Much Harder Than His Level
# Jul 16 2008 at 7:59 AM Rating: Decent
This guy is a real *****, I suspect he is around lvl 45 but a very tough one. I had a pop at him just now as a lvl 55 DRK/THF. He has very high defense, casts Invincible and does quite alot of damage too. Worst of all though he seemingly has an unlimited MP pool. He uses Cure III more quickly than I could Stun or Weapon Bash so I tried using Aspir alot thinking I could kill of his magic supply, but it didn't stop him. In the end I had to use Sleep quite frequently. (Which fortunately sticks almost every time at around 150 enf skill)

If I had RDM subbed Im sure this would have been alot easier. But if you cant interrupt or silence his magic this is a very long fight for anyone below lvl 60.

He didn't drop the shield, or anything else for that matter. He isn't worth the effort.

with all of the maintances, that helped get the pop timer for it. so after all of them, i would be there about 21 hours after it. it seemed after the maintances, it was a bit early. they must of ended early and still cut off access to the game. ANYWAYS...finally got it today. 1/4 i think. had a 75 THF w/ thief knife w/ me. ToD on shiva is 4:20 EST

Ever since BLM was my highest and only job up at 30 I have had this shield on my wish-list. It didnt take until BLU 56 till I started seeing some possibilities of getting it (at least if camping solo). First time I was there checking for him someone else got claim, there was 2 ppl apparently camping the NM, but I got an idea how strong he was. My plan was to come back and have my NPC ready, however something else came inbetween and doing some other things all of a sudden I was 61.
Last maintenance it was time for a more serious try.
First time: no one else around. He poped half an hour before the time I expected and me and my NPC killed him quite easy. No drop.
20 hours later I was there again, this time being BLU/THF and had my sons character a THF 45 logged on, in pty and put on /follow. He poped exactly 21 hours after. No drop.
Third time - no drop.
Fourth time I came home from work a little later then 21 hours after and ran around 3 hours without even a glimpse. He probably had poped before I came on, which meant I could at least do an estimation of next time.
Now it started to be a little harder and to make things worse I all of a sudden had 3 others there running around looking for him; a war a mage and a nin. Because of the competition I didn't have time to log on my son and set him up, when he poped just in front of me and I got claim. One of the others had just passed by. No drop though.
By this time I thought that maybe the single Quadav Veteran that pops in the area had something to do with him, but I seen now that he pops anyway even if you leave them alone. If you run like in a triangle with point down I have never seen him pop along the top road but always on the sides. The first time I got him he was in the top right corner though, other times along the right side or on the upper part of the opening to the left from Beadeux.
It started getting hard to follow his times, messed with my worktime too lol, but somehow I was there again. Then just before it was time someone else turned up, 10 minutes later Bo'Who too and I missed. Well, got ToD...
Day after: got him but no drop. Camped for a week now. Hmm...
Now followed two pops that I simply missed because of time. One was too early in the morning (probably something like 03:00 in the morning); I still woke up a bit early to check but he must have poped. Second time I had to log before he had poped. One of the other campers were there and got him later. We had started talking to each other.
Then next time we became even more campers, one RNG with wide-scan (which I don't trust myself when competing with others) and a THF 75 and two of the guys from before and this time the war and his mage friend got claim AND drop. At this point I was ready to give up (and I have been camping Jaggedy Eared Jack for a Rabbit charm before) but it was just too much; you're fighting time, drop-rate and other campers. Of course there is people that go 1/1, I have done that myself on Valkurm Emperor and Stray Mary, but mostly I think this is a truer picture of what it is like.
But then something happened - the guy who just got drop offered to come and help next day. I still wasn't sure - was gonna pop an hour after getting from work and wife was away so I was alone with my daughter. I gave it a last try though and believe it or not got a tell from the guy short after "/inv to join party" and not long after that I got my Tortoise Shield!
1/freakin 6 and at least 5 misses. A little bit lost now since I had everything focused on this NM for the next few days too but it feels great and thank you, thank you, Akkarin who helped even after already getting drop. That is a really rare/ex friend to have on friendlist.

ok I started camping this dude right after last maintenace.

I'm now 4/6 on claims and 0/4 on drops, didnt kow wasn't 100%... but we are going to less than 20%

ok, first time I ran there 20hr 45min after the time i knew maintenance ended, was already up (O_o), got claim, no drop.

second time, went there 20:30 after my last kill, popped right at the 21hrs bell, got claim, no drop.

third pop I couldnt get there 'cose I was at work, went back home and wasnt there anymore.
so I had some hour gap for pop on the day after

4° time, as always, got there, claim, kill, no drop

5° time, got there (got help from a thf with TH2), claim and no drop (wtf...)

6° time (today) I woke up before going to work just to get him, completed the log-in stuff 21hr 1min after tod, the **** Bo was already there CLAIMED!!

at least I got tod....

EDIT: btw all it dropped in 4 fight was a total of 163gil

Never thought this would be so pain in the ***, i camped the NM for 12 hours yesterday, not knowing the ToD then a few guys show up (guess they DID know the ToD >.>) and shortly after they got claim.
Well there was one positive thing about this, i got the ToD, so the next day (today) i came back after 20 hours (one hour ahead of pop) and it pop'd on the way other side then last time.. so ran as fast as i could and it was standing there.. unclaimed {/hurray}
After a long fight and i'm glad i pulled out my NPC, being WHM64/RNG6, cus it could have ended differently, used an Ether and Hi-Potion, but i got it and 41 gil!
Thank you everyone for your comments, hope you get it aswell if your camping it!

I realise this is a long shot - but has anyone on the Fenrir server killed Bo'Who recently? Yup, I'm asking for a ToD - I've rode down to passhow about 10+ times (at least!) on the off chance that I might catch him lurking around but I know my chances are infinitesimally low. The faerie shield just doesn't cut it! Anyone, help? ;_;

Hi, I'd like to share my experience with Bo'Who, perhaps it will be helpful to others. If you're reading this, you are probably drooling for a tortoise shield (TS). When I first saw it almost a year ago, I knew I had to have it. Why?

First and foremost it's a shield that a BLM or SMN can wear. Secondly, not only that but it's a **** good shield, as it boosts INT, MND, and MP. With the exception of endgame shields, I'd say this is the best mage shield, except for maybe the Holy Shield for WHM.

The fact is at lvl 30, and up to lvl 51, where elemental staves are available, a BLM or SMN will probably be wearing clubs/wands most of the time. That's because clubs have the INT+ and MND+ stats. Staffs have HP/MP+ and higher damage, but in most cases a INT+5 club is much better than a MP+5 staff. So since you naturally use club, that leaves you with the shield slot open, and why not top it off with another INT+/MND+ item?

For a SMN, a staff is a better weapon than a club, but how often does any mage melee? As a SMN, you'll be asked to heal a lot, so MND+ gear can make up for the fact that, you know, you're not a WHM. If you're main healing, you should be using a club with MND+ anyways, you don't need the MP+ staff!

As for post-51, well, elemental staves are popular, but if you use a lilith rod or a fey wand as BLM, you can still use the TS and have INT+8 off the weapon and shield alone. These two clubs also have MP drain, good for skilling up and meleeing a NM if sleep/AM is not an option.

Of course unless you're good at pestering your LS, by the time you can get this yourself, the prime time to use the TS (30-51) may be over for your mage job. So what good is it then? How about level capped events? BCNMs, missions, CoP, etc. Unless you xp all day, you'll run into events that put you back in those 30/40/50 mage shoes. The TS will come in handy.

Have I sold you on how great the TS is yet? I know, I know, this thread is about Bo'Who, not his drop, but before we go into him, you need to decide if the drop (TS) is worth your time. If you agree with me, read on.

Like most timed spawns with 21-24hr timers, don't bother camping it anyday. Although you can force yourself to stay awake for 24 hours, you cannot be actively checking widescan, or worse, running around, every 5 minutes for 24 hours straight. It's physically impossible, and you'd quit the game if you tried. The only way to do it is by having a good idea of the spawn window.

The easiest way is to start after server maintanence. Bo'Who spawns almost always 21 hours after maintenance. In my experience (5 spawns), he can be early and he can be late. It's important to be there about 1 hour early, then wait 1-3 hours after spawn. He might be off by about 15 minutes. Once he was a no-show, but he was most likely claimed early before I arrived.

So when you see a PlayOnline spam about server maintanence, mark your calendar. And know when it ends. They'll tell you when maintenace is supposed to end, but find out for yourself, try to be there when the game is first back online. Then 21 hrs later is the pop time for Bo'Who.

Now, often this pop time may be when you're not available to play (i.e. work, school, etc). This is extremely frustrating, and you have to account for it. Every kill of Bo'Who you miss, the next spawn is more uncertain. From my experience, he is usually killed within 3 hours of pop. It is fair to say that in 3 hours, there will be at least 1 high level player that spots him and kills him. So let's do some examples.

Server is back up Sunday noon. The pop would be Monday 9AM. If you can't make it at that time, then the ideal time for next pop is Tuesday 6AM, assuming he is killed instantly on pop. Regardless of what happens, you would never look for him on Tuesday before 6. However, Bo'Who could have been hanging around for 2 hours before someone killed him. That means your Tuesday spawn can range from 6AM to 8AM, or maybe longer. If you miss out on Tuesday's pop, then Wednesdays pop will be even more of a mystery. Suffice to say, uncertainty adds up so fast it won't worth your time to try, and you have to wait til next maintenence for another try, hoping the pop time fits your schedule.

Now then, what do you do when waiting for pop? If you have a melee job 60+, or a mage job 70+, you can sub /rng level 1 and use widescan while sitting on a chocobo. This is a 95% gaurantee you'll get him before anyone else, certainly random bystanders. If you have rng leveled, then it's not a problem, but if not, a lvl 1 subjob will dramatically reduce your abilities.

You can also just run around his spawn area (shown in most maps of the marshes) until you see him. The advantage is you can use your subjob instead of going /rng 1. The disadvantage is your claiming ability is no better than anyones, and worse than a BST or RNG. However, even 21 hrs after maintenence, I have found almost always no competetion. This is very undercamped, so you shouldn't worry about competetion too much. I advise against /rng. If there is another camper, try to team up, if not, worst case scenario he claims Bo'Who but you still know time of death by waiting for him to finish. If you actually try this right, after maintence, there's a very good chance you'll get him.

Battle stradegy? I fought him as 60WHM/1RNG and 56BLM/28WHM, both times with lots of yag drinks, ethers, rice cake, and even INT potion. As WHM/RNG I never finished him off by myself. My lack of SJ required assistance regardless of meds. As BLM, I barely finished him using Sleep2/Burst/Sleep2/Debuff method. Normally it would have been easy, but the new patch makes it so if you take too long killing a NM, they get really hard near the end. Basically I'd get him down to 20% health in 20 minutes, then 40 minutes staying alive and keeping him from spamming Cure 3 while healing MP. If you choose to melee, try the Shellbuster. It does lighting damage versus Quadav. If you can get help from friends/LS, by all means do it.

One of the reasons its so undercamped, besides the 21hr timer, is the drop rate. I am 1/5 on the TS. Treasure Hunter is invaluable. Even if you can make it to every pop all week, it's still frustrating to have to wait 21hrs for another shot.

I spent a whole month shouting in Jeuno and Whitegate everyday an hour a day for his ToD, and never got 1 response. I've found less than 10 people server wide with a TS, and when asked when/how they got it, they all respond that they just walked by and saw him, and got it on the first drop. I hate those stories! So if you want the TS, follow my guide! Nobody bothers trying for this, so if you do, it's all yours. Work smart for it and eventually you'll have one of the best non-endgame items in the game! And you'll smile everytime someone checks you and ask you where you got that shield.

Good luck!

This NM is similar to Shikigami Weapon in that it more or less pops 21 hours to 21 hours and 15min from its TOD. My wife and I were killing it for the shield, and we had some poor luck and went like 2/10 or so. So, in 10 kills, it pretty much followed the pattern of popping within 15 minutes after 21 hours.
