I just helped my girlfriend and a friend on the Shiva server do this mission. We set the record (2 minutes, 50 seconds.) We came with a naked elvaan BLM. (I hear the screams already..) An eva build MNK, Great Sword sporting WAR and a NIN with no DD gear. We buffed in the field. The BLM landed sleep and then started healing. I (The ninja) tanked to start. The Monk used Hundred Fists and nearly soloed the eye. The warrior's mighty strikes hit the dragon until it was about 40% health.

The BLM healed me, (The Ninja) to full health and I popped Mijin Gakure. 350+ damage and killed.

For all new rank up-ers. Don't worry about getting a healer or Paladin. I would say sleep is unecessary, due to how quickly the eye fell. Grab 3 good DDs with standard exp gear. Have them two hour and the rest is cake.

This was an awesome fight! Whooped him with only two of us so apparently larger parties aren't neccessary. (I was assured that it couldn't be done with fewer than 3 or 4 people) We are WHM/BLM and MNK/WAR. I stood back and silence the seeker and distracted the dragon while my partner tanked the seeker. It died quickly without magic. Then I blinded the dragon and joined the fighting only stopping to cast cure if needed. We didn't set any records but if you're short on people willing to help at least I can assure you that it can be done. I'd love to do that fight again!
helped trio this, no mage
# Feb 18 2007 at 8:25 PM Rating: Decent
I was in Bastok Mines getting my 25 NIN/WAR ready for Khazam and decided to help
out on a shout for this mission. We went with 4 people, but it turned out the
mage couldn't get into the BC. Prepared for death, we decided to do it anyway.
WAR, MNK, and NIN. We started off on the Dragon. WAR used 2hour, and MNK soon
followed. MNK and I both tried to voke it off the WAR, but the crits of the GA
were doing way too much damage to keep hate long. Dragon went down, then we
unleashed One Inch Punch and Sturmwind on the eye and quickly put it down.

At the end of the mission, WAR had something like 80HP, I had taken no damage,
and only recast utsusemi once. MNK may have taken a couple of hits, but not
much. It took us something like five minutes, but most of that was spent
deciding we were really going to do it.

All in all, it's pretty easy to trio with DD if you have good equipment, good
food, and are willing to 2hour on it. If I'd gone as PLD instead of NIN and
2hour'd it would have been perfect overkill.
Finally =D

Elvaan Monk25/War12, managed to completely solo the end fight, much to my surprise. I knew it could be done but I didn't expect I would.

I took 4 or 5 Hi potions and some meat mithkabobs, and that's it. The dragon went down with a quick Focus+Hundred Fists+Combo to finish him. Used a couple of my potions during him. The seeker had bound me so I had to wait to engage him XD Was worried he would nuke me from afar and die, which would've sucked after seeing the dragon fall. Buuuuut yeah he was easier than the dragon, got a little nervous when he hit a few times and got a critical once but eh he eventually died. It was a fun fight all in all. =D On that note if anyone is needing an extra member for it I'd be more than happy, Lavitz on Kujata.

=)

soloed as thf

Soloed this guy with thf/nin sleep bolt the key to this. Sleep SA WS repeat. long fight took 11min to beat but can be done I recomend using Perfect Dodge while your killing they eye so you dont have to wory about shadow eating regular attacks. You will need them for his spells. Bring a hand full of hi pots for you as you will take some dmg from spikes.
thanks

was doin all 3 dragons one day cos 3 of my friends needed one or the other (yea i hav friends :P) so, doin this 1 first, we got tank, so its me DD:DRK RDM PLD, we needed a WHM so the PLD's GF tags along...looks like we'd hav to do it as a 4..we go in, do wat is normally done. slept the Eye and killed it np, it woke up just as the Eye died...at 40% it Petrified tank, i (DRK) had to tank it..only to fall victim to petrification..at 40%, both Mages were out of MP but after watchin them 2 run around (funny XD) PLD becomes unpetrified savin the RDM ***...i bcome unpetrified and the last 30% seemd to go quick...although we were out of MP near the last 40-50% we didnt need much cures and we didnt need any at all at the end..we win, get CS onto the next dragon...
PS. Hardest dragon my ***...was too weak for a 4 and we had all the bad luck we cud hav! XD

Best to sleep the dragon first then go after the eye. When the eyes dead, go after dragon.

This battle is easy. I done it with 2 whm/1 drg and a rdm(me)and took about 2 mins.

Ok, if you are worried about this fight, and buying items to help you...don't. This was disappointingly easy. I was very disappointed when we beat it in 2 minutes 46 seconds, and I didn't even have to cure ONCE. ; ;

Here is my own experience with this boss monster.

Last night my THF25 Linkshell friend and I were doing the last of the Kazham Keys missions. We'd already done the other two, doing the relevant parts of San D'Oria Mission 2-3 on the way. Its quite a good idea to combine the two, as it saves a lot of time. So, we are trying to get the drop on the keys, and its taking a while. We're /shouting Come and kill the Dragon, come now, etc. Nothing. So we get one drop for the Keys, after about 20 minutes. Still /shouting, no help. So we carry on trying for the key drop. Now, the second key took quite a while to come... I would say 45 minutes - 1 hour. Still no help for the Dragon, though.

Then... along comes some level 70+ PLD and WAR, doing the AF2 Warrior quest. One of them politely tells us that they are going to spawn an NM soon, and at level 25 we head out. Backtracking, we took some aggression and killed 5 Quadavs in a row, one of them dropping the last key we needed. So we head to the Waughroom Shrine just for a look. Then the AF guys and girls come in, looking a little worse for wear... Level 71 PLD down to <50% HP. I gave him some curing help, we thought maybe they might help us in return... sadly not, but I guess that is fair enough. We were sick of waiting by this point, after about two hours in the Palbrough Mines, so we decided to take on the Dark Dragon with just two of us; THF25 and WHM26/BLM13. Luckily, a Linkshell member came online who very kindly offered to help. So now we had a party of:

WHM26/BLM13 <me>
THF25
SAM26/PLD13

Well, we were supposed to have a SMN helping from the AF quest but they never came back, so we decided to go it alone. As this was my first time, I worried a bit when it said 'You have clearance for 6 (!!!) party members'. Duly, the three of us decided what the ****, we were there, we could try it. I'd already read this page and seen a very good tactic (thankyou to anaka ^^) so I decided to do that... although we didn't have a Black Mage. So I silenced the eye, Thief Sneak-Attack and Samurai damage and it was down in about 15 seconds. Absolutely nothing to worry about there. So we turned our attention to the Dark Dragon, who promptly did his 'Foot Stomp' (something like that) move... so now we are all in the 250 - 280 HP zone, which is okay at level 25 cap. Now, the Dragon casted its Paralyze move... and really really stupidly, I completely forgot I had Paralyna and didn't use it. So the Samurai's health has dropped to around 150, and I'm trying to Cure -> Paralyze. So I Cure II (successfully), only the Dragon hits him for 100+ damage... so I cast Divine Seal, Cure III... paralysis. Another Foot Stomp, and the Samurai is down to 43 HP, myself and the Thief okay on about 150... so I hammered the Curaga Macro, (Divine Seal already wasted) and it lags briefly... WHM healed 90 HP... Thief healed 90 HP... SAM died >.< (By the way, I'm really sorry to the person who died... you know who you are ^^). Luckily, we'd already given the Dragon quite a beating, he was down to under 1/3rd health. I waited a couple more hits, used Benediction (which I also should have used earlier) but we weren't hitting the Dragon for much damage. My staff (skill 56) was hitting for about 5... The Thief was struggling to land a decent blow too, so I hit the Dragon with Banish, Dia, took the hate from the Thief (intentionally) and we finally managed to finish him with a Sneak Attack whilst the Dragon was hitting me. All told, it was fairly easy, and we only had one death (whom I raised, and so he only lost about 200 experience points) even with a party of only 3. The death was the fault of the Thief and myself for not provoking / casting paralyna / Benediction as well :( Still, we live and learn. It was really good fun, and now I am finally Rank 3! I am sorry this is so long, I am not very good at concise storytelling...

The hints to take from this are:
Make sure you have Paralyna
Don't be afraid to take the hate for a little while as a non-Taru White Mage, you'll be fine
Silence the Seeker first, then kill him quickly

And most of all, good luck, as this (like for me) is often the first serious NM people fight, and they definately are a learning experience. I'd never actually melee another one (like I did here, briefly) but I knew I had to so we could use Sneak Attack and my MP was gone.

There is apparently a rank cap going into this fight. I had a party of 5 and 2 were left behind. This was bad because my party was only me (red mage with proper level armor), a naked red mage who joined at the last minute, and a thief. We at least managed to kill the seeker, but not the dragon. So my question is what rank does someone have to be to get in, or maybe what reasons would someone be excluded?

i think a lot of you overate this dragon even when u say it's incredibaly easy ^^ sleep isn't necessary at all, i killed it w/ 25 pld, 20 nin, 25 mnk, 23 drk and 25 whm. no one tanked, no one used any abilities and whm never healed. Everyone just meleed. We owned it and no one had even full hp-50. (no juice either) so, for anyone scared or nervous about fighting this dragon, don't be ^^ easiest boss u will ever fight

I was really excited to fight this thing, since it was my first boss fight... my regular party was last weekend 25 BLM/WHM, 24 MNK/WAR and 22 RDM/BLM. Even if Dragon was 25, we decided to give it a shot, and hopefuly to find anyone to help.
Well.. don't count on that! It is hard to find someone to help to kill this thing... probably because it doesn't give you xp? The only guy who offered (after we offered some gil) to help was a ~42 BLM, and he had to fight naked and without weapon being leveled to 25. Anyway, if you are reading this and are as scared as I was before fighthing this thing.. DO NOT WORRY. IT IS VERY EASY. We didn't have a WHM nor a WAR, wasn't a 25 party and we made all mistakes that could be done. And we still won.

Tactics (as posted several other times):
1- SLEEP the dragon.
2- SILENCE the eye.
3- NUKE the eye.
4- HUNDRED FISTS (if you have a mnk) the dragon.
Done.

To give you a better idea, sleeping the dragon should stick as easy as a post-it. The same for silencing the other guy. Better yet, none of those spells will wear off: With 3 ppl nuking and 1 attacking the eye, you should kill the eye in about 20 secs... i was amazed to how fast the hp of this mob was going down. For dragon, I'm not sure if Petrify is a spell or a skill... silencing him won't hurt. With proper nuking / attacking, you'll be able to take him without depleting mps and withouth having hp below 50%. Of course, just in case, the healer should keep an eye.

Now... My experience:

The naked BLM setup his macros before the fight. Unfortunately he did it all wrong. He casted sleep on the eye! Our regular BLM casted sleep on the dragon, but the mnk got confused and actually provoked the dragon after that, and our RDM (me) casted silence on the eye, sticking to the original plan.
SO: We ended up with no sleeps remaining for a minute, 2 fully awake mobs, and fortunately a silenced eye. Still, we tried to stick to the plan and everybody concentrated on the eye. Gone in less than 20 secs. And no hp danger till now. The dragon still was focusing on the MNK. We then switched to the dragon, and the MNK used hundred fists. RDM casted dia, paralyze & slow, I would've casted silence or gravity if I had known what was going to happen next... at about 75% of the dragon's hp (around 5 secs after the mnk launched hundred fists) the dragon PETRIFIED the MNK. He didn't say anything (he thought he was getting d/c, since server dropped a couple of times that night), and we realized that after we saw the dragon moving towards the blm. Still, he moves real slow. Our BLM and the naked BLM just kept nuking, RDM attacking and the dragon didn't seem to decide which BLM to attack. We slowly damaged the dragon till around 25% of his hp till our mnk came back to life. 10 more seconds and the dragon was dead.

So, even with a 25 24 22 (+naked 25) party and a lot of mistakes, is an easy fight... kind of dissapointing, I really expected the dragon to be harder than this. Fortunately, it is not, and earning Rank 3 is still a bliss, considering all the trip and time involved. I'll make sure to make myself available for hire for this mission, for some gil, and a lot of fun. (If you need to hire someone for this, I'd suggest to offer 1k per person. You are getting 3k for the quest, anyway)

At 25mnk/12war and with a 24whm/12rdm, we were able to take out the dragon and seeker more easily than expected. The seeker was annoying and cast sleep on the mnk first and the dragon proceeded to bash the whm. But once sleep wore off, we used our two-hour abilities and killed them in a total time of 3:51. We had 200+HP and 100+HP/35+MP respectively at the end.

The dragon didn't petrify us (I was worried about that), but it did start off with a ranged wind attack doing 130 dmg to both and attacked pretty rapidly after that - I expected it to attack with around 400-500 delay. It seemed to be 200-300 delay and did ~35 dmg each hit to the mnk (121def).

A couple friends and I took both the seeker and the dragon in under 3 minutes with no deaths. It was a capped 25 whm, a capped 25 monk, and myself, a 23 monk at the time. Basically we ran in, igonored the dragon for a bit as he decided to run around after the whm who kept healing herself, we dropped the seeker and ran to the dragon. we both hit hundred fists and pounded the bejesus out of him. I was petrified when he was 2/3 down in HP and my friend finished him off. The dragon lasted literally 30 seconds because my two hour ability pretty much ended when he hit the floor. Whm just basically kept us alive, but if you had 3 monks, you wouldn't even need a healer, just pound the bejesus out of everything with hundred fists and boosted combo's.

How did you kill the dragon when you were level 30? Isn't there a level cap? Or can you come back and kill it later on by using Orbs and fight the dragon without a level cap? Took my LS group 3:23 mins to kill it and the record was 2:39 mins. How did you kill both Seeker and the Dark Dragon in under 40 seconds? Unless I'm missing something that's a lie. And silence the Seeker and kill the dragon, killing the eye is pointless with the dragon hitting for over 100+ at times.

Duo strategy
# Dec 29 2003 at 1:19 AM Rating: Good
Extra info...
The eye with the dragon is level 23.
You don't need Beastmen Seals, you go through some cutscenes then arrive in a new area and walk to the dragon and eye.

Killed them in a duo:
Mithra 25RDM/BLM and Tarutaru 25BLM/WHM, 4min 27sec. Best time on Ragnarok was 2 something minutes.

BLM used Mana Font at start of fight and chained Stonega, Aeroga, and Waterga until eye was dead - I kept him healed and debuffed the Dragon. BLM switched to single target DD when the eye was gone. BLM ended up having almost all the agro and kited the dragon around while casting Thunder/Blizzard DD and Draining his HP, I was out of mana by this point but gained agro now and again briefly with my melee attacks. The dragon is extremely slow moving(I didn't cast Gravity).

It was a fairly close fight...but the first few -ga spells missed the dragon and that might have made it easier. Other people report sleeping the dragon works rather well; However, we succeeded on our first attempt with the above strategy, so I can't comment on how that works.
