I've only faced this monster twice thus far, and I was lucky enough to get the Robe on my 2nd battle with it. We recieved the Wand during our first battle. If it means anything, we recieved the Robe on Earthday, at around 10:00 (give or take a couple hours).
In other news, I was teaming with a level 21 WHM/10 THF there for about 3 hours, and I'm currently a level 21 MNK/10 THF. We were stealing nothing but beastcoins from the monster.
It seems to spawn in the east-north-eastern area of that circle drawn on the map above.
Good thing about this area for level 20ish folks is that you can farm Fire Crystals like MAD inbetween the NM spawns. We got at LEAST 100 fire crystals between the two of us within the 3 hours of mindlessly slaughtering Orcs there, not to mention the ~4000 gil and 2000xp we each earned.

is there a second floor to this or soemthing? cause i go mining there alot and in this picture it looks like the sun is shining, but im pretty sure theres no sun in there and its a cave..

Killed him about 4 times now and still no friggin robe, only the wands which STILL haven't sold at the AH.
well, I thought i'd try this NM since I suck at finding them. lvl 25WAR/12MNK I went there ,and killed a few orcs, then when spawn came around he was the first. So my theory is, he spawns every x minutes, and if there is no spot he is put in some sort of queue position till another orc is killed then he pops.

My friend and I camped this NM the other night on the way back from helping a LS friend get his Ghelsba key for the Kahzam airship quest. In the three times I've personally fought it, I've gotten the robe once, and that was with my friend who subbed thf (36whm/18thf). I was 38rdm/16whm. When we entered the area that Ashmaker spawns, someone told us they had just defeated him 10 mins prior. As no one else was in the area, we decided to wait it out and kill all the orcs and bats in the area. This was done also since we were not sure if the orcs in the area are placeholders.
I'm not sure what day it was, but the moon was at 5% (I'm including that info since a lot of people believe moon phase has a lot to do with certain aspects of the game). About an hour and 10 mins of killing everything in Ashmaker's room and the adjacent caverns, Ashmaker spawned. In my three dealings with him, he spawned in the southwest half of the room indicated in the map above. Being almost twice the lvl Ashmaker is, the fight was easy. He did cast Manafont (Black Mage 2hr) right at the start of the fight, but casting Silence on him made him completely helpless. If you are lower lvl and decide to fight him, casting Silence if you can will definitely help. As I mentioned, in this particular fight we received the robe.
As this was the only time I fought this NM with a friend with Thief sub, I can't make an argument as to whether this helped in the drop. However, reading the prior posts here, it does seem like he is on a timer (about an hour +/- 15mins), and that killing the orcs will help him to spawn as they appear to be placeholders. I'm assuming that the reason why he spawned at intervals greater than an hour as mentioned in some earlier posts is that you do have to kill the placeholder orcs. Again, this is just based on three fights with Ashmaker, but this is just my observation.
** for those who are thinking about camping this NM for robe to sell, the robe sells for 35k-40k at Jeuno AH on Fenrir server. Wands go for 1.5-2k...yes, I am on a cheap server. ;-)

Ive killed the Ashmaker about 20 times, with a 15 thf subbed and hes dropped it 3 times so far. Hes my most successful notorious monster so far!
26 DRK/WAR camped 5 times, dropped the wand everytime! I want that robe! I wonder if SE messed with the drop rate.

i think he might be a lottery pop w/ the orcs in the area.
i was there for mining and i just killed or the orcs and when they respawned, Ashmaker was there.

There are different floors in the Yughott Grotto, thats why the map is different.
Ok i have heard that TH does not increase drop rate or RARE items, just regular items and RARE/EX. Is this true.
it increases drop rates on everything. i am a lvl 41 thief, and i get 5 times as many drops as other people my level. that's without the second Treasure Hunter.

Treasure Hunter I gives a 20% or something like that in all dropped items. Rare or just plain old regular.
Treasure Hunter II increases that percentage to 40% on all item types.
The only thing TH doesn't effect are the exclusive items. That's why so many people from level 15 on up want a thief in their party because the mobs will drop more rare items then they normally would.

Thats right. TH gives a +15% to rare and reg items. It and TH2 dont affect any ex drops though.

Well The map shown above is completely different form the map I'm looking at. it has three entrances, but completely different layout. I'm on the cerberus server, can the layout be different for each server

The Grotto has two levels, this is the lower level. You get to it by taking a left upon entering Ghelsba Outpost and then taking the first left. This will take you off map. Just follow the path and you'll get to the lower Grotto.

I dont care what anyone says... from how much I've studied the spawn time... it seems to just be plain out random. he has popped w/ mobs near him, w/ no mobs near him, anytime of the day, any elemental-day--no specific pop traits like most other NMs

most NMs are not on a timer, and will pop in place of a regular mob, and are called Placeholders. ie: kill other orcs in the Grotto, and he will eventually pop in place of one. sure he may not pop in place of one until some time has gone by, but i doubt that it's timed down to the second.
i have not camped this particular NM yet, so i can't confirm this, but it may be the case.

I'd have to disagree and agree. From my experience, Ashmaker is on a one to two hour timer, but the placeholder mobs do count. Obviously, if the placeholders aren't killed when that time comes around, he won't spawn; they're there taking up the physical space, as only so many mobs can be around at one time. If those mobs are killed after an amount of time, the chance for the NM to pop is much greater, hence it sometimes taking maybe up to two hours.
However, another theory which may also apply is how many placeholders must be killed. As I have consistently killed the mobs waiting for him to spawn as soon as they pop, it may have usually been the same number. However, other people have concluded the spawn time is one to two hours, though they may kill the mobs slower or faster because of a different level or job.
Therefore I think it's time. As for him not popping more or less on time, are you sure you are killing the correct placeholders? There should be four orcs in that encircled area, a Neckchopper and a few Grunts and Stonechuckers. I killed all four consistently and he always appear more or less on time. Anyway, just from my experience camping and fighting him 13 times. Thanks.

he's definitely not a 1h25m spawn on Midgardsormr. camped the area for two hours last night- never saw him.
my guess is three hours... although it might be a different number entirely (lots of pop-times were changed over the last major patch)

I've seen this hunted like 7 times in a row on its 1hr25 min cycle and im also on Midgradsormr, but maybe every once and a while there is a 3hr thrown in, or maybe someone took it without you seeing.
Don't know if this has been said, but if you dont get the Robe the Wand is automatic, sells for 2k on my server. Robe doesnt seem too rare.
