Stun 'em!

Can't stun him, eh? As some others posted, my parties had no problem with Flood. However, this means you need a DRK in your party. (Why not use DRK as tank? People say PLD is best tank but if you think about it, the "tank" will only ever have one mandragora on him, and it hardly does enough damage to require a PLD... And now you have stun) Stun works, Weapon Skills work (though you probably won't have TP by now) but what I found best was Silence.

If you do like I do, party will have BLM, WHM, and RDM in it. BLM is great because they can nuke OR heal, depending on how the battle is going. WHM is your high-quality healing, RDM is great for Bard healing because he virtually can't run out of MP (Convert ^^) We had me (BLM) start with Elem Seal + Silence, and the WHM did the same when my Silence wore off. I found that, even with an undercapped Enfeebling skill but with high enough INT, I was able to silence this guy midway through Flood with a non elemental-sealed Silence.

Man whats wrong with people? Stun is gotten at 37, and i never leave home without it. Anyone who says that DRK dont need refresh doesnt know about Stun. 25MP is alot for a DRK.

So neways i was getting AF1 from giddeus and my brd friend from my LS helped me so i asked her and our DRG friend to do BCNM 40 with us. So we round up 2 BLM and a RDM (forgetting RDM doesnt have refresh til 41). We get there, i pop in a eyeball soup, my friend tanks, and my bad *** BRD friend (with mary's horn) sleeps the domovois. Im not sure, but i think that the black one is weak against piercing, cuz my DRG friend was doing more damage than me, plus his double thrust did over 300 damage each time. We would double thrust-hard slash, burst Water II. We slaughtered him, he didnt get a chance to use flood. Then i kept auto target on and we ran from domovoi one by one, taking them out, brd keeping the rest sleep.

NO 2 hours were used.

We tried to do it again, but the mages kept getting hate of the BRD, and the RDM refreshed with 0 MP. They got kinda cocky after the first round and it went down from there. Oh yeah. When the black guy ( =/ ) pulls off flood and u use Stun, its gonna look like he is still casting it. Due to the long cast time its gonna go through, then stop right before he casts it, so dont worry.

This guy also drops a scroll of Phalanx as well. :) Not a huge thing but thought it worth mentioning. It's listed on the scroll item lookup but not on this mob's drop list.

Did this fight 5 times last. First one a few didn't know what to expect.

So our plan was: Enter the field, run about half way up, BRD plays us some songs, then NIN and BRD head a little further up for DEF+ and ATT- songs then the NIN cast Ni and runs in the middle of all the mobs, BRD sleeps them, then BRD yells "go" and we enter. Mages and BRD stayed to the right while NIN pulled the mobs one at ta time to the left.

First attempt was RDM/WHM(me), RDM/BLM, BRD/WHM, NIN/WAR, THF/NIN and DRG/WAR. Right off that bat the big guy casts Flood on our NIN, DRG couldn't stun. We died.

Second attempt DRG/WAR was switched with DRK/WAR, don't know how but all the little mandies got away from the bard, we died again. After that it was smooth sailing.

Line-up switched the RDM/BLM for WHM/BLM.

After that we had no problems, third battle went down no problem.

Fourth battle was shaky, our DRK got lag and didnt get to Stun the Flood spell, NIN died I raised him and he rested while the DRK tanked, it was still an easy fight. (Convert was useful here)

After those four attempts the 5th was a piece of cake. Didn't set the record but hey we got Utsusemi: Ni. Sold already for 210k on Caitsith.

Mages used pineapple juice and apple pies. I reccomend bringing a RDM, Convert does help and saves you some gil on the drinks. As well NIN make it very easy, ours had Ni and Ichi so very little healing was needed....other than when he got Flooded. :)

A little richer and more experienced, and definitely ready for more, have 37 seals, just need to farm 3 more.

Fun fun

This guy's a trip and a half if you have a good party that knows what they're doing.

Did this guy 6 times last night, lost 2, but won the rest.

Party was: RDM/SMN (myself), WHM/???, DRK/???, WAR/NIN, BRD/WHM, RNG/NIN

We all buffed before even entering the circle so we'd get the better benefits of Protectra III, Shellra II, Blinkga (from my SMN sub), Stoneskin, Aquaveil, and I'd pop off some Refresh'es that wouldn't last long anyway, but basically every buff you can you want.

Went in, we got close to the mob, but not enough for them to aggro so we'd set up. Bard used Ballad and Minuet, then got locked onto his target while the rest locked onto Dvorovoi. I locked onto the big black onion head and prepped a silence just incase of Flood.

Bard went in first, trained them all to the right, slept 'em. The rest grab Dvorovoi and take him to the other side while WHM and I heal any damage that needs to be.

Pretty much after Dvorovoi is dead, this fight is a breeze. Just pull one little onion head off at a time and kill it 'til they're down to one, then gang up on the last one and maul the crap out of it. ^_^

Woo, made so much money off that last night, can't wait for the stuff to sell ^_^

EDIT: Almost forgot: WHM and I used Roasted Mushrooms for the +MP regen while resting. Yagudo Drinks and Pineapple Juices for Refresh affect (plus Ballad if we had a spare moment). BRD used Fish Mithkabobs for the +DEF. Convert was a lifesaver at times (shoot me one time, I forgot about it for some reason, then the party is saying "CONVERT!", I'm like "Convert? Huh? !! CONVERT! OH @$()" Marcatil uses Convert! ^_^)

On the last note, I think personally, get Ballad if you *have the spare moment* - Remember, your priority is to bring down these dudes, and yes MP is important, but if the little onion heads are slept, uh, well, you lose ^_^. Best option, ask the bard to use ballad AFTER Hoarde Lullaby for safety purposes.

Well tryed this today for the first time, Had NO IDEA what to expect.

Party was PAL, WHM, BLM, BRD, DRK, DRG

sounds like a good party for this, everything was going great, untill our bard got put to sleep by the Black one. We ended up just killing the black one - took everything we had, brd was dead, whm had no MP, I was the PLD that just turned level 40 and didn't have all my best stuff for that level yet.

the other 7 swarmed me, used 2 hour, knew I was going to die, seeing we had no bard and a whm with no mp.

failed. We are going to try again tommorow after we all ungrade our equipment as much as we can, Bard wants to get as much CHR as possable.

In the Star Orb fight in giddeus you will fight 7 mandragora's. 6 normal white ones (domovoi) and one, slightly bigger, black one called dvorovoi. The black dorovoi has a few thigns to worry about.

First of all it has some nasty status spells, it will cast many ~ga enfeebles and sometimes a nasty spell that gives a number of ailments (much liek a malboro's breath attack)

You can cast aspir (my maxed dark knight dark skill drained an average of 34 mp per cast), but cannot cast drain on the creature. The other 6 are very drainable.

and the big thign to watch for as lexibillion posted...is flood. Stunning it with weapon skills or weapon bash doesnt' work, silence doesn't stop it...NOTHING seems to stop the bugger when he starts casting it. so unless you can take 600-700 damage-get barwater up or prepare to die.

good luck with this battle...you'll need it ;)

I was able to interupt with Flat Blade (stuns target) not sure what you did wrong but you can interupt the cast.

Shield bash works...ive done it
Silence works....elemental seal first though.
if u can keep all the guys asleep and pick em off one at a time your should be ok.
GET A RDM....CONVERT IS 100% NECESSARY!

Convert is hardly necessary, two White Mages can handle it fine if they know what they are doing and have a few Yag Drinks (I always bring at least 3 of these to a BCNM battle). Even without the drinks they could probably manage, but it would be a lot harder.

Flood CAN be interrupted by stunning weapon skills and/or elemental seal+silence, even sleep it you can get it to stick. Keep in mind however that stunning weapon skills do NOT have a 100% chance to stun the target, so make sure you have plenty of backup.

did this bcnm fight 3 times with ls last night on asura. won 2 of 3 times and set the time record for the server. got 2 scrolls of phalanx, but no erase.

its not easy. you better have a good bard and a good main tank or you are in trouble.

You only need a good bard, 2 healer (preferably 1 rdm/blm for elemental seal Silence) and 3 damage dealer, there is no time for tanking really, you would want to kill it asap. ^^

My usually setup consist with at least 2 rng, 1x damage dealer, 1 whm, 1 rdm/blm and 1 bard.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about with this thing. I've done this BCNM 28 times and have lost zero. My job? I'm the bard. Here is my advice:
Ideal party:
Bard (duh), Rng, Drk, Nin, Rdm, Whm.
Bard and Drk are the only musts, tanks are optional.
Nin, Drk and Rng should eat meat mithkabobs, Bard eats a fish mithkabob. Whm and Rdm eat pies if they want, and juice is a must for the whm.
Once you get a hand of it, you can do this with only one mage.

Gear:
Bard needs as much def as possible, and Mary's horn is MUST, signa is a nono. (-VIT Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass).

The Plan:
First things first, you gotta get buffed up, my personal setup, mages stay on the circle, melees go halfway up the ramp. Mages get ballad, melees get double Minuet and I, the bard get double Minne.

Next comes the first sleep, the most important one. There are two ways of doing this: the second one being the riskier, but if it works, it is better.

1) The tank runs in and gathers aggro from all of the plants. The bard follows, keeping just close enough to sleep, but not too close that he/she gets aggro. The bard then (quickly) chooses a target that will hit all of the plants with sleep, and goes for it. While they are asleep, the bard moves to the centre of the cluster of plants, and chooses his sleep target (which will be the last plant killed) which will not be the black one. Kill the black one first, the rest is cake.

2)Bard runs to the very edge of the circle and SINGLE sleeps the black plant. The rest will chase after the bard, when they get all gathered and in range for sleep, bard chooses a target and goes for it. Then, assuming all sleeps land, the melees go jump the black plant, while the bard sleeps the little ones. The possibel risk of this? If the black one resists sleep (about a 10% chance with +15ish chr) the bard likely will be paralyzed or flooded. This caused 3 near deaths, luckily my drk got off the stuns to stop the floods. The paralysis just about killed me, had to cast 3 sleeps for it to actually go off.

During the fight:
Drk: Make sure your "Other's special actions" chat filter is not on, and as soon as you see the black plant casting flood, spam that stun macro! other than that, the usual dmg dealing festivities.

Other dmg dealers: Blast the hell out of them.

Tank: Try and hold hate, will be kinda hard because the damage dealers will not hold back. You should be selecting the next target from the cluster of plants.

Healers: Stay directly beside the bard for the first 2-3 sleeps, if you heal the bard, and you get aggro and you are not near the bard, that plant is gonna be running all over the place. Whms, keep the bard paralyze free.

Bard: YOU WILL GET HIT. Those who have played tank characters before shouldn't have a problem here. You are gonna get smacked like crazy, sometimes bringing you from full health, down to orange in one second. Do NOT be hasty on the sleeps, however. Make sure they are ALL awake before sleeping them again. Even if 5 wake up and only one is still asleep, just wait for it to wake up before sleeping. Sleeping too early is the number one cause for problems.
Also, in between sleeps, make use of your mp by either healing yourself, putting up blink, or healing others.

Flood protection:
Drk stuns should be the main protection, however if for some reason this doesn't work, there are other ways out.

1) Bard ownage. Only do this if your bard is confident, or in my case, cocky about his/her skill. In this situation, when flood is cast, the bard will run within range and single sleep the black plant within the six hundred bajillion hour cast time.

2) Utsusemi ninja tank ownage. While the Dvorovoi takes a 15 minute break to cast flood, put up some utsusemi, and that 400 damage spell will become a: Ninja Tank's shadow absorbs the damage. message.

3) Weaponskills ownage. Shoulder tackle, Leg sweep, Skull Breaker, etc. Not 100% success rate, but something more around 99.87435% success rate (I have never seen it fail).

4) Run away crying ownage. Huh!? well, when you have a pld or war tank, no stun, no sleep and no stunning weaponskill, the easiest way to avoid is by running. When you see "Dvorovoi starts casting Flood" unlock from the monster by pressing either "H" or "*" and turn around and boot it as far back to the beginning as you can. USUALLY this works, one time, the pld got hit real hard, down to 14 health, the others, he ran so far it said that he was out of range, and the spell stopped casting. You must be REALLY fast to use this method.

5) Heal up and pray ownage. You see flood, pld gets healed to full and takes a bite out of the Flood sandwich.

Sidenotes: Flood takes approximately 3 years to cast.
Domovois are weak.
Galka and Elvaan bards own BCNM40
Rdms > Whms.
My worst party beaten with: War, war, thf, whm, smn, brd (me).
Best party beaten with: Drk(Mills), Whm(Cubsta), Rdm(Kneebreaker, or Tamora), Rng(Guiltsa), Nin(Skoobs... who i own), and Brd(Helio, me)

Best advice: Do not be nervous, don't be afraid of flood, paralyna the bard as soon as he/she is paralyzed, do not put the plant to sleep too early.

Approximate total earnings off BCNMs: 1.5mil
I apologize for the length of the post… but I have a crush on BCNM40, I love to talk about it.
