Vana'diel Bestiary: Deadly Dodo  

Just killed this on first try, Luckily there was 2 Nins camping it for their trial weapons. We got it killed and dropped, so easy. On my way to Nue now wish me luck!

Over the weekend, I've been running through the Belt quests fluidly. Found boths rams one day and Morbolger the next day after just 45 minutes. Then I found Dodo for the first time, but no drop, so I just disregarded it and went out to camp Nue, who, after an hour and a half, I never found. Then a 7 hour ls party coaxed me into joining them, and directly after, I went back and got Nue's Fang 1/1. I was feeling optimistic and aimed to have done both Purple and Brown Belt quests in just two days. So I headed back to Dodo and found/killed him again. But again, no drop. Disappointing, but I would return the next morning to try again.

Next morning before school, 0/3.

The following evening, 0/4, 0/5.

Yesterday, 0/6, 0/7, 0/8.

...Why SE? Just why?

Lol, and of course I go to camp it and after 10 minutes it pops and I get the drop. XD

Just had an annoying fight with this giant chicken as a MNK53/RNG19. I had been farming the Tabar Beaks in the area and was curious about NMs in the area. So I look on here and find that he spawns right where I'm at. I farm the PH and a couple in the local vicinity (I know greedy) for about an hour and POP goes the chicken. I Hundred Fist him and he goes down pretty easily, no drop.

I continue farming the Tabar Beaks and get down to about 800 life when Dodo pops directly in front of me less than two hours after the previous fight. Not having expected him this early I was not rested and a couple of other farmers were in the area. So I finish off the Tabar Beak I am fighting and proceed to Dodo. I have no abilities left but counterstance and I am fairly poorly equipped at 53 (hence the farming). We take a few moments knocking each other around until we are both down to nill. He gets the final hit off first. I HP back to Port Jeuno.

I am now deleveled to 52 and pi$$ed. I grab a choco in Port and race out to where I was knocked down hoping to see if someone polished him off and got the drop. My luck he is back to full health and no one is near him. I hop off, still have 10 min to Hundred Fists, so I popped Focus and Dodge, used Chakra around 800 HP, and Raging Fists 3 times. Finally he drops and I am the proud owner of my first piece of the Brown Belt. Now that I have this its on to the other two.

*Moral of this story - Don't go out with Gimp Sub, rest periodically, be prepared, and never give up.*

I was out leveling my Fellow and just as my fellow leaves I start heading back to Jeuno and I see the Deadly Dodo. I checked it and when I saw it was an NM I attacked it. I soloed it as a 51 NIN/ 25 WAR using all Ninjutsus and it took about 10 min to take down beacuse it had about 4500-4700 hp. It never hit me once (Utsusemi: Ni FTW) and I got the Dodo skin on the kill and I was WTF was this for and I checked it out and lo and behold it was for the brown belt which sells for 450-500 k on Shiva. Now I am going to get the other two NM's and make me some gil! I'll update when I get them!

0/4 so far after camping him for 2 weeks.


Morlbolger i went 1/1 on, Nue i went 1/9. I hate you Square Enix, it's rediculous for this crap to take this damn long.

Took 5+ hours of camping for this NM to pop. So people are not lying when they say that it can take a long time. I killed the 2 ph's every 5 minutes without fail.

Had my brother head out during the last 30 minutes with his 51 thief for TH2 so I would have a better chance on the drop. 1/1 on this NM.

This guy is tougher then he seems with all the mobs in the area getting in my way. I was a lvl 50 Blm when I fought him. I would try to nuke, sleep, then rest but with all the gobs in the area I kept getting aggro.

So then someone I knew sent me a /tell from Jeuno I asked him to come help me and he was outside in 2 minutes and Dodo was dead shortly there after. Got the drop too.

I went 1/6

Got 4 consecutive Deadly Dodos today!
7PM PST 9:30PM PST 11:53PM 2:30AM

Wasn't having much luck subbing THF for TH1 so on my 6th run I went Nin/War & camped w/ a Brd friend. There were 2 other RNG campers at the scene. I kept my eye on them while my Brd friend went to hunt Deadly Dodo. I think it was a pretty good lock down. :)

Popped 2.5 hours after each Deady Dodo kill. We started killing PH after 2 hours though.

I've been checking for this guy off and on for awhile now but tonight was the night I decided to officially camp him. Another MNK was there, higher level than me, and I thought he might be camping the Dodo but he was just there for meat/skin so we teamed up! He got a bunch of skins and crap, and I got Dodo skin. Popped after about 45-60mins of camping.

went and killed like 15 dodos, nothing then went to work at 1 PM EST..got back at around 10 30 loged in and looked and there he was... claimed him killed him dropped it, i waslike sweet. took like a minute. lv 72 drg here.

btw, i may be paranoid but things tend to drop more often when you try obtain them as a job that does not need it.

Deadly Dodo = retardedly easy

so i head over to the spawn area with my 56drg
i was a little worried it would kill me so i asked a friend if they would help and they said they would be there in a min
right after the /tell i see it
i go for it and kill it, no sweat

btw, this was all done within a 15 min time period

I wish a million deaths on deadly dodo.

0/4 (2 from last year)

2 today:

Camped at 2:00 AM and he popped a little after 4 AM, nothing, not a single drop.

Logged on at Noon and he's up, unclaimed. Killed, no drop.

This is worse than Nue.

Man DoDo was a SOB I was 1/16 on it, but I got it finly and got the vine from a bcnm and the fang was not hard was 1/3 on it.

I found that the repop time was about 3hr (+/- 45mins) I tended to long and come back about 2hr 45mins after I killed it.

But rember too its not allways like that I stayed up one night for 4.5hrs and finly it pop but no drop also sub rng it helps lots.

So I'm reading all these stories, and it sounds like the drop is fairly rare, so I decided to share my story.
I regularly farm in this area, even though it takes awhile I find it very lucritive. So im in the Spawn area, in fact I didnt even know there was an NM here other than Roc. I chuggin along and I see a Tabar Beak.. I run up and start beating away, then I use Guillotine (I'm a lvl 63 DRK) and I notice it doesnt do anything close to what it should be doing. I'm like WTF! SO i check the name... o.O Deadly Dodo! I tell my LS that I basically ran right into it without even knowing :)! So i whopp its ass, brought me down to about 700hp out of 1100. I didnt even use Drain. Got the drop. DIdnt know what it was for but asked a lvl 67Nin later who was camping it and he told me it was for the Brown Belt.!
If your camping it good luck to you, may you get the odds like I did!

I ran out to this spawn area and found Dodo up and unclaimed. Got the drop. 1/0 on all three brown belt mobs. This is highly unusual for me - usually I am the one who can never get a claim or a drop :P

pld67/nin31 - with ninjutsu blind, paralyze, and blink, this bird did zero damage to me, literally. It was pathetically easy to solo.

Note: a thunder elemental was next to this thing the whole time. I even tried to back away from the ele, but everywhere I went, it would drift over to me again. Luckily I was using ninjutsu and I never needed to cure or flash or anything. So if you are going to camp this ugly guy, make sure either you don't rely completely on magic, or that you can take on an ele at the same time, just in case.

im on shiva and i just killed the fricken birdmonster or whatever and the dodo skin didnt drop. im wonderin if ne one knows if its a lottery pop or if it is on a certain time pop. also from what ive heard it takes forever to get the skin so do u think if i ate my lucky egg would it help or should i save it

Killed it about 15 min ago on asura... me RNG50/THF25, and a DRG60/WAR30 claimed it and had no problems killin it^^ popped in far far west of J-6
1/1 on Dodo here we come Morlbolger and Nue!!

i've been camping this thing on and off for a few days now, finally got the skin. now i am 1/4 on it. I feel kinda bad though, i logged out in his spawn area last night and when i logged back on today there was a 60 something mnk wandinging around, so i ask him if he is hunting dodo and he says hes been there for a couple hours camping it and he is 0/5. Then right behind him dodo pops, i grab it and get the skin after about 2 mins of logging on. I feel kinda bad about it, but oh well, that is the luck of the draw. hope that mnk gets his soon even though he was pretty rude to me after i got the drop.

got the skin today 1/7, been camping him on and off for the past few days, ill need the belt when i get my mnk to 40, so i figure ill get a head start on it in my free time

i can confirm the others posts about how much HP he has, i run a parser while i play and heres a few of the dodo fights:

i think its safe to say dodo has 4600-4800 HP, but dodo has some of the worst accuracy ive seen, being a drk i have a ton of EVA- gear on and he still only landed 3-4 hits on me

I'v camped him 3x now. Missed claim 1st time to a RDM. 2nd time farming/camping I got the claim but no drop. 3rd time again farming/camping I got him cause I was the only 1 there. I stole a Giant Bird Feather after his death I got another Giant Bird Feather, Cockatrice Meat, and Dodo Skin. I'm was a 64 WAR/THF at the time.

id like to tell my story about this little bugger, it all starts on Monday, 10/16/05...i decided to go camp him, im there for about 1.5 hours, he spawns...i got him down to about 1/5 HP(51mnk/war) but i die, i would have won if my 2 hour was ready :(...so a PLD from my LS is near, raises me, and kills it, no drop...so im hanging out waiting for it to respawn and a rdm comes, and we join forces, 3 hours later while im AFK it spawns and he kills it, he says i can lot, but i decide to be honorable and pass since i didnt help kill it, maybe i should have lotted. 5 hours, and 2 more spawns later, still no drop. i have to log for bed, i come back the next day after work to begin anew, not a single spawn from 7pm to 10pm when i went to bed, wednesday, same thing, log on right after work, im alone for maybe an hour, then by some dumb luck, a ninja comes right when its going to spawn, kills it, no drop, he gets the next spawn as well and gets the drop :(...i log after another saddening night.

if you are like me, and extremely unlucky when it comes to drops and spawns, this can be a pain in the behind...im doing the BCNM for the nue fang.

I have been camping the dodo for 3 days now! got six stacks of Cockatrice Meat, Claimed DD 18 times without drop, finally dropped the skin today!

Best strategy I found was to run round constantly in a big circle and kil all the tabar beaks and eventually the dodo will spawn. There was some competition from people farming Cockatrice meats. But nothing too major!
