OK, Here goes. My first post. I just solo'd this thing (Easy Prey) as an Elvaan WHM32/RDM16 and survived, but with under 100 hp left and 21mp, and was aggro'd by a Too Weak Gob Digger when I tried to rest up after. YES, it can be done. The only problem I had was the speed of it's attacks, which I wasn't ready for. He did use Bad Breath, but I only got affected by Sleep, which he kindly removed when he struck me right afterwards.
Knowing the Malboro traits in previous versions of FF, I cast Barsilencera before the fight, but Stoneskin only lasted through 2 very quick hits. I tried to Slow and Paralyze him, but was constantly interrupted because of the speed of his attacks. My gear ranges from lv16 (scentless armbands) to lv31 (Maul), with Seer's Tunic for MP boost and Tiger Stole for Attack boost, and I cast Enthunder for additional damage on each hit. I am far from being fully armored and prepared for taking on this enemy, but with proper spell use, it can be solo'd, even by a whm. I only used one Cure III during the fight, and never used 2hr.
As for the people who can't understand why some people have problems and they don't, LOOK AT THE JOB. A Warrior or Paladin has a much higher attack and defense than a mage or a thief, although a thief SHOULD have high evasion. As such, WAR and PLD should have less problems than those with other jobs. My WHM has an attack of 113 and a def of 105.

30 War.. I had no trouble soloing a DC Malboro. I've only ever gro drops of vines though.

I went after this thing for the first time last night with my Galka WAR30/NIN15 in Pashhow, full hp and utsusemi. I almost beat it, then it let loose Bad Breath. I was paralyzed and dead in a matter of seconds.

Amen. The "con" system is based off level and not actual strength. They need to revamp it. I mean, all we get is Too Weak, Easy Prey, Decent Challenge, Even Match, Tough, Very Tough Incredibly Tough, and the Impossible to Guage. Then the low and high Evasion and Defense. You think that'd be enough. It isn't.
1) Those reading don't tell you much at all. I mean, we assume that Even Match means the mob and you are close to the same level, but who really knows. You could take on a Tough and its actual level may be closer to a Very Tough.
2) There is a gap between Even Match and Tough.
3) Impossible to Gauge is ridiculous. There are plenty of weak NMs that can be beaten easily by a higher level character.
4) How can you tell if something has high or low Defense and Evasion? By looking at it? Come on.
There needs to be a comparison between your and "its" ATK and DEF to achieve a more accurate reading.
Impossible to Guage should still be conned like normal enemies, but I think they need a different color name to distinguish them.
Or to fix it all, give a job "Scan" and have that person always check the mobs.

I killed this thing tonight for the very first time as RDM 34/BLM 17. I was told by my linkshell that he might kill me cuz he's tougher than the usual EP, but with Stoneskin and Enfire..not a prob. He just brought me down to yellow, then died for me. :) I had an emergency macro though..just in case.
But got the drop on my first kill. :D Cool. Darn shame it was one of about 25 headbands on the AH and going for 2k. >< Ah well.

Why is it that "Easy Prey" means it can kill you with very little effort?^^
I also wonder why Eps and Dcs can kill you solo with very little effort. Easy Prey shouldn't mean that it takes all you got to bring it down. The reason being it bases on level only. They fail to base the con of enemies on their abilities.

I had a similar experience. 1000 Needles sucks.

i am a lvl 32dm/15blm i have fought these yhings ad gotten the dodge headband 3 time. it is not a rare drop.
I've solo'd this guy for ahwile now and malboro vines drop like every third fight if you have THF sub with Treasure Hunter. I havent got the Dodge Headband yet though. At 40 or higher, he is easy to defeat.

Well, I have fought like 7 or 8 of these and i still am. To this time there has been only on drop of a malboro vine. Is there a way to increase chance of drop being a whm30/blm15????

maybe it was my level 20ish armor (i'm poor) but i fought one of these today doing the "Explorers Footsteps" quest...anywho i'm a 31blm/rdm and it was a pretty even fight...prolly could've done it with better equip but he was hitting 25-50ish on normal, skill attack hit for 75ish but he got me while casting his deathblow...i'm sure cure3 could've saved me but whatever, was kinda fun :)
on a side note, i went back on a choco and went behind the monument, he never even saw me :)

First i ever killed dropped a dodge haidband ^-^ if only i had that luck with NM's
Fought a couple of these on the way to the Stone monument in Pashhow. I was a 30 drg/war and i was with a 29 war/rng. The only thing that inpressed my about this mob is that damn these guys attack fast. Fights lasted about 30 seconds and they both took away more than 300 of my hp at 20 dmg a pop.

yea i just tried to fight one of these at 30drg/15war and it crit me 3 times in a row so i hauled ***
soloed an easy prey one as a level 30 mnk/15 war and tore it up, got 48 exp but no drops

I soloed one today as a lvl 37whm/smn with a hammer and slotered it. not too hard and I only lost half of my mp.
I am a 30war/10mnk and my friend who comes with me is 30mnk/15war we will either kill it with only takin about 150 health lost and some times we would end up droppin below 250, I soloed and killed 5 of them by my self with my 30war/10mnk.
36 NIN here, and I had no problem taking these things out
My 35 bard almost got splattered across the Marshlands. The great thing about the Bard is that with Mary's Horn sleep (Foe Lullaby) is almost 100%. I was getting destroyed by, and when it got to the point that I knew I wasnt going to win I slept him and ran off like a little girl. Bards are wimpy but I am Elvaan and have lvl 30 or above gear and still had lots of trouble. Be careful with these.

i don`t use ninjutsu too often since i don`t have utsusemi (unfortunatly) ..
it`s just that i think that soloing mobs for nice drops became more like a hobby to me ..

I've been playing for 3 or four years now. Haven't got any job over lvl 43 (THF being my highest lvl), and I will tell you these creatures are hit-and-miss. If it looks like you're winning or you have a better chance of surviving the battle than it does; that is when it decides to play nasty and Bad-Breath you. I had every ailment, debuff, and curse listed across the top of my screen & all I could do is stand there petrified, stunned, bound, and whatever else it threw at me for god knows how long...until it finally killed me. It took it 15 hits to kill me this way. It was slow, painful, and embarrassing. I'm just glad it killed my NPC first so she couldn't witness it.
i soloed these as a lv33drg before, so i think u can slaughter these as lv41 thf

Lol, yeah I remember the Malboros from the other Final Fantasys. This one hurt me just as bad. I killed it though, poison brought me down to 8 health before I could heal. I think it checked Descent to me.
WTF is wron with all of you? i'm a level 35pld/17war and i can kill these all day long, also, i lose like 1/4 to 1/3 of my health, and that's without using cures,

With phalanx+protect2 up these guys hit me for 10-25 per hit. As I am mithra, my evasion is way of the scale but they always hit me and they are almost the only mobs who hit me here, aside from elementals.
I usually enblizzard, protect2, phalanx before i fight these.
Afterwards Regen+refresh to keep going farming.
These guys make great farming mobs. Dodge headband goes for about 2-3k en vines for 700-1k gil on Bismarck. Just watch out for bad breath. They even affect me on level 42 with it. Silence is no joke as mage....

The correct name is Malboro.
These Marlboro are much stronger than they appear to be. I've found that an Easy can kill a group of 4 who are unprepared quite quickly. Soloing a "too weak" can be dangerous for the weaker classes like WHM.
