General InformationLottery spawn of the Damselflies that spawn from (D-8) through (F-8) in Valkurm Dunes PH Info from SmokesalotThe PH is the mob the prevents the NM from spawning until it is killed. In the case of the Valkurm Emperor, it is one of the Damselflies that roams about Whitesands beach in Valkurm Dunes. What a kagillion people refuse to take into their minds is that VE has ONE placeholder, and that's it. Go to the beach with Widescan ability, and position yourself at the peak of the sandhill just northwest of the pack of trees in the middle of the beach. Pull up WS, and you'll see something like this. Damselfly Goblin Mugger Goblin Leecher Goblin Gambler Sniper Sniper Sniper Sniper Damselfly<~~~~~PH!!! This is a truncated list, but as you can see the PH is located in the set of four Damselflies between the leeches and the snipers, and is always the top one. These flies are always grouped in four, and are always located between the snipers and the thread leeches. When VE pops your list will look like this... Sniper Sniper Sniper Damselfly Damselfly Damselfly Valkurm Emperor Thread Leech Thread Leech Thread Leech Thread Leech VE always pops on the bottom of the list. If there aren't four flies in the list, that means someone else is killing them. Either nearby parties, or other campers. If this is happening, you have to figure out a way to nab yourself the PH, and be 100% sure that the fly you kill is the PH. After that, go ahead and let the other campers waste their time killing the other flies. Valkurm Emperor Special Attacks

Well thx to some GREAT info. here ive been able to claim and got drop on first try i was thought myself soo lucky that i even had a friend come and i got claim for yet another drop....AWESOME...now i'm 7/9 Empress Hairpin. Lots of buddy's got it from me and sold their Emperor's.

I camped Valkrum Emperor from Friday November 4th - Thursday November 11th. On the first day I made my way to the dunes to see VE pop twice, had no claim. I was subbing thf at the time. Then on Saturday, I camped again, no claims, I camped Golden Bat whenever it was killed to pass time and got the Night Cape. I finally decided that this wasn't working and changed to Ranger Sub. With ranger I began to get claims. Finally I teamed up with a friend and we got 6 claims between the two of us. But all the drops were insect wings. Over the week, we teamed up once more on Monday and more insect wings. On Tuesday I got a claim but nothing. Wednesday I camped all afternoon but no claims, several sightings. I was getting frustrated now, cause the ones that were "stolen" from me dropped pin. Thursday I camped and met a rng (who was a 72 thf also). He was camping so he could sell his emperor pin. I asked if he wanted to team up and he said yes. Our only competition went afk and the other warped. So I easily got claim and we killed it for....ANOTHER D@MN INSECT WING...Well we were pretty pissed so we went and camped Stray Mary to pass time. He got his thf and we came back about an hour and 20 mins after ToD to find about 6 people camping VE. The person I was partying with switched to his 72 thf this time. I was talking to a thf who already had the pin who was helping a friend, and was telling her of my misfourtunes when I saw VE on widescan. I ran over heart racing and got the claim with ease. My thf friend ran over killed it, AND FINALLY GOT THE EMPRESS PIN!

Tips:
- Widescan a must!: Some may tell you it is not necessary, but trust me, it is. It lets you know the place holders are and eventually VE. Flee and TH are great, but what good are those abilities if you can't get the claim.
- Know the 4 spawn points: Know where the 4 place holders and VE can pop. This will help you determine using your widescan where VE will appear. There is a diagram avalable online somewhere, I forgot where I saw it but it helped.
- Using your widescan: As mentioned in previous posts, the 4 placeholders (YES THERE ARE 4) are inbetween the snippers and the Thread Leeches.
- Killing the placeholders: Killing all 4 at once - Gathering all the placeholders together and killing them with an AOE WS will make spawn time of VE more predictable. Killing the place holders at different times - Either you or other people killing the placeholders at different times will make VE spawn location more predictable.
- Predictiong Spawn Location/Time - The placeholders and/or VE will repop after 5 minutes of death. If the kills are at different times, look on widescan. If three are up and you know the spawn location, go to where you know the fourth will spawn, this will usually be the VE if enough time has passed. This helped me a lot.
There you have it. The tips I gave are from personal experience after 6 straight days of camping. If you find them helpful rate me up. Happy hunting ^^.

umm.... I'm almost entirely sure this is a lottery spawn. I've seen him pop up in many places besides just by the trees, I've have to the west of the trees, and to the northwest by that little set of rocks as well.

100%, first fly below the Snippers in the group above the Leeches is definitely the placeholder. 6 times, VE has popped exactly 5 minutes after I killed this placeholder and clocked it with Sharpshot, killing none of the other flies.
I dont want to imply that I am completely agreeing about the 1st fly being the only placeholder, but I'm not going to disregard yet. I agree that he doesnt always pop by the trees, but in my experience (which I will admit is fairly limited) he only pops on top. I'm not an expert but it seems like even though their place on wide scan is fixed, the actualy point at which they pop is not, and likely covers the entire area where VE is known to pop. The thing that would make me doubt this whole theory is the poster below who said they popped him just killing the bottom fly on WS. My tactic when I get around to camping him again is going to be to keep timer on the top fly incase this theory is correct, but thats not going to stop me from spamming WS during that 5min respawn time. I would try to kill all 4 at once but since I have never been in the dunes when there was noone else camping him, I find it very unlikey that this could easily be done.

This is false, I have watched all 4 flies be out, killed the bottom one because it wa closest and then killed the rest, first one to repop (by iteslf) was VE.
This info is on the very first post on this thread but it seems no one had responded to it until now. I also tried this out and it seemed to work, however I only tried it twice so its hard to say for sure, but it appears that VE will indeed only spawn in place of the top Damselfly, this makes it a lot easier if you are the only one killing PH, but it can get tricky w/ ppl killin them like mad. I'm curious tho, if you know where the PH died can you follow some pattern to determine where it will pop or is it random? Anyone know?

Day 1: Camping VE with not many other campers around, 1 hour later everyone leaves, so I assume it was killed. Waited 5 minutes just in case, then headed towards Leaping Lizzy. Camped LL for 2 hours and had 7.5 stacks of Lizard Tails just to have a WAR pop in the last 15 minutes and take her.
Day 2: Camped LL a little more and logged out about 30 minutes before it spawned...
Day 3: Camped LL again...I was alone! But about 30 minutes before it spawned a high level THF appeared and got the claim. No drop for her either. So I decided to go back to VE and on the way check for Mary. No Mary... Got to the beach and autowalked into walls while surfing the net on my other PC. Finally got to the spawn area and just occasionally did a wide scan while still browsing the internet... About 15 minutes later VE spawned near the shore, I ran over without even using Flee and claimed it. I was so excited, but I doubted I would get the drop so I just: /shout <t>! so at least other campers wouldn't waste their time like I did on Day 1. Kept looking at my other computer because I didn't want to get my hopes up, then I finally killed it. It dropped an Insect Wing...Then boom! Must have been lag or something because a couple seconds later it said I got the hairpin!

I Was camping VE for a bit then some1 who i know and kinda trust /tell me that if you kill the placeholders in the tree area that VE pops it can make VE pop faster. She said she got 2 VE in 1 hour or so (probly lil more then 1hour) any1 else observer this trend?

i've never seen 2 pops in 1 hour but so far ive killed all placeholders in area and he has poped 1hour to 1hour 45mins...unless its just me...but he can pop places besides the tree area...
Yeeeeeah, "funny" story... LS mate and I are bored so we decide to camp VE... I'm 35thf/rng shes 25whm/blm so we are some what nervous that we wont be able to take it, she invites a guy she had met before who is a high lvl blm/rng or bst (idk what lvl or which sub he was /anon but he had D2 and widescan). So my days campin Lizzy pay off and I get claim on VE, I suspect my friend and I could have taken him even if I had to Perfect Doge. At any rate we beat him and w00t, get the hairpin. I had asked earlier if we planned on lotting, all said yes. So this guy says like 6 times "lot".... "lot"... "lot". I lot a 603, my friend lots a 16 (ouch) and then... D2! I'm back in bastok... My friend congratulates me on winning lot... but there is no hairpin in my inventory. The blm claims to have also seen that I obtained it but I scroll up and it is NOT there (took screen shot for GM call) Blm disbands and logs off...
Now I am very confused... for one, I'm suspicious that I just got played by this blm and that he stole my hairpin... there was no reason for him to suddenly D2 me w/o my asking for it, and when I asked him why he did this he said "Because you got it" however on the other hand my LS mate said her screen also showed me obtaining the hairpin so perhaps there was some sort of glitch. So now I'm sitting here on a GM chat with a GM who is not answering trying to figure out if there is anything I can do to reclaim my prize.

dude, a little advice first. NEVER, EVER under ANY circumstances camp anything with a blm over level 39!! I made the mistake one time, and apparently you have too! just dont do it, I dont care if its your grandmother in the seat next to you with a lvl 75 blm and u would take a bullet for her, its just not a good idea.
Haha, I like the scenario you present... I will keep the advice in mind... as a side note I believe my grandmothers blm is only 38 so maybe its still ok for us to camp NMs together ^_-
If the 3 of you all lotted and you won, then pin should be in your inventory unless your inventory was full.
Or you lotted, then your friend lotted, then blm casts warp on you both, without lotting, then pin is his.

I agree 100% that everything you said SHOULD have happened, however something went wrong.
For one, According to my screen the person who warped me never cast a lot, but according to my friends screen all 3 lots were cast and I "Obtained the Empress Hairpin." My inventory was not full, I checked right away after I arrived in Bastok (28/30 to be specific). The other thing is, I'm not completely sure but I'm pretty sure the blm D2ed me than warped themselves... So if they were trying to ***** me over it seems like they would only be giving the hairpin to my friend instead of me (which is alot better than it dissapearing or the blm stealing it).
I'm really confused about what to think, the conclusion I am working under is that the blm was just stupid (told us he/she was drinking with friends >.>) and was maybe even trying to be nice, and help me out... but things went wrong. 1: Ban High Lvl player 75rng for seening it on wide scan.

ZOMG SE needs to ban people from using /war and having provoke to use too. I just hate it when someone else gets a claim, so I think that SE should change the rules.
That being said, I hardly ever use widescan the traditional way of scrolling down to the mob... Take Leaping Lizzy camp for instance. All I have to do is pop up the map and widescan to see if there are any mobs in the area, don't even bother scanning for lizzy. So long as you eliminate all the monsters in the area, you know exactly what has popped, and where it's at. AND since you're killing everything in sight, it's more likely to pop up where you are, instead of down where no one is killing anything. I get about 90% of the claims using this tactic <,<
And on to the actual subject of this page, just used that tactic on VE spawn, and got the hairpin for my friend =D Everyone else was hanging out at the trees, and I killed stuff the whole time up in the upper left corner of the spawn area to make him spawn there XD

That is a map with the spawns of all 4 placeholders. Damselflies, all of them.
The placeholders on widescan will always appear on top of several Thread Leeches. Sometimes, people will train these just to confuse campers, but their names will still show up in the same place.
Number 1 - This fly can spawn all up the western wall and sometimes into the lower beach.
Number 2 - This one will spawn from the tree in front of the plateau up to the large rock directly northwest of it.
Number 3 - This one will spawn under the two trees facing the sea, and sometimes down into the beach.
Number 4 - This one is the trickiest. It can spawn from the sand dune eastward up to the face of the rock wall, and down into the beach a bit. There are many flies that spawn in this radius, but there are two ways to find the right one.
First, the simple method. Use widescan to find the fly in this area whose name is above the Thread Leeches. If you have no widescan, there is another method.
Follow the fly you think is the placeholder. The correct fly will never, EVER pass the sand dune that's to the east of the two trees. It'll either stop or change directions.

A good way to find out which is the placeholder, also, is seeing if two damselflies often cross paths. Chances are, if you find two damselflies one next to another, one of them is the placeholder.
The damselfly respawn time is 5 minutes, or 12 game minutes I believe. After 1 hour, the Valkurm Emperor will spawn in place of one of the aforementioned flies, so count your ToDs well when killing them.

Just to let you know only one of those flys is the PH, He always pops on the bottom of the fly's list BUT the one he pops in place of is the top one...
I know this for a fact I am 11/11 on claims and 6/11 on drops (I help my LS out) I let the secret out... its a horrible myth that all 4 are PH's they arent if you watch and only kill the top one VE will spawn
I hit him 4 times in a row and not one of the spawns was over 1hr 15 min from the last ToD, so good luck 65THF/NIN(RNG)

VE has been going 9 hours no pop....frekain retarded. Ive hunted him for so logn now. 0/7 on him. its stupid this guy is so annoying. u just wanna trounce his face when he pops. >.> pffht

Umm.... There is now way Lizzy popped 5 times in an hour. Ive seen her pop within 5 min, but thats it, then you gotta wait a while again. Why am I puting this on a VE page?

Our puller says "Valkurm Emperor", so naturally we all say {lie} :P but we all go up and see it. He had spawned very close to the beach on the south side of the trees. The fight actualy went incredibly well. The key was the two NINs, it wouldn't have been possible without that or without the skill and timing they had. RDM and BLM nuked, WHM healed, I punch the crap out of it. :P
Though he did use Venom alot, if he spammed Cursed Sphere that would of been it. Even the one sphere he tossed out got one of our NINs down to red and he took him out with another hit, but we carried on okay. In the last bit a friend of the other NIN came along and healed us, but we had things good. I was the only one who used my 2 Hour I think, so we had things pretty much in the bag at that point.
No drop though, but that was fun as hell. Guess now I can finally start my NM count...

Our puller says "Valkurm Emperor", so naturally we all say {lie} :P but we all go up and see it. He had spawned very close to the beach on the south side of the trees. Backing up Bravado's post, this did happen. It was an awesome battle. Our mages actually ran out of MP at 70% health on VE and Madcamper and I had to trade hate back and forth until they rested it up.

The battle went especially clean, like he said. I don't know how many EXP parties have killed VE, but this was the first I've ever heard of it happened.
He hit me for 60-80 per hit, and, being a 75 PLD, I know that this battle would have been impossible without dual NIN tanks. Props to Madcamper, he did a wonderful job as my back-up tank.

had this happen a while ago. partying in dunes with a rdm PL. the puller says "pulling Valkurm Emperor". so here comes our thf with the VE right on her ***. the rdm flips out. we start getting the bejebus beaten out of us, but the rdm is intent on getting the drop. out of nowhere the leader (friend of rdm) drops someone out of party, invites the rdm, who then proceeded to kill it. no drop though. considering we were only a bunch of level 14/15's, and a 60 rdm in our party... we TECHNICALLY killed it ^_^;

camped this thing 4 days straight, 2 claims and no drop RNG/THF was told to just give ur since i didnt have flee, but i would suggest having TH2 w/ you, makes it a much easier day with 2 ppl on it and haveing flee. if any 1 wouldnt mind helping im Caitsith server, names Merlyn ty and GL camping yall

SECRETS TO CAMPING VALKURM EMPEROR!!!
I'm a NM hunter on Fenrir and Seraph servers. (NO! I'm not a gilseller or bot.) I've camped Valkurm Emperor for about 3 weeks straight once competing against the gay Kiss clan on Serpah server. (Anyone on Seraph knows these gilsellers. They are 4 people who went as THF/WAR, or ???/WAR. They would stand in one spot and camp them every hour of every day of every month til the update that made it rare/ex.) Anyways, I have a bit of information after camping that can help A LOAD of people out.
First off, there are ONLY 4 Placeholders. Where the trees are in the middle, go northwest to the pointy top of the sand and stand there. Use widescan and I will prove it to you. There names come between the Thread Leeches and Snippers (or Clippers not sure on the Crabs name atm). Also, the Valkurm Emperor's name appears between here too. So now you don't have to scroll all the way down on wide scan or anything.
Secondly, the Damselflies have a 5min (earth time) and 2:10 (game time) respawn time. For instance if they died at 14:05 game time, they would respawn at 16:15 game time. I would gather all 4 damselflies (or as many as I could if there were a lot of people killing them) and AoE kill them. I'd get their HP down and use Cyclone. Also, just to make sure I didn't miss a respawn, I would start scanning between 2:00 - 2:05 game time after the flies died.
If other people are camping, ask them to just let you kill the flies. Most of the time they will say yes so that they only need to worry about the Valkurm Emperor. Gather all 4 flies, AoE, go rest and do something for 5minutes, rescan. It's a lot less stressful than having to wide scan EVERY second until it spawns.
Lastly, the Valkurm Emperor takes AT LEAST 1 hour to respawn (maybe 55 minutes but definally no less than that). There is no maximum spawn time but I have seen a 8 hour and heard of a 10 hour.
Hope this helps a little for anyone who wants to camp it.

Rated up - thanks for the info! From reading this post and the one below I was able to claim VE two times last night and got Pin on second drop! I'm not sure if its true or not but I had read in either this thread or the pin thread that VE's placeholder is only the first listed Damselfly. I tried killing only this one and the first spawn of VE he did show up first on the list. However, the second spawn he showed up 4th on the list (I am 90% certain I was still killing the first Damselfly though - hard to tell for sure with other campers there). So anyway, maybe this info will help others as to narrowing it down to one placeholder mob. Now I can continue levelling my THF! /cheer

I admit I might not be right all the time, but that isn't a reason to rate someone down. Just reply to them and tell them how to fix their Post.

This mob has gotten alot less camped these days, or its being camped by stupid people. I was lvling ranger in valkrum dunes, and saw this bad boy on my wide scan. I checked, Unclaimed, I had enough time to sit there and debate with the party on whether or not we should take a chance. We took it and got it down to 1/3rd to 1/2 its HP and It killed the entire party.

I decided to start lvling my 46 thf again after about months. But i had sold most of the gear that i had originally acquired. Ve is a great piece of equipment for thf so it was first on my list to reacquire. I got to the camp site and there was only a few other camper 3 i think so i started killing the place holders. After the last had died i waited about 2 min then hit widescan and there he was so i hit flee and ran past onother camper heading in that direction. The other camper was a beastmaster so i use steal to claim since charm is faster than my ranged attack.I got the claim and the hairpin in all of 8 min camping. i hope ne1 else needing this has the same luck.
Does Valkurm Emperor have an aftershock like lizzy does? Sometimes leaping lizzy appears twice in 15 minutes, then again after 3 hours. Does VE do this?
no. Leaping Lizzy also only reappears very fast if it has an "off" respawn time. By that i mean that after its last death, it takes 1hour 50-55min. Then it should respawn within 5-10minutes. Try it out if you don't believe me. Look at the clock while your camping and wait for it to spawn. After a few times it will spawn off a little then wait for a respawn.

could i solo this as a 32thf/11rng if i spamed blots? i've been wanting to camp this but as a SAM i dont have any quick claims so...

I'm pretty sure if you did solo this as a gimp 32thf/rng you were INCREDIBLY lucky to survive, I went at him earlier today w/ 36thf/rng (ungimped) and he would have slaughtered me if not for the fact that I had a friend w/ me. I got to him first (of course!) and after he hit me like 4 consecutive times I used PD, still, in the end he got me down to like 67/550 or so. Both of us got off SAs and I got off a TA on my friend, also I have bounding boots on and pretty good gear, and he still hit hella hard, hella accurate. Granted we did not spam bolts but I cant see that in most cases thats gonna make enough difference. You're evasion must have worked overtime to get you through.
And now that I have the attention of whoever I still have the attention of =P I would like to talk about one other thing... Ppl who have the ability to cure but would rather see the claimer die... get a life. As thf/rng I dont really have a lot I can do when someone else claims except /cheer them on, but if I had the ability to cure them and they had 67hp after using their 2hr I would do it! Theres no reason to be a jerk, just respect each other...

dude, no offence, but u can kill this as 36thf/any lv rng, using about 10 bolts and no 2hr done it at 34 but i had capped eva and marksmanship, but im elvaan so less agi etc. just get a stack of bloodys, and ull be ok for at least 10 claims

So from what I've heard...since the patch it's actually possible to camp this thing and get the drop now? I used to camp this thing for hours before the patch and the bots would always get it!

Just got mine using Rubixtoo's method. Works great and I beat everyone else to the mob with flee and pulled with steal. Sorry Bloop btw if u read this, GL.
