Background:

Taisaijin is widely believed to be a joke-NM based on an in-joke that isn't commonly known among English-speaking players. The Red Mage magic spell Refresh was introduced to Final Fantasy XI in the February 5, 2003 update.

At the time Refresh was introduced, the methods and locations for obtaining the scroll were still largely unknown. As the story goes, before the whereabouts of Refresh became known, one Japanese Red Mage claimed that he had gotten a Refresh scroll as a drop from a Taisai in Ranguemont Pass. The rumor eventually spread, and for a period of time, Taisai were being farmed constantly for the scroll. The truth is, that Red Mage lied. Refresh is not, nor has it ever been, a drop from Taisai. That Red Mage had discovered one of the actual methods for obtaining Refresh and proceeded to monopolize that source, profiting from the advantage since there was no competition for it and everyone was deceived into farming Taisais.

This incident would give rise to an in-joke among Japanese players. When another player asked where to find a newly introduced item that no one yet knew how to obtain, a common phrase became: "I found it on a Taisai".

Taisaijin drops a Scroll of Refresh and Spelunker's Hat, a piece of equipment called the "Anti-Optical Hat" due to it having completely opposite stats to the Optical Hat, which also drops from a Hecteyes mob. Square-Enix added the Refresh drop as irony, where, if players do not kill Taisai for a long enough time, Taisaijin, a mob which does actually drop the scroll, will appear. Spelunker's Hat was likely added as a nod to the fact that people were farming Taisai, which had no useful item, meaning Taisaijin has nothing a player would want (besides as a trophy item, though the title itself, Bye-Bye, Taisai, can be considered a trophy).

I'm happy because Taisaijin will appear at midnight that none of the Taisai are killed and to be at the screen the exact moment that Taisaijin popped, and pinned things down, Campina.

Yes, it is roughly 24 hours, but it's a bit longer than 24 hours since it spawns at midnight Vana'diel time.

This isn't true, I was actually reading through these posts waiting for Taisaijin to pop.
I'd arrived on Firesday, about 7:00 Vana time and all there was were 3 Taisai's up. I'd decided to wait until midnight Vana'diel time then leave as I had no ToD.
While reading these posts, I heard the sound of aggro so flicked back to FF and there was Taisaijin wailing on me.
It was about 15:00 Firesday and I was back in Whitegate before it had even hit midnight.

Turns out a 58 Monk can't take this out. :P
Hey, I had to try. XD Got it down to 85% before I had to run. Unfortunately, my NPC didn't stop attacking, and quickly paid the price. >.>;

Doesn't despawn/respawn like I've heard of other NMs... Just very slowly walks/slithers (?) back to where it came from.

A 75 RDM eventually came by and took it out. No hat drop, sadly.
No hat

Just wanted to confirm something. I just killed this mob. I solod it as 75 bst. Very easy for CC to just beat it down. I did not get the hat drop, but REFRESH did drop of this mob. No real money, but I have cool new title for a few days
Gotta <3 the title!!
# Jul 08 2007 at 2:25 PM Rating: Decent
Well I'm 0/10 for hat drop, and me and my friends have been trying and trying to camp this thing over the last couple of months to get me the hat,
BUT hey I <3 showing off the title, just want the hat to go with it now hehe.

I can only say that after 10 tries it has been a long, long road as you always get those f*****S that just kill the Taisai for the sake of it, even though you are standing there waiting for it to spawn.

The worst one was when Taisaijin was 5 mins from spawning (and yes I had killed it 24hrs prior and it was due!!) and this silly silly BRD75 comes along, This BRD then examines me and my friend and /em laughs ... then proceeds to kill all 3 of the Taisai. When I angrily asked WHY?? she said.... well I'm 0/2 and well I didnt want you to get it!! Well.... you can guess the rest of my conversation, before she cowardly warped out and logged off.

Well... surprisingly enough I was exping the following day and she just so happens to join the party i'm in. Unknown to her all the other members of the party were all my friends and they were all aware of what happend the night before. Despite that we wanted to exp, so we left it as is and proceeded to lvl, but after the first mob we realised that not only was she a bad sport with NM's but she was also an exp leech!!
Well... with the next mob we all just decided to start the fight then half way through we disbanded that leech and just stood there /em laughing as she got her *** wiped to good effect. to and another smile to our faces, she also de-lvled and had to HP after asking several times for a raise and not getting one lol.

What goes arond comes around haha!!!

With that in mind..... That hat will be mine, oh yes it will lol
got drop after long fight

lvl 66 rdm/20 blm, i was bored and ran by to see if he was up last night. blm sub so i could warp out. really wasn't expecting it to be up because it never fricken it. to my surprise rounded the corner to find taisaijin, pulled with dia then buffed as fast as i could, before any buffs it would hit me for about 50-80 damage, after protect and phalanx it was down to about 20-30 damage, wasn't too difficult to debuff, but seemed immune to sleep >.< after the first convert he stuck a nasty lil hexeyes on me which eventually wore with enough time for me to rebuff and rescue myself, and out of mp with a few minutes left till convert. so i bound and stepped away, kiting with bind a gravity till convert. got back into the game meleeing long enough to realize that that strategy was a serious loosing battle, with about 7 minutes till convert, yellow hp, and less then half mp i started kiting again, doting with what spare mp i can trying to last till my next convert, at which point taisaijin was at about 2/3rds hp. i began to DoT it from afar but was still managing to run out of mp faster then i would get convert back. and healing mp while it was bound ended up reclessly getting my agro from nearby stirges. (ones down the hall by the scorpion) after about 20-30 minutes of attempting to recover my footing i realize i'm still struggling so i take a chance to get back into melee immediatly after a convert neglecting barparalyze and barblizzard and keepin up the basic buffs, while ensuring it was silenced and debuffed i managed to make it to convert, grab my footing and took about another 30 minutes eating 3 more hexeyes and 2 death rays in the mean while, but nothing was too dastardly, 1/3 attempts to cast through paralyze will work so just keep attempting regaurdless and the paralyze isn't too bad. so all in all became an hour long fight which i finnally one and went 1/1 on spelunkers hat ^^ i'm now wearin it everywhere :D

I was on my way to Dynamis-Beaucedine as DRG75/WAR37 and took a detour to see if I can catch a glimpse of this NM.As I ran up I saw a lvl 75RDM/NIN (he had great gear)dead but nothing else. Then heard a weird sound like squishing then *boom* ~The Taisaijin hits Theinen for 56 points of damage!~ I knew I couldn't zone it so I engaged.
It was a long fight and though his ACC and DEF were pretty good he spent a lot of time casting "Refresh" and "Aspir".
I finally killed it thanks to a well timed "Super Jump", a Crit and a "Jump"
Never used my 2 hour but I was close.Finished the fight with 148/1339 HP.

No Hat but I got a sweet new title,a Scroll of Refresh and 28 exp.

Killed him as a 75PLD/37WAR. By the time he died I was well in the yellow and outta mp... he kept DoTs on me the entire fight. I would suggest going /NIN. Which I should have done, but I wasn't planning on killing him when I saw him. No hat though :(

Taisaijin is Japanese for either "grand festival god", "king of the grand year", "grand festival", or "large age".

Here's my story.

After a lost Promyvion Holla, and getting borred, I felt the need to go there and see if this NM is up.

PLD/WAR, as I think he's lvl40 or so. You can imagine what happened. Even with my Kinkobo and some Spirit Takers, I died at 21%. Not bad after all.

No way, I want my revenge !
PLD/WHM, some Yagudo drinks just in case, full buffs, Stoneskin, Blink etc...
Paralyna really helped me, even if it was really hard to cast it. I ran away every time he attempted to cast an Ancient Magic (yes he does lol), but let my shadows and Stoneskin absorb the -ga spells. Everything went well, some Cure IV saved my elvaan ***. Yagudo drinks have been really useful too.
As a PLD with an Assault Jerkin, the rest being Adaman, it was hitting me from 40 to 90, and soem Criticals landed for 120. I evaded many shots, so his Accuracy is definitely not his best weapon lol.

If you plan to fight him as PLD, get ready, the fight can last 30min (my food wore off just when I killed him lol )

Only the refresh scroll dropped, that's too bad.

But now, I have an awesome Title !!!

My experience with Tai
# Feb 22 2006 at 8:59 AM Rating: Decent
My experience was contrary to what has been posted. I actually killed one of the taisai's and later aggro'd jin as i was running through looking for the ??? for NPC quest. As i was running through the taisai area I hear the awful sound of aggro and I am thinking "WTH I am level 72." It tried to cast burst on me but was interrupted by my wyvern's attacks. Eventually got owned by paralyze so I hp'd back to sandy, picked up some x-pots and au laits, choco'd back and engaged for round two.

The second fight was fairly odd though I went and owned it. Wasn't much of a battle as it didn't cast paralyze the entire battle as opposed to twice in the first round. Gonna try this again tomorrow at the 24hr point as I suspect no first round victory, no hat. The actions of the mob from the first to the second battle were polar opposites, I was parrying attacks and didn't get a single paralyze casted. It was almost as if it was a completely different NM /shrug.
Campin it out!!
# Jan 06 2006 at 9:19 PM Rating: Excellent
In my opinion this hat is the sign of a true hardcore skill-up person!!

Im one of the few ppl i know that actually sit there for hours and camped this thing cause im a skillin addict!!! heh
SO... here's a full recap of spawn conditions

1.) noone can kill the placeholders... if someone kills the placeholders the spawn time is completely messed up making it pop anywhere from 24-72 hours instead of a consistent 24hr since ToD pop if noone kills anything... 24-72 makes mathmatical sense btw... there are 3 placeholders... 24 x3 = 72 -> Taisaijin pops and 1 PH is gone -> 2 remain and 24 hrs later another turns into Taisaijin -> 1 remain and 24 hrs later the last turns into Taisaijin -> TOTAL TIME: 72 hrs.

2.) It IS a 24 hours pop as long as noone kills any of the placeholders... One of the PH's despawns and Taisaijin respawns in their place.

3.) It can drop the Spelunker's Hat but is rare drop and I myself still have not obtained it... (hopefully tomorrow)

4.) The name of the mob actually hints at the spawn conditions... One translation of Taisai can mean "Large Age"... so as long as all 3 Taisai reaches "Large Age" and noone kills it, it can spawn as Taisaijin once every 24 hours. (but the total time for "Large Age" status seems to be 72 hrs per mob as mentioned above)

5.) Good luck on any interested campers... you shouldnt have very much Camping Competition but watch out for the ppl that know nothing about this mob and might kill the PH's out of boredom and the ones that will kill them to be a jerk XD...

So that's the spawn information on this mob and now start thinking to yourself about how i have waaay to much time on my hands LOL XP

I'll confirm this with a bit of clarification. I managed to be at the screen the exact moment that Taisaijin popped, and pinned things down; a day later I confirmed it. Taisaijin will appear at midnight (Vana'diel Time) on the 25th day (Vana'diel days) that none of the Taisai are killed. Yes, it is roughly 24 hours, but it's a bit longer than 24 hours since it spawns at midnight Vana'diel time.

For some reason, Taisaijin will spawn able to aggro anyone nearby, but after being thoroughly pwnd by Sleep + Flare, I did not get aggro when I returned and positioned for Sneak Attack (70 THF), downed a perkisos au lait, and utsu'd for the fight

And for the record, he drops a Scroll of Refresh also.

39 exp pts @ lvl 70 solo, indicates Taisaijin is level 60.

(Edited for winur grammer skillz, and again b/c I found a screenshot with exp info)

I was on my way to Fei'Yin to go level my npc, when I saw this NM (took the long way around, wasn't paying attention and took different tunnel) and saw this NM. Not thinking much about it I decided to engage. He's freaking hard.

I called my npc to help fight, and used Hundred Fists (I'm a taru 75mnk/war). About halfway through the monsters HP I get a /tell asking if I want help, I do. I swear I got this thing down to 1% HP by the time I died, got hit with a big ol' flare. Of course it was then that I got the help, and one of the people came up and did about 100dmg before it died. I was so close! If it wasn't for his strong paralyze I wouldn't have died, I musta missed about 20 combat rounds.

He dropped refresh, mercury and the hat. I lost the lot on it, it would be a nifty hat to have. I think I should have gotten it though, I did most of the work and died lol.

Heh. I did feel kinda bad about lotting on it, but Mooch said that you already have a lot of neat stuff, so I forgot about it. Also, I had spotted it before you even got there, and had called on Mooch for assistance... It is awfully sporty... though, I found a hume female the other day in Besieged with one on. So now I don't feel as special. Thanks for the drop though; going to camp Toby for the sandals so I can level my guard up soon.

Multiple threads at killing ifrit point to not killing any of the place holders for **72** Hours earth time, after that it will despawn one of the PHs and replace it.

So basicly have to keep people from killing it.

Imagine if one person wants to keep it all to himself. All he has to do is run in and kill it every day :/ I personally kinda like this idea, and hate it at the same time.

Killed it at lv 65 with some linkshell members at higher levels. Dropped a refresh scroll and a vial of mercury... disappointing. There were only 2 people in the pass when I saw it, and I waited about 30 mins after it spawned for ls members to arrive and everyone else left. Cast higher level magic, tried to use Burst on me. even with a 75 in my pt i got 11 exp from it, so its somewhere in the higher 60s I think.

Apparently, to make Taisaijin pop, all you need to do (or not do, in this situation) is to avoid from killing any Taisai for 72 hours. After these 72 hours are up, one of the Taisai will temporarily despawn and then respawn as Taisaijin. If you or anyone else kills Taisai before the 72 hour marker, the timer resets. Hope this helps! ^^
