For those of you wondering, the best way to skill up on Mercury is to camp the shop in Bibiki Bay. More often than not, the Cobalt Jellies are DIRT CHEAP there and I've seldom run into any competition. Good luck. :)
Do not skill up on this. Jellyfish arn't cheap and no npc sells them so you have to over pay on the ah or camp a guild. Take poison powder to 12 then go to echo drops to 20. You can sell the poison powder on the Ah and make the money back from the fish and you can sell the echo drops in jeuno quickly for a decent profit. This craft is only as hard as you make it.

On the contrary, I used these to get to 16 with no problems. Buy or fish the jellies, farm the lightning crystals, and save the Mercury for Poison Potions.
Sells 11k a stack on Leviathan. Poison Potions are 26k+ a stack.
I made very good profit from this synth. Only took me one night from 6am-6am (24 hours) to go from 7-18 and made 90k from the Potions I sold.
However, it is not for the impatient. I could say that for the whole game, but people don't possess the patient for crafts and look for the cheapest way not the best.
I wouldn't recommend this synth for newcomers to a craft nor would I recommend Alchemy as your first craft. This requires either patience or money which few people have.
I lost maybe 20% of my jellyfish on this synth and maybe 2% of my Mercury on the Poison Potions.
With the guild price system updated the jellyfish are still camped (morons) and at a constant higher price.
If the High Level idiots would leave these alone, which people are too stubborn/stupid/greedy to do, this would be easier and more cost effective for newcomers to Alchemy. But as long as FFXI is alive, so are the jerks that ruin it for everyone.

Began to craft these at level 7 alchemy with no Image support, got through two stacks of jelly fish and only made three mercury, got + 0.3 skill up in total. I thought these were capped level 10 at the time >_<
I will solo it or die trying!
