Historical Information

In Hindu mythology, Shiva was one of a triumvirate of gods representing the three aspects of the Hindu faith, alongside Brahma (which represented the creator), Vishnu (which represented the preserver). Shiva himself represented the destroyer, the end of all things.

In all representations of Shiva, he is shown as having a third eye, located in the center of his forehead, with which he is capable of releasing a beam of intense energy, with which he burned Desire to ashes, and blew off the head of his son Ganesha.

In specific instances, Shiva is represented with five faces, each representing one of the five mantras associated with him: Aghora, Isana, Sadyojata, Tatpurusa, and Vamadeva.
