I was fighting one of these on the manaclipper when I noticed it was resisting a lot of my spells (60 blm). Aero III however ripped through it pretty well (480 dmg).
Maybe these things are weak to wind, or maybe I just lucked out and the 3 times I cast it, it was out of its shell.
I killed one of these on the manaclipper solo easy. :) Picked away at it with carby for quite awhile using poison nails when it popped out of it's shell. Then I pulled out shiva and a properly timed Double Slap all but killed it, bit of melee and it was dead. :) fun ^^ no drop though, whatever it's supposed to drop :)
Adjust the resolution of menus. The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting. If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.
Yes but carry antidotes or sub WHM for poisona, if the poison sticks you will die without it. At 62 it usually misses me, but it occasionally lands. Start the battle with Sneak Attack and after that build enough TP for Dancing Edge, then let him have it when he comes out of his shell. When he's shelled you won't be able to damage him enough to counteract his regen and he'll slowly build some of his HP back. Usually takes 2 or 3 DEs when he's out of his shell to finish him.
This mob is best duoed, not soloed. A 60+ THF/whatever and RDM/WHM can tear though these things like crazy and is the ideal setup for dealing with them. The THF can provide the spike damage for when it's out of it's shell better than any other job (you can do a damage spike every time it pokes its head out rather than having to wait for TP like everyone else) and the RDM/WHM can dispel it's regen when it shells and cast poisona (he should also enaero his weapon, these things are very weak to air) You also get TH2 to help with the drop.

I love this thing! I was on the Manaclipper last night as my 36WHM with a 52BLM, and when it spawned, he cast freeze on it, it barely dents it, and the BLM kept nuking it, but to no avail, eventually, I had him invite me, and I just kept regen, barwatera, and barpoisonra on him and kept him cured up, we docked before it or we died ^_^ Then we rode a couple more times with a 53PLD I think, hoping it would spawn again, but it didn't.
I got hit by one of the AoE attacks. !5 HP a tick. I wasted all my MP on curing myself, and it didn't wear until 77 HP. Had I been a different job I'd have been dead.
Needless to say the high level dude apologized profusely (no whms on the boat)

yes they are easily charmed, they suck as pets though, they won't go in their shells as pets and the only time they use their poison move is when you do sic ability.
bst can farm these faster than any other job except blm or rdm though, i was killing them faster at lvl 40 than lvl 75 melee damage dealers. simply charm it, send it at a clot or something and let it get hate then use heel, when they're out of their shell they're wimps, right before the clot kills it use leave, charm clot and finish it off.
You'll be better off making poison potions, since this guy seems to poison every 10 seconds people might not bother with antidote :P. Btw from what I could tell the poison was 15 hp per 3 seconds.
We had a party of 3 30s and it checked tough. It killed us easy it dosn't do that much damage itself but its AOE is nasty. we called for help and a 70 MNK came and took it out in 5 hits but we were all poisoned and the WHM was out of MP so we all died. fourtnatly there was a high level RDM there to raise us
very nasty things, they have a massive auto-regen. if it checks easy prey, you won't have a chance, it will regen faster than you can attack >< it also really enjoys doing it's little poison AoE
These are pretty easy to kill if you figure out there pattern.
They like to hide under the shell, letting you do terriable damage... But once everyon 30 seconds or so, he'll pop out of the shell. You can tell he did this by either standing in front of him and seeing his eyes, or standing behind him. (While under his shell, he won't turn around)
As soon as he sticks his head out, skillchain him. He has very little health overall (~1000), so it's not that hard to kill.
p.s: the poison is more nasty then most realise. I was at full HP, and on the death shot on one of these, it landed a poison on me. I went from 1015hp to 27, and it was still ticking (Had to instant warp + MH at 200hp just to live)
I agree. I found these guys to be really fun to fight, actually. Just wait for them to stick their nose out of their shell, then blast them with whatever weaponskill you have handy. They're especially fun for thieves, since they don't move at all when in shell-mode. You can keep running behind them and doing sneak attack each minute =).
I imagine the poison would have been far more annoying if I didn't have a blm/whm on the boat with me.
o.O I HATE these things . . . I wandered around Bibiki Bay with 2 others from my shell. We found the Manaclipper dock and waited for the next one. On board, we saw one of these things. Not knowing any better, we attacked . . . O.O -they have a very nasty poison AoE (20+ a tick) -first time I had to throw Curaga around in a fight We beat this thing . . . I was almost out of mp, and the other two were in yellow/red health. ><
