Ouryu in Monarch Linn

  • Main Notorious Monster for the The Savage Chains of Promathia Mission.

  • Susceptible to Sleep, Silence, and Gravity. Immune to Stun.

  • Every two minutes, Ouryu will fly into the air, where he'll stay for two minutes before coming to the ground again. During this time, melee attacks will have no effect on him (magic and ranged attacks can still affect him though). While he's in the air, his normal attacks are magical, earth based attacks that cannot be absorbed by shadows, but can be reduced by damage reduction, magic defense, magic reduction, and earth resist effects (through gear, spells, job abilities, etc). While he is in the air, he cannot be slept (Sleep will land on him, but it will wear off immediately).

  • The item Mistmelt, obtained from the quest Fly High, is capable of forcing Ouryu back onto the ground once he flies into the air.

Ouryu in Riverne - Site #A01

  • Spawned by trading a Cloud Evoker to the Unstable Displacement at (I-9).

Ouryu Cometh Unstable Displacement
Ouryu Cometh Unstable Displacement

  • Has a draw-in effect.

  • Grants title: Ouryu Overwhelmer

Ouryu Special Attacks

  • Stonega III: AoE Earth based magic damage. (Circle of effect originates from spell target).

  • Break: Single target petrification effect.

  • Breakga: AoE petrification effect. (Circle of effect originates from spell target).

  • Stoneskin: Self target Damage absorption effect. (Effect can be dispelled).

  • Absolute Terror: AoE Terror effect. Targets are unable to perform any action until effect wears off.

  • Horrid Roar: Single target full Dispel and Enmity reset effects.

  • Bai Wing: AoE magic damage with an additional Slow effect. (Effect overwrites Haste)

    • Ouryu will only perform Bai Wing while in flight.

  • Typhoon Wing: AoE Darkness based magic damage with an additional Blind effect.

    • Ouryu will only perform Typhoon Wing while on the ground.

  • Ocher Blast: Strong AoE Earth based magic damage.

    • Ouryu will only perform Ocher Blast while in flight.

  • Geotic Breath: Frontal cone AoE Earth based magic damage. Damage is the strongest on anyone directly in front of Ouryu. Recommended for all tanks to stand on Ouryu's front legs to reduce damage taken.

    • Ouryu will only perform Geotic Breath while on the ground.

  • Touchdown: AoE damage. Wipes shadows. Tp move is performed when Ouryu lands on the ground after being in the air.

  • Spike Flail: Massive AoE physical damage. Absorbed by three shadows. Will only occur when a character has drawn hate from behind it.

    • Ouryu cannot perform Spike Flail while in flight.

  • Invincible: Reduces all physical melee and ranged damage to zero for the duration of the effect. Denoted by characteristic mob two-hour animation.

Ouryu in Riverne - Site #B01

  • Ouryu possesses the same abilities as he does in the Ouryu Cometh battle, though has a decidedly lower amount of HP.

Historical Information

In Chinese mythology, Huang Long (which means "Yellow Dragon") was said to be a hornless dragon that emerged from the river Luo to present the emperor Fu Xi with the elements of writing.

Said to be among the five beasts denoted in the Chinese Five Element system, along with Bai Hu (see Byakko), Xuan Wu (see Genbu), Zhu Que (see Suzaku), and Qing Long (see Seiryu), it represented the Earth element and acted as the central element.

While there is no central Element in the Japanese version of the Element system, the dragon Ouryu is said to be the japanese counterpart of Huang Long.

Ouryu's a joke
# Jun 04 2007 at 7:23 PM Rating: Decent
This guy was a joke. On Earthsday.

BLM BLM BLM NIN RDM BLU

Went in, ES+Sleep2. Freeze x 3. Brought him down to about 70%

Another ES+Sleep2. Got MP, Freeze x 3. He went to 55%.

Another ES+Sleep2. Waited too long, Ouryu woke up before freeze was done, but the ninja had had hate and tanked it like a pro for about 5 seconds.

After that, one jet stream made him give up. What a chump.

My static did this fight in 7:45 or so with this setup.

NIN (me), DRK, MNK, WHM, RDM, BLM.

No 2-hours were used, no AM, just used standard party mechanics and mistmelts.

No sleep, no nothing. We were doing a 'dry' run to see if sleep was going to be necessary and throwing mistmelts in when we needed (we had 10...2 w/ the DRK, 4 w/ the MNK, and 1 each for the rest). Our WHM ended with over 50% MP left, our BLM with over 25%, and our RDM still had a lot left.

A little advice for people trying to blink tank using this strat...starting Ouryu attacks just like any other mob with double attack. Cycling ichi and ni casts is really easy, as I didn't take any damage for the first half of the fight, but for some reason near the end he was attacking with near-hundred fists speed. From being able to *almost* tank only with utsusemi ni, I was caught with shadows down and 15 seconds on utsu: ni. Go FULL evasion if you plan on straight tanking and hope that it's enough, because I could get any debuffs to stick. With defender up he was still hitting me for 150-200ish. I was still able to survive till utsu recast was ready, but be careful near the end.

Took Ouryu down with little trouble.

Setup:
PLD/WAR
WAR/NIN
DRG/WHM
THF/WAR
BLM/WHM
WHM/BLM

When setting up a party, I highly suggest you get a PLD, rather than a NIN. Ninjas can tank this, but they have to be very good. Ouryu is fast, accurate, and powerful.

White Mage is absolutely necessary. Replace with Smn if you must, but they will likely be far too busy with healing to use Astral Flow, unless Ouryu is sleeping.

Aside from the Whm, you'll need one other person dedicated to healing, or two people who can support. Drg/Whm is actually really good for this, they can trigger healing breath with Barstone.

You can use pretty much any DD's, but you should aim for at least one strong 2HR. Also make sure they don't stand behind Ouryu, lest they trigger a Spike Flail.

Aside from all that, you must have a sleeper. We tried taking BRD once, but apparently he is very resistant to Lulluby; He wouldn't stay down for more than 20s at a time.

Bring mistmelts. Being the logical weak link in the party, I, the THF, farmed up all our melts, sometimes duoing with my DRG buddy. We had 10 melts when we went, but won our first battle and didn't need that many. If you're not confident in an easy fight, bring at least 8. Also, I bought a few Hi-Potion tanks and Hi-Ether tanks, really cheap for the 20pots/ethers they dispense. As a result, everyone in the whole party was completely full of meds.

When fighting, he'll use Stoneskin right at start, always. Dispel it or break it down. If you have a THF, have him/her charge SATA and use Hide before anyone gets aggro, and use it on the tank after Stoneskin breaks. Mid-fight just split SA and TA, but be careful with SA, it could trigger Spike Flail and kill the whole PT. Wear some Crow Gear and basically just be cautious about it.

He'll also spam Slowga and Stonega II, but they rarely do much damage, usually hit me for about 150 with Barstone up. Geotic Breath does a TON of damage, but less if the person being hit is not direcly facing Ouryu; have the tank stand on one of his legs. Radiant Breath is another painful one, spam cures quick if you see it, and Silena the tank. Aside from those, the worst move is Absolute Terror, which terrorizes the tank and prevents any actions for a short time.

Those are the worst abilities he'll use while on the ground, he'll do other, stronger ones if you let him stay in the air. Never, ever let him stay in the air. He does way more damage and some abilities (Ocher Blast for one) simply with crush a PT. Also note, he can't be slept in the air.

Have melees use strong 2HRs at around 65~75%, to push him down to around 50%, and use Astral Flow if you have it, or Manafont Freeze. That should generally finish him unless he resists.

On your real run, don't be conservative with meds, use as necessary and sleep whenever needed. He'll build resistance, but not too much and keep ES Sleep available for emergencies.

On a last note, to fight Ouryu on Earthsday is death. Fight him on Windsday for an easier fight.

Ok, some friends and I just took this mutha down.
Setup:
BLM(Gideon), BLM(Kirar), BLM(Byrthnoth), NIN(Xhy), SAM/THF(Atheist), RDM/BLM(Saylen)

Our win:
We entered the BCNM, the Ninja Provoked and the RDM ES Slept Ouryu. The three BLM started casting Freeze. It went off, one of the BLMs ES Slept him. The SAM was using Mistmelts to keep him on the ground and had meditated. Waited for timer to go down and for the one Mithra BLM to get MP back. lolKirar Once we had MP, we stood and started casting Freeze. The SAM ran in and 2-houred, but due to some confusion it didn't end up working. Freeze went off, and a second BLM ES Slept him. That wore quickly, and the third BLM ES Slept him. Then we Manafonted and started casting Freeze. Freeze went off, and he wasn't dead. He came over towards the BLMs, and we scattered. Then we all just unloaded with whatever we had left and he gave up.

It is important to note that Ouryu gains sleep resistance incredibly quickly, especially if there is confusion and you have multiple sleepers spamming sleep on him. Having 4 people cast sleep on him might get him slept, but it builds his sleep resistance 4 times faster. You're better off designating some kind of sleep order.

Got him on 4th try. 1st time, we went with 2xblm, and I tried to build hate with just provoke, thinking flash would wake him up. He was only hitting me for maybe 80dmg, but much like other cop fights, he just decided he wasn't going to be easy, and resisted like 3-4 sleeps in a row and got in the air and started knocking me down for 200+ hits. 2nd time we tried straight tanking him with blm rdm whm pld drk war, but it was earth day and we got it handed to us. 3rd time just went bad, and our plan of 2x blm manafont and rdm cs nukes didn't happen as he got up in the tunnel and we couldn't get him down. 4th time we went with 3 blm, and I went in and voked and flashed and blm es+sleep2 and rdm dispell, and then 3xFreeze. He goes nuts for a bit and tries to fly, and we get him back down and slept, and I continued to voke and flash, and use hi pots were needed. 3xFreeze again, and more running around and trying to keep what little attention I had (even with +emnity jse), and a couple of more freezes and he went down.
Very easy

Finally, a CoP BCNM im 1/1 on! It was very very easy. Our formation worked well and ill post what we did:

Black mage:

By far the hardest and most important job. We used 2. They would use the Vana'diel clock and pick a time so they casted at same time I.E. its 12:30 on the clock so theyll cast at 12:45. Then they sleep (ES when u can and always sleep 2 and please have effeble capped), let everyone rest, and go again. By the time they run ouda mp it will be at 50% hp if ur doing it right. 2hr. Nuke. Dead. Stick to Freeze and sleep 2 only. When he flies stop casting and wait for him to be brought down. Yag drinks and Hi eths are advised.

Paladin (me):

NIN tanks dont work well (not to start NIN flame). Even if u do keep it on the ground hate is a big factor. BLMs will be nuking and u need as much hate control as u can get. If he flies a PLD is more likely to survive cause when in flight he goes past shadows and hits harder then usual. Never used a Hi-pot (take tho cause theyr useful in a pinch). Kept refresh up with yag drinks (2-3 i recommended) and a regen drink (weird name, get the best u can 1-2 should do it). You will start the battle by going in and grabbing as much hate as possible. Once u have let everyone come in. Spam cures on urself cause ull prolly get hit for 100+ and hes not the slowest hitter. As soon as he flies stop attacking it and just stick to provokeing and flashing. Rest when u can. Be ready for when BLMs release another volly of freeze to keep grabbin hate and spam cure. When close to death and BLMs 2hr u can use ur own 2hr to grab pemenate hate.

White mage:

Ignore everyone else unless they pull hate and get punded. Spam cure on the paladin. Rest when hes asleep. Bring Yag drinks and Hi eths. not hard but u need to just keep spamin.

Red mage (waht we used) or Bard will work:

Dispel (Finale) is a must. Use it to take down any buffs he may cast. Refresh mages. Bring the same items as white and black mages. Silence and other debuffs sept poison (if it can stick, I dont know) while its asleep.

Dragoon:

OMFG A DRG IN A BCNM BATTLE! "Dragon killer" makes em hit harder then anything else. Have em /war so that they can help bring hate down from mages with provoke. Make sure to stop attacking when mages sleep. 2hr to finish if needed and Super jump 2hred brings hate from mages (thats what he said i think but he never 2hred either).

Mistmelts:

Farm as many hippo feathers as possible. Give them all to the drg (get 4 mistmelts, we used 3) 2 feathers is 1 mistmelt. When he takes flight (be VERY careful to not use to early, its easy to do and will lose u a mistmelt. Even let the pld get hit for 200+ just to make sure its in full flgiht.) Once hes down have blms sleep and let everyone rest.

- Your only tryin to lower him to 30%; u dont need to kill

- Hell be on the ground most when you start. after he flies hell do it more frequently.

- Stone based. Is is the oposing element.

- Abilities arent to threating. Keeping silence up keeps him from casting stonega. he has a AoE but didnt hit hard. Stoneskin u gotta watch if ur rdm. When he flies (more of a hovering) he can only be hit by long range weapons and DOUBLES in attack. kiting is messy to cause he spits rocks from across the room.

- People wwerent easy to find, specialy pld. i was gonna go origonaly as white mage but switched to my main (pld) cause some1 had a whm friend who already did. Its prolly cause PLD isnt used a lot in CoP.

Good luck and i hope this has helped.

EDIT: On seraph we hold record cause we did right after a maitnece but this worked very smoothly.
1 BLM, NIN tank, and a RDM is fine

Tips to winning with a conventional party (1 BLM) without wasting gil:

1. Sleep: you need a strong Sleeper. RDM with max INT gear should do the trick - he had no resists in the second fight. BRD or another RDM for backup is very nice. Haste, Refresh, Dispel before each Freeze (Ouryu's Stoneskin), Ballad, etc. Keep Ouryu silenced. You'll know when Silence wears off because he'll cast Slowga immediately (and immediately get it off your tank!)

2. Freeze: you need 6-7 BLM Freezes to win.

3. Tank: you need a tank to keep hate off the BLM and sleepers. When sleep wears, if the BLM doesn't have MP for Freeze, this is where the tank is required. If you sleep too many times Ouryu builds resistance, so only sleep when necessary! Let your tank do his thing. If nobody is feeding Ouryu gobs of TP, Ouryu shouldn't be an issue for the tank. As NIN, I engaged at the beginning of the fight for a bit but kept my Katanas put away most of the rest of the fight.

4. WHM for healing, Barstonra and Erase. Erase for Slowga if you have a Blink tank.

5. Mistmelts: Ouryu takes to the air after he drops around 10% of his HP. 6-7 Mistmelts should be enough. An "/item Mistmelt <t>" macro does the trick and works quick, you can practice your macro on your party members without wasting them if you'd like.

6. Spike Flail = X. Ouryu was all over the place the first battle, and didn't use it. He might have the ability, but if we didn't trigger it, I don't know what would.

7. No damage over time spells or abilities, and have your melee completely disengage for sleep.

If the BLM is using meds to regain MP, they just need to be sure the tank has enough enmity to hold hate, so there's no need to rush things. If the BLM dies, it's probably over, unless you have some outstanding players.

How things went for us:

BLM / RDM / WHM / MNK / NIN / BRD

Plan was for MNK to Hundred Fists to start the fight, and then Sleep / Freeze our way through the rest. Our BLM DC'd halfway through the fight. We slept Ouryu and waited for the BLM to return, but by the time she got back, Ouryu was sleep resistant and we wiped, using up all our consumables and all but 4 of our mistmelts in the process.

NIN did fine blink tanking when Slowga was erased and Hasted / Marched, Ouryu's normal melee attacks from the ground are no big deal with capped evasion gear.

NIN was also able to keep hate off the BLM and RDM (only +4 enmity including Dorado Sushi) by spamming Provoke, Blind, Para and Slow. Sleep time allowed for a lot of enmity building. Barstonra helped quite a bit, and with an attentive WHM, there's not much to worry about.

After we lost the first fight, we decided to give it another shot instead of running back home and wasting gil on consumables. We decided to attack conventionally until the NIN lost hate. This worked fine, and when the WHM started getting low on MP, we began the Sleep / Freeze strategy at about 80%. We had the MNK boost up (during sleep) and throw in a Chi Blast after Freeze for some additional damage.

After two more rotations of this, Ouryu was at about 50% and the BLM had 0 MP. We had used our final mistmelt, and had to deal with Ouryu in the air where he couldn't be slept. At this point, it was about survival - we needed to keep Ouryu busy enough for the BLM to med back 300 MP for Freeze and then 2-hour for the final Freeze...which has a 45 second recast.

Tanking Ouryu while he was in the air sucked because he constantly did this unblinkable range attack that hit for 100-200 DMG. The WHM ended up dying due to healing the NIN from the aerial attacks, and when Ouryu touched down, the MNK engaged and started doing his best DMG. It turned out to be enough time for the BLM to cast that next Freeze spell which unexpectadly got the victory...the 2 hour wasn't needed. Fight took about 15 minutes which got us the (pointless) record.

Thanks to Corran (RDM), Winterkiss (WHM), Sirlance (BRD), Rheba (BLM), and Koga (MNK).

My party just beat Ouryu today, after three dry runs. Our setup was BLM(me), NIN, RNG, WHM, RDM, THF. Not the best jobs to have, but we won. :) We used a total of 5 mistmelts on the run we won. We opened with ES Silence by BLM and then our NIN spammed Ninjutsu with Thief SATAing him at every chance. If there was a skillchain I didn't see it because I used all my MP curing. He began to fly pretty quickly (90-95% HP). Throughout the whole fight I cast only 2 nukes, Aero (0 damage with stoneskin) and Aero II for ~85 damage. On a dry run, Freeze hit for 747 damage, and then I got owned. ^_^;
Things to know would be:
*No DoT, it's important to sleep him several times.
*He opened with Stoneskin every time we fough him.
*He uses Invincible, save TP.
*He moved around a lot but never Spike Flailed us.
*Aerial attacks cut a Ninja's shadows.
*AoE moves suck. -_-

Good luck, everyone!

I have a couple questions going into this fight as Ranger. The CoP one not the Alliance fight.
1. If any Rng that has done this can tell me how his evasion is? I have all the best gear just want to know if I could get away with some str gear instead of agi or r.acc. and r.att food instead of sushi.
2. What do you think the ideal weapon is. Was thinking of going with fire or ice arrows or acid and holy bolts. I would love to know which would be the best damage on this guy.
Thanks.

There are 2 versions of Ouryu. Alla doesn't have the 2nd one documented yet. Here's what we know about him:

He's in Riverene Site A01. You get to him through a green displacement around I9. You have to trade a R/E item to the displacement to make it stable enough to pass through. Not sure what that item is.

He drops a very nice katana for Ninja and the ore for the new DRK JSE.

you are referring to an ENM where you fight Ouryu and some worms

so in essence its still a BC fight

Actually, I don't think that battle is considered an ENM (meaning you will lose exp when you die, and won't get exp when you win). I'm not entirely sure about that, but I've heard it a few times.

Also, the item used to activate this is called a Cloud Evoker, dropped from ENMs, the only one I know that drops it offhand is Totentanz (the 18 man one in Boneyard Gully). Since you only need one Cloud Evoker to enter the battlefield with an entire alliance, and all the ENMs require each individual participating to have their own key item to enter, it seems unlikely that this is an ENM. You also apparently have a full hour to complete this BC. I'll report more if/when I do it.
RE: Watch out
# Jul 04 2005 at 4:34 AM Rating: Decent
This is NOT a ENM. It is a BCNM(sort of) that is uncapped and presumably you will use your Cloud Evoker or it will become useless once you trade it. If you die and lose EXP in the BC, you can get Raise III or else once you finish the BC or lose, you will still be in Riverne - Site #A01 where it is capped at 40 so you will only get Raise I. There are also 4 other worms and the occasional elementals that spawn in the BC. I heard only Ouryu is needed to be killed however, not sure. Anyway, the title you get after killing it is "Ouryu Overwhelmer". This is confirmed. By the way, I am not talking about PM4-2 for those of you not in the know :P. I am talking about the Ouryu BCNM in Riverne - Site #A01 where you can bring a full alliance to it, and it is capped at 75 ^^.

Just thought it was worth mentioning, we found out it had this move the other night after going back to fight him to help someone. Spike flail is used when someone behind the dragon gains hate, it deals about 600-800 damage to anyone behind the monster. Those who have fought Fanfir and Nidhogg may have memories of this move >_<.

Our LS just finished this last night(We won on our first try).
The party setup is:
smn, smn, smn, rng, rng, blm (yes we don't have a tank).
We didn't have time to farm items for mistmelt, we figured since 3 garudas should be able to keep hate and fightOuryu in mid air.
The fight went very smoothly all 3 smn opened with Astral flow, so Garuda tanked the whole time.
All in all it took us 8 Astral flows plus few minor damage.

Ouryu has a terror attack that will freeze your tank. It cannot be erased, so deal with it if it happens.

To counter the various Wing attacks, try using Baraera. You can use Barstonra if you really want to but your mages should be able to keep Ouryu silenced (RDM is great at this). Baraera cuts the damage from Bai Wing/Typhoon Wing/etc Wing.

Go farm your Hippogryph Tailfeathers for mistmelts. The most recent patch upped the drop rate. My team pulled in 10 tailfeathers / 5 mistmelts in under two hours.

Kiting isnt really neccesary, or preferable. Mismelts are really helpful for this battle, you can try to kite it without mistmelts, but it'd be a much larger gamble than you need to make. And kiting it on the ground is not that amazing, but you could do it.

Also... on Dragoon subject. Dragon Killer isnt really that helpful, a few turns lost to Intimidation is not at all worth an entire job slot, although I would like to see if Ancient Circle helps against Bai Wing and how much, might consider it for a melee's sub but I still doubt its useful enough to make a difference.
lol
