It is a random spawn out of a selection of crawlers. It appears either at the dead end of the river, at the hinge thing, or along the road. I've killed it 3 times, dropped the cape twice, and seen him killed 4 or 5 times. The second cape has yet to sell, though, so I'm still poor.

I was walking home from Tahgroni after a lousy day of farming with my 35 BLM and what do you know, there is Spini! I got so nervous, and I cast Water II which did about 150 damage and then Aero II which did about 180 damage. I am guessing it has somewhere around 300 HP. Pretty tough for level 12, eh? Anyway, all I got was a freakin spool of silk thread. After many curses I walked home in shame, thinking about the 20k I could have had. /sigh

Sell it in Bastok, those suckers paid 30k for mine.
If you get the cape and sell it, can you get it again? I'd think you would but since I got the cape and sold it, i've killed him 4 more times and he only drops silk.

Ok. The Spipi doesnt ONLY spawn at night, it doesnt ONLY spawn by the river, and it doesnt ONLY spawn if you kill certain crawlers. The spawn is random like any other nm. Although I have had better luck by killing everything. (bees, mandys, gobs, AND crawlers.) And by camping the Spipi the past couple days I have made over 85k. And I've only seen him 4 times and he dropped the cape only once. The loot I get from crawlers and gobs make as much money as the cape itself. Not to mention stealing from Mandragoras. (Ball of Saruta Cotton) And BTW, he's only spawned for me down by the river, up by the road, and right infront of the ruin. Good luck and have a nice day.

Spipi is my friend. He let me kill him for his cape oh so many times. It's an easy hunt in Bismarck.

Hiya everyone, can someone tell me, if u have either of the treasure hunter abilities, do u have a higher chance of getting the rare item dropped by NM or no?

Hi to all that said that there is always Jp players camping at night, here are some good news. Last night i got Spiny Spipi to spawn at around 9:45, killed him with my level 12 dragoon and all i got was a lousy silk thread(barely made if it wasn't for Raiden he would have owned me). I'll camp him tonight till i get that cape then sell the damn thing to buy monk armor. So whoever said that he only spawns at night is wrong i should have taken a pic of him. he mostly spawns when u kill the two crawlers at I-7 and are killing either a Giant Bee or Mandragora. Anyway good luck. if you don't want to have that many campers then come to Caitsith server, mostly Americans in there 24-7 JP only around 11PM Pacific-2am East. so before that time should be perfect to killing any NM as most Amercans only care about leveling and not NMs. Good Luck all

Woke up yesterday and logged in right where he spawn, saw him at (k-6) on that map up there south of the river. He dropped a silk then. Then when I got home from work I camped him for 2 and a half hours and got him at the south western corner of (J-6) and he dropped a slik and a mist silk cape! I'm going to use it till 30 (27 now and I took spiny like i was fighting an old lady for her purse) then sell the thing...If anyone is on cerberus I'll sell it to you for a 2000 gil allakhazam discount!!

I was actually just going around E. Saru killing crawlers for their silks... happened to see spiny... Attacked him.. killed him.. got dropped silk & mist cape on my first try...

I tried to check Spini and it said that his strength is imesurable. I am lvl 15, i'm just wondering if that is what all notorius monsters say when you check them?
They all say that...you should be able to take him. Have some buffs though
I am on the shiva server--True i have killed spiny 3 times over the course of a real time 5 day period (no i did not camp it for 5 days). BUT every time i was there-- there were at least 7-10 japanese players camping this. I am getting mad. On the shiva server--we have an abundance of japanese campers. Even if its like 5 in the morning their time. So then i went to go and give the Valkrum Emperor a shot. There were 6-8 japanese campers as well. I went to go see about Lizzy. There were 2 other american players and 6 japanese camping. Do you see a trend?
Also to add that they do see spawns 1-2 secs before us since the server is in Japan.
Very frustrating.

lol i doubt the ping difference is going to be 1-2 secs... it would be unplayable at that point maybe if you have a 28k modem but then you shouldnt be playing online games. The reason you see more jpns campers is cause they have been on longer. Plus if they beat you to it its cause some are freakishly skilled... i know a guy w/ 5lvl 75 jobs i wouldnt want to compete with him for anything.
hunted this mob for 3 RL days. Tried various combos to make him spawn:
Killed All MOBS
Killed All Crawlers
Killed No MOBS
None of these seemed to matter though i did notice that if i killed all mobs then regular crawlers spawned more often.
As a result i fought him 4 times with 20thf/8whm. Dropped silk every time no cape. :-(
However from killing all the mobs and collecting the drops I got 2 stacks of silk 3x beehive chips and more gob mail/helm/masks than i knew what to do with.
End result I raised enough money to just buy the cape.
On Bismark server i was pretty much the only one there. Occasionally people would run in run out noone was camping it like i was.

just killed spiny on Seraph. spawned in J6 at the end of the river.. i had been workin up other weapon skills in the area and couln't beleive my eyes when i saw him.
nobody around campig him. i just walked up and beat the snot out of him.. :D

I know for 100% how to get NMs. First is to check the map area they appear in. Kill all the mobs of the same type (crawlers to get Spiny). The NM will RANDOMLY spawn in the mobs slot with a 1/32 frequency. You just have to keep killing the mobs of the same type and cross your fingers. There is no special time they appear, and that is why it seems to take anywhere from 15 mins to 4 hrs to spawn. I have seen spiny as many as three times in 2 hours and then once it never appeared in 4 hours (RL time). There are several spawn slots where spiny appears. Anything in I-6, I-7, J-6, J-7, or K-6 where a crawler spawns, is where spiny will spawn. I know this is 100% accurate on how to get NMs. If you don't believe me then sit there without killing the mobs of that type and see it it ever spawns.

ok i fought him and got him down to like 8% health and he got a critical hit and killed me!!?!?!?!?!?!!!?@!?!?!?!!?!?!?? what did i do wrong? besides full health?

He is not tough but has high attack. I beat at level 13 whm / 6 blm, but had cast many enfeebling spells. It is safe to fight at 15+. But remember that the higher your level, the lower the frequency of rare drops.

Okay.... lets get this straight does it matter? if you spend awile in this area you're bound to get a cape after a long time anyways so just hunt a little and get lucky... and as for the only one(1) cape at a time... i dont think that matters.. Just sell it.. and then go get another. geezum peets

Rare u can have only one and it will drop if u have one and some in ur party dosen't have this i learned this from bernie.

I hunted the Spiny on Ramuh server, and killed it twice. They were about a 45 min interval. There doesn't seem to be any timer, or palceholder monster. On time it was in front of the tower, and the next was by the stream. The locations were J-7 and J-6. NO one was camping it. the second try, got the cloak. And, once you sell it, the chance DOES NOT go down of getting the drop again, it's just as random as before

Both the times I've seen it spawn it was on I-7, right in front of the river and next to this one rock formation. My friend saw it the other day but I'm not sure of the location.
It dropped nothing for me and my friend, but when a random guy came in and killed it from right in front of me after I'd been waiting there -two hours- (camping it on Bismarck isn't the best idea) he got a cape from it. Crummy luck.

i hunted this thing on the Sylph server.. first day i did it with a thief lvl 22 and me lvl 22 blm. the thief saw another guy kill it once.. and that was all the luck we had. spent bout 3 1/2 hours that day... next day i get on and walk round for bout 20 minutes and then he spawns, nobody around and i just killed it.. got the cape =). id say this is a really good NM to camp becuase not many other people camp it (at least on my server) and it drops a pretty good item. Also in the process of trying to get the monster to spawn and killin a bunch of crawlers.. i got a stack of silks =).

I tried camping this with one other person for 4 RL hours and it never spawned until I said ***** it and starting walking away. he spawned right in front of me (didnt get cape) we were killing everything in sight and it never spawned, so whatever is up with it its not a 2 hour spawn it sems to be completely random. Oh and once you get ht ecape once, the chance of getting it again goes down sharply as with most NM's

The chance does not go down...the cape is a Rare item, meaning each char can only have one of them at a time. If you already have a Mist Silk Cape (in your vault, storage, inventory, equipped...doesn't matter where) then it will not drop for you again unless you are grouped with someone who does not have it or until you get rid of the one you have. You can test this with any Rare item...2 Leaf Mandragora Buds will prove this easily.
I had 2 buds, one in inv and one was dropped but couldnt get as it said i dont meet req, it happens.

is it me but do ranger have to brag about there damage?...i am a ranger so it is kiinda embarresing. anyways i was going to windy for the first time and it was near a rock near a river and i didnt know that is was a nm so i killd it....it didnt drop but i found out that the travelers mantle droped by the crypt ghost is better and easyer to get.

lol i felt like just checking the area out quickly when bam, Spiny Spipi was there infront of me Location was I-7. and yes i did get the cape :D

hey guys, just got this guy, 24k..ahh.. .
anyways, it took me 1:30 hours, the guy dropped
the cape + calculus + 3 silks!!

That's exactly where i'm finding him now, at the end of the river at J-6 K-6 area. I used to find him up on the road south of there, to the west of the tower but he seems to be moving around on me. I was leveling my bard at the end of the river where no one ever goes and i cast a song on him...didn't notice it was THE spiny spipi, so i'm dead, so i haul out my lvl 30whm and come back for revenge mwahahah! but sadly no drop.
