Diabolos in Darkness Named

Diabolos in Waking Dreams

Common Traits

  • When initially aggroed, Diabolos will draw in everyone in the party of the player that aggroed him.

  • At random intervals during the course of the fight, certain tiles on the battlefield floor will drop down and disappear. Any player on one of those tiles at the time it falls will drop down and be attacked by the Diremite type mobs beneath the floor.

Diabolos Special Attacks

  • Drain - Single target HP absorption effect.

  • Aspir - Single target MP absorption effect.

  • Sleep II - Single target Sleep effect.

  • Sleepga - AoE Sleep effect (Circle of effect originates from spell target).

  • Bio II - Single target Darkness based DoT with additional Attack down effect.

  • Blind - Single target Accuracy down effect.

  • Camisado - Single target physical attack with an additional Knockback effect.

  • Somnolence - Single target Darkness based magic damage with an additional Weight effect.

  • Ultimate Terror - AoE Attribute Down effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

    • The weakness to the target individuals will slowly decrease over time.

  • Noctoshield - Self target Phalanx effect (Effect can be dispelled).

  • Nightmare - AoE Sleep and Bio effects (Circle of effect originates from mob).

    • The DoT damage from the Bio effect will not wake you up from the Sleep effect.

  • Dream Shroud - Self target Magic Attack Boost and Magic Defense Boost (Effects can be dispelled).

    • The Diabolos from Darkness Named is incapable of performing Dream Shroud.

  • Nether Blast - Single target Darkness based magic attack.

    • The Diabolos from Darkness Named is incapable of performing Nether Blast.

  • Ruinous Omen - AoE Darkness based magic damage. Damage is equal to a random percentage of the HP of the targets. Denoted by the characteristic mob two-hour animation.

    • Diabolos will perform this once his HP drops to roughly 50%.

    • The Diabolos from Darkness Named is incapable of performing Ruinous Omen.

very easy fight
# Nov 16 2008 at 6:51 PM Rating: Decent
ok, this was the 2nd time i beat him and god was it ever easy

party setup
75 blm/rdm
75 blm/rdm
74 blm/rdm
75 whm/sch
75 blu/nin
75 rdm/drk

strat-
3 blm timenuked blizzga 3
that took about 30% of his hp away right off the bat. actual damage was as follows
1391, 867, 432
after draw in rdm chainspell stunned. while blu was spamming headbutt and whm was using banish/holy/whatever dd they had

we won in just over 3 minutes. however, diabolos was dead before chainspell wore off. all 3 blm manafonted and just nukes as fast and as hard as possible

i tried all them strategies out there and none of em worked for me. i tried the manaburn i tried the blue stunning strategy i think i even tried conventional exp/merit parties...

nothing worked i was cursing up a storm each time i went down to the shrouded maw and never came out victorious.

so i decided to do my own plans my own strategy based on my own experience (the way it should be done eh?) so.. i thought Diabolos is dark based... fights are deadly if you let him live long... loves to spam dispelga nightmare.. you know usual stuff to spank you faster than a red headed stepchild...

2 sams 2 mnks 1 brd 1 rdm/drk
the sams alternate 2hrs self light skillchain the mnks hundredfist him the brd soul voice minuet and march and the rdm just does chainspell and stun.

i dont know if i finally got lucky or it was because it was firesday or the people who were in my party actually knew how to play their jobs very well... diabolos was done and dead before i even finished singing my second song.. 3 of the melee complained they didnt even get to wail on him at all. the rdm lold throughout the whole chat saying that he stilll had plenty of chainspell time. we all laughed at how tense we were and all the meds we bought and and how i was fretting about like an idiot because i had failed diabolos 20+ times. and how long it took us to buff... for him to die basically in the blink of an eye.

so really guys try what you feel comfortable with. in the end my ideal 2sam 2mnk 1 brd 1 rdm wasnt fulfilled i had to settle ( and i much appreciate it too) 2 sams 1 mnk 1 drk 1 brd and 1 rdm so please... dont disregard what others have to say but dont think its impossible because you dont have "party set up" up to par with whatever so and so said. diabolos is by far the most challenging avatar out of all the prime battles. i know that for sure someone can kill him like any other normal mob but that wasnt working for me. i mean i tried but getting him down to 10% over 5 times with no success? yea... kinda gets to you.

so please ^^ i hope this helped out anybody who is frustrated with him. just see what your strong points are and what your weak ones are and start off from there.

good luck d(^.^)

just fought diabolos set was
RDM/DRK
SMN/WHM
BLM/RDM
SAM/WAR
MNK/NIN
WAR/SAM

we buffed up outside SAM shared TP entered titan buff then used poision pots while smn engaged diabolos. fight was over in 30 seconds by the time rdm started to CS stun he was down to 50% never got a chance to even use nightmare only really got his 2hr off by then way too late. Right set up with good players this fight is cake. new record yay!
Easy prey

This fight was WAY easier than I anticipated. Our pt setup was:

WAR/NIN (me)
DRK/THF
RDM/DRK
BLM/WHMx3

Myself and DRK pop Iccy wings, pop poison pots, BLM's time thundaga III, Diabolos does Draw-In, BLM's have hate. RDM CS + Stun, DRK and myself unload our TP. BLM's continue to nuke and he goes down really easily. Maybe a min worth of fighting if that.

Get this done with my ls members. I am glad that we got Diabolo Prime on 2nd run and 1st was only a dry run.

1st try: Blm and I stunned the 1st and 2nd nightmare but not the 3rd. The 3rd came almost right after the 2nd run. so, there's no way we can stun it during recasting.

2nd try: We beat Diabolos on DARK DAY! Woot! At first, we tried to wait after the dark day. But we figured we probably would need to wait for another 30 to 40 mins. And some of us will have work the next day. So, we just tried w/o expecting anything since it was a dark day. Yeah! We got lucky as Diabolos used only 2 nightmares and we stunned it both. Mabye we were lucky but it seems Diabolos Prime was not that hard.

Gamij (Whm/blm)
Jamig (Pld/war)
Clarenze (Blu/Nin) <--me!
TKClement (Brd/whm)
Cucopper (Sam/Nin)
??? (Blm/Whm) <--forgot his name, a random player we got from /shout

Thank you it was fun!! /salute to my LS members! GL <everyone>!

Party Setup:

Whm/Smn
Rdm/Drk
Sam/War
Sam/War
Mnk/Nin
Thf/Nin

We took more time buffing for this fight then the fight actually took. Before we dropped down all the melees either used opopo necklaces to sleep to 300% tp and the Sams meditated to 300. We all popped a poison potion in case of sleepga.

Dropped down, ran to the 2 squares second row right side and engaged him. All Melee weapon skilled right away then 2 hred. He lasted less than 30 seconds. he didnt even attempt a tp move or astral flow, the rdm drk who was there for chain stun couldnt even get a stun off he went so fast by the time she popped chainspell at about 50% he was dead before she could cast the first stun

I dont think the whm casted anything. I was the Thief and I was really just extra baggage. I got off one Dancing edge for 700 and a couple melee shots.

We brought icarus wings just in case but noone used one

Tried at this **** last night with the following setup:

BLM/WHM
BLM/WHM
BLM/RDM
RDM/DRK (me)
SMN/WHM
SMN/WHM

Needless to say, we were pumping out some mad numbers with AM II along with Titans using mountain buster.

I'd have to say the reason for fail was my fault for not confirming which tiles to stay on when they drop. When we were drawn in, I followed one of the BLM to a tile and pop CS+Stun when needed. At about 33%, I fall with the tiles and the BLM, assuring defeat. We all wiped at 10% and I keep smacking myself for it.

After RR, we decide to give it another go (actually 2). And might I say, CS+Stun seems almost necessary (until the point when he starts resisting it). Diabolos readied Nightmare 3 times back to back after a perfect stun cycle with myself and the other blms. Still we wipe...

Oh well, at least next time I'll know what's coming (and actually grab my Thunder Staff...when do you actually use it other than nuking in meripo?).

Just pulled this off with a unique set up. We go with 2x sam, drk (me), mnk, rdm/drk, and whm. 1st run one of the sams d/c and we wipe. Got him down to about 15-20%, we go again without 2hrs and get him down to about the same amount. Now we decide to wait for our 2hrs recast.

So after about 3 hours everyone is back from being afk and what not and we are getting ready to go and our rdm d/c and doesn't come back. We have waited this long and eveyone is ready to sign off anyway so we decide to run through it with just the 5 of us.

This was by far the best run I have ever been on. Diabolos was dead easily under 30 seconds. He only tried to get one nightmare off and that wasn't even needed to be stunned because he died almost right after he readied it. Now I have a nice new Diabolos summons to show off now. Thanks to all that were in my pt, forgot some of the names but you should know who you are. ^^

I was SOOO pissed last night. I tried this guy 3 times yesterday once before work and twice after.

1st run. I see a shout in WG {Diabolos} {Do you need it?} {/tell} {White mage} {Can i have it} Me being a whm/smn said HELL YES. I join and couldnt be happier. I am bascialy looking at (what I thought) was a perfect manaburn pt. 4x blm/rdm Rdm/drk, amd me whm/smn. So we decide to do the Pick a time nuke strat. It went perfectly. Rdm said Freeze 2 @ 15:44 and at 15:44 all 4 blms used freeze 2. It brought him to a little under 45 percent. rdm/drk already on the chainspell stun move, IM just waiting to erase the 2 hour with benediction. Problem, all 4 blms start to use bizzaga 3, when they go off diabolos is around 2-5 percent... he falls through the floor, but not just under the floor like some people complain about, he fell all the way to the mites. Diabolos uses draw in.

2nd run. I see another shout, I join I figure Im just home from work a fresh start, why the hell not. Pt setup is VERY strange, 3x Drk/sam, 2x brd, and me. Im like why not it may work. One of the drk was a KC drk so it Cant fail right? At the start both brds use soul voice and double march and double att + well Im like hell we won already Im just here for the 2 hour counteract with bene. The drks do what you would expect, get 100 tp use soul eater the KC drk switch to his KC and all drks Blood weapon souleater last resort. Take him to ten percent in about 5 seconds only to fall down the hole...all three of them. Pissed I walked away. I come back 2 minutes later with of course everyone sayin gsorry stood on the wrong tile LMFAO... I leave

3rd run. I put the pt together this time. I figure we are going ot do manaburn since its the easiest for me to set up. I easily get 3x blm/rdm from my ls, get a rdm/drk form my ls and get a smn/whm from my friends list. I get them ALL in teamspeak. I figure no @#%^ ups today. So we go in and i get all 3 blms to am2 at the same time...It was a beautiful thing. Rdm immediatly used chainspell and smn immediatly used astral flow judgement bold since it was lightnings day. Even though we have chainspell stun going off nightmare hits. Diabolos thankfully targets ramuh. Ramuh goes down and i wake up Curaga everyone away rdm hs about ten seconds left on chainspell. I figure we got this, he used his two hour, then i used mine. Now everyone is at full health with chainspell stun about to start again. Rdm starts casting drain on diabolos, rdm starts casting drain on diabolos, rdm starts casting drain on diabolos. Blms are LIke WHAT ARE YOU DOING rdm oops. Nightmare goes off and we die...slowly. At that moment I walk to my garage and take my baseball bat to my punching bag.

Pretty much exactly what Aelfwise said.
RDM/DRK did about 8 chainstuns, then the 9th and 10th resisted, got nightmared with about ~10% left.

Still came out victorious by a stroke of luck.

Just beat this a few nights ago with a regular party setup:
WAR/NIN (me)
NIN/WAR
RDM/BLM
WHM/BLM
COR/NIN
BLM/WHM

First fight we tried having the NIN drop from party, fall down, then invite so the mages wouldn't get drawn in. Apparently SE fixed that... The mages kinda panicked when that happened, he Nightmared 2 times and we all kinda got slaughtered

Second time we were doing alright. We got him to about 50% before he took the NIN down. I popped Mighty Misses and kinda semi-tanked him as he was running around hitting various party members and I was voking when possible. I was so focused on trying to get hate that I didn't realize when my roommate told me I had 100TP so I killed him with a 49 rampage lol.

Really fun fight. Didn't see a single tile fall down, though, even though he did use the corresponding move, whose name eludes me atm.

Well, I've tried to fight this many different ways, including a previous MNK/SAM burn...which failed (not sure how Diabolos can fall THROUGH the floor so that we can't target him...yet he can target us but oh well). After much frustration we got a group together of:

MNK/WAR
MNK/WAR
MNK/WAR
DRK/THF
RDM/DRK
WHM/SMN (me)

As with all other burn methods the idea was to knock him out in 30 seconds while the RDM/DRK just stunned the crap out of him. The DRK maxed out his tp with an Opo-Necklace while the MNKs boosted for Chi Blast at the beginning. Once the Chi Blasts were off the MNKs just Hundred Fisted and the DRK did his WS. Was over in a matter of seconds and I just stood there feeling rather useless (really did nothing but buff at the beginning and use Aerial Armor on everyone, didn't have to use one heal during the span of the fight).

In any case I finally got this sucker and the others got some of the other loot they'd wanted too. Monk Burn definitely is a great way to go if you're looking for a virtually flawless method. Thanks alot to those who helped, you know who you are ^^
An intersting turn of events.

I did this fight last night with a party setup of

75 BLM/RDM x4 (one was me)
75 PLD/WAR
70 SMN/WHM

After setting up a stun order we charged. The stun order was holding pretty well, but after Diabolos got to about 50% hp the first set of tiles fell.... and 3 of our party members with them. Me, another BLM, and the PLD were still up top. The PLD was dropped by Diabolos almost instantly. The other BLM and I immediately started dual BLM kite/nuke strategy. While i was kiting, however, he slammed me with his knockback move and right to the bottom with the diremites. Expecting certain failure now, I was pleasantly suprised when Diabolos used his draw in move to suck me back up to the top right as the diremites were about to pounce on me. The other BLM hit him with a Burst II to pull hate and I finished him with a Freeze II. I'd say we got pretty lucky.
Congratulations on Diabolos Yasuhiro.

Party atm:
BLM/RDM <-me
BLU/DRK
WAR/NIN
PLD/WAR
SMN/WHM
WHM/whatever

Attempt 1:
Tried to do the ledge trick. First off, WHM starts screaming he cant target PLD. Well that sucks, I hop on down there and try to cure PLD. We all get drawn in (very confusing at this point as im jumping around the screen). Nightmare goes off due to the drawning in, and Diabolos does what he does best, and rails us 6 ways from Sunday.

Attempt 2:
Whoops, its now Darksday. Its also 1:30am, we will try anyways. Well we threw the ledge trick out the window and are just going to try to take this as a normal fight. Went something like this. Sleepga2 -> Drain -> Sleepga2 -> Dispelga -> Drain -> Sleepga2 -> Drain...ect till the end of ******* forever. This goes on for about 4 minutes. NO NIGHTMAREs yet, so im standing around with my hands in my pockets waiting. Pld goes 'wtf, its at full health.' So I read, "blm! silence!"......
Yanktastic starts casting Silence.
Diabolos readies Nightmare.
Diabolos uses Nightmare.

********* believable.

i got diabolos last night.

party set up was
blm/rdm 73
blm/rdm 75
nin/war 75
blu/nin 75
smn/whm 74
smn/whm 75

we buffed up completely everytime including earthen ward, aerial armor, diabolos buffs (MAB and MDB up) and fenrir.

first fight we wiped.
but went pretty well, tank kept hate, diabolos was at 10%.
but he resisted a stun from the blu... :-(

second fight he opened with the aoe hp-mp down move.
when you start with 400mp, you don't do much....
wipe again

third fight, he was able to nightmare at 50% we survived, but all in red hp.
smn and nin went down, so luckely the stunning blu kept hate.
at 20% we blms went down and the smn used RR.
the blu (<3 blu) tanked while fenrir and ramuh helped out.
he was able to take him down.
the blu had 3 stuns equiped. those helped out A LOT.

so for those of you who tink smn is useless in this bc, i am still glad i went with this pty :-)

so i got diabolos as a blm and not the manaburn style. :-)

Just went 1/1 on this with a pick-up party of the following:

75 WAR/NIN
75 SAM/WAR
75 RNG/NIN
75 BLM/WHM
75 SMN/WHM
70 WHM/SMN

Basically, it was a kill-or-be-killed fight. Samurai stored up 300% TP, Warrior provoked and we got drawn in. Warrior uses Mighty Strikes and starts off first Skillchain, I blink and Diabolos is at 30% HP. Immediately Nightmare + 2hr combo brings everyone to deep red (except tank, who dies right before everyone else wakes up). I dash over to rest of party and Benediction mid-stride, blink again and Diabolos is dead. I know the Warrior and Ranger both used their 2hr, and I'm fairly certain the SAM did as well.

Just an idea for anyone who's failed before and is tired of waiting for the magical rdm/drk to join a party.

Just to everyone saying you need a manaburn, X jobs, etc to beat this: we just did it with this setup:

War/nin
Blm/whm
Rdm/Blm
Whm/Blm
Drk/Nin
Brd/Whm

We had 2 stunners, no one with chainspell stun. I served as a backup stunner on war, blink tanked it relatively easy with the help of the whm and brd. It's like every other mob in the game that's hard or requires a strategy- no one thing will work to win this, we were 1/5 (the second time there was a glitch and we got drawn in ELEVEN times during the fight, ruining all of our casting, etc). Just take it easy, use poison pots to resist sleep, and ONLY stun nightmare. Took us a few times to figure it out since we went in without any real plan (since there didn't seem to be anywhere that listed which tiles fell... we stayed top right for melees and bottom left for mages, as an above post mentioned). Anyhow, really fun and rewarding battle, and I imagine doable by ANY party that could exp at 75. Save TP for stun, you can kill it with normal hits. Once it gets really low on HP, cut loose.

On a side note, we had 2 people leave our party before we left to do this because "they didn't like what they were seeing" with our job choices and strategy. Not even a compromise, just disbanded and left. Well, now we have Diabolos and his pretty items :P. Be open minded, there's a lot of ways to do things.

71 smn here, fought diabolos a total of 8 times now. And im 0/8 on wins -_- This guy is TOUGH.... My pt beat him on the first try for the CoP mission. But the uncapped fight is just brutal. Im leaning to think that luck plays a huge role in fighting diabolos. Some fights he'll randomly spam nightmare like theres no tomorrow. While ive heard stories of him not using nightmare ONCE through out the entire fight. On my last run we had 2 75 blms and a 75 rdm/drk as stunners. With a sam to backup stun with his ws. And he still raped us. One fight we got him down to 1/3 HP but then Diabolos 2 houred, did his AoE Curse attack (forgot what its called) and capped it with a nightmare in the duration of about 25 seconds. What ive gathered so far about this fight is that you pretty much have to go all out to win this one. Be prepared to bring Sleep pots and Opo necklaces for TP for the melee. Poison pots to prevent Sleepga 2 (They wont help against Nightmare, but its still one less attack to have to worry about) Im thinking even au laits might be nice for hp regen. Dont count on the whm to save you from Bio death! The recast on erase is far too long, and the whm will be spamming cures to try and keep everyone alive if a nightmare goes off. These are just my 2 cents. Im sure that there are plenty of parties that have done this fight like it was nothing, without using any meds or items. But its better to be prepared than to wind up eating dirt on the floor of The Shrouded Maw

Good luck to anyone that tries this fight ^^

Stun resisted?
# Apr 12 2006 at 2:49 PM Rating: Decent
I'd never seen anything outright resist a Stun before this fight, except for Dynamis Lord and the Elemental Avatars, but it happened to me this weekend when I did a few runs as RDM/DRK.

We gave Diabolos four tries. Two of those tries Diabolos slipped in a Nightmare before Chainspell Stun started and we wiped.

On one of the occasions where Chainspell Stun worked, he was hit by every Stun - except for the Stun just as he used Nightmare. He resisted Stun, cast Nightmare unimpeded, and killed half of us off before we woke up.

On the other occasion when Chainspell Stun worked, he resisted MANY, possibly even MOST of the Stuns, including the one that would have interrupted Nightmare. And it was Lightningsday, besides, when Stun should have been at its strongest!

My Dark skill was capped (198 at level 74), but I didn't have any +Dark Magic Skill items. I may consider picking up a Dark Torque before trying this again. We had plenty of firepower - if it hadn't been for the resisted Stuns we would have beaten the ******* down.

That's unfortunate about your stun luck.

I am also lvl 74, with capped dark skill (no dark torque, etc), AND it was lightningday too! I did have thunder staff equipped to help my odds.

One attempt where I just helped cure & stun (2hr was gone), one of my stuns was resisted that resulted in a nightmare going off.

It could be as simple (and stupid) as luck, similar to maat fights.

In response to ledge strategy, I've learned that basically anyone on the ledge will get drawn in if they pull hate. It's also just messy to try to target ppl (or diabolos) if they stand below you. Otherwise, we didn't know another safe square melee could stand on that would be within casting range.

Thought I'd share what worked/didn't work during Diabolos prime fight.

My pty setup was:

Me - 74 RDM/DRK (for chainspell stun)
Shapelesschasm - 73 PLD
Firesoul - 75 WAR
Davess - 73 DRK
Jezter - 75 BLM
Pyke - 75 BLM

We read about the "ledge" rumor - where you can have tank disband before dropping to arena, then reinvite so mages aren't drawn in. We did that w/ all 3 melee, but it opened up a whole mess of problems.

First of all, the melee positioned themselves on 4th square from left on bottom row, which was almost directly below the ledge. So we were having that stupid "cannot see <t>." So PLD died before we could even target him to cure. I couldn't target Diabolos to stun him either. One by one the BLMs & myself were drawn in eventually.

You CAN buff up, etc outside before entering battle arena. You can also use opo opo necklace & sleep tp beforehand as well. This is great so you don't have to waste time inside. WAR & DRK did a light SC, with the BLMs MBing w/ Thundaga III. When I saw the melee readying WS, I started my chainspell & began nuking when I saw SC animation.

Diabolos tried to ready nightmare a few times, but he never got anything off, didn't even try to 2hr either. ^^ We whittled him down fast, and BLMs didn't even 2hr. Only ppl who 2hrd were me (for stun) and PLD (to make sure hate was solid).

As far as positions go, we had mages at Diabolos' initial position (1st row, center), melee 4th square on 5th row.

So keep in mind:
* Buff & sleep TP outside
* Use poison pots to evade sleepga
* Light SC followed by BLM MB
* RDM/DRK chainspell stun when SC kicks off

Then answer, of course, is the same as the Fenrir fight. Yes, you can do it at 20 - if you have five friends who are able to defeat Diabolos without a sixth person to help. In this case, the five friends also have to be able to carry you through all the Chains of Promethia missions up to 4-1.

If you have friends like these, definitely keep them, 'cause you'll never find any better. XD

Both Fenrir and Diabolos are VERY difficult opponents, even for level 75 characters. A level 20 SMN will be of no use during the fights - even your 2-hour won't even scratch these guys. With that said, there ARE parties capable of taking down both with only five members, and if they allow you to come along as a sixth member you'll get the Avatar, whether you were helpful or not.

No it's not possible, it really would have been nice, but you have to go through some of the CoP missions before getting Diabolos anyway, so you'll be at least Lv40+ anyway. Only Elemental Avatars can be done with the Lv20 solo battles.
(Diabolos is not Elemental, he's Celestial)
You sure?

Are you sure if the WHM disbands from the pt and then reinvited after entering that you won't get pulled in? I haven't tested it but if more then one person can verify that your remark is true it would help greatly with the fight.
about magic damage

In response to what he is and isn't 'weak' too... it is complete chance whether or not your nukes get resisted. When I did it both my Thundaga's hit for 1200+ and my Blizzaga III did 260 dmg...

Just some food for thought.

actually thats not true, thunder, fire, wind, are more light based therefore will get rsisted less and ice, water, stone is more dark based therefore will get resisted. dont believe me? then youve never bursted in a light/dark skillchain
easy way

We did this 5 times, each time changing small thing.
Totally unneeded, just try this:

a pt go in (make sure you have atleast 3 blms and a whm) the whm once inside disbands, pt goes to the ledge and nukes away and gets drawn in,
pt leader re-invites the whm, who wll remain at the ledge.
Whm casts curaga on pt when needed and keeps the pt awake, keep it up untill win!

easy and almost a garantied win.

Good luck on your runs
