit of information: Rampaging Ram and Steelfleece Baldarich can spawn very shortly after one another. This might also mean that RR can spawn twice within a short period of time, but I don't know that for sure.
Really?

Is this guy really an NM? I mean i never had killing him (granted i did avoid him till like level 35) but he seems to be a placeholder to the real NM (i think steelfleece) just like how lambert appears instead of bloodtear. Any input would be nice

Edit: i realized i was thinking of the tremor ram sorry

A WHM friend and I had just Teleported to the crag to look for cards for the 2004 Winter event.
I was just getting off the steps at the crag and there he was.
My favorite methof of hunting these days as a RDM is to sleep my target so I can buff up. It worked like a charm and I spent the next few doing just that then slapped a couple of enfeebles on him. The whm was off somewhere else so I had no assistance, but with blink, stoneskin and phalanx damage was not an issue.
It did take a few minutes, and I had no idea that I was actually fighting my first real NM. I wondered why all these people were standing back and watching.
anyway, the upshot is I have one of my horns, and I guess I better go find the other one.
Will i kill it???

very doubtful, around lvl 35 you should have a shot, but that's a guess. At lvl 40 you should be able to kill it safely.

Should be no problem, I killed it as a level 32 War/Whm (this was back when I was an idiot, I am a 55 pld/war now).

I think i could have soloed this(with 2hr) as 32mnk/13rng. I used hundred fists, but didnt have focus/dodge ready at the time. It decided to use petribreath when it had just under half its hp left and took me to half my hp. I invited a lv 50+ rng to help, she fired a couple of 200dmg arrows, and hit it a couple of times with knives and it died. If i had 16war subbed and a mithkabob+focus/dodge, i might have done it solo, maybe.

edit: i never got a weapon skill on it either, that might have helped

I was camping rams for fun when i was a 41 thf/rng and i was in contest with a Japanese friend of mine. I never heard of the Rampaging ram and when he went for the tremor, i went for rampaging (fight sounded bigger). Uwas tikkled pink when i saw that huge thing and i got it. I was fighting for the fun of the fight. I didnt even know it was a NM. But i was dieing quickly pleh. Thankfully 3 rdm, a drk, and whm came, healed me and cheered me on. I beat that Ram sensless then. I got the horn and didnt know what to do with it. I have it in my storage and someone said it was a rare/ex and that i needed it for a quest...Which quests is that??
Spawn time

Has anyone figured out the time or range that "Rampaging Ram" spawns? I have been to the highlands several times and have only found the Tremor Rams. Unfortunately, as a monk I can't wide scan for the bugger. Thanks.

Ok so the day i saw this wasnt really so bad, i'd found stray mary ( well, my LS ranger had found it, i ran into the fight latish to help with finishing her off)

At the time, Me and my ranger buddy were level 24's just slaughtering sheeps for fun really, and the odd ram, when we saw one. After a few hours of killing plain old treamour rams, we see rampaging ram, me being a kinda curious guy, decides to get a closer look, only to find out that the git aggro's.....i experienced high pressure hits, then sudden.....death, and so did the ranger, we see in the distance a warrior running along thinking he could kill this ram, myself having done pretty much no damage to it, the warrior being level 30 was skrewed heavily, he died ( very funny to watch, as he leveld down, teehee)

We got raised by a whm ( who wasnt there at the time) and he asked what happened, so we told him and he asked to join our party to go look for it, so we invited him, and the warrior aswell. We went hunting this ram again, we never found it....Untill later, just me n the ranger again, this time with another level 24 warrior who was in our LS also.

"Guys! Its on scan again!"
"where?!, Where?!"
"Right behind you!"

Yep, there it was, right behind us.

Aggro again, but this time, we ALL had our 2hr, so i used mine, then the other warrior used his after mine wore off, and then, the ranger used his eagle eye shot, mega damage on that baby, by that time we thought we had it, we were doing VERY well on this ram. A whm appears ( i knew he was WHM cuz of his gear) He was one of those that lets you die when fighting a NM then hits it with a VERY weak staff once and kills it, thats exactly what he did...one hit....if i wasnt KO'd i wuda been saying ALOT of things to him, things i can't say here....

But now....level 30 warrior i whent for revenge ( n00by? yes) hunting rams i was, only to see it on scan, saw it was engaged with a level 45 thf, he was getting a beating, so he invites me to party, i gladly accept and cane this ram....i was ever so pleased, rampaging horn for me!, now to get the lumbering horn....

Just spotted this guy near the Crag of Dem for the very first time! And you know what? He fell to me. ^_^

I was just out after Power-Levelling some parties in the Dunes, casually stalking Tremor Rams where I saw them, and I saw one near the Crag. So I ran over, when it came within attacking range, I realized it was Rampaging Ram. Assuming it was a lv 40 NM, (I had been wrongly informed, it seems.) I attacked it regardless as a lv 32 PLD/WAR, I figured "Meh... I have a good exp buffer, I wanna see what it's like". I'm not entirely sure I could have taken it on my own, as towards the end I had some Cure I's thrown on me by a passing BLM. Being a PLD and not the best at dishing damage, the fight lasted nearly 6 minutes. RR missed a lot, and when he did hit it was for similar damage to what I was dishing out. Everything went swimmingly until I started running low on MP to heal myself, which is when I started panicking a little, as he was only down to 1/2 health. But for the most part, my high VIT ensured he couldn't finish me quickly. So the BLM threw a handful of Cure's my way and I was grateful. ("Feng", who is now A-OK in my books. ^_^) I only really became concerned when he used Max-HP Down to reduce my HP max to 135!!

In the end, I used "Fast Blade" after he'd used "Rage" and flattened him with 167 damage. I got the Rampaging Horn and a Ram's Horn, and even if I hadn't I'd still have been happy to get to beat up an NM I'd only laid eyes on once. ^_~

I've seen Rampaging twice now. The first time it was claimed by that infernal THF/RNG that always "Flees" to the Rams and claims them. I don't farm when he's there. It's a waste of time, as you will never reach them in time. Grr...

The second time, I had been farming Rams as my 34 RDM with a friend, a level 20 WAR. Having Ranger sub on, I see Rampaging Ram on Widescan and dash over to it, seeing that it's claimed by a 27 WAR. After it hits him the first time for about 120 dmg he tried to run away from it, realising he'd mistook it for a regular Tremor Ram (it's the same size, if not slightly bigger).

I shout to him and heal him, get the Hate and it starts attacking me, so I Blind it and invite the WAR to our party. It's clear after about a minute that we're in trouble (had no time to Stoneskin/Protect myself, so I /sh for help and debuff as much as I can before I'm Petrified by Petribreath. By this point, the 27 WAR is dead, my friend's scared to hit it and it's battering me to near-death. At 28hp left, I shout to my friend to Provoke it and 2-hour. He does, it hits him once for about 160dmg and he manages to hit it twice before it falls dead...

I was shaking! So worried I'd die and de-level, but it turned out okay in the end. We got 5 Ram Skins, 1 Ram Horn and Rampaging Horn. I love helping people, but I love killing Rams even more!

Been hunting this guy for about two weeks. I never could find him and its because I was looking inthe wrong spots. That map is off, no one I talk to has ever see it spawn north of the crag. I spoted it WSW of the crag in H-7 just north of the southernmost point noted on the map. I wish now that I had taken a pic. I was just so excited to finally find him, much less fight and kill him.

So how did the fight go? Well, I had been told by many that attempting the R.Ram at 32 was suicide. Especially since I was subbing Rng for Widescan, loosing Berserk and the War's Defense Bonus. I had more faith in my Mnk's DDing abliities though. Hundred Fists has got to be, at least in my opinion, the finest 2hr ability in the game. So I roll up on him, blow HF, hit my macro for Dodge/Focus, hit him with a 200% One Inch Punch, and down a Pear Au Lait to cover my ***. HF ends just in time for one more OIP another set of blows from my Impact Knucks, and hes done for. Fight is over, I get the Horn, and some other goodies. Still had about 1/3 of my HP too. Perfect timing too, because 5 minutes later I got DCed.

Today camping Mary I see this on widescan. Didnt have any background info on him so I ask a 50 WHM for help. He said he tried fighting it but lost twice and had to tele-dem himself to get away. Im like ok, we ally. (I was 30 WAR 1 RNG at thetime) and call in another 50 PLD and WHM. We whipped em. Overkill to the 100th degree. Got his horn and lotsa skins. Being the lowest atm I got the skins. woot!

Solo
# Nov 18 2004 at 10:28 AM Rating: Decent
A 30RNG/15THF can solo this thing without too much trouble, I just did.
The key is Sleep bolts. I have a post under Lumbering Horn describing my encounter with Lumbering Lambert (twice now!). I have to say, Rampaging ram is much harder because he likes to take 2 swings at once; bad news for you Utsusemi people. I tried the samme approach as i used with Lumbering Lambert twice before - that is: Sleep bolt, back up, Bloody bolt, Sleep bolt, back up, bloody bolt, sleep bolt, etc... With rampaging ram however, this is very hard to do. I got taken down to 53hp and finally had enough, i just stood as far away as possible while constantly shooting sleep bolt after sleep bolt until he finally toppled.

I never used Eagle Eye Shot or Barrage. If you do, you will wake him from his slumber and he will get a swing or two in before you can hit him with another sleep bolt. If you want to speed up the fight you could eagle eye shot in the beginning then immediately sleep him. The problem with barrage and sharpshot half way through is that it gives him a chance to use one on of his abilities. There are a few nasty things he does to poor unknowing people... oh i've heard horror stories. Although Bloody bolts did slightly more damage than holy bolts (when you figure in the drain effect), I don't recommend using them for the same reason as barrage and eagle eye shot.

So please just take my advice and sleep him. You will thank me when you're walking away with the horn rather than lying face down under his front hoof.

hmm

Ok I killed Lambert solo as a 30 mnk/1rng. Easy fight! I camped this guy for 2 hours and nothing! I killed more tremor rams than needed! He just would not pop for me. Is there a GOOD spot to find him? Is by the crag the best place?

I beat this a while ago as WHM41/RNG01. I hunt around Konschtat a lot and finally saw him unclaimed. Probably would have been easier if I had BLM subbed, but I beat it anyway. Blink, Stoneskin and Protect II before battle, used the rest of my MP for damage and debuffing, hit Benediction when I was down to about 50 HP and I lived with 86 HP left. He tried 3 times to use his special ability, but it missed all 3 times. Whew. ^^;

well i just experienced the 1-hr or so respawn time. id say this is rare but at least i can say that i saw rampaging ram about 1 hr after it's last spawn time in the highlands.

also i have gotten the ram horn drop every time i've fought it. if it's not 100% drop rate, it is very high rate at least.

Ran into this guy today working on SMN quest. Wasn't going to fight him because I thought he was a much higher lvl. LS members told me to go for it so I did. Didn't have 2 hour avaialable and I had subbed BLM for warp :< so i just went at it. Used absorb STR & VIT. He was only hitting me for 15-30 damage, never did petrify or bleet which was fortunate. I beat him but I was down to about 250/790 HP (not sure if I was completely full when I began the fight). Only got the Rampaging Horn and 2 skins... but it was much more fun than fighting another Tremor Ram :/

I'm from Bastok so I had the rams quest for a while now. I first beat rampaging ram as a 41+ whm/rng, wearing divine breastplate and using AF1 maul weapon. Before debuffing, I was afraid I was going to lose. Then I remembered, just because I don't debuff the elementals and tremor rams, doesn't mean I can't debuff rampaging ram. So I just had to debuff it then it was a baby after that. Got the horn drop.

Flash forward many many months, I was a lvl 47 whm in lvl 1 gear. Hunting for Lambert still. Finally some guy let me know he was up, and we both felt concern that we couldn't beat it alone, so we agreed to join up. So here is a 47 whm with just the bare MP (no MP gear) and a 33 thf. We both got hit by the 10% special attack about mid-way through the fight. But really Lambert wasn't hurting too bad otherwise. We finally beat it with both of us in the red HP and me in red MP.

So for all of you who wish to lay claim to these two rams, you can do it!

Maybe because of the most recent patch, but I sat here waiting for him to spawn for over 3 hours. So don't expect a 1 hour spawn time. This was my first kill.

I picked him up on widescan very, very close to the teleport pad.
