This can be done solo.

I got my sallet solo fairly easily. You just have to bring a lot (i mean like 8)of RR earrings. Simply cycle Bio and Drain on one of the flies and keep re-raising and repeating until it dies.

It is very imperative that EVERYONE bring many reraises to this fight. Not just 1-2 charges, like 6-10.

On the way to the fight, you must farm dragons beforehand to get a Giant Scale, which allows access to the area in which these NM's dwell. And it's also worth noting that this is NOT an easy drop without Treasure Hunter.

You CANNOT pull these flies individually. I personally recommend taking 3-4SMN 2-3BLM 1PLD 1WHM at least. Leave the WHM at the zone just before where the Dobsonflies are for the initial pull, for insurance reasons. Have Paladin do the initial pull with 2 hour up, the SMN all 2 hour the flies when they're all gathered around the PLD, and have an order for BLM's to Elemental Seal + Sleepga in case something goes wrong. Sometimes the SMN's 2 hours won't entirely finish the flies, and some BLM might have to sync in some Stonega 2 nukes.

IF something does go wrong, you're stuck there for 2 hours waiting on that awesome Job Ability. Or you can just fight them 1 by 1. The WHM is insurance, in case the initial 2 hour strategy doesn't work, and SOMEBODY forgets reraise, they won't have to sit there dead the entire time because of the lack of any extra Giant Scales. The WHM can join the party after the initial pull, to help out with cures or whatever, if indeed you are stuck fighting them 1 by 1. The flies are pretty resistant to Sleepga, too. So Elemental Seal is sort of a necessity.

I've seen a couple japanese BLM try and solo. By starting off with reraise, a high dmg nuke, immediately followed with a Bio II, die, Reraise, Bio II, die, repeat. I never seen any of them succeed, although to me, it seemed like it maybe could work.

OH, and the ToD of the LAST fly dead is considered the ToD. And you must be on COP 2-5, or further. Every fly will NOT drop an item. The drops are sometimes odd, some runs you'll get a lot of rings, a few bandannas, a couple of sallets. Some runs you'll get tons of bandannas, no rings, a sallet or 3. Out of the 6 runs I went on, I seen 2-3 Sallets drops, 0-5 Rings, and alot of bandannas. Meaning, one run, 0 rings dropped. One run only 2 sallets dropped.

Every run we had Treasure Hunter on a class that was able to get aggro on EVERY mob. The Paladin won't work because he's only getting hate on 1 fly, not all 10.

If you camp this more than once, save the Bandannas. If everyone has one, they won't drop. Same with rings. We went for Sallets, everyone has Bandanna and Ring now, and now when we kill, either it'll drop a Sallet or nothing at all.

1st Run:
About 7-9 Bandanas
2 Sallets
0 Rings

2nd Run
About 7-9 bandanas
0 Sallets
4 Rings

>.>;

We are using a pure BLM and SMN method.
4 SMN's 2 BLMs
One SMN pulls with avatar.
BLM's sleepga.

Proceed to 2hr, and everything should be dead.
BLM's clean up any leftovers.

Here's how we did it.

Ok. So for me anyway, the biggest pain in the **** with this NM is getting people together to do it. Because of that, I took it upon myself to read up on this bugger (10 buggers?) and come up with a strategy that uses the fewest people possible. The good news is that it does work, and if successful you won't have as many people to lot against. The bad news is that if something (really anything) goes wrong.... you're boned. Up to the challenge? Read on.

Setup- 4 people can take out all 10 NMs with no deaths. You need 1 aggro'er, 1 sleeper, and 2 smns. For aggro'ing we used a pld, but i believe a thf would work as well. They dont' have to provoke, they just need to get the mob's attention so all 10 flies will gather up. Our sleeper was a blm (me) but i think a brd would do as well. Technically I suppose the smns COULD be blms... and you COULD use a 3 blm nuke/sleep method, but that would take alot more work and the setup is already so barebones that i'd not even consider replacing the smns.

The fight- Once you've gotten a scale and gotten to the pop sight, take time to eat, buff, heal, whatever. We stood right on the spot where you zone onto the island- away from all the possible aggro. The sleeper needs to move away from the other 3 so that they can clearly see when all 10 flies are close enough for smn AoE attacks. It is the sleepers job to call out the attack and the Smn's job to wait until the sleeper tells them to go! Here's the order of what needs to happen- *Note; everything must happen quickly and precisely for this to work! Make sure everyone understands their roll*
1) Everyone is ready.. sleeper is slightly away from pt to watch incomming flies
2) Smns and Aggro'er target nearest fly.
3) Smns call Shiva
4) Aggro'er gets the attention of his fly (ranged/voke/whatever)
5) Now all of these things happen at once- 1 Astral Flow 2 Invincible/Perfect Dodge 3 Elemental Seal (if blm... does brd have an equivalent?)

* it is important that neither the aggro'er nor the avatars attack the flies. The smns must just stand close enough to the aggro'er so that Diamond Dust will hit all 10. If you wake a fly accidently, you're in trouble.*

6) The sleeper sees that all 10 flies are in range (they WILL stop to cast Aero2 so be patient) and tells the smns to use Diamond Dust, then runs to rejoin the group (reasons being twofold- 1 you're about to sleep 10 mobs that you dont' want to scatter when they wake 2 you dont' want magic aggro from atomic clusters on island if you are blm). During this time Perfect Dodge/Invincible is stopping physical attacks, but you'll need Hipots/Cure3 to keep aggro'er alive from the Aero2's
7) Both Smns Use Diamond Dust.
8) When the sleeper sees 2 "Shiva ready's Diamond Dust" in their chat log, they begin their sleepga. Make sure you witness both! If one smn is late off the mark the second DD will wake them right back up, and you are in a world of hurt.
9) IMMEDIATELY after the Smns use DD they release Shiva and rest for mp!

*Sleepga unresisted (which is why i recommend a blm and ES) lasts 1 minute. This is just barely enough time for a second wave of DDs to be ready and you need 87MP for it to go off properly so sit down and rest! (yag drinks if you want to but not needed) During this time, the aggro'er is hopefully alive and resting, and the sleeper is right next to him, so that the flies will not scatter when they wake. (note- sleeper be ready for a 2nd sleepga if flies DO wake a little early... it can happen and 9 of the 10 flies will only have eyes for you, so you HAVE to get it off fast.)

10) with 10-15 seconds left before Blood pact rage, (and opefully more than 87 MP in the bank) the smns get back up and resummon Shiva. Again, no assaulting, just get in close to the fly in the middle of the pack and both smns DD as soon as it's ready!

Four Diamond Dusts WILL kill all 10 flies, so if all went well, you've just won! However, during my run, 3 of the flies did not get hit with the 4th DD and had about 5% HP left. If this happens, don't panic. You still have an AoE sleeper and 2 smns who are in astral flow mode and have a free avatar out. Act quickly, sleep what you can and assault them, and within literally 2 hits each, they will die (so long as 3/4 DD hit.) The Aggro'er can feel free to join in on the clean-up... our pld did^^

So; I dont' know if anyone else has done this strategy, or if there are ways to make it better (please feel free to add). All I know is that after being wholey unsuccessful in getting 4 smns together (i realize that's easy for alot of people) I got fed up and decided to break it down to the bare minimum and it worked :)
The bad part is the fact that with 10 dead flies, we only got 9 bandanas, 1 ring, and 0 sallets =(

It especially stunk cause i won the right to lot the 1st sallet that dropped.. so i only needed one TO drop.

Oh well.. we're planning on going back tomorrow anyway >:)

Here's how we did it.

*Edit- 3 days later using the same strategy and here are the results.

Day 1 smn/whm, smn/whm, pld/war, blm/whm = 0 sallets

Day 2 same setup but pld was /thf for TH since all he needed to do was pull= 1 sallet

That got me thinking... TH only works if the thf or /thf is on the mob's hate list, and the pld only flashed 1 mob... 1 mob... 1 sallet

Hence

Day 3 smn/whm, smn/whm, pld/war, blm/thf (sleepga puts you on all 10's list)= 3 sallets

-is a one time deal proof positive? Not at all, but the blm doesn't need to be /whm so subbing thf in this setup can't hurt.
Here's how we did it.
# Dec 04 2008 at 5:15 AM Rating: Decent
I agree with this theory. We actually had a SMN sub THF the first run, because we ended up with 4SMN, we had 2 or 3 sallets fall. Everytime though we made sure we had TH on someone who was able to get hate on all the mobs, and never ended up with 0 sallets out of 6 runs. The least that ever dropped was 2. The rings, on the other hand, we had 0 drop on 1 run even with TH.

I've read a strategy for Blu to solo these things, involves Pinecone Bombing it and zoning through the displacement to deaggro them repeatedly. I'd like to say I just tried that. Two words said it all... Event Skipped.

The other day i was in a pick up group that went after these and there was a player there that waited til we made our pull and then he pulled one off and killed it. We were a little pissed at that, but that was a pretty good plan.

Ok I got a story to tell and can hopefully clear up any questions you guys have.

I got a party together 4 smn 2 blm wish we had a Pally but that didnt happen. We go up there and ; ; no flys there just as were all ******** they spawn like within 2 min of me entering site. Plan was 1 smn pull blm sleepga 4 smn 2hr BP sleepga again and redo. Yes if a smn pulls with avitar all flys still link!!
Didnt work out so well killed a few first blast prolly could have killed more if more organized but didnt and wound up having a wipe. So smn RR up and throw off another round before 2hr died 3 rings drop still had 3 left. Zoned rested MP and weakness away and decided to try to strait DD em one at a time which worked pretty well they are weak to BP moves just had to keep other 2 slept with 2 blm was easy. anyway another ring drop so 4 rings not too bad.

Now to try for a Sallet!

Thanks go out to Zanadul who didnt even have to come out I owe you some deaths man.

Anyone know if it's a 21-24 hour spawn from the last one killed? What happens if 2 flies are killed first then the rest in say 10 hours? Will spawn time be from the last one killed or will 2 spawn before the 8 flies?

So I saw someone saying that he charmed a hawker (44-48) and it killed this NM while having 2/3HP left. What happens to the others that suppose to be linked?

As i read other sites and everyone on here, its 21-24 hour spawn. Naturaly after maintence i camp this with a handfull of smner friends. 3 hours go by nothing pops.

for me 21-24 didn't work after maintence

is this like shigami weapon where its 18 hours after maintence window opens?

Run today resulted in 3 Jaeger Rings, 2 Voyager Sallets and 9 Dobson Bandanas.

Just to give an idea of typical drops...

(Also I ended with a Sallet and Bandana ^^)
Heavily camped?

It's a 21-24 hour respawn, but is it one (or ten o.o;) of the mobs that is usually
up? Or would you have to compete against others for it (on average)?

The bottom line for fighting these guys is you have to find a way to deal with all 12 of em at once. You could take an alliance and a ton of tanks and deal with links, but even then you will probably get cursed sphere'd out of the ballpark.

In the end, a ton of Blms or smns seems to be the best way to do this.

Each fly can drop. Jaeger rings and bandanas are the usual drops, Sallets seem to be the rare drop. That said, you generally see 2-6 rings, 4-10 bandanas, and 1-4 sallets.

Good luck out there.

As far as the level of the mobs. I'd say level 40-42 each. The reason I say that is, when I went with my BST I charmed a Hawker (Lvl 44-48 Fly) and it could kill one and still have about 2/3 HP left.

Respawn time is 21-24 hours after the last Fly has been killed.

The Flies will not despawn after a certain if you don't kill them all. Unlike the 3 Hippogriph NMs in Riverne Site #Ao1

As far as a recommended way to kill them. Id say, Couple of BSTs and a Couple of BLMs. But what we used when I went was a NIN Kiter and 3 BSTs pulling 1 each per BST at a time.

I've seen the bst - blm strategy work
with these flys on account of sleepga.

Which makes a Ranger curious... >.>;
do you think its a possibility
the rest of the flys will link if the
first one never wakes up??? 0.o;

Just curious! I have a habit of wanting
to solo things much tougher than me...

Did it a week ago, easy with 4 smns, brd, nin, whm. Bit overkill though, got our scale, fought few hippogryphs. Got to flies, nin pulled them and whm had to spam heal him. All 4 smns 2hred instantly killing them, 8 bandanas, 3 sallets, 3 rings, we had some very happy people.
Smn wearring sallet is always a good laugh.
