Frustration! Then success!
# Nov 21 2010 at 6:43 PM Rating: Decent
Ok . . . so after trying for hours to catch these with minimal success (and Denizanasi in Aht Urghan) I figured out that fly lure does NOT work very well. The best bait is insect balls in Selbina (no other fish will bite insect balls in Selbina). Hope this helps someone else who wants to level alchemy.
Sabiki Rig

If you wanna try fishing these using the Sabiki Rig, and avoid other fish that tend to bite on it such as quus or sardines, I recommend the ponds in SSG. This is the only area I could find with this result for the rig. Only other fish to catch is Coral Butterfly, and they won't bite the rig. You also might consider canceling items here, for you can catch (as if you didn't know) Coral Fragments, which are good for breaking your line. Just some food for thought :)

If you're skilling Alchemy...

***** Jellyfish, go for Denizanasi is Whitegate. You can fish 'em at the ports, I'm getting a ton of them with Halcyon Rod + Worm Lure. Combine is the same; four Denizanasi + Lightning Crystal = one Mercury, caps at 16 too.
Slow

I used little worms + halcyon rod in Selbina. I only caught Cobalt Jellyfish and the occasional rusty item, however, over half the time I didn't catch anything. ; ;

Where to catch them frequently...
# Apr 15 2006 at 12:04 PM Rating: Decent
Location: Selbina
Rod: Fastwater
Bait: Little Worm

I catch nothing but cobalt jellyfish with this setup. Not sure about the skill level, I hear it's 4 but, just like synthesis, you could get an extra .1 or .2 skill up even if you are the same level as the cap.

If you continue to skillup beyond the cap, that means you have not really hit the cap. I personally never had a synthesis that gave me skillups @ cap :P

Fishing cap for these is 5.

In Port Jeuno off of the docks I was catching Cobalt relatively easily with a Halcyon Rod and Robber Rig. Level 27 Fisherman, all 4 pieces of fishing gear. Hope that helps any starting alchemists like me. ^_^

Perfect for a new alchemists
# Feb 28 2006 at 2:41 AM Rating: Decent
If your a new alchemist and skilling up on crafting poison dust and mercury like myself, fish in Port Jeuno with a Composite fishing rod and a worm lure. While fishing for the next 30 minutes I was only catching jellys and yellow globes.

Well the reported cap on these is wrong

I'm a skill level 4 fisherman and I just got a +.1 realing in one of these. So cap is at least 5 maybe higher - I'll let you know.

I've been fishing these a lot lately (reason I started fishing) mainly because I need em for my alchemy (currently at 66.something)

Incidentaly I'm having a better ratio of jellyfish to items by using meatballs at khazam wharf rather than jeuno (many many more rusty buckets and leggings in jeuno)... After more fishing, I can't say the ratio is any better but Phantam Kelp stacks so you're not going as often to a vendor to empty stuff (not to mention if you fish on the airship dock part there is a vendor right there - the duty free chick).

Ok after fishing abotu 5 stacks of bait at level 5 I think I can safely say these cap at 5 not 3 as per other sources. I was getting about a skillup a stack of bait before. Now I'm getting nada. I'm 95% sure atm that the cap is 5.

edit: Made 5 and steadied so prety much confirming cap.

Port Jeuno

Fished in Port Jeuno with Sabiki rig. Caught only 3 jellyfish, but got some sardines for cooking and yellow globes as well. Wish my skill was higher so I didn't get as much rusty things. If you're an Alchemist, the Yellow Globes can be made into Poison Dust and the Jellyfish into mercury, which you can then synth into Poison Powders. It's literally crafting your own fortune.
Comp/Fly Lure
# Oct 14 2005 at 6:53 AM Rating: Decent
Okay the comp/fly lure thing blows. I'm catching nothing but rusty buckets. What the heck is going on.

jelly only equipment

For all those alchemists out there, if you use a composite rod and a fly lure, you will catch only jellies and the odd rusty item. You can use this combo all kinds of places. Port bastok, port windurst, selbina, and kazham are some of the places that I can confirm getting only jellies and rusty items.

Alright, I would say that SE changed something with a recent patch. I have been unable to get a single jelly with this combo for about 3 weeks now. Ah well, back to the drawing board...
