General Information

Jormungand's Spawn Location
Jormungand's Spawn Location

  • Spawn time is 72-120 hours after the last ToD, or 36-72 hours after a server maintenance when the servers are offline. Thirty minute intervals between each window.

  • Susceptible to Sleep, Stun, Slow, and Elegy. Immune to Lullaby and Silence. Resistant to Paralysis.

  • Every minute, Jormungand will fly into the air, where he'll stay for approximately 30 seconds before coming to the ground again. During this time, melee attacks will have no effect on him (magic and ranged attacks can still affect him though). While he's in the air, his normal attacks are magical, ice based attacks that cannot be absorbed by shadows, but can be reduced by damage reduction, magic defense, magic reduction, and ice resist effects (through gear, spells, job abilities, etc). While he is in the air, he cannot be slept (Sleep will land on him, but it will wear off immediately)

  • When his hp reaches below 30%, Jormungand will begin to increase the rate of his tp moves considerably. Extreme caution is recommended during the last 30% of his hp.

  • Has a draw-in effect.

  • Has an auto-regen effect that cannot be dispelled.

  • Grants title: World Serpent Slayer

Jormungand Special Abilities

  • Blizzaga III: AoE Ice based magical spell (AoE circle originates from the spell target).

  • Ice Spikes: Inflicts Ice based magical damage against all that melee Jormungand. Ice damage can inflict paralysis. Effect can be dispelled.

  • Paralyga: AoE Paralyze spell (AoE circle originates from the spell target)

  • Bindga: AoE Bind spell (AoE circle originates from the spell target)

  • Horrid Roar: Single target full Dispel and Enmity reset effects.

  • Absolute Terror: Single target Terror effect. Target is unable to perform any action until effect wears off.

  • Gregale Wing: AoE magical damage with an additional Paralysis effect.

  • Glacial Breath: Cone AoE Ice based damage. Damage is the strongest on anyone directly in front of Jormungand. Recommended for all tanks to stand on Jormungand's front legs to reduce damage taken.

    • Jormungand will only perform Glacial Breath while on the ground.

  • Touchdown: AoE damage. Wipes shadows. Tp move is performed when Jormungand lands on the ground after being in the air.

  • Sleet Blast: Strong AoE Ice based magic damage.

    • Jormungand will only perform Sleet Blast while in the air.

  • Spike Flail: Massive AoE physical damage. Absorbed by three shadows. Will only occur when a character has drawn hate from behind it.

    • Jormungand cannot perform Spike Flail while in flight.

  • Blood Weapon: Restores hp to Jormungand equal to the amount of damage he inflicts with each melee attack. At approximately 85% hp, Jormungand will begin to use this ability, and will often use it once after each time in the air. Denoted by the characteristic mob two-hour animation.

    • Jormungand will not perform Blood Weapon while in the air.

Note: All AoE moves will hit anyone within range, regardless if they or their alliance has hate on Jormungand or not.

Jormungand in Riverne - Site #B01

  • Jormungand possesses the same abilities as his full strength counterpart in Uleguerand Range, though has a decidedly lower amount of HP.

Historical Background

In Norse mythology, Jormungand (originally spelled Jormungandr) was the middle offspring of the prankster god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. His siblings were the wolf monster Fenrisulfr (see Fenrir Prime) and Hel, the future ruler of the underworld that would bear the same name.

Soon after birth, Odin hurled Jormungandr into the ocean that surrounded Midgard (the human world), where it grew so large that its body encircled the whole of the Earth, eventually biting hold of its own tail. Because of this, Jormungandr also became known as Midgardsormr, the Midgard Serpent (also known as the World Serpent, hence the reason that defeating Jormungand grants the title of World Serpent Slayer)

During the Ragnarok (see Ragnarok), the thunder god Thor met Jormungandr in battle and slew him, only to succumb to the monster's poison and die after only taking nine steps.

One..or Two?
# Feb 23 2005 at 1:56 PM Rating: Default
He has NOT been taken down by a single NA LS yet...so far it has taken either one Japanese LS/two Japanese Linkshells, or Two NA Linkshells to beat him. I assume he would be a pice of cake (for those who know what theyre doing) if you had 60+ people, i mean when it comes down to it, and he's in rage mode, healing and tanking become paramont concerns, since the DD cant lay off as his regen is INSANE at this point, but with 60+, you can have a phalanx of tanks ready to toss their corpses at him, making that less of an issue, allowing the DD to concentrate more avidly on doing their job, abd worrying less about backing off. Plus additional non-main allianc mages can help heal since his AOE Sleet Blast and Touchdown (as well as Gregale Wing) reach farther in Rage Mode.

WRONG simply put. KoN (Knights of Ni) a NA Onry ls in cereberus took him down alone a few weeks ago with 32~ people. And his HP regen is not insane. Even when he was kited for 3~5 min cause spike flail killed 15 of the 18 people in main alliance @ 1% his hp didnt budge.
#REDACTED, Posted: Jan 22 2005 at 6:55 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) if you think mobs on FFXI are hard, try the mobs on WoW. boss monsters like Onyxia(full-fledged Dragon) are level 500! level 60 is the level cap, and people have made full raid groups(40 people) to take her down, and were pwned in minutes.

Dude it cant be 60+ because the level 60s in the video of the Onyxia raid couldn't tell what level she was because it had a ?? there, people can tell what mobs levels are 10 levels above their own

Ummmm for the record wouldn't matter if you were level 1 or levels 75 still wouldn't be able to determine it's level. It doesn't show up as ??? to level 60's....it shows up as "Impossible to Guage" to ALL. NMs are all "Impossible to Guage"

...The 60+ stated above doesn't suggest you'd need people that are level 60 or above to kill it, or that Jormungand is level 60 or above... It's suggesting that you have 60 or more PEOPLE (all 70-75, of course) to fight it with.
RE: Hard? that's BS

1. 60+ = 60 and above meaning it can be above what you can read and not be 500+

I was with the Bismarck group to kill him, though I was part of bomb squad and didn't get to see much of the fight. He dropped 4 molybdenum ore, dragon talon, and dragon heart only. ArchDominus + Lunarians do DragonSlayer events together, and we beat him down! Title gained is World Serpent Slayer.

i decided to pay this guy a visit while i was bored today... got to him... at the time it was double ice weather and the area was flooded with ice elementals and white bomb things... waited for the weather to clear up. i decided i wanted to go dia him really quick... he ended up aggroing me from a pretty far distance. so i broke and began to run south... he casted ice spikes on himself then chased me in mid air ; ; he hit me for 325 then 81 then 325 with no buffs on. fun

Indeed this is that ***. Check is equipment. Armand habuerk? I don't think so. Peacocok charm, ect...

He made a thread about getting the relic weapon (fully upgraded), then got his *** handed to him. Why the **** he picked Bismark server, I don't know. I'm not on bismark, and neither is he. He is like a level 20 something newb. Take that **** out of your profile.

Oh, and by the way, Dragoons aren't gonna be fighting kirin, they're gonna be off to the side watching, or possibly fighting summons.

Decided to take a skiing trip to Uleguerand range. Saw Jormungand tehre what an amazing sight. Be warned there are mobs that agro on true sight and they cast doom. You have 10 seconds to use Holy Water or Cursna or say goodby. There are VT Buffalo, Eyes and Elementals near Jormungand and I'm a 75 Monk. There is a cliff that looks amazing and if you get too close you will fall down the mountain. Inside the cave are EP Mindgazers and Decent Challenge bats.

Oi, what an adventure.

This guy was insanely hard. We tried three times last night, and died pretty quickly the first two times. But, on the third attempt, we held him for around an hour. Unfortunately, we didn't have many damage dealers... and if you go up there without a LOT of them, you are not going to win. His HP regenerates very quickly, and there are a TON of adds you have to deal with in separate PTs as well (the ice elementals are especially difficult). I think that throughout the entire battle, we got him down to about 97% at best... just to have him regenerate his HP entirely (while we were dealing with the adds).

We had about 35 people. This thing is very difficult. I think Tiamat is easier.

what i noticed was the area where he spawns in is flooded with white bombs and ice elementals... the big open area just east of it that has a frozen waterfall has only a few buffalo and white bombs. i noticed that everytime there was ice weather there were no signs of any elemental spawns in that area with the frozen waterfall. the white bombs only hang out at the frozen waterfall so it would be easy to avoid magic aggro. it may be possible to pull and fight him there. i successfully had him chasing after me for about 30 seconds with out flee and he didnt draw me in until he was close enough to whack me a few times. i wanted to take my LS to play with him for a bit but unfortunatly a few of my LS members are afraid of death.... -.- sux

from what i checked gear wise, it would seem only a alliance of 12 dragoons lvl 70+ with full dragon armor (not af, dragon armor reduces breath dmg by 5-10% depending on piece), and 6whm's could probably have a easy time beating this thing. Just speculation of course.

Jormungand or the Midgard serpent, as it's sometimes called I believe, was the serpent that circled itself and the world. Ourobouros is the snake that's eating it's own tail - sort of a metaphor for a never-ending circle.

the myth
# Nov 03 2004 at 9:52 PM Rating: Excellent
Jormungand is a son of Loki from Norse Myth. It was a serpent that grew to be so huge it had to envelope itself because it circled the earth and then some. The coils of Jormungand covered the ocean bottom and it remains this way until the time of Ragnarok when Jormungand and Thor kill each other. Thor kills Jormungand with his hammer Mjollnir but dies of the serpent's poison soon after.

Just thought you might be interested in some mythical background for this guy. :D

your theory is interesting and all, but all the WHM Relic WS is is an MP heal WS
RE: the myth
# Nov 08 2004 at 4:32 PM Rating: Decent
This is one of the 3 new HNM dragons, yes... and this story makes me wonder if any of you realize that WHM relic Weapon, Fully Upgraded, is called Mjollnir... Now it aalso give the W/S Randgrith...

From the stories on how insanely hard it is to kill these new dragons, It makes me wonder if each one is weak to a specific level 4 weapon skill, I mean who on earth would think to send a WHM in to melee?! Sound like exactly the kind of puzzle SE would throw in. Not saying that it would instantly kill the dragon of course, but rumors are that melee hits these things from 0-12 and that they are extremely resistant to magic...

so if a whm was able to TP for 1200 damage, that would be fairly significant here...

...something I wish I could test, but unfortunately it is insanely difficult to get a fully upgraded relic weapon, and that just makes it seem all the more likely that there is a purpose for each weapon.

just my 2 gil

You didn't know that Whm can sub Thf? Don't you think that an attack which would do 1.2k dmg which can stack with Trick Attack would HELP the tank keep hate? Using SATA would be retarded, you wouldn't want to be Spike Flail'd... Either way, it has nothing to do with Jorgy, people have done trial & error with all that crap.

HNMs also shed hate like crazy so a 1200 damage WS would pull hate off of a tank quite easily.

Not necessarily.

Going by what was stated, if DDs are doing ~12 damage per hit, with a 1200 WS, the PLD would have had to have been tanking it for a while before building enough hate to keep that thing off the WHM. Especially considering the WHM is probably also running around raising/curing/erasing people.
RE: the myth
# Nov 18 2004 at 2:37 PM Rating: Decent
not to mention, the whm would most likely have reraise 2, and probably even reraise 3 at the level required to even consider scratching one of these things.

seriously. if a whm is going to go in and melee something with the possibility of dealing major damage, and they DONT put reraise on? i'd be curious as to how they made it as far as they had.

Well yeah, the premise was using the Relic's WS on the dragon, which would require 75, so they'd have Reraise 3.

But then the WHM is weakened and must run away to heal for MP, and unless they're lucky, the dragon will most likely throw an AoE at some point and kill them again, or a random mob will agro.

Purely speculation at this point, I've no idea if it has AoEs or how bad they are, and I really don't plan to find out. :-D

Cool, they finally put Midgardsormr into the game. The fact that they made him a dragon is kind of surprising but it works I guess. They could have used the Midgar Zolom from FFVII to similar effect (Midgardsormr/Jormungand was the World Serpent that encircled the earth in Norse Mythology).
