Stubborn Dredvodd Picture

Spawns on boat ride from South Landing to North Landing. When the barge screen loads and can control your character, if you see a large shadow blink behind you, he will spawn.

I was wondering if level may have anything to do with him aggroing,.. for instance a high level can run by a too weak orc and not get aggroed but if he is healing he will, I was thinking maybe I'm too high for him to aggro me just standing on the boat... does anyone know a certain level he will aggro just standing around or fishing?

I am 95% certain that you do not have to aggro him to pop him due to the fact that he popped for me while I was fishing (I am 70THF btw), and the river bank is out of normal aggro range anyways, but I will explore normal mob behavior in this situation anyways.

Normally, any mob before lv50 will aggro if it checks as "Easy Prey" or above. Notorious monsters generally ignore this rule and will aggro a player regardless of level, unless the NM is not aggressive. Stubborn Dredvodd likely follows this rule, but if he does indeed act like a regular monster, any player outside of this level range would have to rest in order to aggro him. Somepage lists Stubborn Dredvodd as lv37-38, so a player would have to be lv48 or higher for this mob to be considered "Too Weak" and give no exp.

It certainly cannot hurt to rest while you're on the barge if you're all alone, but it would suck to lose claim in this manner if you have competition. I think most people who claim you must be resting leave their character resting where they load and go afk or semi-afk, as nobody wants to sit in front of a screen for 21+ hour sessions of nothing.

Edit: My pop today jumped at me and immediately aggroed. I was standing semi-afk after killing an ooze, and I look over my shoulder and I'm being attacked!

Fought this orc today as 54RDM/27BLM. Easy fight really, just kept up the usual RDM buffs and cast dispel when Dredvodd cast his stoneskin. Gave me a heck of a fright when he jumped on though.

Only dropped the belt ;_;

Thank you, rated up. Full 24hr and still no sighting for me. A Japanese friend I camped against for 15+ hours once has just started camping this last barge ride, so I'm hitting the hay. She gave me a new pop time on Remora too: 5Jun2006 9:30AM CT (if she is in fact JST). I can't confirm the 2nd time, but if it is true, this gives us on Remora:

Jun 1 @ 2:48AM Confirmed
Jun 5 @ 9:30AM Unconfirmed
Jun 9 @ 2:25PM Confirmed

This is unverified, but this could possible shatter any possibility of a standard 21-24hr pop. I am starting to think this is 18-36hr more and more with each passing day.

Update: I camped the entire window on June 4, and I'm still camping today. June 4 was a no show. My pop on June 1 happened just before 3AM local time. This means, my lower limit on June 4 was 3PM, and my upper limit was 3AM, if the 21-24hr spawn holds true. My lower limit today (June 6) was 9AM this morning, and if he doesn't show I'll have a full 24hr loop.

This supports the theory that Eticket brought up, that it can pop while the barge is not on S>N, but it will reset.

However, a friend of mine is camping Argus currently, and this raised some questions in my head. Sure, people have camped 24+ hours with no pop. Sure, some have seen it 21hr after death. But what if the pop window is much larger than we expected? Argus and Leech King have pop timers of 18hr-36hr. Nobody to my recollection has attempted a 36hr spawn yet, and this is something I plan to try. If he doesn't pop before 3PM tomorrow, I will scrap this idea. Unfortunately, if he doesn't pop I can't confirm any pop range whatsoever due to obligations at work all weekend.

Please, do continue to post your sightings, and I will update my long post below. If we can get 2 close pops on the same server, that would help tremendously to our research as well.

Edit 6Jun2006: Added 18-36hr pop theory.

I have been camping this off and on for over 6 months, and finally had my first sighting last night. I have been noticing some correlations by reading the information posted here, and have a few theories of my own. These are only theories and data and not proven fact, so do not take them a such.

The first variable I'm going to explore is the date. The majority of pops have occured in months 7 and 10, however there are various reported sightings outside of these months, enough for me to assume that there is not a specific calendar month or season that triggers the NM.

Next the day of the week. It can be concluded that the day of the week bears no influence due to sightings many different days.

It was once thought that the moon had to be on the waxing side for the NM to pop, however recently a few posts, including mine personally, have sighted Dredvodd on the waning side. The vast majority of sightings have been on the waxing side, and perhaps the moon does factor in, however my assumption is that the moon also bears no influence.

The clock time is certainly a variable to consider. The earliest posted time was 12:15, and the latest 15:55. These are most likely times of death, so my assumption is that he can pop anytime between 11:30 and 15:00. I give these 2 times because they actually correlate with the first and last NPC statements. Also, the terrain surrounding the channel is fairly accurate to the map, and 11:30 is when you pass the channel leading to Emefea and Newtpool, and 15:00 is when you are completely clear of the final channel leading to Central Landing, almost off the map. There were times posted clearly out of this range, such as 16:00-16:30, and 17:11, but these times would put the NM off the South to North ride. I am assuming these were late pops around the 15:00 mark clocked after the boat docked. I will later post a map that marks your approximate location on the channel at key events during the ride, as this has very much interested me.

Also we have weather. It has popped in lightning, in fog, and on clear days, and there are pictures posted to prove this. Therefore we can conclude that weather is not a factor.

Knowing all of this, what seems to trigger Stubborn Dredvodd?

One idea that came up was that Orctrap factored into Dredvodd's spawn. Orctrap would occasionally "miss" a spawn off its normal 2hr pop. This was tested by TurnerBrown, and nothing was concluded. It is certainly possible, however it is common for lottery NM's to "miss" every now and then, and it is highly unlikely a NM in a completely different zone would affect our Orc.

Another idea that came up is that Dredvodd must be aggroed in order to pop, and that you must be resting on the edge of the boat. In the past, many people have rested while camping because it was the only documented method of popping it, however recently several reports, including my own, have seen it pop while standing and/or fishing. I seriously doubt you would have to aggro it to pop, especially since the land on either side is way out of normal aggro range, but if it makes you feel comfortable, it can't hurt. Note that if there is competition, it takes a few seconds to get up before you can do anything.

Let's investigate the behavior of other NMs, such as Padfoot. Padfoot is a 21-24hr pop in Lufaise Meadows, with a window every 30 minutes on the dot. It has a chance of popping every 30 minutes from the 21 hour mark to the 24 hour mark. I am not sure if Dredvodd is in actuality a 21-24 hour pop, however many accepted FFXI sites flag this NM as 21-24hr, and a post made in this very forum, quoted below, raises the possibility.

It's recorded that Stubborn only appears on the ride from South to North, that's it. I'm still sticking by my 21-24 hour spawn time, only because I have camped him during those times. Since ride from South to North only comes once an hour, you can take naps inbetween while waiting ^^. I have gotten him twice as I stated before (once at 3am, the next night at 1am), but I do not recall if there was any weather effects. I do know that he has only appeared after the NPC has "caught something on his line", but before the NPC talks again during the ride. I'll probably be camping him shortly, after I'm done lvl'ing up smn, hopefully with more info for everyone ^^.

So why is it that there are several reports of no-shows, even after 24+ hours of continuous camping? An older theory that came up was that this is a 24-72hr spawn, with 3 hour windows each day. No supportive evidence favors this, however nothing contradicts this either, so it is still very much a possibility.

**NEW** I'm also wondering where the 21-24hr window idea came from, aside from the habits of other rare notorious monsters. Argus and Leech King are an 18hr-36hr pop, and there certainly would be no reason for this one not to be. Since so few people ride the barge, getting a ToD would be difficult to do, and if you do have it, it may pop between 18-24, or you could be waiting an extra 12 hours! I am currently exporing this scenario, as I have nearly closed a 24hr possible spawn loop since my Jun1 killing, and no sighting yet.

A new theory has piqued my interest however, that it is 21-24 hours, but it can pop while the barge is on a different route. If it does this, the timer resets. The barge operates like clockwork, leaving at exact Vana'diel times from each dock. Even the guide NPC's talk at the exact same game time each day. But what is really interesting, is the fact that one game day is not equal to one real-time hour. Quoted from this post,
Quote:
(24:00:00) Hours Vanadiel Time = (0:57:36) Hours Earth Time

What this means is that the barge from South to North is actually leaving 2min24sec earlier per hour. Over the course of 24 hours (or 25 game days later), the time will remain exactly the same, meaning a barge that took off at Midnight last night will also take off at Midnight tonight, but in the case of a 21-24hr spawn, the real-time departures of the barge will not necessarily coincide with the real-time of death. The barge leaving at the 21hr mark will leave 7min38sec later (real-time) than the last pop. I have not yet timed the actual length of the South to North ride, but this ratio of error certainly accounts for at least half the trip.
Another interesting detail comes out here, though. Why is it that Dredvodd doesn't pop several times over several days, and then not show for several weeks? It is known to pop every 2 weeks, although there have been sighting after 5 days, or even after 24 hours. The above information assumes that the interval of spawn is every one hour, but in the case that it is every 30 minutes, it has a chance to fall completely out of the South to North window every single day! A 30min interval pop in a 21-24hr window would put the pop at night, while the barge is in Newtpool, thus resetting the timer by this theory. This could explain why it is so rare.

Finally, some observations that I have made in the many barge rides I've endured. It seems Phanauet Channel is actually one map covering all routes, instead of seperate maps for seperate routes. I know this because the same features can be seen on completely different routes, such as the waterfall on the main canal being seen as you enter Emefea Waterway, or the 2 Orc stone-like structures that you see on Newtpool being seen while exiting Emefea. Also, the junctions that are travelled on by multiple routes remain exactly the same. This would support the theory listed above, as the map would be active with the barge being on another part of the map.

Of course, we could all be wrong. Could be 100% random. No other mob pops like Stubborn Dredvodd, and a 100% random NM would definetely be a first for SE.

Please continue to post your times of death as read by /clock. If you get multiple pops within a few days on the same server, that info will help tremendously, especially if it pops completely out of its expected window, shattering the 21-24hr idea.

I think there is a relation with the months, the majority of sightings are around the middle months which also seem to be the months for thunder activity... althought the 12 month isn't exactly a thunderous month, there is a possibility that there was abnormaly Thunder activity during that time frame throughout some areas, although the mob doesn't always appear under thunder weather he may still follow the abnormal thunder activity.

I would also like to know if anyone has checked with the weather people and see what they say before each boatride if possible, I am going to start doing that and I would be interested in what they have to say about the weather in that area to see if there is a relation

27 hours straight and no mob, then I look at the month and I notice it's about half way through the 9th month so that means I have been camping him on a months that he normally doesn't spawn.
I could wait for the 10th month but as I was getting off the moon was starting it's decline so I doubt I will be able to find him unless I get on closer towards the end of the month which is not a good spawn time for him either.
I think it would be best if I just camp the other NMs that I've been meaning too and by the time I finish hopefully it will be the right conditions for the stubborn A**hole.

Looking back on my time camping him so far and the previous posts here, I think his spawn conditions are much simpler then we are led to believe.

I think he has a 21-24 hour window as noted elsewhere. The problem is, when his spawn time comes up in that window, if the boat isnt on the right route then his spawn is voided til the next window. That would explain why he can go for days without popping. That's my theory on it at least.

I'm coming to support this conclusion.
The S-N barge runs from 10:15 to 15:50. that makes ~5.5/24 of a day in potential spawn time. How long his spawn window is open for doesn't matter. During that time the max chance he has of popping is 23% if he is reset whenever he pops outside his window. So, assuming you happen upon him and kill him, the best chance you have of seeing him again is around 20%. If he misses his pop window (assuming you know how long it is), then you have about twice that the next day. Then twice again. So, even a ToD would be near-worthless. There would be a mere 20% chance of him popping every day. Talk about suck.

The South to North Barge runs about every 30-45 minutes though, so he has about 4-6 chances of popping between that 3 hr Time frame. There has to be some other factors in with his spawn. Just my opinion.

Been camping this nm for about a week and a half with no luck. I havent been on 24 hours a day but at least 4-6 hours each day which i think is plenty time devoted to camping. Also im lvling fishing there so its kinda killing two birds with one stone. So any way i got on today march/30/2006 only planning to be on for a hour or so, so i do the usual fish and camp. Not even on 20 min and he pops. The thing is 90% of the time im on the boat im by myself. But today a 75 blm happend to get on. So he litterlly jumps on the boat right next to me and i panic. I was trying to hit my dia macro but hit refresh instead. Thought for sure blm was gonna claim but he just stood there watching. So finly get dia off and claim =). Im was there as a 62 rdm/blm easy fight. He did use stoneskin but it didnt do much for him. He didnt even wear my stoneskin. He dropped gargoyle boots and tanthulum belt. I was going for the ring but 2 out of three isnt bad. So any way srry for long post but i did write down time and day for all those trying to find a pattern so here it is. And just to add me and the blm were both standing when he jumped on. so u dont need to be resting. As i said it was march/30/06<darksday> game time was 13:00 first quater moon (55%) and was a calm day no lightning. And for all those in USA it was 11:30am est. Hopes this helps and good luck to u if yor camping him.

Figured id do what i can to help pin down spawn on this little bugger, so heres what happened with me:

On boat as 75 DRK/NIN and trying to camp Vod. It was daytime so i figured id just ride the boat until nighttime again, when Stubborn hopped onto the boat. I wasn't resting, so I can confirm this is not needed for a spawn. This was on the ride where Ineutenience (sp?) is fishing, and talking about his grandon. When Stubborn hops aboard the NPC starts screaming "O-o-orc!"

I -think- he does aggro, but i was all over him too fast to tell. Stubborn is a Drg/whm, as he will Call Wyvern immediately. Also, he cast stoneskin on himself. He popped little over halfway through the boatride so i took no chances and popped Souleater right off. He never once got through my utsusemi. I used rampage with souleater for a little over 1300 damage, which took half his health bar. Id estimate his hp at 3000, 3200 tops. Drops were carcet ring and tathlum belt. Wish i could do more to help, but you do NOT need to rest, and he pops during the daytime on Inetuience's boat, of this im certain. GL to those that try and camp him.
Yup, got him.
