I have always found that the element days and facing possion effects crafting results.

For some resion my HQ rate improves a lot when using a fire crystal to syth on iceday.

Anway this is an element compus that has been around on a few sites.

Dark = North
Light = North East
Ice = East
Wind = South East
Earth = South
Lightning = Soth West
Water = West
Fire = North West

I've been told facing the dirction of the elements strong point, in this case East will incress sucsses rate and HQ rate.
While Face the direction that the element is week to, which for this case would be North West, would incress syth failing but incress skill ups.

If you want to more sucsses try crafting on Windsday facing East with Ice crystal.

Also if you craft within 5 lvls from your current crafting lvl, you can still get skill ups even if it fails.

Also have a new site thats decated to cooking in ffxi if your intrested.
Its new so information is a bit small right now.
But bookmark it, I'm sure you will find it useful when its full up.

Wow, nice site. Bookmarked. :)
My experience
# Apr 26 2005 at 10:14 AM Rating: Excellent
I tried making butter and apple juice at lvl 10, even with synthesis support I couldn't make any. No skills were gained and nothing were made. Then I tried making other items such as Carrion Broth, Tortilla and Roast Mutton, I suceeded of course and gained skills to lvl 12. That is when I could start making butter and apple juice with synthesis support. It is good to make a few of other items to gain skills rather than wasting materials on making butter at lvl 10, unless you have too much gils to waste!
Keep!

If you're leveling cooking all the way, hold on to this stuff! It's used in Baked Popotos and Pie Crust, both of which you'll be making a lot of as you level up. Saves you the time/money of buying it or crafting it whenever you need it later on :)

Yesyes you will need these later on in several recipies... popular ones include: Baked Popoto, Pie Dough, and Cookies.

Lvl cap
# Feb 15 2005 at 4:37 PM Rating: Decent
I was just at the guild and asked one of the NPCs for advice on synthing and was given this as an option at 22cooking. I double checked and on here it says the cap is 20. Was the cap increased or was the NPC wrong? Anyone know?

No the NPC wasn't wrong - but you need to know what to expect the NPCs to say in order to get recipes from them. (sounds wierd but true)

One of the NPCs will tell you a recipe _below_ your current cap, one will tell you a recipe at or around your cap, and the one that sells advanced synthesis support will tell you a recipe above your cap.

Make sure you ask the advanced support NPC if you're looking for a recipe to level off of. But honestly, the best way is to look on this site for recipes 6-8 levels above your current cap and price out the one that will get you the most gains for the least amount of gil.

Sometimes you get lucky and can make something that will sell quickly - other times you may need to store your products on a mule and slowly sell them over time, or just sell to an NPC as you make them (with certain recipes you can actually come out ahead or close to breakeven doing this).

This is hands down THE worst guild store. LOL
She's not selling the butter right now. and I care not to look into why she is not. I guess she just doesnt like me. Also, quite often, trivial items such as rock salt and bird eggs are sold out here. /sigh. GOOD LUCK!

The reason that none of these things are selling is that the guild (unlike most shops, or so I have found) have a set number of an item they can sell. The Items you are trying to buy are probably in high demand and, you may have to actually "Camp" the store. This will enable you to learn when, and when not to come to buy from the guild. I think that they restock every Real Day, and have aprox. 150-250 of items stocked. most items arent bought, but the ones that are such as those ingredients, ar eoften sold out because they are used in so many recipes. If you make sure to get there early, you can buy before the guild is sold out.

It's kind of a factor of both RL day and Vanadiel day - if you go to a store that was all out of a certain item the day before immediately after the store opens, there should be at least a few of them there. Quantity and price seem to depend on the day also (as well as fame of course).

If a Guild store is all out of an item, the only way it will get that item back in stock on the same day is if somebody sells some of that item back to the store.

I also think that ppl like me that try to cut even with a loss or get rid of some strags, sell it back to the guild.

I do this quite offten with left over ingredents from syth failing.

And selling it back to the guild rather than npc meens that others can still buy that ingredent on the next game day.
Price Drops
# Sep 15 2004 at 9:45 AM Rating: Decent
I don't know about other servers, but on Kujata, at least, the price of this has dropped drastically. If you're making food for profit, Selbina Butter's not too great anymore. I witnessed the average price drop from 1k to about 500 per stack over the span of 2 days.

And, as many people know, it's very tough to drive the price back up.

Still, if you're using it for leveling, keeping the stuff will help you later on when you need to make whatever else. As you can see, butter is used in a LOT of recipies...

...Just don't do like I did and end up filling your Mog House with butters because you made too many. ^^;

I think when you get a special synth from these, you get extra butter. I just made 6 butters instead of 4 on one of mine (^_^). Whoopee!

good lvling and money
# Jan 07 2004 at 2:07 PM Rating: Default
At lvl 13, I was able to make this with only about 10% failure rate with Advanced image support on.

Rock salt sells for 28-30 a piece (360 for a stack), selbina milke sells for about 60 per bottle at the guild (probably cheaper if you bought in selb), and ice crystals goes for about 1000 per stack at AH.

Makes 4 stacks of selbina butter. Which on Cerebrus sells for about 900 per stack x 4 = 3600 gil. You make a cool 1500 profit if you don't fail. I lvled my cooking from 11 to 15.5 yesterday with it, and made money in the process.

I had a horrific time leveling cooking with butter from 11-16 with it. I started on Lightsday and failed about 80% of the time until after 12:00 on Darksday. After that, I still failed about 30% of the time. I had enough ingredients for about 40stacks of butter, assuming no fails, and wound up with barely over 18.

This recipe gives 4 sticks of butter per batch of making, not 1.
