OK I am a XBOX 360 beta tester and I have been playing FFXI for a week (for everyone that like to call people noob). My question is, when fishing does it autocatch the fish based on your fishing skill or should I be doing something. Thx
Unless something change (I hope it doesn.t) you will be notified that you have hooked something. The watch the direction the rod goes and move the rod the opposite direction. When the rod is in the middle do nothing, and when the fish guage is down completly reel it in. Depending on your skill lvl and the size of the fish (as compared to the size of fish your rod was made to catch) you will either: a.) catch the fish b.) your line will break c.) you will get some message about the fish being too small or too large for you rod d.) your rod will break. Also if you reel in too soon your line may break or your rod so be careful. Note. controls for fishing: move rod left or right the same as you move your char, reel in with the conformation button. Hope this helps and if anything is wrong (possibly which direction you have to move the rod, but I think it is the opposite) post a correction or feel free to rate down and flame. I apologize in advance for errors,if there are any, spelling and for the ungodly block'o'text >_<.
Although all the messages appear to predict dire consequences if you don't Esc / PS equivalent, only one is a true prediction of line / rod break: "You have a terrible feeling about this one". Reel your line in when you see this message, ignore the rest. Feel free to experiment with fighting the fish despite this message, of course. I don't recommend it, even if you have a lot of money. By the way, don't feel like you have to get the best gear to fish. I have done well, initially, with the lowest level equipment possible, and Mog Enhancement Fishing (Layout one Brass / Earthen / Ceramic Flowerpot in Mog House, has to be in your Mog inventory to be placed, not your Character inventory) If you have other furniture, you may need to buy more flowerpots, or even remove furniture to get the energy level of the other Enhancements to be less than that of the flowerpots. Tie goes to the first Enhancement that had more energy than the others, e.g., if you have '6 points energy' in Enhancement: Water, from 2 Water Jugs, and then Layout 3 Ceramic Flowerpots of 2 energy each, you will continue to have Enhancement: Water, because the energy levels are tied and Water was first. If, however, you remove one Water Jug, the flowerpots' energy, at 6, will be dominant and you will receive Enhancement: Fishing. If you then replace the 2nd Water Jug, the energy levels will again be tied, and remain Enhancement: Fishing. Why fishing for flowerpots? No reason. It is an expedient game mechanic, and a reward for people who try out gardening.
This bait will catch either moat carp, or crayfish with any rod. As the bait is cheap an if ur in san or wind u can farm rods off goblin fishers, so this is an ideal way to level fishing and get a nice income. About 4k a stack of moat carps, worth the effort
He used to, before the latest update. Don't know if it was a mistake, but he isn't selling them anymore. Anyone who knows where they were moved to let us know.
Vendor inventory changes based on the nation's conquest rank. Currently on Shiva, Bastok is number one so Gelzerio is selling little worms. Unfortunately I don't know if he sells them at rank 2 or not.
It's not always just the rank that matters as well... certain items come fromcertainregions. if the country you're in doesn't have controlofthat area, the regional vendor won't sell the items. Hence theneed for expeditionary forces to take over regions.

I would assume it's the same in San D'oria. It might be different in Windhurst since there is the fishing guild there and all.
Bastok merchant wasn't selling them
