This is not an original composition. This is a retelling of the information that can be found at: The Bilingual Website of Final Fantasy XI
I can only hope to do this justice.

Advanced Guide to Gardening

When most start off gardening it’s usually just for sh*ts-n-giggles. You’ve got all these seeds and some extra gil, so why not? But the first time that a beginner gets a bumper crop of 20+ fire crystals they go from the sh*ts-n-giggles stage to the “Oh my god, I can make some serious money!” stage.

Your thoughts become consumed with figuring out just what exactly you did to get such a massive yield and then repeating that formula again and again.

But therein lies the rub. See, gardening is like crafting in that you take a set of items, put them all together and get a final product. But even if you use the same pot, the same seed and the same crystal, your results can, and often do, change.

It’s All About Relationships

And I’m not talking about the “Will you be mine” kind of relationships either.

Most of you have seen this at some point or other:

*******=>*Fire*=>*****
****/*************\***
Water****Light****Ice**
***|*******|*******|**
Lightning*Dark***Wind**
****\*************/***
******<=*Earth*<=*****

(gotta love ASCII art!)

From this (rather bare bones) diagram, it’s quite easy to see that Fire is strong versus Ice and weak versus Water. These strong and weak relationships are an underlining principle throughout Vana’diel, including gardening.

The elements saturate every aspect, from the seeds, to the flowerpots, to the proper times for planting, feeding and harvesting.

The Elements of the Flowerpots
Earthen Flowerpot = Earth
Brass Flowerpot = Fire
Ceramic Flowerpot = Water
Porcelain Flowerpot = Wind

The Elements of the Seeds
Vegetable seeds = Earth
Grain seeds = Fire
Fruit seeds = Water
Herb seeds = Wind

The Days of the Week
Firesday
Earthsday
Watersday
Windsday
Icesday
Lightningsday
Lightsday
Darksday

The Phases of the Moon
New Moon
Waxing Crescent Moon
Quarter Moon
Waxing Gibbous Moon
Full Moon
Waning Gibbous Moon
Last Quarter Moon
Waning Crescent Moon

To determine which day of the week it is and what phase the moon is currently in, make use of the ’/clock’ function. You’ll get your information right there. If you’re not in-game or maybe you just want to get a heads-up on when the Full Moon will occur, head on over to Virtual Vana'diel Timer (it has plenty of other information as well).

Now, when to plant, what to plant, when to feed, etc. is determined by what you want to harvest. There’s a list of commonly known harvests for most of the seed-crystal-pot combinations at the end of this guide. If you see something on there that you like, make note of the seed type, flowerpot type and feed crystal used.

Day To Plant
If you’re going for items (and not Little Worms or Rock Salt), there are two days which are ideal.
1) When the element of the seed and the day are the same.
2) When the element of the seed is strong versus the element of the day.
If crystals are your game, then there are three choices.
(unless you want Light or Dark, then just go to 3)
1) Lightsday
2) Darksday
3) (now this one is tricky) First, you have to know what crystal you are going to feed the plant. Now, locate that element on the elemental relationship wheel. Whatever element your feed crystal is weak versus, is the same element of the day to plant.
Example: I want fire crystals (they’re so useful!) and, according to the elemental relationship wheel, Fire is weak versus Water. So, I would want to plant the seed on Watersday.

Feed the Plant Day
For those desiring items (again, not Rock Salt or Little Worms), you should feed the plant on one of two days
1) The day with the same element as the crystal.
2) The day whose element is weak versus the element of the crystal.
Example: (Fire Crystals aren’t items, but here’s an example anyways) If I want to get Fire Crystals I would feed the seed with a Water Crystal. So, I would want to feed the seed on either Watersday or Firesday.

Harvesting Day
Very simple, the closer to the full moon that you harvest, the larger the yield of your harvest.

Now, for a cautionary note:
Unless you want to harvest rock salt, you should not harvest on the day when the element of the seed and the feed crystal is strong versus the element of the day.
Example: So, lets say I’m using Fruit Seeds to get my Fire Crystals. Fruit Seeds = Water, I used a Water Crystal for feed, so if I were to harvest on Firesday, I’m liable to end up with a hand full of Rock Salt. Not what I wanted.

Some further tips:
- Some believe that the number of times you check the plant influences the harvest. Supposedly, not checking the plant at all gives more crystals and checking it frequently helps with getting a better harvest (i.e. no Little Worms or Rock Salt)

- It is thought that the flowerpots share an affinity for certain regions.
Earthen Flowerpot = Sarutabaruta = Earth Crystal, Tarutaru rice, Kukuru beans, Pototo, Saruta Cotton
Brass Flowerpot = Gustaberg = Fire Crystal, Black Pepper, La Theine Cabbage
Ceramic Flowerpot = Ronfaure = Water Crystal, Millioncorn, Sunflower seeds
Porcelain Flowerpot = Jeuno = Wind Crystal, Blue Peas
What does this affinity mean for you? Crops associated with a region will have higher yields if they’re seeded in the appropriate flowerpot.

- If your feed crystals’ element is the same as the element of the seed, you can sometimes get a harvest that can’t be acquired any other way.

- A note on speed of maturing: if the feed crystal is weak versus the seed you’ll have quick growth. And if the feed crystal is strong versus the seed, growth will be slower. Slow growth isn’t always a bad thing, as there can be some crops that can’t be had any other way.

- Little Worms and Rock Salt are typically the result of using a feed crystal that is either the same element as the seed or a feed crystal that is strong versus the seed.

- If you want crystals you should not use a feed crystal that is strong versus the seed. So, don’t feed a Grain Seed with a Water Crystal, or an Herb Seed with an Ice Crystal, etc

- Again, with crystals, if you use a feed crystal that is the same element as the seed, you will get a larger crop of crystals. This only works for four crystals: Ice, Earth, Lightning and Fire. Grain Seed + Fire Crystal = Ice Crystal, Fruit Seed + Water Crystal = Fire Crystal, etc.

- Whenever you check on your plants your moogle will make a comment. Some believe that the harvests vary depending on the comment. They will check the plant until they get the comment they want to hear and then harvest.

Here is the example of a Fire Crystal crop, condensed:
The flowerpot is the Brass Flowerpot.
The seed is the Fruit Seed.
The crystal used is Water Crystal.
Plant the Fruit Seed on either Lightsday, Darksday or Watersday.
Feed the Water Crystal when the plant needs it.
You can do this again, seeing as how the seed is a Fruit Seed. You do not have to.
Harvest should be during the Full Moon, on any day except Firesday.

And here’s the promised chart. It is far from definitive. After each crop is what some have yielded.
The Fruit Seed combinations are quite bare, there are so very many of them. Hopefully we can fill this in.

Wildgrass seed
* earth crystal
Results --- Vomp Carrots, Yellow Rock , Lighting Crystals, Little Worms

* Ice Crystal
Results --- Zeghram Carrots, Wind Crystals, Various Greens.

This comes in handy for raising my Chocobo
and selling extra Carrots for profit since i always get more than i need.
on Caitsith both Zeghram and Vomp Carrots are both 10k a stack or more.
If anybody has any other info or advice on wildgrass seeds it would be very helpful

I've been trying to start gardening so I went out and bought a pot and some seeds... however when I selected the gardening option my mog said he needed a flowerpot first so I tried trading it to him... got nothing. Then I tried mog storage and the furniture storage options... still nothing. The only thing I can think of is that maybe I have to go back to Windy from Bastok but somehow that doesn't seem right. If that is the case why wouldn't they grey out the gardening option like they do with the arrangement option?

First you must be in your hometown moghouse, not a rental.
Place the pot in your moghouse.
Then, put the pot on a workbench or anything it allows you to.
Now you'll have the option to examine the pot.
You will need the seeds to be in your moghouse also. Not the storage.

Crystals are the easiest thing to Garden, and follow a simple pattern, if you want to be sure to get crystals. You can garden crystals other ways, but quite frankly, you are doing it by accident. Keep in mind, this does not include Dark and Light Crystals. I will do a later post for those.

Now everyone knows, or should know the elemental wheel, turned into a line for an easier read: ('->' means item to left of symbol is strong against item to right)

Fire->Ice->Wind->Earth->Lightning->Water->Fire->Ice->Wind->Earth->.......

1) You must use a crystal for fertilizer to get a crystal harvest
2) Check on your plant at least once every midnight to midnight day, or your plant will wilt.
3) Now its a simple pattern. Know that below the symbol '-x' means x to the left of the given position.

Example:

You want Fire Crystals:

1) Start at 'Fire' on the chart.
2) Plant on 'Fire' - 2 (Lightning Day)
3) Feed Crystal is 'Fire' - 1 (Water Crystal)
4) Feed Day is, According to the above guide, Water or Fire Day. However, in my experience, and from other guides, the best chances are from planting on the day the crystal you want is weak towards. In other words Watersday. Thats what I go with.
5) The last and most important rule. Do not ever Harvest on the day that has the same element as the crystal you are harvesting for, or your will get rock salf or worms.

Now, a few guidelines to make things better:
1) If possible, plant your seeds and harvest in a pot that has the same element as the crystal you want, in other words, Brass Pot for Fire Seeds(dont use grain seeds.) You will get twice as many seeds
2) Do not use seeds with the same element as the crystal element you want. In other words, you will not get Fire Crystals from Grain Seeds, which have fire element.

So remember the pattern. If we were talking about Harvesting Ice Crystals:
1) Start at Ice on the Chart.
2) Plant on 'Ice' -2 (Water)
3) Feed Crystal is 'Ice' -1 (Fire Crystal)
4) Feed Day is 'Ice' -1 (Fire) or maybe Ice(less likely)
5) Harvest Day (NOT Iceday), a day closest to full moon.

And in case you forgot, with some editions missing from the guide above:

Elements of Pots
Brass=Fire
Earthen=Earth
Ceramic=Water
Porcelain=Wind
Arcane=? (Ive looked all over for this, if someone knows, please tell me.

Elements of Seeds
Grain Seeds=Fire
Vegetable Seeds=Earth
Fruit Seeds=Water
Herb Seeds=Wind
Tree Cuttings=Ice
Tree Saplings=Dark
Cactus Stems=Light

I hope you find this useful, if so, please rate me. And like I said, if you know the element of the Arcane Flowerpot, Please tell me.

Wow i was really bummed today when i got only 1 ore out of 10 ores.. this is my second time round of gardening for Lightning Ore.. first time i had 3 plants and got a yield of only one Lightning Ore and this time it was the same..

Like quite a few people have suggested, you should go to the fire ore section there is a really useful post on there which i am going to experiment with this time round.. I was hoping to build up my cycle of 10 plants once a week and realing in at least 1 million a week but obviously what i thought i knew about gardening wasn't enough.. My advice after losing out is READ ALL THE THREADS THAT PEOPLE SUGGEST.. I am gonna go off and start growing again.. and then i will repost on here in 3 weeks and tell you all my results..

My first method was.. plant on lightningday, check two times a real life day and it didnt matter which game day i checked.. fed lightning on lightningday both times.. and i harvested on lightningday and got one ore out of 10.. so um.. any suggestions on why that went so wrong please send me an e-mail moshaguy5@aol.com but yea i am definately gonna try these new theories out.. thanks guys everyone who has posted guides on here not just the main one, although that one helps an awful lot too :p

I'm an alchemist and I'm also doing a quest in windurst. I just want to be able to grow a sobbing fungus. I've searched all over the internet and I find easy info on what pots and seed to use. I find hardly nothing on what furniture to set the pot on, what day to plant/examine/harvest, and what moon phase. The closest AND CLEAREST I found was the bottom of this page: http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/gardening/ But honestly none of it makes any sense. I want a sobbing fungus which comes from herb seeds and herb seeds are a Wind-liking thing so does that mean I plant the seed on a Windsday? Or harvest it on a Windsday? Or on a Windsday that lands on a full moon? Since herb seed is Wind-liking, does growing it on a Earth-liking table reduce chances? I mean, there needs to be something for us alchemists so we can plant a sure hit or close to it.

Theory on Herb Seeds+Crystal

I have a theory based on information i have read while researching how to grow my own Ice Crystals for crafting. It appears :

Herb Seeds + Fire Crystal = Ice Crystal
(Note*- The amount of yeild varies please check above)

Herb Seeds + Water Crystal = Fire Crystal
(Note*- Same as above)

---If you didnt notice the pattern i did here it is. Fire (Crystal you feed) is Strong against Ice (crystal you harvest)

---Water (Crystal fed) is strong against Fire (crystal you harvest)

Hellfisher Scholar had great yeild but it is my assumtion (based on rumors) that his high yield was because of the Moon Phases. I will find out once i grow my crystals.

Due to this theory -
Ice would make Wind Crystals, Wind->Earth, Earth->Lightiing, and Lightning->Water, I suppose Dark->Light and Light->Dark, again i will check up on this. I used the graph from Katadyn to use this relationship, i guess i should write it down. So if you need crystals cheaply this should be the way to go, if it works, i will update with any new found info, or please reply if you find any.

Please reveiw this guide for more info on Examining the plant and Crystal theroy (fewer examines better chance of crystals) like i said please reveiw it. Good Luck to any of you who wish to grow Crystals for profit or Crafting!

-----Edit---------
I have just grown 4 Ice Crystals to confirm my theory, more studies to reinsure(on a mass scale now) are underway!

Um... I think I'm weird, but I had accidentally planted a tree sappling in a brass pot instead of a tree cutting... so figuring that it wouldn't ammount to much I hardly examined it, and I never fed it anything. A day or two after my batch of sapplings that was I growing were harvested this thing said it was ready to be harvested... so I picked it. And I got a light ore. So can someone here explain to me how the hell I got an ore out of a plant that I didn't feed, and hardly ever checked???

Im growing tree cuttings, I wanted to try something different. SOemone said it took a real world month to grow them, however, its only been a few days and their ready to be fed a crystal. Because I want to try to grow elemental ore, and my MH has a powerful ice energy, maybe I should use ice crystals for ice ore if there is such a thing? I don't want to end up with a pile of rock salt.

Here is what I did EXACTLY
step one: Go to Pikko's Pots website! it is the best for gardening info!

Now to the gardening;
I planted in two pots which will be reffered to as P1 and P2 (plant one and plant two)

P1- Herb seed planted in Brass pot in Bastok @ 13:00 Watersday 90% Full moon

P2 Herb seed planted in Brass pot in Bastok @ 13:03 Watersday 90% Full moon

I examined both plants @ 1:08 Firesday 76% WG

I examined both plants @ 22:00 Iceday 67% WG

P1- fed Water crystal 21:19 Firesday 19% WC

P2- fed Water crystal 1:07 Iceday 10% NM

P1 Harvested @ 23:18 Iceday 67% WG
P1 Results 20 FIRE CRYSTALS!

P2 Harvested @1:29 Iceday 95% FM
P2 Results 18 FIRE CRYSTALS

Now imagine my joy when I went to the AH and stacks of fire crystals were selling for 6.5k and mine sold before I made it back to my MH XD

Good luck everybody :) Happy Harvesting!

1. I planted grain in a ceramic pot on lightsday (First Quater 43%)
2. I fed the water crystal on Watersday (waning crescent 33%)
3. I harvested on lightsday (Full moon 90%).

I GOT 8 La Theine cabbages.

I've been growing ores for 4 months now, and my success rate has dropped with each attempt. My original theory followed what I read somewhere regarding a direct relationship between the length of gestation/growth and the final harvesting results. My most recent tests proved this very, very wrong with 5% ore produced. I then read your posts describing the "elemental attribute" of the saplings, and basically, it appears I've been overdosing the plants with attention. So, thank you for your insight and analysis of this system.

However, I'm now curious about the other results of your studies - in particular the "glowrates" and the approximate 'sweet spot', random though it may be, of the elemental attribute. In particular, if the gestation period can be lengthened while the balance of the elemental score of the saplings can be maintained, would it result in a higher, lower, or approximately equal harvest?

I hoped to gain some knowledge from your website, but it appears it no longer exists. Is the data still available somewhere? Have you vanished from the digital realm entirely? Am I, as I fear, 2 years too late to learn from those who came before?

If you want to guarantee that you get at least one ore per mule pls read the fire ore section of allakhazam and then pikko's pots and then www.ariah.curiouss.com

Thanks to about 13 months of ore gardening I have figured out every secret about gardening except that I can't seem to get more than 5/10 pots of fire ore anymore. Maybe this was an update change.

The best general info you will need is:
0) yes it is saplings not cuttings (for those who have asked me while I'm online hehe)

1) it takes generally 20.5 real life days to garden saplings into ores using porcelain pots.

2) wearing harvesting gear when you harvest for ores will lower your percentage of getting ores.

3) wearing harvesting gear while examining during the growth phase will increase your chances of getting ores (sneaky squaresoft).

4) wearing harvesting gear while examining will speed up the growth of the sapling by +1 day usually

5) the purpose of wearing gear is to help you speed up and slow down your growth to help you time a full moon harvest

6) I have no definitive conclusions about a new moon harvest.

7) porc pots seem to be the best way to get ice fire and dark ores. I cannot definitively conclude about the other ores because it would not be fair to.

8) examining actually does have 2 results. It's not a rumour and it does affect the growth.

9) YES you figured it out. The elemental day you examine on does affect the ELEMENTAL STRENGTH THAT YOU BUILT UP IN THE SAPLING. The correct harvest with the correct elemental strength percentage will almost always get you 2 to 4 ores out of 10 pots. Be warned that examining too much on only the elemtal day of the ore you are going for will not only get you a bad yield, it may get you the worst yield of the failure crops of the ore (ie: 4 cinnamon sticks instead of 42). So unfortunately only examining on iceday for the whole growth of the sapling will not get you an ice ore because you over did it. I will not give away the exact percentage because the /random affects this percent and you miss sometimes even though you do it perfect.

10) The "almost" part of the "almost always" from #9 above is that there is a /random function built into the harvest that will always affect your harvest

11) Ok I'LL GIVE ONE MORE BIG ONE AWAY THAT WILL SAVE YOU A LOT. BUSTING AN OLD EXPLOIT: There is a rumour that you could use a trick called the "one slot free trick". It was all over the japanese sites for a long time. It seems that this trick doesn't work anymore from sometime around March or April of 2004. Probably a patch. The trick worked that if you filled your inventory (the moghouse side) with 49/50 items or 79/80 with gobbiebag VI completed... you would then get a message from your moogle that says "Cannot harvest" or something like that. The reason being that it was trying to harvest a non-ore result that was more than 12 of them. ie: 24-52 cinnamon sticks are a common fire ore failure which takes more than one slot in your moghouse. As you know it takes one slot per stack of whatever (cinnamon, platinum leaves, persikoes, etc). So people used to make sure that they would either get an ore (one slot) or every once in a while another harvest that was less than one stack (ie: 8 platinum leaves).

This does not work anymore (probably due to one of the 1000 an anti-exploit patches)and will give you more ore failures or rock salts or worms.

12) Tied to #11. Each attempted harvest results in the equivalent of one examine. So attempting and getting blocked out because you have too many items in your moghouse results in almost zero chance for an ore. The /random sometimes saves you.

13) 22 maple tables will save your bum. Yes your moghouse fits exactly 22 maple tables. This gives you almost +200 gardening mogenhancement. The purpose of these tables is: it allows you to time your full moon better by not allowing the plants to die before you get to harvest them on the day you want. Use the ffxi timers to time your PLANTING day about 20.5 days before the BEGINNING of a full moon cycle. The tables will cover the rest so you can reach the right element's day depending on the ore you are going for.

14) Pay attention to the elemental day you feed your crystals on because it will completely change your yield if you feed on the wrong day. Do not believe it if some say they still are successful no matter what day they fed the crystal because successful is relative. You always have a chance to get ONE ore if you plant a sapling on any day and feed it one of any crystal and harvest on any day. IF you want to shoot for 2-6 ores out of 10 pots then you must follow the recipes of the few people who have carefully charted their plant elemental days and moons, feed elemental days, and harvest elemental days and moons. I will not reveal it in this post but you will find the full recipes for every type of ore all over allakhazam. I guarantee you can find it within about 3 mins. I have posted the recipe for high yield fire ores in a really really obvious place.

15) Harvesting has 2 examining results as well. You figure it out. Remember doing too much of one type will give you rock salts.

16) Harvesting on the day of your crystals and element of the ore you are going for can ruin your chance of getting ores if you have built up too much elemental strength in the ore already. Check the fire ore section of allakhazam for more info and a perfect example. This is truly the secret.

17) In light of 16 then harvesting on the opposite day of the element of the ore you are going for will give you a way better chance of getting a good (more than 1 ore) yield if you have built up too much elemental strength in the sapling's growth already.

18) Yes if you are really patient then growing your saplings and planting them without removing them from the left side of your moghouse will be like adding your name to your synthesized item. = HQ. Think about it. nobody has time for 2 months of gardening just to get an ore right? b Remember this only helps by a few percent so you decide whether its worth it because the /random could kill you anyways.

19) Ok I'll give you a big hint in a different context so as to not get banned from allakhazam for giving away too much. Harvesting from the city of the pots origin once gave me 23/10 tree saplings when I was growing saplings from cuttings. Yes you can get 3 saplings from 1 cutting if you do it correctly. That is a hqhqhq+1 yield. I was using porcelain pots and long distance harvested in... _____ well you'll find it somewhere on allakhazam. The rumour is correct and will increase your chances of a high yield by somewhere around 10%. The rest of the explanation of that kind of high yield came from moon phase and elemental day. And of course examining.

20) Examining 2x a day gave me my highest yield.

21) Mooncycles do matter but it's one specific type of full moon that will give you the highest yield.

22) The failures of ice ores are the best NPC item in the game. One of my harvests gave me 1.1million in platinum leaves through the NPC and.... YAY I didn't even have to wait for anything to sell.

23) "Glowrates" are the real story and require you to look at your plant. This means it conflicts with the long distance harvest from above. This requires you to choose when you have the perfect glowrate by going to your home country and checking the glowrate. THEN WARP BACK TO THE CITY THAT MATCHES THE POTS ORIGIN and do the harvest there. Tadaa!!! The best of both worlds.

24) Oh you ask what the heck glowrates are? ^^ Start searching allakhazam and you'll find out where I posted info about them. If you look carefully it's right under your nose hehe.

Well that's it for now I guess. I wish you the best of luck with your ore growing and I am really hoping you will succeed.

C ya guys and good luck,

First thing I have done some gardening my first time I harvested 2 Fire Ore's from and aton of cinnimon.
But i havnt gardened in a while I cant remeber the formual I used..

I think I used Tree Saplings planted on Darksday
Then about one week later it gave me the option to feed them. I used a Fire Crystal on Firesday, Then about one week later same thing, and again. til harvest on waxing 98% around there at least on firesday. Can someone fill in the rest for me.

Hey guys there is something called glowrates that I have discovered that makes a huge difference in your harvest. I have somehow obtained 6/10 fire ores from one mule. Average with this method is about 3-4.

1- glowrates
2- furniture
3- building up or decreasing the elemental strength of the growth phase for an optimal harvest

I would reccomend first checking out the basic guide, the advanced guide, then pikko's site, then my posts in the fire ore section of allakhazam, and then my site at www.ariah.curiouss.com

if you gain your knowledge in this order you should be set.

I also have managed to grow ores in 13-16 days but it has a lower yield.

There is also a way to guarantee an ore but it takes almost 1.5 months with the pot i know you know I'm talking about and a few tricks. So it's not worth it considering how many you're allowed to have in your house.

Take care and happy gardening,
Ariah

Heres a little guide to make a Water Ore. This is EXACTLY what I did, and I got a nice 120k from a Water Ore in Jeuno:

Earthen Pot > Tree Saplings > Planted On Watersday, Full Moon (90%) > Two Water Crystals When I Could > Water Ore When Ready To Harvest

It took me a whole MONTH (Earth time) to grow these, but it's WELL worth it! I changed about 7k into 120k, and you can too! ^^

Does anyone know if the day of the week you EXAMINE the plant has any bearing on the outcome? So far, it all seems to be random what you get.

Not completely random, but I've been trying to grow Red Rocks, and all I get is Margurites and Rock Salt with the OCCASIONAL success.

The first ice crystal should be fed on Iceday. The second should be fed on Iceday too but I have heard accounts on Windsday as well. Again this is a very rare harvest and tree saplings take a long time before harvest.
