Historical Information

In Scottish folklore, the Maighdean Uaine (which translates roughly to "Green Lady") was a spirit, in the guise of a woman dressed in green, that warned about impending death, akin to the Irish Banshee (see Banshee).

In Welsh legend, the Maighdean Uaine was a spirit that intermingled with the ivy of the Caerphilly Castle, and did not share with its Scottish counterpart's ability to foretell death.

Claimed this thinking it was a normal sapling on my way back from mining in Oltdon while i was nuking for grain seeds. When it didn't die after me using Fire I realized the name was different lol. I got the Optical Earring too, guessing it's 100% drop.
i still want a stinger.

I stumbled on it at I-6 but before I could engage it some japanese player beat me to it. Luckily for me he was not strong enough to win. He died leaving it with hardly any life. After he died I killed it with two hits and got my nice new optical earing. And yes I would have helped if he would have disengaged but he never did so I don't feel bad about the kill stealing.
Finally popped

Managed to get him to pop after 2 hours of killing PHs. Spawned at (I-6) right by the ramp up Zegham Hill where there are a series of trees, and 1 tree on the path up (almost dead center of I-6). I can not verify this, but I think the PHs are the Walking Saplings in (I-6) near that ramp. After killing the main Walking Saplings in northern (I-6) and (I-5) for 1 3/4 hours I started to also kill the lower (I-6) Walking Saplings and he popped.

First attempt I engaged and fired my Combo macro which caused POL to crash. Rushed back in to find I still had 62HP left. Rested that to full while worrying that someone else would nab him. Once I got to full I engaged and fired off Hundred Fists. Ended the fight with 102/205HP as level 12 Monk, earned 50exp. I was hitting for 11-15/hit (hume), and was getting hit for 12 each of his attacks. I definitely would not have won without Hundred Fists. So now I have a lovely Optical Earring for my new character.
What level is it?

I just spent a total of about 7hrs camping this thing as BST/THF for the first 3, then BST/WHM as the last 4. All NMs have a specific section of where they will show up on Widescan that's divided by other mobs within a small section or vast location differences. This includes the PH mobs. So the whole time I was trying to find which section of the scan it'd spawn out of.

If you look at the map on FFXI-Atlas.com or whatever site, and see where they have circled for this NMs spawn, there is a certain section of scan where there are 5 saplings spread out between I-5 and J-6 (covering the area thats circled on the maps). These saplings were NOT the PH mobs for me. Above where they'd be listed on scan is another group of saplings (4, maybe 5 of them) that are spread out between H-6 and I-6. And they have never spawned beyond those 2 grids, at least not that I've seen. The NM was shown as the last (bottom) of the 4 saplings group, and spawned at the side of the mountain in the southern portion of I-5 ground level.

Assuming that what people say about it spawning at J-6 is true, that would mean that either the NM alone has a really wide spawn/roaming range, or that the NM or PH can spawn amongst any of the sapling groups on wide scan in that area. Which would make it something like Megalobuggard if it does. But seeing as how easy it is to locate the other recently added starting area NMs, I doubt SE would make this one as complicated as Megalo.

I spent the first 3 hours killing only the 5 saplings group within the circled area. Then today, I spent another 3 hours doing the same thing. No pops at all, but during the last hour, I decided to kill off the other group I mentioned at H/I-6 as well. Then what happens after 2 or 3 cycles of those kills? The sapling NM pops and I get the earring.

My Experience

Well, this was a long time ago but I guess I'll tell my story (I accidentally pressed Clear Form, this one won't be as good ><).

I was levelling DRG, and I read that one of these earrings would be useful. I'd never camped a NM before, but I decided to go and get out my WHM30 and give it a try, because I thought it might be fun to hunt a NM, and I'm a sucker for Rare/Ex stuff :P I went to Gustaberg and started killing tons of saplings.

Then, after an hour of camping, I logged. Got back on, and did another hour and a half, and find I have competition, a THF20 levelling his DRK. Well, long story short, I get a /tell from him saying that he found it, and needs help.

So there I was, with the little devil and angel on my shoulders, and I had no idea what to do. But, eventually my kindhearted WHM side won over, and I went and tossed a couple Cure IIs on him. He won, and got the drop. He understood how I felt, so he gave me 100k and told me he'd help me kill placeholders for the next hour. After a stop in Bastok, we went back out hunting. Within 5 minutes of starting again... BAM! It pops. I was fricking amazed. We killed it, and I got my earring. I learned my lesson for the day: Good deeds bring rewards. A big thanks to Alcon! ^^

I stopped levelling DRG at 19, but I've kept that earring in my safe this whole time.

Just camping this for sport. From the numerous posts I read, I was expecting a pop in I-5, I-6, or possibly J-5. And surprise, it pops on the little grassy area w/ trees in the NW corner of J-6. So, if you're camping this awkwardly named creature, don't neglect J-6 :p

Btw, my ex gf was into vampires and mythology and I've seen this NM's name somewhere before. So, I think it has to do with something like that. Something about a half woman/half beast, eh, I don't remember. Could be way off base. anyways....

Finally got it to spawn for me. I camped it today for an hour after camping it, without success, the previous day for 3 hours. It spawned in top left of I-5, just west of the road. For those that do this without widescan, don't give up you'll get it eventually. ^^b

Oh now see that's interesting. So he can pop on top of one of those hills too then. Perhaps that's why a few of you were unable to find it.

I have to reiterate, Wide Scan is immensely helpful for this NM.
Just got.

Hello everyone. I just finished camping this NM, and it is honestly a pain in the a$$ without widescan. The pop area seems to be (I-5) and (I-6), the only form of testing this i can confirm would be that I was able to pop the NM by only killing saplings in these two grids. Time elapsed was just over an hour. I used my 66WAR as main, believing that it is indeed a 100% drop, and subbed RNG for widescan. Widescan makes this NM much easier. After aproximately 62 saplings, I saw his name on widescan. Track > Provoke > Engage > Mistral Axe for 456 > Optical Earring.

Since I am like many others who are frustrated I'm hoping to get some more information about this guy. If anyone reads this and ends up killing this NM, could you please report the day, time, and moon of the kill or pop?

I too have spent many hours seeking this mob for the earring however have came up short of patience. I have to wonder if there's a "trick" or a special condition to popping this guy.
Woot

I've been "camping" this thing for nearly 3 hours now, and I haven't so much as seen it once. I'm starting to lose patience, what am I doing wrong?

I've been reading a lot of confusion on this NM. So here's my experience with it.

Myself and two LS members decided we wanted this earring for our umpteenth trip through the dunes. We knew where it spawned, just not how often, and figured we'd find out for ourselves.

Long story short we all got our earrings in about an hour and a half. He is a lottery spawn. Every time a Walking Sapling (within its spawn area, which seems to be I-5 and I-6) is killed, there is a chance this NM will spawn in its place. It's extremely easy to do this with Wide Scan, even a Lv1 Beastmaster Wide Scan will suffice. If you don't have access to it, then stick around I-5 and I-6 and kill the saplings there, it'll spawn eventually, just look for the ungodly long name.

And if it's not a 100% drop, it's either very close or we just got lucky since we're 3/3.

Just camped this guy as RDM55. It took 3 hours to spawn him, but I finally got it, not to mention 3 stacks of grain seeds and a stack of vegetable seeds (which will sell nicely). I can't wait to use this on my DRK. It will be nice to have the acc+ since I'm going with Great Sword, and once I hit 18, this combined with my Braveheart will give me +6 acc. Too bad DRK can't use battle gloves. BTW, I found him at
the very bottom of I-5 grid, in the middle of the path. Good Luck, its an easy camp if you've got the time, I didn't have any competition.

pop time
# Jan 22 2006 at 11:36 AM Rating: Decent
I've tried camping this twice. First time was 2 hours second time was only an hour, but I still didn't see it. First time I'd gather all the saplings as blm and kill them all at once, second time I picked them off one at a time with thf. All I got was a 4 stacks of grain seeds, 1 stack of vegetable seeds, and 5 stacks of treant bulbs. Go me.
